Crash Bandicoot 2 - 100% Walkthrough, Part 24: Cold Hard Crash

- This is the most frustrating level in the entire game. It's by far the longest level (only video in the first two games to exceed six minutes) and there are so many things that can and will go wrong most of the time. I needed more than 50 attempts in total.
The skull platform is what makes this level so long. First of all, the path has boxes. Second, it doesn't have a "return platform" in the end, but a gap that leads to a place much later in the main route. You can't backtrack to the boxes you missed from here. Finally, the gem is located after the point of no return.
So, in order to get everything, you first have to go back and forth for all the boxes and then use the nearest checkpoint to quicksave. Thankfully, there's one right next to the platform. It's impossible to backtrack the part of the main route that leads to where you return from the skull route, so you have to go get the gem first.
Once you have the gem, you can kill yourself and finish the main route. The reason why I kill myself after taking the checkpoint is because the skull platform doesn't work again immediately.

Next time go get an aku aku mask, save, then enter the level and you’ll have an invincible aku at the difficult part and you can basically just slied through it

Haha yes. That box. I did that loads of times. The exact same happened in the hidden section of Unbearable just after the checkpoint. Two hidden life crates. So annoying isn't it?

Yeah I tried like 50 times beating this level (in a trial and error fun) and when I got to the end it said I had 154/155 boxes...I was about to break my controller lmao
You're most likely missing the box near the ceiling on the bonus stage. Pay close attention at 1:12 and you'll see it. At least you hear it.

OMG. For YEARS I was always baffled where the heck the last box was, and now I found the one near the ceiling, geez, Naught Dog, you bastards, anyways, thanks a bunch!
so there were 2 things I have realized.
1. The hidden box from the bonus stage
2. The death zone entrance can also be your exit. I thought once you get on the death zone platform you cant go back unless u make it through the death zone
The death route is even harder in the N. Sane Trilogy. The nitros are way too close together.

The map designers approved that this is the indented way to win the box gem in that level. It's just mindblowing.

The fact that there is so many phases to getting all the boxes in this level is what made me pissed off about that one box that you can't even see when you jump high before bouncing on that other box to reach it...It's times like this when I see flaws in the game.
Thankfully Vicarious Visions remedied that by panning the camera where it can actually be seen.
Ah, Cold Hard Crash. The one level that nobody liked completing 100% in the original trilogy and the level that, for some reason, the developers of Crash 4 decided that the inspiration of nearly every stage be drawn from.
Toys for Bob *REALLY* went all out for that design to point I do not want another Crash sequel with a nightmare completion route like that ever again. They went overboard with those collectathons...
I've been 1 box away about ten times now, thinking it's a glitch with either the TNT or NITRO, but it was another bloody hidden box. Thanks man, I can now move onto the next level.
1:12 Made me slam my fists on the table. I kept finishing the level at 154/155 boxes because of that one keeply obscured box.
You are such a maniac, man. You seem totally unafraid of any hazard in the game. I've never even had over 20 lives in this game before, and here you are with over 70.

I've 100%'d this game multiple times over many, many years and still keep getting 154 on my current playthrough. Hidden box in the bonus and the life box behind the nitros aren't doing anything. So this is absolutely what I'll try on my next attempt. Thanks!
Update: YEAH, THAT WAS IT. That one TNT was too far from the others to explode
I would happily batter whoever designed that death route. It's easy if you're not bothered about getting all the boxes but if you are it's the worst in the game!
If you have 154, you're probably missing that one box near the ceiling in the bonus stage. Many people miss that box, and I don't really blame them.
And that 1-up is right next these 2 Nitro boxes
Those ice levels were my favorite in this game so you are not the only one who like those

Arg! I must agree with almost everyone here. I could never ever 100% this game when I was younger simply because I was missing that 1 box in the bonus stage.
I found it by sheer accident a few days ago when I went back to play this game on the PS3. ^_^
Now I can finally put to rest the only Crash game I never managed to 100% (or more than 100% in some cases xD).

The devs from vacarious visions where pissed off the same way we where as kids but it take the challenge from the game. I finished the original game only with help from the internet years after release and i raged so hard at it. The remaster was a piece of cake
Really? That's really commendable for the remaster developers. I actually had 0 interest in the remaster since I love the originals but this one act of improvement makes me interested in getting it.

this by far the hardest level to get all the gems. It is confusing hard and frustrating, all the things that get the players pissed off. Thank god one person figured our this level and posted it on youtube.

I swear to God, I am getting ALL the boxes Garland gets (yeah, even that at 1:12 if you are wondering) and I am STILL missing one. This is just nonsense.

I nearly beat this game when I was 8. I had every gem (without a walkthrough) on my own... Except this one (and Spaced Out, obviously).
God, it drove me to insanity! I could not tell you the amount of times I went through the level! On my newest run (I'm 14 now) I worked out it was theoretically impossible to do.
It never occurred to my the skull platform could go DOWN again. Utter fail. Going to try this now...
LOL. I replayed this level so many times and kept missing that box in the bonus area, before finally stumbling across it by accident!
Hell, I was trying to get that outlined crate in the Death Route for half an hour and when I actually got it and finished the level, I saw I needed 40+ more boxes.

And yes, the yellow gem on Plant Food must be gotten within the time limit. It may seem tricky at first, but just practice it a few times and I'm sure you can do it :)
Okay can ANYBODY explain why at 3:50 it became a route? I was always missing 30 boxes and never knew why. I am still so confused!

I haven't uploaded part 23 yet, but just jump on the stairs that look like nitro boxes that aren't moving. It's on the right side, about halfway through the level. You'll find the purple gem there almost immediately.

for those finishing with 154/155, blowing up the nitro detonator at the end will not break the extra life box tucked away behind the 2 nitros near the end. you need to get it manually

The skull path isn't difficult if you've got at least one mask, because if you have, you can charge through the last bit of nitro (spinslide and jump as quick as you can to get rid of the 3 crates) boxes and make tracking back to the skull platform easier. Even though I've scored 100% in this game before, I still forgot where the 155th box was, and like many, I missed the one in the bonus stage. Thanks for the video.
I always collect death route gem and box count gem separately. But he abused checkpoint crates twice to get both gems. I am impressed

I started with 50+ lives but now i got 14. I even had to give up on all the chests.

That death route would have been scary if you didn't have 3 Aku Aku masks, luckily you did Garland.
That's what makes the game interesting.
No matter what I do im 6 boxes short, does the green nitro box at the end not detonate the nitros in the death path??? Thats the only thing i can think of
The Nitro Detonator explodes all Nitros, even in Death routes and Bonus Levels

To tell the truth, I stumbled upon that box on the ceiling simply because I was favoring the "If you can reach the top, get the F*** up there!!!" attitude. The first time I had this idea was during the 1st Crash Bandicoot game. The top screen hides some boxes, just as the bottom screen hides the floor for SMW hacks.:p
The biggest troll level of the entire game, you’re bound to miss a crate one way or another.

This level took for-fucking-ever! I finally finished it though in 30 min
I learned the hard way that if you move too fast in the bonus room while the TNTs are counting down, the good ol' TNT glitch from crash 1 makes an appearance. I got fucked over on that hard.

this helped me too... I thought I did it all but nope, would of been one tnt left.
With more experience even you can get the gem of the skull route and the boxes without dying (just slide alot with invincibility mask)
I think I got lucky with this level. I got the gem at the end of the skull path the last time I played Crash years ago. Picked up the game again last week and already having the crystal saved me a lot of backtracking trying to get the box gem.
If you don't break the box at 4:52, does the nitro not get it when you hit the switch? I got the hidden box in the bonus, but it still says I'm missing one, and I think that may be it because I don't see anything else that I missed.
Yeah, that one box is nasty. In fact, I never would have found it on my own if I didn't find that glitch first :P

I hated this level so much... it took me endless tries to get everything! That skull n crossbones platform makes it so hard! And that hidden box in the bonus level can make you tear your hair out when you see that you have missed just ONE box!
You can still find something on the hard side and still be good at it.
