How to Diagnose a bad EGR Cooler on Cummins ISX

- I made a quick video of how to check if EGR Cooler is bad. This one was by far the worst Ive seen, 1 gallon in about 2 days. Don't let it get this far. This customer drove it for 4 months losing coolant and didn't give it much thought. Fortunately he didn't need a DPF, just a Cooler and Valve and a couple sensors. Thank you so much for the insight on a bad EGR cooler. The map sensor on my truck is soaked with coolant also exhaust pipe to DEF filter wet from coolant. Great video!!!

I have kenworth 2008 and when does regen takes longer than normal white smoke coming out of the pipe.
when this happens do you need to do anything to dry the inside of the pipes? where its wet. and if its bad enough to get into your DPF filter does it only damage your DPF filter? what about your DOC canister?

I've got a '16 Cascadia 415 HP ISX. I blew a heater hose stop engine lite came on. I limped it to a safe spot about 2 miles away. My shop mechanic fixed it we had to put in 9 gal of coolant.
That was Wednesday this week. I've added 2 gal about 6 hrs apart on Friday.
I smell antifreeze still. Could it be the EGR?
they replaced buy EGR cooler 60 month ago I got a Detroit Diesel 60 14.7 can they go bad cuz it's eating my coolant again gallon a day

Big Tex Trucking yes, more than likely. Sometimes the engine starts letting coolant go into wrong places, but ud notice that on performance. Pull that end pipe off and youll be able to tell if the cooler is the problem.
let me know what you find and how much a cooler costs there. I sell a lot of parts, and maybe I can get you it. Or if you wanna swing by CA, Ill replace it for ya. lol

Id say most of the time its gonna be ur oil cooler. Wont really be egr cooler cause theres no oil inside egr cooler.

Hey I know this video is old as shit but hopefully you can help. I've been to 2 mechanics for my isx15 and they both said the same thing. My problem is at idle when my truck passes operating temp of 205 my water temp goes up to compensate for that and when the temp of the water passes 200 the fan kicks on automatically. But when driving on the highway my oil temp will pass 205 to 210-211 but my water temp will stay at 170 and won't go up to kick on the fan so I'll have to manually turn the fan on which base air cools the engine. Both mechanics told me change the thermostat and I did it both times thinking maybe my thermostat was bad but still the same problem wondering if this is oil cooler related or if you've come across this before and can help thanks
Daniel Kenney I had a similar problem and after I changed my oil cooler the oil temp went back to normal working conditions

nino cerruti check ur oil, make sure none is in there. If no, then pull ur coolant cap and start truck, if its bubbling in the tank then itll be a head gasket or maybe head. Last time i did one of those, was a head gasket

2018 Cummins X15 using 3-4 jugs per 5 day shift. Had it to the International dealer & they say that the EGR value & cooler are dry. However due to the poor workmanship there lately I question this. They changed some hoses, clamps & coolant tank. Still uses too much coolant. This is the second new tank. After seeing this video makes me really second guess if the dealer properly test the system. Oh ya after stopping there's whitish smoke coming from the passengers side where the Def filter/regen is. So this adds to my suspicion. Any words of advice?

Is the Intake Manifold Sensor the same thing as the Boost Pressure Sensor?

My isx is deleted and in 2 days it went through 1 gallon of coolant. The egr is just shut off by computer on my truck. Smoking like a chimney out the exhaust and I’m getting coolant into my air system.

Lubricate the pulley
Tighten clamps on charge air hoses

I have code “EGR DELTA PRESSURE” SPN-411 FMI-1
Replaced Delta P Sensor and cleaned all connector pipes and ports. Check engine light still comes on when I pull up a hill.
I get white smoke coming out of stack pipe when accelerating hard or pulling up hill. Once the “EGR DELTA PRESSURE” check engine light comes on then I get no white smoke anymore, but engine performance is decreased.

Dpf will look pink if coolant is making its way there.
Im going through anti freeze like crazy. I have a lot of back pressure. Loosing a lot of anti freeze through my radiator cap. I have a six 450. Would a bad egr cooler cause a lot of back pressure?
Brandon Wright ooo, noo. Not likely, that would most likely be a blown head gasket or bad liner. That is almost the only way pressure gets into the cooling system.

BulletMcNugget thanks. I believe it is my engine head. This issue started a week ago. Would it be ok if I drove the truck with this issue for a little while, like a week or two?
Brandon Wright heads gotta come off regardless, once u get there ull see what it is. It wouldnt be recommended but i had a guy come from florida to CA. Ull just keep losing coolant, dont think anything else should happen

@@BulletMcNugget no not really I can send you a picture have a email ... all my gauges work fine no smoke.... can I run it like that few weeks till I can save money?? Or add blue devil head gasket sealer?
