The whole area of Lake Isabella is an arid high desert, and yes the ground is very dry and very rocky. Remember, the water in the lake comes from a river that moves boulders the size of trucks, beaches appear and disappear from year to year. Any camping area around Lake Isabella is again dry, this is a man made reservoir to hold water for Bakersfield and farmers in the San Joaquin Valley. Recreation seemed to be have been an after-thought. Trees are very sparse in most places around the lake. Critters big and small are a normal thing in The Kern River Valley, and oh, what you saw was a small spider. And the whole area has roaches, get used to it. Kern River Valley is either a place you love, or you hate, doesn't seem to be much in between.

      @juniyananajukyu 6 месяцев назад +3

Yes sir! All spot on! I live in Bakersfield and in the mid 2000s, I was a wine and liquor rep and would service the lake and surrounding areas. But yeah, it's a high desert area and the roaches, they come out when it's hotter so they're a given. It's always awesome to see the valley up there come to life with so much tourists starting in spring for the bird watchers, all the way to Labor Day for the last hoorah!

If only you knew, actually you probably do, just up stream is a great area to camp. We have a blast staying along the Kern in Kernville. Spend the days floating down the river and the nights by the fire under the stars... For the record, it is a 4 hour drive to General Sherman from here...

I’ve camped many places but the sites around Lake Isabella hands down has the highest concentration of cockroaches and spiders especially in the wooded areas. Bugs and critters are expected when camping but it was overwhelming the times I camped at Lake Isabella camp sites. Pretty much one of the reasons I ended up getting a roof top tent.

Lived here most my life. The locals don’t bother with the campsites around the lake at the moment cause they were setup when the lake was 2x its size (almost 30 years ago) So now the campsites are a little ways from the lake itself.
Most locals just camp right next to the lake and are usually fishing.
If you’re looking for a cooler, mountain type campsites, try going up river towards jonsondale. Some really really cool spots up there.

True story, back in the 80's my cousin and I were in his boat on Isabella and the wind took over. We got off the lake and grabbed some lunch. We looked toward the lake and a small aluminum boat was fighting the white caps with the bow nearly vertical to the sky! How it never blew over front to back still amazes us today.

Also, the area north of Lake Isabella has a few nice campgrounds like Lower Peppermint Campground, Holey Meadow Campground, Dome Rock, Quaker Meadow Campground, and Balch Park. @karrpoollane Wind Wolves has free camping near the visitor center. They don't allow trailers or RVs. They ask that you call ahead to let them know you'll be using a camping spot. I highly recommend camping at Dome Rock up near Ponderosa. It's not an official campsite, so there are no restrooms, but it is free to camp there. It's a popular camping spot for those who know about it. Rangers check in every once in a while to make sure nobody's burning campfires when it's not permitted. Sadly, the area suffered from really bad fires a couple of years ago, but it's still very beautiful, and you get a great view of The Needles. If you go to the area on a weekday, you will likely see the Naval pilots from China Lake practicing. It's pretty awesome!

I've loved going to lake Isabella since I was a child in the 90s; always been a home away from home to me. Proposed to my wife there in the "Trail Of A Hundred Giants", a giant Sequoia tree hiking trail on top of the mountain. Between the lake and the sounding area like the mountains, river, canyons, etc.; its my personal idea of heaven. This is especially the case when its not a holiday weekend and you have the whole camp and lake to you're elf practically and when you do see people they are always friendly like minded souls. Holiday weekends kinda suck though as the people that don't really camp go up there and trash the place; always sad to see. A 1 star review for a campsite up there just means more space for those of us who love the area; a bonus for us lol.

or you could idk use the right stake for the dirt your camping in haha. Cant blame the campgrounds for your lack of knowledge, those stakes are also NOTORIOUS for bending. Also the lake had been at its lowest capacity for the last few years, while they were doing work on the Dam. The Lake has very recently returned to full capacity. gotta give it some time to actually come back to life. But i love videos like this, keeps all the tourists out of our lake so the locals can actual enjoy it and not be crowded by people that are just going to complain about it.

It's almost like people don't research the area they're camping in. None of this is surprising for the area, it's an arid desert. Likely lots of KOA campers and inexperienced campers who think they're getting some beautiful lakefront sites for cheap. I've stayed in the area and its likely people who want to save money staying here versus going to Kernville but it can still be enjoyable if you know what you're signing up for.

We were not happy that he told us we had to pay for 2 campsites...since it was more than 6 of us....4 adults and 6 children. Anyways, we paid $138 for 2 nights and 2 campsites...Also you have to leave by 12 the last day or pay. Then a family came and took over our 2nd campsite. We didn't say anything since they were all set up and we were at the lake when they arrived....No biggy until around 10pm when more of there people arrived and set up there tent 3 feet from our tent...I kindly asked them to move further down since I have a baby and might wake up at night...Long story short...they didn't move. It depends on the neighbors you get if you have a good time camping...Some people are rude and don't care...

I went to lake Isabella for a birthday once. I hated it so much. Lots of people having parties, leaving so much garbage. I went into the water and saw a bag of tampons and diapers on the ground. Trash flaring down the river. We went up into the hills to try and get away from the clouds and saw so many wads of used toilet tissue. I would never go back.

Paying over $30 a night for a spot to pitch a tent and a restroom sucks. For that $$, the bathroom should be spotless. Here in AZ our Forest Service charges $30 a night for a tent spot and an outhouse (Mt. Lemmon).

Those aren't cockroaches those are water bugs. But yes this is the reddest county in California. Paradise cove is nice but it's hard when the lake level was struggling to stay up.

I stayed there last year in our van, during the off season and it was great. The host was very nice. Again it was off season, but we liked it. My dog liked it too. I will say though, we are white, so I can’t speak on the racism.

Honestly, the lake Isabella area is one you want to avoid. A lot of people that live up there are hiding from the law. There are great people too but, I don’t think it’s safe. I live in Bakersfield, not that far from there.

I have yet to see a campground bathroom that's clean. As for the bugs? It's the outdoors, so no surprises there. Just make sure there's no spider hiding under the toilet seat. I once saw a spider that made a web under the toilet seat at a campground bathroom. I guess it made sense since bugs can fly into the toilet bowl for water.
Also, I wasn't sure if you were joking about not being White. Your ancestry results you listed showed you're basically White European even if you're half Brazilian. Didn't the Portuguese colonize Brazil?
