Soul Reaver comes in mind, a huge map without loadings, we can go anywere we want, nice graphics, 2 dimensions (human and spectral realm),good level design, and a nice history, one of the greatest game of the system.
I heard that original Crash Bandicoot hacked the console to gain more memory for the performance (dev interview about this can be easily found on RUclips). You can say, that Crash Bandicoot pushed PS to BEYOND max (or it's allowed limits, at the very least)
Love ‘em, and the pre-rendered backgrounds of the Resident Evil games, Myst and Riven (RIVEN!), and Chrono Cross, to name a few. It was a creative solution to the technical limitations of the day. Did you play Chrono Cross? Or did too many people tell you “It’s not a true sequel to Chrono Trigger, they barely referenced the first game” like happened to me? I’m so glad I went back recently to play it!

Then to put the icing on the cake he states people perhaps shouldn’t buy alien resurrection instead wait for the newly announced aliens colonial marines supposedly coming out on ps2 which hadn’t even been released at this point! And the rest is history.

I hated the first Wipeout, literally was the demo that made me not buy the system. In the Toys R Us, it was sometimes hard to see the track and the glitchy jiggling polygons were a disappointment after the rock solid 16-bit sprites. I’m trying to go back and revisit the system though, some fun has been had with my PS Classic. Was Wip3out (I assume the third game) that much better? What was Colony Wars like?
@@evshrug Yeah, I despised the first Wipeout as well, particularly the harsh collision detection. Wip3out had the most refined gameplay of the ps1 titles and ran at a consistently high framerate. I probably preferred both the music and art style of 2097/XL (Wip3out's visuals are quite minimalistic and have a muted pallette) but the assortment of old and new courses is pretty awesome and dual shock support further enhances the experience. Colony Wars was a fairly standard shooter with pretty rudimentary gameplay but the visuals were obscenely good. I can't think of a better looking ps1 game.
They would even occlude bits of the character with the video! Like the balcony on the airship; the characters were rendered BEHIND it somehow, total galaxy brain moment
Jurassic Park blew my mind at the time (2d platformer with 3d graphics)! Animation, flying camera, which was changing its angle depending on a scene! After that I decided to get PlayStation at all costs!
Fear Effect 1 and 2 Soul Reaver and even Shadow Man for me is a miracle (technical acthivement) run in a psone with that draw distance lightining effects and extensive "living" world surrounds.
Just a productive FYI; there were a number of polygonal PS1 games that had no affine texture warping (“jumpy textures”) and those games were typically the more impressive ones.
I think 2001 was the last F1 game on the console. It looks the same and you can play as Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen who still race today. So you can be relevant and retro at the same time
QUAKE 2 obviously takes the Top place when it comes to tech Hokuto no Ken: Seiki Matsukyu Seishi Densetsu this one clearly looks like a good ps2 game.Colors are BEAUTIFUL! Check it out people :)
that 'awesome to the max' Futurama clip maybe isn't necessary between every game you highlight. That kind of repetition can get annoying very quickly. Otherwise, thanks for the video, I love seeing older games push consoles further than people thought was possible at the time. These kinds of videos are pure brain candy and collating these titles for us is a tremendous value.
Wipeout 3: Special Edition . Not only did it have cleaned up versions of the tracks from the previous games, but it ran in 640x480. On a Playstation. Some devs can reeeeally get power out of these things.
At the time, I didn’t like the graphics on the launch PSX games. There were a lot of untextured polygons, jumping polygons, and maybe the CRT in Toys R Us was dark but Wipeout just had so many moving squares that it just looked like noise and I had a hard time seeing what was going on. Controller didn’t fit my hand right either, even as a kid it made my hands sore. I preferred the sprites of the 16-bit gen (Genesis & Super Nintendo), and the N64 looked better than the PSX, but the Dreamcast was the first system that looked to me like it had clean 3D, with great antialiasing and high resolution. Then the PS2 came out, and I saw some fun games at friends’ houses, but once Halo came out I had to explore this mystery! KOTOR! Etc etc. It wasn’t until the PS4 that I got my first PlayStation. And I unabashedly feel like it was the best system of its generation. I loved the game selection, and I can’t really think of any games I’m missing out on with the XBO that I truly regret not playing. It also has the first controller I can “stand,” though the thoughts that the PS5 controller are more “Xbox-like” have me excited. Peripheral support was better too... it was easy to hook up a USB Mic, or a USB DAC/amp for a headset to the PS4, while with XBO you pretty much had to use the (bottom of the barrel) headphone jack on the controller, or an HDMI-equipped AVR. Also, the PS4 had PSVR, are you kidding me! So, while I love my PS4, I don’t feel “PlayStation always wins.” I am glad I recently got a PlayStation Classic to go play FFVII and Metal Gear Solid (for $30!), and I’ll probably look for ways to play later entries in those series, but I don’t regret my older Sega and Xbox consoles at all. This next gen has the PS5 shaping up looking great, because of amazing GAMES (I’m too much of a gamer to care that much about specs, if they don’t service the gameplay), but Microsoft bought a few studios I really respect (kind of a bummer after Sony really helped fund the excellent Hellblade) and it has more potential to be a good gaming system this time around. Might be the first gen I buy two main systems... or maybe I’ll just pay for a month of xCloud here and there, haha!
Those were pretty good. Never got that much into the Spiderman game but feel I should have. I think I got stuck somewhere on Hercules. Got half way through SOTN and finished Jackie Chan.

Regarding the intro, not much 2D games came out on this system. We got the likes of Guilty Gear, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Advanced V.G. 2, Mega Man 1-6 & 8, Silhouette Mirage and The King of Fighters '95 & '99. The small selection of the 2D games released on PlayStation and the other 32-bit machines actually aged better than the 3D games everyone was into then.
Then you look at the OpenLara tech-demo for the Game Boy Advance and you think : WOW ! How is that possible with such a limited hardware ?! P.S. An hardware uncapable to natively run 3D games. P.P.S. Can you do a video dedicated to the five 3D games that push the GBA hardware to the limits ?
Played numbers 1,3 and 4. Alien Resurrection and FF IX(best in the series) are great games. Never developed taste for Ridge Racer but fell in love with Gran Turismo.
João Pedro • well, I doubt he’s playing with a camera pointed at a CRT. He’s probably playing under emulation on a PS3, with something like an HDMI capture card. The original PS2 had a lot of aliasing, which hid jaggies (I didn’t like jaggies back then) but also softened the image. The yellow Composite out is also darker than a digital HDMI output. If you recently got a PS2, see if you can hook it up to your TV with component cables (Red, Green, and Blue), or maybe get an HDMI mod! Personally, if I felt there were must-play games from the PS2, I would see if they were remastered for PS4 (many were), or subscribe to the PS Now service.

Tobal 2 is one PS1 you need to check out. By far the best looking PS1 fighter in its life. The music is as great as the graphics are too.

Believe it or not, Rascal. That game is one of the few platformers on the ps1 that runs at 60 fps while still looking pretty nice.
