“reading isn’t boring, you’re just reading boring books” is such an excellent saying, i always try to make this point to people who say that they don’t like reading because it’s boring
Reading can also not be for everyone. No matter how excited I would get for any of the books I bought, they would all just help me fall asleep faster than I would without reading.
0:46 1. Read a book 1:11 2. Excercise 1:19 3. Learn a new skill 1:42 4. Your purpose 2:05 5. Meditation 2:28 6. Journaling 2:49 7. Entertainment in a Vacuum (passive entertainment instead of scrolling)
As someone with ADHD, I find my biggest problem is not that I have nothing to get rid of the boredom, but that I lack the motivation to actually get started on something. I have many hobbies; drawing, writing, reading, video games, etc. But there will be times where I literally *want* to do one of these fulfilling activities but I just can't bring myself to get up or get out of bed and commit to it. It's like being stuck in a state of paralysis because I have very little executive function. And in these moments, it's easy to resort to doomscrolling because it requires little effort in comparison, and it's full of small dopamine hits that makes it hard to stop even when I'm really not enjoying the activity that much
Same. What helps me is I tell myself I’ll just do 5 minutes of an activity and after that I can stop. It lets me get started because I’ll usually get sucked in and not want to stop once I start but I can trick my brain by using something that takes little effort to get started. Doesn’t always work and sometimes I do stop the activity after 5 minutes, but hey, at least I did those 5 minutes
this was literally me today. ADHD is brutal sometimes. I literally bought the elden ring dlc but wasn’t able to play games for a bit cuz i was busy and now i can’t bring myself to pick it up again for no reason. I literally love the game too.
the last part, 'Entertainment in a Vacuum' is so important and often overlooked - this world is so busy and exhausting and sometimes we just want to do something that doesn't require any effort at all, and that's where doomscrolling loves to come back at you; having something else other than that, less harmful and all in all better, is super helpful.
I hadn’t watched any movies in a while and was on yt instead and when I finally decided to just watch a movie it felt SO good. There’s also usually way more effort and artistry that goes into filmmaking and seeing the work of hundreds of dedicated professionals on and off set is just so fulfilling

I can't thank you enough for the time you devoted into making this video. Past couple of days were one of the worst for me in a long long time, and I just doom scrolled for hours to keep my mind of things. It obviously made it even worse during this time. Then I found your video and honestly it felt as if you were my friend who is there for me. At one moment I had to pause the video because I thought my music started playing as the song you used is one of my favourite. I will now try to do better and I hope I'll move onto better things so I won't even think of picking my phone up to mindlessly look at things, but at the same time I hope I will come across your videos again! Thank you
One thing that helped me last year, is this video by Dr. K where he recommends that for a week, don't do activities that don't have an end time. So no tiktok, no gaming. You can watch a movie a day if you want, but it has to be intentional, with clear beginnings and ends. Lovely experiment that
Dr.K has had a huge impact on my life. Most of the things I've struggled with finally make sense now. Life is actually making sense now. I have much gratitude.

Came to leave this comment and noticed how small your channel is, unbelievable! wish you all the best and lots of success in the future xx
This video found me at the perfect time. I have just gotten home from a great day and got hit with that post-fun boredom. I don't know if any of you have experienced when after a fun day, you come home and it's too early to go to bed so you just sit there. Anyway, I was bored so I got on RUclips, watched a video or two, then found this. After watching this I WANT to be bored. I'm all about health and self-improvement and being bored appears to be very healthy. Thank you for this video brother!
The exercise thing is some real shit. Even just walking for a mile or 2 a day has helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Plus its a good time to listen to podcasts like you bring up later in the video :)
Hey, thanks man. I've been figuring out life now without platforms like instagram and tiktok and this kind of affirming content makes me feel like I'm doing something good for myself.

I’ve been losing confidence recently again and started doom scrolling a lot. This genuinely helped me a lot cuz it helped me go to my old ways of living off of my phone
Tom, this video really helped me. When I'm bored, I often want to do one of these things but always think to myself "I should be doing something more important than reading or journaling or playing my guitar" but hearing you reiterate that these are good ways to pass the time makes me feel like I actually do have control over how I spend my free time and that it could be easier than I'm making it out to be. Btw, I really enjoy your video style. New sub here!
I just stumbled upon this video. I thought that you were a RUclipsr with at least a few hundred thousand subscribers, so it was surprising to see how wrong i was. I'm sure you are going to blow up at some point considering the quality of your content. Also - great video! I needed that, thanks 👍
This is an awesome video man. The amount of time that I - and almost everyone else in my generation - has lost to scrolling, video games, etc is incalculable. Literal years of my life down the drain. Hopefully that all ends now.
Thank you. I'll try these methods out. I remember sitting in boredom and coming up with things when I was a kid. My phone consumed me when I first got a more modern phone that could run more than just messenger and very simple google searches. The entertainment in a vacuum sounds like a good idea. I could even implement it into hobbies I enjoy such as games, with games that have set time periods of play or specific goals that you can only do daily. It will keep me from wanting to continue as it has in the past. I'll try to also incorporate more socialization into these easy activities, I've always found myself more fulfilled when I'm with people, even if the thing I'm doing WITH them is considered unproductive. It's productive in my eyes because human relations mean a lot to me. Thank you for the video, Tom.
I love to think that while not engaging in doomscrolling and just sitting with that feeling of boredom, Tom came up with the idea to make this video anyhow, this video is great! Thank you for the reminder to do better, I needed it

How can i thank you for this. This video showed up and is a huge reality check and i will be trying everything that you mentioned. I agree with most of this, I started journaling this year and it helps your thinking so much, self reflecting on a piece of paper is indeed potent and last year i started reading and during that period that i was reading books i didnt even scroll at all i was reading while eating, drinking and was even cutting time from gaming to read. Really appreciate you trying to do better and helping other getting better as well
I’m surprised nobody else has mentioned that the music choices in this video are immaculate. Out Getting Ribs is a masterpiece. Awesome video, keep it up!
actually got on the computer to look into self improvement/interesting content after just laying in bed staring at the ceiling bc I didn't want to start scrolling again. wild to me that I unintentionally took that first step and found the other steps here. Great vid man.
I really appreciate you finding a digestible middle ground between the 2 polar ends of entertainment nowadays; a turbo-edited 30 second flash machine or a entirely-too-stretched out 20+ minute ranting video. Your cinematography is beautiful and you're great at delivering helpful nudges in the right direction in a supportive manner. Happy to have liked and subscribed, wishing you the best moving forward on youtube! p.s. I will personally donate funds towards a new cutting board my dude. I aspire to have your level of patience when it comes to dealing with things that inconvenient, must be all the meditating you do 😉
I’m a Videographer and would like to say this video is not only extremely useful and motivating, but also shot, edited and narrated eloquently. Bravo, Tom 👏
this might be one of the best videos i've came across youtube. It gets to the point, it has a good narrator and the cinematography it´s really good. excellent work friend!
I can't even describe in words how much I enjoyed this video. The edition the content and the topic, top tier. Congrats and I hope you keep up this good work!
I find it interesting how this video's shot so well it keeps your interest the full length of the video, with a good topic in mind.I am aware it's only a 3 minute video regardless, but I would love to learn how to encapsulate that same satisfaction of really good cinematography and powerful feelings throughout, Definitely inspiring.
great video! mentioning more traditional forms of digital entertainment (movies) was a great idea as I feel that many people forget about it and go straight to short form content. even though you aren't doing anything with films, they do not damage your mind and gives you something to think about (depending on the movie). if you watch 300 shorts you'll probably only be able to remember a few, while a good movie will give you something to talk about with others and you'll be able to remember it!
I really enjoyed this and I completely agree that even if you don't have the energy to be "productive", at least reading or focusing on a podcast is better than scrolling!!
"Doomscrolling" is such a good term. And you're totally right. I remember watching a Veritasium video about being bored and how that's great for us, and you touch on a similar concept here
thank you for the quick video helps a lot, feels like you don't try to get the attention we are trying to put on important things but you really want to help.
Thanks, really engaging video (I know it's three minutes long, but my attention span really is that bad)! I like how you've filmed it; I always struggle when videos like this are just someone sitting still and talking so this was nice. Over the past year, I've been taking up writing to fill the gap. I think having an outlet like journalling, writing or art - just creating in general - is really good. It can be frustrating when it doesn't go right, and I've still got a way to go before I can be as good at it as I want to be, but knowing that at the end of the day you've created something feels far more satisfying and productive than doomscrolling, which tends to just make you feel guilty about 'not doing enough.'
Ive been doing these on my own befofe seeing this video. Its been an improvement on my life to explore my creativity, search deep within myself, or just enjoy life.
I am impressed by your ability to express this so clearly in the form of a very well made RUclipsvideo. You are literally helping humans by having made it. Thank you!
I love the ideas you presented! I've gone on a similar journey but through my relationship with Jesus as my primary motivation. The only suggestion I would add to your list is connection. The activities you suggested promote great connection within yourself, but often times we resolve to doom scrolling because we have a dire need for connection with others and God. So when you're feeling bored, isolated, and empty seek out someone in your support system (friend, significant other, parent, sibling, etc.). If you don't have one, make it a goal to find a support system. Church is a great community to find people who, often times though not always, genuinely care about knowing you.
man ambikeshchoudhary was right you are unbelievably underrated. this video was so calming and urged me to continue writing stuff for my comic. thanks man, hope you get picked up by the algorithm soon because people really need content like this more often
This video was absolute class; it really got me thinking. I’ve been really struggling to move past short form content and I don’t even enjoy watching it, just feel trapped by it. Thanks 🙏 you’ve gained a sub for sure.
Great video! Especially the part about intentional consumption. I expected your channel to be way more popular judging by the quality. Happy to found your content!
i hate to break it to you, but the issue is most of those things seem boring, they dont help breaking executive dysfunction >dont like reading, low imagination, it doesnt work, maybe comics, i havent tried that >excersising, the progress is cool, but not the action, months of work >new skill is an alright option, especially if you do have something specific in mind >work is alright but for sure exhausting >meditation, not for me >journal is work when it doesnt come from a need, i dont have anything to journal about, i dont the movies option is good though, and thats what i do, either movies or long youtube vidoes, i just wish there was something else like it, thats why i clicked, well, movies will have to do, and discourse about them, thats my hobby lately, i feel like it gives some meaning to my life

A 3 minute video more impactful and informative than hours of doomscrolling. Love that mate. Keep making these videos, you got serious potential.

I’m surprised nobody else has mentioned that the music choices in this video are immaculate. Out Getting Ribs is a masterpiece. Awesome video, keep it up!
thank you bro , appreciate it ❤️
actually got on the computer to look into self improvement/interesting content after just laying in bed staring at the ceiling bc I didn't want to start scrolling again. wild to me that I unintentionally took that first step and found the other steps here. Great vid man.
Hahaha serendipity brother
Dang, you’ve convinced me to subscribe in 3 minutes! I’ve been working these exact things into my summer, and I’ve noticed a world of difference.
thank you brother , appreciate that ❤️
the king krule song at the end really tied this piece of art together.
I aspire to have your level of patience when it comes to dealing with things that inconvenient, must be all the meditating you do 😉
thank you man, that means a lot 🙌 glad you got some value from the video and yeah the cutting board needs to go haha
I’m a Videographer and would like to say this video is not only extremely useful and motivating, but also shot, edited and narrated eloquently. Bravo, Tom 👏
thank you man, appreciate that
love how you broke it down.. it was so easy to understand. keep it up man
thank you brother, appreciate it ❤️
this might be one of the best videos i've came across youtube. It gets to the point, it has a good narrator and the cinematography it´s really good.
excellent work friend!
thank you bro, I appreciate that ❤️
Straight to the point, no subway surfers on the bottom to pace the video well.
wtf man why are u so great at film making, song selection, and giving sick advice.
Thank you bro, appreciate that ❤️
I can't even describe in words how much I enjoyed this video. The edition the content and the topic, top tier. Congrats and I hope you keep up this good work!
thank you brother, appreciate it ❤️
Man, this is beautiful, many of us maybe just need to hear this, it's inspiring, and that edition is so clean, thanks a lot man, keep it up!
thank you bro, appreciate that ❤️
I find it interesting how this video's shot so well it keeps your interest the full length of the video, with a good topic in mind.I am aware it's only a 3 minute video regardless, but I would love to learn how to encapsulate that same satisfaction of really good cinematography and powerful feelings throughout, Definitely inspiring.
thank you , i really appreciate that , join the discord or send me an insta dm if you want to chat about it more
Excellent videomaking Tom, i'm in one of the worst periods of my life and this helped me see things in a better way, much love brother
I'm glad you got some value from it ❤️ If you wanna chat about anything send me a dm on Insta or discord
Inspiring and straight to the point. Great video man.
great video! mentioning more traditional forms of digital entertainment (movies) was a great idea as I feel that many people forget about it and go straight to short form content. even though you aren't doing anything with films, they do not damage your mind and gives you something to think about (depending on the movie). if you watch 300 shorts you'll probably only be able to remember a few, while a good movie will give you something to talk about with others and you'll be able to remember it!
exactly brother ❤️
I really enjoyed this and I completely agree that even if you don't have the energy to be "productive", at least reading or focusing on a podcast is better than scrolling!!
exactly 🙌
You gave so much valuable info in a very short amount of time! Thank you!
glad you got some value from it brother ❤️
Thank you, this came up to me in a time of distress and I found some comfort in your video.
I'm glad you got some value from it ❤️
"Doomscrolling" is such a good term. And you're totally right. I remember watching a Veritasium video about being bored and how that's great for us, and you touch on a similar concept here
yeah man, its great to be bored sometimes, really gets the brain going
thank you for the quick video helps a lot, feels like you don't try to get the attention we are trying to put on important things but you really want to help.
Short and to the point videos. Calming and aesthetically pleasing. And yes I’ve subscribed..
Ive been doing these on my own befofe seeing this video. Its been an improvement on my life to explore my creativity, search deep within myself, or just enjoy life.
Great video! Can't believe I'm here before 10k subscribers. You earned a new one today with me.
thank you brother, appreciate it ❤️
Short and crisp. Loved it ❤
thank you brother 🙌
I am impressed by your ability to express this so clearly in the form of a very well made RUclipsvideo. You are literally helping humans by having made it. Thank you!
Thank you :) really appreciate that
I love the ideas you presented! Church is a great community to find people who, often times though not always, genuinely care about knowing you.
great idea !
man ambikeshchoudhary was right you are unbelievably underrated. this video was so calming and urged me to continue writing stuff for my comic. thanks man, hope you get picked up by the algorithm soon because people really need content like this more often
thank you brother, appreciate it ❤️
This video was absolute class; it really got me thinking. I’ve been really struggling to move past short form content and I don’t even enjoy watching it, just feel trapped by it. Thanks 🙏 you’ve gained a sub for sure.
Thank you brother, I appreciate that, you'll get through this
Glad I came across this video. Self improvement should come from a place of love, not hatred of one self
Great video! Especially the part about intentional consumption. I expected your channel to be way more popular judging by the quality. Happy to found your content!
thank you man, appreciate that ❤️
i cannot tell you how much i needed and wanted a video like this
Intentional consumption.. I've been looking what to call that for so years now and your video was just what I needed. Thank you.
This was well needed and well executed, Reeeeally nice job making this one!
thank you brother, appreciate that
I appreciate how to the point this video is, it doesn't have to be difficult to knock bad habits, great work :)
this video got me to exercise more. not a whole lot, but more than i was, thank you man. Keep it up
good shit brother, keep pushing. Man even just a 10 minute walk a day is better than nothing. Most people don't even leave their house.
2:03 brushes the surface of ikigai, an interesting philosophy about work satisfaction in life.
The music is on point, love Anthony's waltz
fantastic song 🙌
King Krule was the cherry on top of this incredible video
i hate to break it to you, but the issue is most of those things seem boring, they dont help breaking executive dysfunction
>dont like reading, low imagination, it doesnt work, maybe comics, i havent tried that
>excersising, the progress is cool, but not the action, months of work
>new skill is an alright option, especially if you do have something specific in mind
>work is alright but for sure exhausting
>meditation, not for me
>journal is work when it doesnt come from a need, i dont have anything to journal about, i dont
the movies option is good though, and thats what i do, either movies or long youtube vidoes, i just wish there was something else like it, thats why i clicked, well, movies will have to do, and discourse about them, thats my hobby lately, i feel like it gives some meaning to my life
