Been doing keto for over 7 years now. Took about 2 weeks to become fat adapted. I use to feel sluggish in the morning and had to drag myself out of bed. Then one day (even to this day) when I wake up in the morning I am ready to pop out of bed. It’s a great feeling.

I first watched this video three months ago, at the beginning of yet another round of doing keto. How long would it last this time? I've been on and off keto so many times I felt like an expert in something I always failed to succeed with. But the words "don't stop before the magic happens" really stuck in my mind. I realized the problem was I was always giving up too soon. So I dug my heels in and now I've lost almost 40 pounds and the scale continues to go down every week as I get closer and closer to my goal. I have all the signs of fat adaptation. I'm 47 years old and having an easier time losing weight then I did when I was 24!

Being fat adapted feels so good and does give me freedom with food. The problem is that once I do indulge in anything made with chocolate I’m off and running again. Sugar and white flour are both terribly addictive! In any case, your videos give me the motivation to make the changes that will bring about better health (again). Low carb and fasting are the answer to a lifetime struggle with food addiction. Thank you Dr. Becky!

I have been keto since May 23 now, lost about 25kg and am now at 97kg at 1.80m, 13kg to go. I feel awesome!
I did buy a Lindt 85% chocolate the other day. Before I would destroy it in seconds, now I had 4 pieces as a treat after dinner (doing IF with OMAD) and it tasted sooooo good, not bitter at all, and I really enjoyed it. But I don’t crave it anymore. As a treat great, but that’s it.
Low carb/keto/carnivore and IF is so fundamentally liberating!

I’m a hybrid! I run (literally…I RUN 🏃‍♀️) on both glucose & fat. Was strict keto for 1.5 years doing IF 20:4 OMAD following Dr Jason Fungs method. Was not overweight but was supporting hubs who was diagnosed with diabetes. He lost 60 pounds and reversed his diabetes! :) BUT…. I developed female hormonal issues. I went through a tough time in 2020 and had surgery for fibroids I never had before going Keto. Was having heavy periods for almost a full year Granted I was in my late 40s and lots was happening! Now at 53 I’ve added oatmeal & some fruit before my running & weights & eat low carb the rest of the day. I’ve reduced my fasting as well. Just my own experience but I do believe the low carb/keto is a terrific way to live. You & your hubs vids helped us tremendously!!!! Two Fit Docs! ❤️

You're correct Dr Becky. It does take time to become fat-adapted. I'm nearly 69 yrs old and have been on low carb/high fat/med protein foods since end of January 2022. I've lost weight and inches and measure my progress by trying on smaller sized favorite clothes packed away in storage boxes. I did this because I want to stay out of the conventional medicine industry and pre-diabetes/diabetes 1&2 runs in both sides of my family. Your wonderful videos have been incredibly helpful for me to stay the course. Keep up the good work!

Diabetes does NOT run in families. It is what we put in our mouths. If people eat out of the chemically made foods from the store freezer, that's one of the places that sugar and carbs run rampant.
Good luck on your lifestyle journey!

I also like to make my own electrolyte drink with water, acv, pink Himalayan salt, a little cinnamon, a little fresh squeezed lemon juice and a little coconut water to sweeten it all. Put in a glass bottle and shake well and sip throughout the day. Very helpful! Lots of variations in "recipe" Even add sprinkle cayenne or fresh grated ginger. Good for gut health 👍

We’re on it, Dr. B. Been doing keto and IF for about six months now and feel great! We mainly do OMAD every day and then do a prolonged water fast of at least 3-5 days every month. I did a 10-day water fast in January and a 7-day in April. Sometimes we open the window a little to two hours or even four hours just for some variety and flexibility. Now I could not even imagine having a six or eight hour eating window, as that is way too much for me. The energy and mental clarity while living this lifestyle is amazing, and I don’t see ever going back to the old way when considering the health benefits and ease of this. Challenge accepted! For life! Thanks Dr. B!

Thanks for the solid encouragement. I used to watch you and your husband back in 2019 when I first discovered keto and IF. I’ve gained some weight and lost my motivation during C-time.
Now, I’m back trying again. I’ve already clocked in more than a month of low carb and IF from 13-48 hours. I’ve felt some relief but a few holiday interruptions may have steered me off course.
I’m curious how many carbs I can tolerate bc I’m surely not as strict as I was in 2019. I’m trying more vegetarian foods, which although avoiding wheat flour and rice tend to add carbs in beans and occasionally potatoes.
I’m hoping the fasting will tamper the effects of the carbs.
Here’s to all those who work to stay well in the body we’ve been given!

I started at 5 to 6 grams of carbs per day then settled on anything less than 20g. You want some serious weight loss? Drop thos carbs to 5 like i did. I never went hungry and ate tons of food but lost 50 pounds in 5 months. 207lbs to 157 lbs. Its crazy considering how much steak eggs and butter i ate but without high insulin you will not store fat. There was definite fine tuning of electrolytes during the keto flu phase but mostly it is adding salt or taking a magnesium/potassium supplement while you transition. I feel FANTASTIC nowadays

@@KM-vf4oi i did once i hit goal weight. I am less strict now that i am healthy, my body can handle a little carbs. I just know that they will cause a blood sugar dive and i may have cravings later. I ignore the cravings or answer them with a 0 carb high fat snack if they are too strong. Mostly i only eat at noon and five so carbs at any meal will be taken care of during my fast.

I'm going on 2 years since I went on Keto. Naturally, I started intermittent fasting on the 2nd day and stick with an 18:6 schedule. Sometimes, it's 20:4 or one meal a day. My wife sees my physical changes but she can't get over the lack of food I eat. I used to chow down 6 or 7 small meals a day. I tell her I just eat when I'm hungry and sometimes it might be just one meal in a day. I am fat adapted but it's not something like I know it. I don't feel any different, it's just that I want more non-carb foods than carb foods. Like when I started on keto, I was concerned about walking away from bread. I'm German-Italian, so it's part of my DNA to eat bread with every meal. Today, no cravings from bread. I can even smell a slice of bread or walk by a bakery and not even catch my attention. Oh yeah, Chinese. It used to be the moment I smelled Chinese food, I was hungry. It didn't matter if I just ate. Now, it smells good, but I'm not hungry. The weird thing is, I used to crave a late night snack, so I ate popcorn or ice cream right before bed. If I do that today, it's a knife spread of butter. Butter. Or a spoonful of peanut butter.

I’m building muscle, but not seeing the fat going away. I eat bacon for breakfast, eggs with cheese for lunch and brats for dinner. I drink a lot of water and take a daily multi-vitamin. Intermittent fasting is very helpful as in 16 hours fasting window and 8 hours eating window with two meals a day. No snacking.
Also a longer fast of 36 or perhaps 48 hours works wonders, and autophagy really kicks off.
Also, the 72 hours sardine challenge! Eat whenever, but only high quality sardines in a tin can, and sufficient amount of water.

    Hi Dr Becky
As I have posted before I am a great believer in your methode for weight loss. The thing that I find is that my weight varies from summer to winter. It is a lot easier to lose weight over summer, not so easy over winter. My metobolic body function demands more food so I tend not to adhere to more strict guide lines over the winter period. This year down here in NZ I find during the winter months when my metabolisim demands more fuel my weight goes up about 2 kg (about 5 lbs) but since following your system I am not worried as I am confident that I can control that minor gain as I come into spring weather. Most animals that we are part of the species do the same. We store energy during the colder seasons to get us though this period. I am sure that the extra weight that I have put on during this period will not stay once the spring/summer season begins. Thanks for your encouragement with your system.
    Cheers
    Warwick Smith

    You are so balanced.
I follow others on FB and their lifestyles are so complicated that people chastise themselves for an off day.
I feel like it’s robbing them of the joy of food and life. We aren’t slaves and we don’t have to be poking our fingers to prove it. The “early wo/man” that we are trying to emulate certainly didn’t poke her/his fingers!
Thanks for being a wise voice of reason as you teach and challenge us. 🌻Laura

Thank you, Dr. Gillaspy for this excellent explanation of how to make our bodies fat adapted or metabolically flexible. I started learning this about two years ago with intermittent fasting: You have added to my knowledge and I will try the electrolytes as I do have a hard time feeling full when I eat.

Excellent video. I am a competitive Ironman Triathlete who races at least 1x a month and unknown to me have a fatty liver with relatively high elevated AST and ALT liver enzymes 4 months ago. . How ? I lived on sports drinks and glucose packets for training and racing. I also lived on sports drinks all day long as my general drink of choice and perhaps a soda or sweet energy drink or two every day. Also ate a lot of "enriched breads" and pizza. I thought nothing of it, my waist didn't get any larger over the years so I figured I was ok. Little did I know, that fat was building up inside my abdomen as visceral fat. I started Keto and 14:10 fasting 4 months ago and religiously followed around 25 carbs for almost 2 months. The first 7 weeks were absolutely terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially still doing biking and run training daily while fasted. Headaches, aches, urinating constantly, muscle cramps all the time and a really high resting pulse rate. Finally I figured out to increase my sodium to around 4,000 mg (9.5g of Himalyan salt) (Florida is hot) , take a potassium supplement and eat an avocado (I really dislike them) every day. Around 7 weeks, my resting pulse and my exercise pulse got back to more normal. At 8 weeks I started moving into eating around 75g to 100g of carbs depending on training schedule. At 3 months I can bike training ride 3+ hours or run 1+ hours (in Zone 3 heart rate zone) while I have been fasted for at least 13 hours. I almost gave up after 7 weeks - As Dr. GIllaspy said, electrolyte replenishment is key. I have used LMNT for a couple of months now. It has been my goto I carry on my bike. KIndof expensive so I buy the ingredients in bulk containers and make my own version with the same electrolyte content. BTW, I cut my Liver Enzyme levels to 1/3 of that in March. My message to readers, dangerous fatty liver can happen to anyone. It is a silent killer. Still perplexes me. Both my Dr. and I were shocked and surprised at the high liver readings in March.

Hi Dr. Gillaspy, thx 4 leading me here. Congrats on the medal! 🎊 Another question: does the fiber content of certain sources negate the process of fat adaptation, for instance I prefer to use lots of foods w/fat over oils such as flax and chia seeds, which contains fat, but also lots of fiber. I SO appreciate you and Thx again!

This was great. I'm in for the 30 day challenge. I was keto a year ago, and felt wonderful. Then life just happened...but I've been desperate to get back to it again, at least low carb. Hoping that may be my happy-medium. I just wish there was local support like when I did weight watchers. This way you can find suggestions when you plateau or go to BBQs, etc. Thank you again!

Started the carnivore diet and I did go through a transitional period. My diet before was mostly carbs. I am now starting to see the benefits of low carbs. I feel better. What actually works for me is to go 3 days high protein low carb and then on day 4, I get to splurge and it's all the carbs I want then I either partially or entirely fast on day 5 then back to the routine. Don't plan to ever go back to a high-carb diet.

Hello, doing a mix between keto and low carb. Carbs only after jogging ore cycling to fill up and regenerate better. Intermitted fasting (only one meal at the weekend) is normal for me. You save a lot of time and money if you do not eat so often 🙂. It is very comfortable , too - not looking for food every 4 hours. But I do not forget to enjoy live (pizza, beer and so on) after having this (once a week) i train more. Also drinking abel cidre vinager with water works for me. Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Germany

I've been carnivore since January 1st. I was in nutritional ketosis daily (,5 or above ketones). I lost 50 lbs of body fat according to my scale. However, I started chemo and the dexmethazone was spiking my glucose and I can't get back into ketosis. I told the doctor I had no nausea or vomiting and so I stopped the pills after #4. My glucose is still under 100 and I think I am seeing some new weight-loss. I think glucose is the cause of chemo side effects!
