    Loved this, it was exactly what I needed, I think I am an alto but maybe I am wrong! I almost reached the last two upper register exercises, but I didnt, and you confirmed I should stick to mostly alto for now (and I love low blues so Im good with that). Great video, great presence. Great instruction without a lot of filler in between.

    Thank you so much. I studied voice for a moment but I never had the right teacher. Some said I was Alto some said I was Soprano. I never was taught how to know how to use my voice. Thank you

    Loved that. I've been told about head voice and chest voice at choir, but not belting. Very useful indeed

    This was really fantastic to help bring awareness to the difference between where head/chest break and to consciously choose where to belt in that range. Thank you so much!

    Excellent tutorial! My range is nearly identical to yours. Please recommend some of your favorite pop tunes that compliment your voice so that i might better understand my own. Even better, what do you like to sing that is especially challenging? I could use the song as a goal to learn to master.

    Thank you for an excellent, comprehensive lesson! I've been singing for 45 years, in vocal groups and on my own. My solo focus is in the narrative style of traditional folk (Lou Killen was a mentor), so despite my years of choir singing I do not have a classically trained sound. I also have a very casual relationship with music theory, so please excuse my ignorance.
    Thank you in particular for discussing the daily changes in vocal range. Mine varies dramatically, even between hours of the day. When I collaborate with other artists and they ask what key I sing certain songs in, I just shrug because it fluctuates from D to A. (That descriptor may only pertain to folk guitarists who think the key is defined by where they place their capo, lol). We'll decide it's in one key, and half an hour later I've shifted up or down a step. Apparently, I am most often in the key of E, which is not popular with my fellow folkies.
    The traditional narrative style relies on emotional interpretation for the purpose of storytelling, which adds to the fluctuation. It's difficult to describe; my connection to a piece and how well it comes across to an audience depends upon where I place it in my vocal range. It just feels right in some keys, and there's an emotional disconnect in others.
    Hormones, hydration, respiratory health, medications, the frequency and intensity with which you rehearse, all affect your vocal range. When I was on biologics my singing voice was thin and fragile, as if my vocal chords were lost in the desert. They recovered a few months after I stopped the treatments, and I don't think I have ever had a stronger feeling of relief. It felt like my soul had been returned to me.
    Despite the fluctuations in where my strongest voice is, I am firmly in the contralto range. In choirs I sing alto, in my a capella group I sing tenor because we often don't have any and I'm the only one who can reach the notes. I lack the power to project in the mid-tenor range, though.
    In middle school (age 11-13) I sang first soprano. We didn't have enough of them -- do we sense a theme? -- and my choir director felt my voice had a sweetness to balance some of the shriller voices. It was frustrating, because it was not my strongest voice and I could barely reach some of the notes. I told Mr. H he had placed me in the wrong section, and he agreed that I was not best suited for Soprano 1, said that he knew it was difficult, and asked me to suppress my perfectionism because he really needed me in that part. 1st soprano in middle school is basically mezzo-soprano, so it wasn't a ridiculous request.
    Mr. H was my choir director for high school (age 13-17) as well; imagine my surprise that first year to be ranked among his strongest altos! It was still frustrating; even the usual alto line was half in my head voice. We had a small tenor section and their parts were in my belt voice. But for that ensemble my timbre did not fit the sound our director wanted.
    Because my range doesn't match a lot of currently popular music, I do a lot of harmonizing with what's on the radio. Cher, George Ezra and Tracy Chapman are my closest vocal matches, although my voice has a lighter quality. I always sound softer and more feminine than I think I do.

    It would be really great if you could give the note name for some of these. What's the lowest note for the alto 2 and alto 1? What is the note that you break on? What note is your top belt? Etc. I am an alto. I sing alto 2 in my choir because that's the section I'm needed in. But I'm an alto 1. My break seems to be at C#5 or D5. I can belt regularly on C5 and if I'm really warmed up D5. I'm curious as to how that's matching up with what you are playing. My singing range is E3-F#5 though I can phonate from C3-Eb6. Thank you!

      Alisa LaVine what I’m trying to say is, my lowest notes, my break notes and highest, change constantly due to having a human body. I’m encouraging singers to feel their voices out and make note of the differences in feeling, for example, warmed up vs not warmed up etc
      So on a good day, warmed up, my lowest is B below C3, my break point normally starts at G4 to about B4, my highest is E6, these are my ‘normal’ notes but if I were tired, ill, allergic, many other aspects that affect us, these notes are variable.

    • @JadeLikeTheStone
      @JadeLikeTheStone 4 года назад +1

      Alisa LaVine I’d say your belt range is strong A1 range and what your saying is your break is high suggesting that you have a Sop higher range!! Have you ever tried some Sop lines?

      @@JadeLikeTheStone I'm so sorry! I missed your initial reply! Yes, I have tried soprano but my tesiturra is much too low. My second passaggio sits at D5(sometimes C#5 if it's early in the day or I'm tired). But I am also relatively new to singing. I've only been learning to sing for about 4 years. In fact I didn't even know how to use my head voice until 3 years ago. My mentor feels that I am an A1 though I could sing the soprano 2 part on occasion. I'm still discovering and developing my voice though I'm in my early 50s so I'm not pushing myself. I definitely had an over developed chest voice. I had a range of C#3-B4 because that's all I could do in my chest. I've really been working on my mixed voice which has helped me connect all my registers and move through them more freely. Smoothing out my secondo passaggio has been a slow process but there's been significant improvement in the past year. Thank you, for taking the time to reach out to me. I was just curious on the pitches in this video so that I could get a feel for where I'm at.

    • @alisalavine1052
      @alisalavine1052 4 года назад

      @@JadeLikeTheStone I've heard that the secondo passaggio for a typical soprano was around F5. I know there are no steadfast rules to this. Just "typically". I will say that since I've learned how to use my mixed voice I've heard from several trained and knowledgeable vocalists that I do have a "soprano feel" to my voice. I just assumed that was because I have a naturally clear tone. I'm still trying to understand what exactly that means!

    • @JadeLikeTheStone
      @JadeLikeTheStone 4 года назад +1

      Alisa LaVine well I’m modern musuc the break point could be interpreted differently, as you are using areas of you en voice you would t in classical, like the belt range. Lots of Sops have a strong chest area and I can really ‘feel’ this area of their voice. Lots of people ‘feel’ their head voice as light and uncontrolled. But that’s just how it feels and will feel different due to your body reverberating sound from those different areas of your body/head. Your in your prime as a woman for your voice, it’s a great time to really focus on strengthening any areas of your voice you feel are weakest. I would have a go at a Sop classical piece such as ‘Amarilli Mia Bella’ - Paganini, to really ‘connect’ to that upper break point into head voice. And why not regard yourself as both Alto and Sop? I think putting our selves into these ‘voice categories’ can be restrictive, when you could have a range much bigger than you might think? 😃

    I can reach B2 as my lowest note, at the moment my highest note is F#5. I can reach G5 only in exercises. Where does that lead me? I still dont know if I am an alto or mezzo. Any ideas?

    • @ellis3455
      @ellis3455 3 года назад

      Do you mean B3? because B2 is close to my lowest note and I'm a male baritone or bass-baritone.

    • @birgithade5022
      @birgithade5022 3 года назад

      Nope B2. It is kind of weak, but you can hear it.My voice teacher still isn't sure if I'm an alto or mezzo- because it is not only about low and high notes, but it also depends on the break area and voice color, timbre...
      Adele's range starts on B2. Lady Gaga has a range, starting at F#2. That's what you can find on the internet🙂 She and Adele are able to reach higher notes than I can. D6 for example 😳🤩
      With lots of practice (about 100 years 😅😉) who knows, I could reach C6.
      I don't think so.

    • @ellis3455

      @@birgithade5022 C6 is definitely possible, male tenors and some baritones can reach into the 6th octave so don't doubt yourself, keep practicing. I'm still impressed at a B2, I didn't know females could reach that low

      @@birgithade5022 i know this is older but it seems like a mezzo to me. I'm a high tenor with easy access to F2-D5 (although i've hit B1-E6 before). Lady Gaga's non-pitch-shifted range is A2-B5 recorded and she is a lower mezzo. Contralto's are a little higher than me.
