Robin Zander was the vocalist here and for most of Cheap Trick's career. They were hard to categorize because they were just in between power pop and hard rock. But, yeah, probably a little punk influence too. The bands you mention they sound a bit like here came after them. They toured pretty much year round in the late 70s/early 80s and were incredible live. They made it big when they performed at Budokan in Japan. Japanese audiences went mad for them, so an album Live at Budokan was released of the two day concert there, and imported here. Then they blew up. The drummer is Bun E. Carlos and yes, very cool smoking a cigarette while going off on his drums lol. An Excellent drummer as you noted. Everyone loves Bun E. >.< Rick Nielsen (who threw his guitar into the crowd) is an amazing guitarist and always hilarious like here. Tom the bass player also very good, and Robin had really solid vocal abilities. An accountant, a clown, a rock star, and a model lol. They all always looked and dressed as here. I didn't give you this one to blow you away, but because they were a mainly 70s/80s band who were pretty big whom you haven't heard yet, all very good musicians, and the song is an anthemic one from the time period. I wanted to give you the Budokan version, but for some reason, it's slowed down quite a bit and the Midnight Special version was pretty good. They were just one of those bands who always sounded phenomenal live. They don't have a lot of music videos, so unfortunately are stuck with an audio or a live. I wish they would update their stuff with better mixed/produced versions for youtube. Most of their songs had this high energy to them, although they did a couple slower songs here and there. They had a long kind of slump period, then had a resurgence and had a song called The Flame that hit it big and you would probably connect with. This was to introduce you to them - this high energy live performance was what they were known for. Thanks for reviewing!
An incredibly tight live band. Their cover of “In the Street” by Big Star was used for That 70s Show’s theme song. You should really check out Big Star, great stuff
Rick Nielsen is one of my favorite guitarists and Tom Peterson playing the 12-string bass always gives me chills. Wish they'd shown that 12-string. Bunch of E Carlos is what I call a "stealth rocker". He doesn't look like a rock star at all.
Love Robin's voice. check out his duets w/ Anne Wilson (of Heart) in Almost Paradise and others. Fav Cheap Trick song is The Flame. Both songs above are ballads.
Please consider "Mandocello," which really showcases Robin Zander's vocals. "Dream Police" might not blow you away, but it has interesting lyrics and an awesome arrangement. Thanks!
I love this song. It reminds me of high school, and blasting Cheap Trick in the car, going out on the weekend with my friends. I was surprised to see you reacting to this, but it was great! Thanks 😊 They have so many great songs, but you might like The Flame, their only song to hit #1 in the US. Also, I Want You To Want Me is another great song among their many top hits.
I requested this one because it's a band from the 70s and 80s with a really unique sound who were also great live apparently! Thanks for sharing and making your request above. :)
I shared your reaction with two high school friends of mine who live in Iowa where I'm originally from (per my comment below). I'm guessing they haven't heard this song in few years, lol! My request is "I Started A Joke" by the Bee Gees (1968). There is live performance video from Las Vegas in 1979 with 72M views (but I think the audio is distorted). There is also a lyric only video with 20M views. I would love to win a free reaction to this, or the one I posted on the Donna Summer reaction your recently did. Thanks! -Joni
The thing with Surrender is, it's a song of it's time - boomers and gen-Xers, their parents were...adults. They won WW2, but they didn't listen to rock and roll or do anything undignified if they could help it - they acted their age. You really couldn't remotely imagine them being teenagers, whereas now youth culture has held sway for 3 or 4 generations - this sort of behavior nowadays is a big nothingburger. It was a bit of a shocking concept in the early seventies, though. They wrote and performed the theme from That 70s Show, named We're All Alright, which may be where you recognize the chorus - not that you couldn't have heard it out in the wild - it is one of their biggest hits.
"Randy Hogan"? Who in the world is "Randy Hogan"? Where does that even come from? You may know by now, if you read the comments, that is name is Robin Zander... a great, great vocalist.
The band is not lead by Randy Hogan, he left before the first album. Robin Zander is the singer.

Love this song from the movie Over The Edge which even though it takes place in the 1970’s reminds me of my youth in the 1990’s
Yes! I own the DVD of Over the Edge. LOVE the scene where this song is played.
Brilliant musicians!Did you get the reference to KISS in the lyrics. Love this band. We all listened to CT back in the day.

The best true rock song written. 3 verses a chorus and bridge.

Got a Guitar Hero II memories of this one 👌

Check out, If You Want My Love or Voices.
It is ROBIN ZANDER...one of best singers in rock history! Bun E. Carlos on the drums..kicks ass!

The Flame
Actually their singer is Robin Zander
If you haven’t please watch the movie Over The Edge starring a young Matt Dillon

Looked at the wrong name, Randy was their lead vocalist before Robin.
NOT Randy Zander FFS
That's not the singers name
