Rick Nielson is again one of the most underrated guitarists and songwriters of all time. And a funny guy, too. It is a pity, that i didn't see them live.
They would open their shows with a song called "Hello There," which was the same song as "Goodnight" but with different lyrics: "Hello there ladies and gentleman... are you ready to rock?" etc. Pretty cool.
My favorite line for this track….. “Then I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch” Rollin numbers,Rock and Rollin’, Got my KISS records out” …… that just got to show you that your parents are no different than you ! Smoking weed (number) and listening to KISS 🎸❤️🔥
I saw them in Michigan in 1977, shortly after their debut album came out. Also on the bill that night were Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and The Rumaways, Joan Jett's first band. Cheap Trick started the show with a song called Hello There, the same song as Good Night Now, but with the lyrics changed to the title. Good Night Now closed their performance. Peace.
I had the pleasure meeting them about 15 years ago and they were so appreciative of their fans, Robin Zander is so kind Great to know fame didn't change them
The Budahkon album stayed in heavy rotation on my turntable back then. I saw them twice live. Years later I met Rick Nielsen at a MacWorld in San Francisco. He could not have been nicer and down to earth. Deep cut from their 1st album: "Elo Kiddies."
For a real treat go to their channel and search I'm Losing You. They were brought in to back Lennon when he was recording Double fantasy and the one song leaked was that one. It is a much better version of the one that made the cut, has that old bite John used on his vocals. Rumour has it there are more waiting to be heard. Apparently John was a fan and talked about possibly doing other work with Cheap Trick.
Cheap Trick wasn't getting much attention until this live album came out. The studio version of Surrender was the one released as the single, but the live version got all the radio play.
My first concert Kiss w/ Cheap Trick. All those years ago. Cheap Trick - Need Your Love Cheap Trick - Gonna Raise Hell Cheap Trick - Baby Loves To Rock Cheap Trick - Stop This Game Cheap Trick - If You Want My Love ( You Got it) Cheap Trick - Heaven Tonight
Those are some great tracks! I also like Ain't that a Shame, Clock Strikes Ten, Big Eyes, Southern Girls, Auf Weidersehn. Need Your Love is probably my favorite, though.
Gonna Raise hell is a must I saw them three times in the '70's and 80's and they would wear you out. Bun is amazing and quite a character. RIP you gave us great memories.✌
There are some great live vids out there. They start the show like they finish it! There is a track for they did for the movie Roadie, it's called "Everything Works If You Let It" you gotta hear it!🔥
Bun E. Carlos is a stage name. His name is actually Brad Carlson. "Good Night Now" is a reprise of "Hello There" which is played at the beginning of every show. Nielson and Bassist Tom Petersson started together and brought in Bun E. And Robin. Nielson adopted the goofy look so that there would be two good looking guys and two dorky guys in the band. Nielson writes most of the songs.
Saw them live a couple of times, great shows. If memory serves, one of their performance contract riders involves Bun E. Carlos having an oxygen tank/tent backstage since he smokes through nearly his entire performance. I don't know how he did that.
That’s it. It’s going to be all Cheap Trick all day for me! Also, Tom Peterson invented the 12 string bass on top of being the handsomest man in rock. 😊😊😊
they had finished and were ready to release their studio album "dream police" when the live at budokan album was leaked into the u.s. and became a monster. so "dream police" was shelved and didn't come out until the following year. check them out on the midnight special to see more of bun e. carlos than you saw here. he's such a mad man on drums, but looks like an insurance salesman. their shows are always high energy.
Cheap Trick is fun to watch live. Rick Nielsen's antics were not on display as much here on the guitar, but he's usually doing something entertaining. Bun. E. Carlos is always intense on the drums lol! Yes, the Japanese went nuts for Cheap Trick from the moment they arrived there, for whatever reason. You can hear the shrieks and screams on all of the Budokan tracks. 😆
I saw ACDC open for them when I was in high school on the Highway to Hell tour right before Bon Scott died. One of the best shows I've ever seen and yeah it was all about ACDC for me but I've always loved Rick Nielsen and I covered one of their songs, Dream Police, in a high school band I was in. But then went Back in Black came out once ACDC revamped, this time around, not a year and a half later, now Cheap Trick was opening for ACDC.
@@L33Reacts There are a lot better songs by them, but their live ones from this concert are just fun as hell, and I had to show you that drum thing lol!
Check out their album "Dream Police" which is one of those rare albums where EVERY song is incredible! Not a bad one in the bunch. My first concert ever!! Great band and they are still touring!
Rick Nielson is famous for owning an obscene number of guitars including a custom made 5 neck guitar that he would haul out and play in concert. Robin Zander's voice is fantastic...hugely underrated
I've seen Ch÷ap Trick three times and they were fantastic. The first time I saw them they opened for Foreigner and blew them off of the stage. Cheap Trick was like manymid-western bands (REO, Styx, Bob Seeger, Ted Nugent, etc)...they could sell out 12,000 to 15,000 seat arenas on their own
Early in their career Cheap Trick was well known throughout Illinois. They played in a small town (6,000+) Fall Festival near me and kids talked about it for months.
Robert Fripp appears to be a very down-to-earth guy. You should check out the COVID lockdown videos he did weekly with his much more flamboyant wife, Toyah Wilcox. She'd dress up in all kinds of costumes and sing, while he just happily played his guitar as an accompaniment. Too funny! Btw. Toyah Wilcox is an English singer, actress, and TV presenter, with acareer spanning more than 40 years. Willcox fronted the eponymous indie band "Toyah" from 1977 to 1983, before embarking on a solo career in the mid-1980s. You should add the UK hits "It's A Mystery", "I Want To Be Free", and "Thunder In the Mountains" to your list. 😊
This was always presented as Live at Budakon when it came out. And when we played it on air. Robin and my BFF were friends. He sang on my friends songs, singing backup. He’s a dawg lol
The best way to produce a good live band in the studio, is to tell them to give this song a live Arrangement like they have to play it live and then get out of the way
They have always been very amusing live and play the hell out of the songs. Actually, I had a chance to speak with Robin Zander, and he was a cool and down to earth guy.
I saw them play in a bar in Lake Geneva Wisconsin after hanging out at The Playboy Resort for the day (I was a Playboy Club Member) in 1973. This was before they became famous and I thought they sucked. So much for my eye for talent 😆
Rick Nielsen collects guitars, last I heard he had 400-500. He takes quite a few of them on tour. During their 25th anniversary concert in Rockford Ill (their home town) he used a different guitar for every song.
Lee, Cheap Trick is amazing! Check out more from the live album! They actually open with "Hello There", which is the same as Goodnight now but with different "hello"-lyrics, haha! They did Power Pop in the 1970's and 80's as heirs to The Beatles -- except with louder guitars/amps -- and their songs are fantastic! Checkout the live version of a song called "Lookout"...it's KILLER! It's got Pop, Punk, Goth, and hooks akimbo!
Two needs and two rockers. Yet the nerds were absolutely rockers. Bun E Carlos (no longer in the band) always looked like that, down to the cigarette. The other three are still playing.
Saw them a few years ago. Rick was constantly throwing picks into the crowd. He must go thru a ton of picks. I think they have his image on them. Not just plain picks. I wasn't close enough to get one. Great show tho.
Two geeks and two cute guys and one of the best voices in rock.
Rick Nielson is again one of the most underrated guitarists and songwriters of all time. And a funny guy, too. It is a pity, that i didn't see them live.
Lmao at your reaction to the drumming at the end, I can't stop laughing. Lol lol lol
hahaha that was pretty good. i can only work with what i'm given and that was a lot to work with lol
Finally people are appreciating the greatness of Cheap Trick
They would open their shows with a song called "Hello There," which was the same song as "Goodnight" but with different lyrics: "Hello there ladies and gentleman... are you ready to rock?" etc. Pretty cool.
If you want to see the drummer more try "Ain't That a Shame" same live show at Budahkon
My favorite line for this track…..
“Then I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch”
Rollin numbers,Rock and Rollin’, Got my KISS records out”
…… that just got to show you that your parents are no different than you ! Smoking weed (number) and listening to KISS 🎸❤️🔥
They open with Hello There..... the same song as Goodnight Now! Genius!!!
The Great Bun E Carlos!
“Ain’t That a Shame” is the killer track from this concert album.
Check out their live version of Sgt Pepper. One of the few band who could do it live really well.
Holy Smokes! I listened to Live At Budokan a thousand times in high school when it came out...Check out California Man from this same show.
Peace.
That's a KICK-ASS lineup!!
I had the good fortune to meet theses guys before they “made it” they were very nice and down to earth.

i see why! this is frickin awesome lol
Thanks Laura, that was lots of fun. A great live album by Cheap Trick.
My first concert Kiss w/ Cheap Trick. All those years ago.
Cheap Trick - Need Your Love
Cheap Trick - Gonna Raise Hell
Cheap Trick - Baby Loves To Rock
Cheap Trick - Stop This Game
Cheap Trick - If You Want My Love ( You Got it)

@@geob3963 So many good ones. They were so good live!
Pride of Rockford Illinois
Great band !
Power PoP
Had a friend who went to HS with them. Underrated band.
Saw them with UFO at the Boston garden 1978 or so
I was in the audience too!
Check out "Southern Girls" from same concert but didn't make album (wha?), great song!
Right? Should have been on it!
Gonna Raise hell is a must I saw them three times in the '70's and 80's and they would wear you out. Bun is amazing and quite a character. RIP you gave us great memories.✌
My favorites from this At Budokan album were Surrender, Big Eyes, Need Your Love, and the cover of Fats Domino's Ain't That a Shame.
i wish i could watch the whole thing! i bet it was electric from start to finish!
Bun E Carlos is so good ! Amazing drummer 🔥
yeah i had no idea until now. that dude is nasty back there!
This song and the album shot Cheap Trick from obscurity to prominence! Super popular was Surrender!
For a drummer you should do Ain't That a Shame from that album😎✌
i'll check it out! thank you!
Cheap Trick was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

If you enjoyed this, Lee, you should dig up their set for Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. Half hour set, pure energy, better sound!
Yes I'm a Cheap Trick fan 'n iffin' ya wanna hear 'em at their best check out Taxman, Mr. Thief from their first album. Gwine blow you away sho''nuff!
