In the song, the parents are rolling joints and rocking out to Kiss records. That's a tribute to Kiss, who had Cheap Trick opening for them early on, giving them the exposure to sign a recording contract. It was Cheap Trick's popularity in Japan that propelled them to chart success in the US, based on the Live at Budokan album. When "Surrender" was originally released in 1978, it didn't even crack the Top 40. After "Budokan," they were golden. Thanks Jamie and Harri.
The WAC’s were the Women’s Auxiliary Corps of the US army allowing women to serve in uniform during WWII. The song claims that they recruited “old maids” which was an old-fashioned way of saying “slightly manly women who never married.” It was a way of saying something without saying anything about gender identity or orientation. But in the song, mommy wasn’t one of those. Daddy is basically saying, your mother was in the war and she saw some stuff - she knows what she’s talking about.
Finally Harri has come back to the rockers from Rockford, Illinois. Now will he finally discover their cover of Ain't That a Shame? OK not a cover, more like a reimagining.
I've seen Cheap Trick in concert many times and every time they got to the line "Got my Kiss records out" they would throw a Kiss album into the crowd.
They had a few hits of their own, and made some great covers of early Rock'n'Roll songs. Their two-voice harmonies, Bun E. Carlos' drums, and Rick Nielsen's guitar work made them stand out.
……when they sing the line about Kiss records live in concert they actually threw Kiss records into the crowd ! I know this because I almost caught one but it flew off my finger tips and landed in the row behind me 😕 one of my biggest regret in my life that I didn’t catch it. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🙁
The Live At Budokan version is EPIC. So is I Want You To Want Me. That live album put them on the map. the song introduction "we got a new song that just came out this week, and the song is called Surrender"
From the 1978 album "Heaven Tonight" this was Cheap Tricks first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100's at 62. With energetic drumming, excellent rhythm guitar work and melodic singing this was a great tune. The lyrics are so humorous and share a conversation we've all shared with our parents, our kids, etc. So entertaining. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jami. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Since you have reacted to a couple of Slade songs recently, you may be interested in the fact that Cheap Trick took their name after a Slade concert in the US 1973 where the band saw the concert and Tom Petersson said that Slade used every cheap trick in the book. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons also was at a Slade concert the same year ( maybe the same? ) and was so inspired by the loud noise and Slade´s outfits that they decided that they wanted to do the same but more. Kiss first live album was named "Kiss alive" after Slade´s ""Slade alive". Both bands have Slade as inspiration and Slade never got big in the USA.
I always loved this song Hilarious!! Love the Humor! I’ve always loved Cheap Trick I got laughed at by the dudes I worked with! Who’s right now??? Thanx Harry for appreciating the humor too!
In the 70’s, saw Cheap Trick open for KISS with Peter Frampton at the Fabulous Forum. It was fantastic!! Lead guitarist Rick Nielsen is known to have over 2K guitars in his collection! 🎸🎸 Please do “I WANT YOU TO WANT ME” and “THE FLAME”. 🔥🔥
Went on a whim to see them at a nightclub in Cocoa Beach, FL years ago....was supposed to be studying that night 🙄. Spent part of the night semi concious 🍻 laying on wood shavings....Cheap Trick rocked it though 👍.
CHEAP TRICK'S LIVE ALBUM "LIVE FROM BUDAKON" WITH "AIN'T THAT A SHAME", " I WANT YOU TO WANT ME" RICK NELSON ON GUITAR WOULD SWITCH GUITARS 3-4 TIMES IN A CONCERT. THEY ARE WORTH A FORTUNE NOW!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍😍😍😍😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
One of the few songs where I like the live version (from Buddakan of course) a bit better than the studio. This is still great though. Bun E. Carlos on the drums is really something.
My brother (early mistake post) went to see CT in 1981, his first Rock concert (born in 1967) -I finally saw CT in 2013, on a Summer tour with Blondie (a great duo, for the ticket!) My brother saw CT again, in 2928, tour with ZZ Top (another great pair!) I was so glad to help in the fan vote, of the Rock Hall, to get Cheap Trick in -they waited years, they deserved the honor, and they are Cool! 😎🎸 Be “alright”!
You should check out the Lennon demo for “I’m Losing You” from Double Fantasy featuring Cheap Trick backing Lennon’s vocals on this demo. You can find it on line. Yoko had it pulled and basically fired Cheap Trick from any further involvement on Double Fantasy because Yoko thought the band was trying to benefit from association with John.
@debjorgo well I grew up in 60s and 70s. Heroin was very well known and was called junk. Indonesia had a lot of heroine. FAlling off means overdosing or passing out or coming down.. The strongest argument would be that "Indonesian junk" is unmistakably (IMO) a reference to heroin ('junk' = heroin, especially back in the 70s) and Indonesia (IIRC) was the source of a fair amount of illicit drugs (mostly pot and heroin) back in the day, and much of it was accessible to the thousands of US soldiers stationed in southeast Asia. His mom was, after all, stationed in the Philippines (btw, WAC = Women's Army Corp), and the southern islands of the Philippines are close to the eastern-most extend of Indonesia. The fact that the previous stanza clearly refers to STDs lends some creedance to this stanza also being about STDs. But I still don't buy it. The terminology is just way too drug-focused for me.
@@Dee-JayW Well, that's what I always thought. I was hitting my twenties in the mid '70s. I think there was some Tai stick from Indonesia going around at the time. But lately, web sites, er... There are so many wackos everywhere that think everything is about drugs, I ceded. I'm going back though. It's Heroin, in this song anyway. But McCartney's Junk is about trash, not heroin or his 'business'. I'm sticking to that.
I saw them warming up for Kiss in 78ish. Kiss got slaughtered pop tunes to nothing in the overtime. It wasn't even close. Kinda had to be there story # 8m & 38 times.
their first tour was 1977 Kiss Love Gun Tour, and the first appearance of the Hamer 12-string bass. I have pictures from Montreal 1977 (5th row in front of Ace) on Facebook, featuring both bands
One of the reasons this band has such a huge sound even though there's only 3 musicians playing is that the bass player is doing something that pretty much nobody else ever does..... Hes using a 12 string bass.... What you're hearing are 3 bass octaves for each string for every note.
it's not 3 octaves per string. It's Bass string + 2 of the same guitar string. One of the meanest Bass tones out there. Plays through one bass amp and one guitar amp

Surrender is about #20 on their list of best songs. At least in my opinion.
@@craigplatel813I definitely put the live version higher on the list, but not this version.
Cheap Trick was under the radar, even with the Kiss support spots, but not until Budokan album broke. On top of the world.
Yep, saw Cheap Trick open for KISS in the 70’s with Frampton!
Jami - I commend you on another wonderful submission selection. Thanks Jami and Harri.
the drummer in this band is phenomenal, he is killing it every song, every time
Their cover of "DON'T BE CRUEL" is great!!!

The original lyric was "old maids, dykes and whores"
Been liking them since the Late 70S !
They're from my hometown!!!!
Iconic song. One of those songs that 100% of the audience sings along with at every show.
One of the best power pop bands ever. Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 2016!
Love this band! Very under appreciated!
Finally Harri has come back to the rockers from Rockford, Illinois. Now will he finally discover their cover of Ain't That a Shame? OK not a cover, more like a reimagining.
more like a cover of the John Lennon cover
@@JohnnyMegabyteCanada Lennon's version is piano heavy and bluesy, Cheap Trick is DRUMS! and guitar heavy pure rock.
All covers should be a reimagining. If you don't add your own touch to it there's no point to doing it again.
I've seen Cheap Trick in concert many times and every time they got to the line "Got my Kiss records out" they would throw a Kiss album into the crowd.
Me too. Front row seats and my ears buzzed for days.
Love them.
Thanks Harri!
A great group and song ! Love your reaction ❤ ✌🏻
WE'RE ALL ALRIGHT!
The songs been around for ages and was new when I was young but it is still so much fun to hear it again )
The live at Budokan album was the source that this SHOULD have been pull from.
I saw them their first year at a bar in Lake Geneva Wisconsin 1973.
They had a few hits of their own, and made some great covers of early Rock'n'Roll songs. Their two-voice harmonies, Bun E. Carlos' drums, and Rick Nielsen's guitar work made them stand out.

Gonna Raise Hell live is amazing. Bunn E Carlos on drums and an 8-string bass. These guys were awesome to see live in the 70's.
Great live band 10 grade when this came out got the album immediately
Helluva band. Still touring.
I have a classic Cheap Trick logo t-shirt. On the back it say ON YOUR SINCE 1974, listing every city they've played.

I loved it when they played in the park across from the Point brewery!!!
I'm so lucky to be GenX. Born in 1970, I was surrounded by good music, past and present were included. ✌️
Tonight it’s You is a great Cheap Trick Tune

some great songs from this gem !
Live At Budokan! A band of the ilk of Harry Nilsson, great music, but hilarious at many points.
Love Cheap Trick- Standing on the Edge album
Live version is hot!

Never missed a beat while that cigarette dangled from his lips.
Used to love putting on Would You Like To Go To Heaven Tonight and have a slight disconnect from reality. Had a few friends that worked for too.
Hilarious legendary tune that set the band off towards fandom especially performed on their album Cheap Trick at Budokan!

A great song you should really react to is Mississippi Queen by Mountain...CLASSIC! Best beginning 4 notes EVER!

Talking about guitar work, Bass Player Tom is still the ONLY bass player I know of that plays a 12 string bass. He is amazing.
The Best part of being Alive back then is u could sit in your car for hours and NOT HURT THE Batter CAR Batteries WERE Huge.
