    wow this is quite the elaborate process to replace the clutch. I heard manual transmissions were easier to fix than automatic, but this is still very daunting to a someone new to working on cars.

    This video helped me a lot with my 2006 SPECTRA5, the procedure for which is more or less identical.
    Only things I did different was I left the subframe alone and pulled the gearbox to the side and out of the hole by the strut a little for room. It has to be rotated slightly to fit but once it's out a little and rotated back the inner wing will hold the box there allowing you to work away.
    Also, on case anyone tears it down and isn't sure about reassembly, the large raised part of the clutch disk with the springs on goes TOWARD the throw out bearing. :)

    Power steering rack question ::: With the lowering of the subframe, I didn't understand what you were doing with the power-steering-rack. The power-steering-rack is attached to the subframe. So I guess there are 2 options. Remove bolts from power-steering-rack (to the subframe) OR detach the steering "column" (inside the car) from the "knub" of the power-steering-rack, so the power-steering-rack can be lowered with the subframe. Which of these did you do? (or if there is something I'm missing). Thanks for this video. (For other readers, yes, the first time I watched this video I was a little irked about the "skip", but then I realized the main point of this video is the "trick" of getting the trans wedged between the car-body and the (slightly lowered) subframe. That is what makes this video valuable.

    For future readers. My 2001 Elantra had a "regular" flywheel and was pretty cheap to get a new one (or I could have resurface it). I've discovered my 2004 Santa Fe (and I think some Sonatas) have a
    dual mass flywheel, which cannot be resurfaced. Look into a conversion kit. Here is the one I found : Valeo 52252607 Solid Flywheel Conversion Kit. Search around, the AMAZing ONline retail store did not have the best price on this kit (by like $100 IIRC). In a nutshell, the dual mass flywheel removes some vibration, especially if you're a bad clutch driver. But at the price of much more expensive repairs and non-usable flywheels.

    Great Video regarding the tips involving not dropping the sub-frame out of the car. However, this just like any other videos regarding these Hyundai trans, does not show re-installation of the transaxle. We are stuck trying to put this 2002 Elantra back together...no amount of twisting, tilting, pushing and swearing is permitting the trans to seat back against the motor. no matter what we do, we're ending up with about a 1/2 inch gap. Doing this in a home garage with one guy on the floor and another guy over the top--any mounting tips?

    • @granadacoder4335
      @granadacoder4335 7 лет назад +4

      Yes, a one person home mechanic will have issues here. Here are my tips. 1. When installing the pressure-plate, make SUPER SURE the clutch-disc is centered with the alignment tool. When you tighten the pressure-plate-bolts, it will move a tad on you. 2. There is a round "spring" in the middle of the pressure-plate. This is what holds the throw-out-bearing. Make sure its seated properly, and have the opening of the spring pointed downwards. 3. You know the 17mm bigger bolts at the top of the bellhousing (the 2 big ones that hold the bellhousing/transmission to the engine). Go to hardware store and buy (at least) one of these bolts the same thread-size, but a tad longer than the original bolt. I think I got 110mm length IIRC, but better longer than shorter. Cut the head off the bolt with a hacksaw. Put this on the "upper right" (the one nearer the rear of the car) hole before you try to put the transmission on. Doing the upper-right hole will help the transmission mounting process by getting it to rotate slightly counter-clockwise (which is useful the way the weight of the transmission is distributed). Use this as a third guide-pin. Do NOT put full weight on this bolt, you'll still need the transmission to be supported somehow. Also, buy 2 extra bolts (the 14mm size IIRC) that are longer than the originals, the 2 bolts that go into the already dedicated guide-pins. do NOT cut the heads off of these. Because they are longer, it'll allow you to thread them with the bellhousing farther from the engine. Now, this is a FINESSE job versus a BRUTE FORCE job. So with these 3 guide bolts, you can get the drive-shaft very close to the hole of the clutch. Get things very quiet, and put a wrench on the engine crank bolt near the PASSENGER side of the engine (near where all the a/c belts are). Then you can slightly turn the engine as the transmission driveshaft is coming in contact with the clutch-disc. Then you try to push the transmission into the clutch-disc-hole. You can use the 2 extra long 14mm bolts (that are in the exiting-guide-pin holes) to carefully pull the transmission tighter, but you gotta be very careful, you do not want to bind anything. Always be looking for consistent spacing between the bellhousing and the engine. I'm talking about turning those 2 bolts 1/2 of a turn or maybe 1 full turn at a time. Go back and rotate the engine slightly with the wrench that is on the crack on the passenger side, listening to the driveshaft hit the hole of the clutch-disc. I was "stuck" like you were, and that's when I went to the extra 3 bolts, and I was finally able to pull the transmission to the engine. You feel like you climbed Mt Everest after you finally get it.
      Final tip. Make sure you try to engage the throw out bearing before you start putting everything back together. I mean, you can have 3-4 bolts snug down (not tightened) holding the trans to the engine. But you want to test that throw out bearing much earlier than later. I actually dislodged my circle-spring, and I had to unmount the transmission a SECOND TIME (after it took 3 hours to get it aligned the first time) and reseat the spring. That's how I learned the hard way about it. But the second time I mounted the transmisssion, it only took 15 minutes, because of the 3 bolt system I figured out.

      @@granadacoder4335 killer idea! Here I am on night 3 of trying to get this thing aligned, but to no avail! I'll try that third guide pin idea. Secondly, the bolts for the motor mount bushings are the same size as the 14mm bell-housing bushings, so I've used those to line up the other guide pins. Thank you so much for typing all this out! I'll try again tomorrow!

    Do you know if this process will work on a 2004 Kia Spectra? They're basically the same car. The engines and transmissions are identical. I can't afford to have a garage do it. The instructions call for removing the subframe, but can you wedge the bellhousing between the subframe and body like you do on this car?

    Hello, this car has a new type of support bar. Can you help me evaluate it?

  • @ToxicDemon1999
    @ToxicDemon1999 9 лет назад +1

    Is this something that could be done without a lift, just jack stands or ramps?

    • @granadacoder4335
      @granadacoder4335 7 лет назад +4

      You can do this without a lift. However, you either need a pre-made "Engine Support Bar" or you can build your own (probably need a welder to do this, so most likely you're gonna have to buy one). You need the engine to "hang". This is important because you need to remove 3 of the 4 engine-mounts for this video's "trick" to work. (The video shows the removing the 3 engine mounts, front, rear, and one near the drivers side wheel-well. I would purchase a 1100 pound Engine Support Bar that has TWO bolts. The first bolt will support the engine (there is a hook near the distributor). The second one will be useful for raising the transmission in the absence of a transmission jack. You can use "ratchet" type tie-downs, maybe not the 1" wide ones, but more hefty, like 2" wide ones. I'm talking about the ratchet type tie downs you could use to secure some item to the top of your car. So you don't need a lift, but you need an engine support bar. And you gotta think about how you're gonna raise/lower the transmission while you align it. It would be very hard to do by human-strength alone. the AMAZing ONline realtor has the Engine Support Bar for $65 to $90. I got the "Dragway Tools 1100 lb Engine Support Bar for Transverse Transmission & Transaxle Repair" for $85. But the 2 adjusting bolts came in very handy for this job. The hardest thing to do for the shade-tree-mechanic is the realignment of the transmission. You gotta be able to move the transmission millimeters at a time, and "hold it there", aka, human-strength-alone would be very difficult. (When I was younger, I could human-strength-alone RWD car transmissions, but not a FWD, the angles are just too awkward). You need a robust engine support bar, remember, this bar will be holding a heavy engine while you work under it, so you don't want to skimp on the support. You really need to think safety when doing this job. No scissors jacks for support. Use quality jack stands and get a quality engine support bar.

    I follwed this video but having an issue of the release bearing staying locked into place. I hear it click

    • @granadacoder4335
      @granadacoder4335 7 лет назад +1

      After you get the bellhousing snugged up against the engine (do with 3-4 bolts, not all of them for this part), you want to make sure the throw out bearing locks into place (as you have said). This is accomplished by rotating the shaft (the thing the slave cylinder connects to on the transmission) counter clockwise (looking at it from the top-down). It should lock into place fairly easy, which you know because the shaft will barely rotate at this point. If it does NOT lock into place, you have an issue. Most likely the round-spring in the center of the pressure plate has gotten unseated. You'll have to remove the transmission again :( I know, not fun. Make sure the spring is seated correctly. I like to point the opening of the spring "down". After you reseat it, try again. when aligning the transmission, remember, the drive shaft could dislodge this round-spring, especially if you are off center. This is why aligning the transmission to the engine is a FINESSE job, not a brute strength job. I know when you're tired and trying to get the job done, its frustrating. I knocked mine out of the seat why fumbling the alignment. Fortunately, I check the seating very early, and not after I put everything back together, as I read some people did. After it seats, I like to put back the slave cylinder and give the clutch-pedal a try to make sure if feels normal.
