I just bought a brand new 2022 model from a lady that never even rode it. Got it for half price and after seeing this video I’m super stoked I got the pure 27.5 version. I think really the only thing I’d want is the frame storage the new one has haha. Thanks for the review. I’ve never ridden jumps before, I’m an ok trail rider, just never had the confidence for many things. I’m coming from a 2008 foes racing fxr. So I think this will be a big improvement haha.
As a 5010 v4 owner I’d say the old and new one should both be offered, like the V10 has 27/mullet/29 versions. Old one was basically an oversized slopestyle bike, whereas the v5 is a very playful trailbike…but still a trailbike.
Glad I bought a 5010 C/S build last September while it still had 27.5 wheels. SC should have left it that way. I paid 6000 dollars for mine, it's up to 6700 now. WTF Santa Cruz?
that's not Santa Cruz. that's the bike industry in general. everything thing has gone up due to the 10x price hike in shipping containers. as an example my V2 Evil offering frame cost $3200 when I bought it, it's now $3800 for the same frame. a full GX group set costs more than it did last year and so on.
I was a military pilot and when you went down it reminded me of the awkward conversation I once had with my boss explaining that I was grounded for screwing around and getting hurt.
I have a pink V2 bronson, im just sticking with that. Its 5 years old, but still rips and is so much fun. I have a big 170mm 29er coil bike for the big stuff.
Just brought A Pike Select 150 mm and I am Impressed. I put 2 volume spacers in immediately. I always went with Fox in the past bc they were spec for my bikes, but this new air spring is really progressive. Liked the Rock Shox fork enough to buy a Deluxe ultimate rear shock. Nice review and riding.
Agreed, they should give the consumer the option of 27.5 or 29, I mean some of us like the feel of a either or geometry, and I'm sure there is a reason why the MX setup is being offere, just saying, they should give the consumer the option/choice
Great review. I have a 2020 5010 and the new 5010 mullet looks like a great bike but has a completely different personality. It's no longer the BMX poppy bike. There are a lot of great bikes that plow down the trail. 🙃 I prefer to jump, pop, and skip down the trail. Somethings shouldn't be measured by a stopwatch.
For my riding style I’ll bet the change is an improvement. The only complaints I have with my V3 5010 is the front end getting hung up on technical stuff…and pedal strikes. I’d really like to demo the new MX.
@@vonzen I dropped a 140 air shaft in my Fox 34 which I think was an improvement overall….though not as much as getting a Hightower (lol). I still ride my 5010 a lot though!

I'm trying to decide between a 5010 and a Tallboy. any advice? i'm an older rider but still like to jump (3-4' max). I am looking for a quiver killer, a one bike to do it all. to take to our nearby lift assisted downhill for fun rides, but also where i live is mostly flat cross country. My favorite trails are harder blue runs (not black or double black) with lots of rolling jumps and corners. but i also need a capable and fun uphill and flat trails riding bike. I just want to have 1 bike, not 2 or 3.
Ouch! Nice vid thoug. Could you please let us know why you like it over the bronson? Is it more playful by beeing almost as capable? Thanks in advance!
Love your reviews and awesome riding skills! Which would u recommend between the new 5010 and Bronson for someone who hits the bike park (mountain creek primarily) a few weekends a year but otherwise does techy East Coast trail riding with a lot of climbing? Right now I have a Stumpy Evo but considering trying a SC. I feel like I'm leaning more for the Bronson but I've also seen people shredding faster than me on 130mm bikes at Mountain Creek.
@@radidoc4832 Yeah its a 2021. Honestly was thinking of getting a new bike, mostly just because I like trying out different bikes, but still loving the Evo. For east coast tech riding and bike parks its a great bike. I would definitely jump on the sale, its an insane deal and the Bronson is so pricey for what you get. You can get an Evo right now with X01 for less than what a Bronson costs with NX... lol
I guess it would depend if you see it as a great mid-travel trail bike that is very capable or loved the past jibby, fun, LIGHTER, the in-the-the-bike feel not on-the-bike, jump every little feature kind of bike. It is a GREAT mid-travel trail bike that is very capable & still more fun than the others, but I do miss the older versions before they went to this new suspension for the fun, flickable bike that was LIGHTER & agile with the 27.5 wheels.

hi, actually i have a Meta SX commencal 2022, but i feel heavy, do you recomend me this bike? , i ride for long trails, some downs, drops, ramps, gaps, i don have problems with de sx, but i want be more playful, and my SX at ramps is slow, the 5010 supports a 160mm fork? or not?
Awesome review JC, I still can’t decide if I want to add this bike to my lineup or pick up a new Tallboy? Will this 5010 be a keeper down the road or a regret? Not a cheap mistake if I bought one instead of the TB!!
@@jctrailsI meant to ask you about the weight. I know it’s heavier than the standard new carbon Stumpy, but did it feel good to you? I know you’ve ridden them all. Thanks JC
@@jctrails Rob had a good question and a question I was hoping you’d cover in the video but would you mind quickly comparing how it felt against the regular stumpy now that you’ve ridden both?
@@mrmotomoto it’s taken a few rides to get the new 5010 dialed so now I can tell you this bike feels more planted, has a low CG, and corners better (with same Specialized Purgatory tires installed from Stumpy) so it’s not the tires. Stumpjumper triangle flexed more causing tire rub, and I’m only 150 lb rider. The Stumpy performed its best as a mullet but in my opinion… the 5010 V5 could be your ONLY bike. Lastly, if you have a 5010 version 3, keep it 👍🏼
The L is a touch big for me, but I can make it work with a 40mm stem and 780mm wide bars. I prefer the longer if I’m riding steep trails. I would go with a M if I was strictly riding flow trails and dirt jumps.
I love Santa Cruz I have 27.5 all old 5010. Chameleon C both 27.5 and 29. Hightower my newest Bike and I love it. The other aspect is that the 5010 does not meet my riding style. I am more on the cross country long distance rides. I personally wouldn’t buy a mixed wheels bike it will be hard to sell it or to upgrades the wheels. I can see mixed wheels for racing or if you are training for racing. I might be wrong.
Yo JC somewhat unrelated: We're flying out to Boston through Jet Blue the first time ever, and they state their big bag overall size limit is 80 dimension inches. Any given standard bike bag is more like 97 dim. inches (EVOC, Chain reaction bags) do you know if this rule is strictly enforced, assuming you've flown your bike through them a bunch?
Great video! Thanks. I am wondering if you could also turn it into a full 29er? Does anyone know? I might get it so its interesting to run it either full 27,5 or 29. I am not a big fan of the mullet concept on bikes.
That confirmed my greatest fear that it would lose its playful nature. I always wanted a 5010 but, they did not make an xxl. Now they hav introduced a size xxl they have softened its playful nature. So no longer of interest to me.
Mullet from the factory is one of the dumbest decisions ever but what else would you expect from a company that throws on sram sx drivetrains on $3k+ bikes?
#1 the 5010 is more capable, #2 it gets around turns better with the smaller back wheel, and #3 on big drops you don’t buzz your booty on the back wheel. The tallboy does carry more speed in a straight line and pedal little better, but that’s it.
Agree with you on keeping a pure 27.5 version. Thanks for the great review!
Thanks for watching!
