Mansfield Park is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by British author Jane Austen that premiered in the UK on ITV channel on March 18, 2007.
Adultery is not a typical Jane Austen theme, but when it disturbs the relatively peaceful household at Mansfield Park, it has quite unexpected results.
The diffident and much put-upon heroine Fanny Price has to struggle to cope with the results, re-examining her own feelings while enduring the cheerful amorality, old-fashioned indifference and priggish disapproval of those around her.
While less enjoyable than the 1999 adaptation of the novel, this TV movie remains faithful to the greater part of the narrative where the former took many, unwarranted liberties with the most pivotal part and chief characters of the story.
It still frustrates me that these adaptations of Mansfield Park turn Fanny into a spunky tomboy when that is extremely wrong for her character. Fanny is reserved, frail, quiet and thoughtful, and an example of the graciousness, manners and good behavior that the people around her lack. Twisting her character just to make her what a marketing man would consider more likable really whitewashes the years and extremes of the abuse she suffered by refusing to show it's actual effects. She isn't a playful and sprightly girl who acts/dresses like she belongs in a different era entirely -because she isn't allowed to be-. Her internal monologue hits so hard for anyone who has suffered in a similar way, and makes her thoughts on what's going on even more heartbreaking. Fanny has spent her life crushed into the dirt, has terribly low self-esteem, is always trapped at the side of either her lazy aunt and her cruel one and treated like a slave, yet still has an iron moral code and desire to do what's right, even when her precious Edward starts becoming a hypocrite for Mary's sake. it's what makes her standing up and refusing to marry Mr. Crawford so impressive because she is by nature extremely passive. This one just gets to go on exciting horserides and run around and giggle a lot like a manic pixie dreamgirl. Making her just an amalgamation of feisty Elizabeth, confident Emma or bubbly Marianne, does a disservice to Jane Austen's ability to make a believable and unique variety of protagonists, and to people who have experienced a similar childhood of emotional abuse who related to and felt represented by Fanny. I get that the actress is pretty and writing for a subtle character is hard, but Fanny deserves to be portrayed in a way that understands her character. What would be next? The monster Lady Susan as a heroic, self-sacrificing character?
Hi. I enjoyed reading your excellent comment.
Thank you!!!!
I agree with you 100%. Can they portray that onscreen in a positive way though? Can the audience watching still like a character like that on screen and not think of her as boring. Nowadays, all the female characters have to be freedom-loving, in-your-face, ball-busting feminists or else they are undeserving of love or a happy ending.
Then I tried to think of movies where they successfully made lovely characters on screen the way Fanny Price is written. I could only come up with Jane Eyre. I thought maybe Melanie from Gone With the Wind. Just curious, which other onscreen roles come close to Fanny Price and stay likable?
Sign of the times, I guess. If it's too hard to do, just don't do it at all.
In fairness, I don't think this Fanny is too bad. I think if the movie added some scenes of her being out of breath after running around with Edmund, showed the scene where she had that headache after Mrs. Norris forced her to cut roses and walk across the park twice in the heat or at least left in the reason Edmund is riding with her at the beginning is FOR her health not because she's healthy and trying to be wild and free this would be perfectly fine. This version is guilty of the sin of omission, whereas the 1999 just adds crap to make Fanny seem like Lizzy Bennet 2.0.
@@lovetolovefairytales I mean, you're absolutely right that the 1999 version is infinitely worse, but for me there's still a lot of issue with this one. Her bad health not being mentioned is just one of them. Like having Fanny running around like a guy with her hair loose while every other character has it up (and obviously dyed blonde) and behaving in a way that no lady in her position ever would. It makes no sense that the most restricted person in the house would be the most incorrect in her behavior and dress and isn't really all that fazed by the abuse she receives.
Part of why I love Fanny is she is an accurate representation of what someone who faces emotional abuse deals with and how much I respect her for fighting back despite how ingrained the fear of disappointing people is in her. She goes against her own timid nature to do what's right. If the character is already fiesty and used to pushing back, it doesn't mean s much when she fights back. That's just how she always is. Fanny needs her everyday terror and timidity to show how strong her morals are when people try to coerce her. Just having her seem sickly now and then wouldn't have been enough to make this version true to her character.
And..... the wait goes on for someone to be brave enough to make an ACCURATE adaptation!!!
the 1971 version with Sylvestra Le Touzel as Fanny was pretty good. Better than anything made more recently anyway.
The awkward moment when people say Billie Pipers face bothers them... I think she is one of the most stunning women I have ever seen. I loved her so much in this!
Montana Jane I can't decide which one I like more, this one or the 2007 one but Billie Piper did Fanny Price Justice in this as well. She was made for the role. This version and the 2007 version are my faves.
Billie Pipers! I haven't watched this version. Can she speak proper British? She's best with Cockney!
I think she is beautiful.. but sometimes there is masculinity in her face.. I don't know what it is though..
I love the mom, lay back, doesn't really go against anyone, suddenly, tells her husband what to do and he says nothing, just awesome!
"You know, I've always loved ... this room." Hahahahaha
Best adaptation of this book I have ever seen. The whole cast is just wonderful. Billy Piper is perfect as Fanny. Just brilliant. Wonderful script. Just brilliant.
You are joking, aren't you?
I think if they could have had this cast with the 1980s script it would have been perfect. But I love it as it is. Billie is my favorite Fanny.
This is by far my favorite Jane Austen's story and well played by wonderful actors! Good job in fact!
I absolutely love that moment when Edmund realizes his feelings. He so casually thinks "I love her" like he has so many times before and then that 'spark' ignites and HEA is in sight
Can I just say: the score of this adaptation is absolutely STUNNING.
Maybe I should start running round school yelling PURPLE... maybe I'll find a boyfriend in that way :)
I love Lady Bertram, under all that fluff she is really smart!
Billie is so underrated as an actress. Really love her as Brona/Lily on Penny Dreadful, especially as her Lily persona
Oh she was the best part of that show! Everything else about it was a bit much (neat, but trying too hard to be both gory and clever at the same time) but Billie as Lily was brilliant. Her and and that guy from City of Ember have such a great presence on screen, I hope they get cast as film leads together in something.
. Edmund finally got the wake up call, thank goodness! Oh, Nd totally love the mom! She is so sweet and I love how she notices right away and approves :D
Yes. :) She knew from the start and was waiting on him to get it.
Jan Ramasute She was perfect for this role, I just wished they had someone like her in the 2007 version too.
What do you mean 2007 version? This is the 2007 version.
I meant the version after this one. My bad, I got the years mixed up.... 2011 I believe.
The only other version I know of is the 1999 version with Johnny Lee
Miller and Frances O'Conner. And as far that version and this version,
this one is way better. The narration from Fanny in the 1999 film got annoying to me. :/
Blake Ritson played the character of Edmund Bertram so well that it has made me forget the nasty little character of Mr Eltham he played in Emma. TFS :) Loved this version too
I love the book Mansfield Park. Fanny is a wonderful heroine, because despite being trampled on, she ALWAYS sticks to her principles. This adaptation, while still not completely faithful to the events of the books, at least gets the characters right.
I liked that she was an abolitionist, at a time when that wasn't a very popular thing.
@@pittland44 we don't actually KNOW what Fanny's views on slavery were; the book just says she asked a question ABOUT slavery. It's ambiguous.
@@lovetolovefairytales that’s true Fanny seems to be a fan of Cowper though who was a well-known abolitionist in Jane Austen’s day which may give some small indications
Wonder what would have happened if she'd chosen the maroon.
My favorite adaptation of the book!
This is a sweet and entertaining adaptation of Mansfield Park. Too bad it is very unlike the novel. The 1999 film got it wrong too. I'm all for every Austen adaptation that can be made. I just wish they'd stick a little closer to the original story.
I agree, but I think this one got a lot closer than the 1999 was to the source.
say... everyone forgot about the lavender :)
Loved this movie so much,I really love the qualities of Fanny -she was loyal to who her heart really wanted and some how she seemed to have the answer for any possible question........she seemed to know the difference between true love and a gold digger too.
In Addition , don't matter how many time she was talked done by miss norris and her uncle-at times she never failed to place a smile on her face and turn a criticism into a compliment...that the kind of charter I love to see in movie!
The end is so romantic.....forgetting they are cousins.
+leapinglemur452 Marrying one's cousin in those far off days was very common. It is still permitted in Britain today.
Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth are cousins
married for 73 yrs before his.passing this year
I know that in this period of time, it was considered okay still to marry a cousin. In Pride and Prejudice, their cousin, Mr. Collins offers marriage to Elizabeth Bennett to save her sisters and mother from being destitute. I love Fanny and Edmund and this adaptation was done well!
Ha, these comments are funny on here. It was strange seeing the guy who played Elton in Emma, then watching this movie and he's nice. I was like wow..but I got use to it. Lol, but I prefer his character in Emma more entertaining! :) very funny! He has such Beautiful eyes, btw. This film really captured them good! :)
Jane Austen is timeless
One of the BEST movies I've seen. I LOVE period Drama :)
Fun fact, David Tennant has played Edmund's brother in the 2003 radio version. He's probably my second favorite Tom Bertram after Christopher Villiers.
its reaaaaally funny :D so literally they showed how a person gains vision after being blind and LOVE STRIKES! :D
and no matter what classics always end happily. Maybe the stories in those time for real had happy endings and now in these times the endings have changed both in literature and life.
I just have to say this because it's been bothering me for quite some time. I am so fed up with people complaining about these film adaptations not doing justice to the books they are based on simply because they are not exactly like the books. Since when has any film that is based on a book been the same as the book? Never! It would be so nice if people could just be content with film adaptations that are well-made and worth watching instead of expecting every little detail to be like it is in the books. Enough already!
+Livingston Hampton I quite agree. I loved this adaptation. Seen so many over the years. This is by far the best. Simply gorgeous.
I guess it's because some people consider the film NOT "well-made" nor "worth watching" when it isn't true to the story.
These versions got me to read the other books, when I'd only heard of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility before (due to the major motion picture films about them. Didn't know at the time about Mansfield Park with Johnny Lee Miller til I happened up on it). I personally love the BBC versions that came out in the early 2000s. Mansfield Park, the new Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion are my favorites.
Just had the biggest sigh at the end :) truly a classic story (all of Austen's for that matter)
Actually, there is a study that says if you grow up with someone until the age of 6 and then past, you won't consider them as a love interest. Fanny moved to Mansfield when she was 10, right when young people form such loving attachments. Edmund was the only nice one to her. It's not surprising she developed feelings for him. And I don't think she ever really looked at him as a brother type figure.
Naturally... Edmund needs to marry Fanny because he saw her washing her hair!.... 😜.... Brilliant adaptation of Mansfield Park...
"She is heaven's last best gift..."
💜💙💕💗❤
Who else only came to watch Hayley Atwell and Billie Piper? -queens-
Oh I love them. Now that they are older, I'd like to see Billie, Hayley, and the lovely Lily James (who really looks enough like Hayley to be her sister) play Lady Bertram, Mrs. Norris, and Frances Price in a new adaptation of this!
I watched Emma first so all I could see watching this was Mr. Elton. Imagine how horrible that is.
Lady Bertram is very clever, mothers know best
You can love his Blake Ritson's character so much in Mansfield Park but despise him in Emma.
i really like mansfield park...the ppl chosen to play edmund and fanny go well together on this version
Brava, thanks again for the upload :)
My favorite version of the book!
enjoyed it very much! thank you.
Fanny sticks to her decision whereas edmund is more like indecisive. So may be he saw her as his superior in thinking. That why he released n start to love her.may be
This is the my most favourite scene of the movie
Edmund's mother is so sweet! I really like her!
The waltz! Scandalous! How dare they upload such lascivious and lewd things to RUclips?
😂. This comment is gold.
Actually it was quite common for cousins to marry each other...remember in Pride & Prejudice? Mr. Darcy was supposed to marry Anne De Bourgh, who was also his cousin...also if you are to read up on family tree of the monarchies in Europe in those days, most of them were related to each other
It was quite common in those days for cousins to marry.
It's a book originally. By a famous author named Jane Austen. It is set in the 1800s. Cousins marrying was common.
This movie is just so perfect.
I know. I love it so much, I bought the Blu-ray.
I find it a bit creepy, too, especially considering that they grew up as practically brother and sister.
Thanks for uploading, LostxinxAusten :)
Well, now, it's not that creepy. There is such a thing as childhood sweethearts and they weren't raised together from babies; he's six years older than her and she was ten when they met, so about the right age for him to have been her first crush.
Love this moovie but unfortunately there is so much differences with the Book, and many importants events were cut :/ its too bad
Okay, all I'm saying is if this is not the next Bernie Su adaptation, I'll be mad.
I still don’t understand why he realises he loves her when she says “purple”. But none the less I love this movie
Oh hell no Edmund! Nah you be blind for the longest time!!
I really enjoyed this movie! Thank you x
She looks lovely without the cheesy makeup that she always had to wear as Rose.
i love love this movies
If I walked into Billie Piper's room like that I would forget what I was going to say too.
At first I found it disturbing (and still a bit now) but they were so happy together it made me happy and I tried to forget that they were cousins.
Edmund really wants...Fanny.
"I only wanted to say... Ummm...what was it that I wanted to say?"
Thank you.
That girl moves fast! He had to book it to catch up with her
I love her aunt! So funny
New dance is waltz from Vienna. don't know when it was introduced to England.
Have you tried this week's Jane Austen Quiz? www.janeausten.co.uk/jane-austen-quiz/
We have a new, free, Jane Austen quiz each week which you can try. Subjects range from Pride and Prejudice to historical events of the Regency, to incomplete quotes, to...well that list goes on.
They are so cute together that I'll look past them being cousins.
Ok so i don’t know anything about this story, i came here because of blake ritson, he is the voice of Aymeric de borel in final fantasy 14, and knowing Billie piper was in it i knew i had to see this. I think i’ll read the book once i get the chance, then watch the movie later!!
03.18 - 03.55 --> best scene ... aww, how he looks at her
well done well done
its beautiful
What's the name of the wedding waltz?
Is there this version of this film in Italian?
If you like the actor who portrayed Edmund here, you should watch the most recent version (I'm pretty sure 2007) of Emma. The same actor plays Mr. Elton and I think he looks much more attractive in that film =]
2009 version of Emma. It came out two years after this one. Great movie though. Have you seen the 2020 one yet? It's even better, though it has a shorter runtime.
Can someone (who read the book) please explain to me why he "wakes up" when she says "purple"? I didn't understand this part.
It’s not in the books… it’s really just him realizing how sweet, simple, and pure Fanny is AND that he is in love with her. In the book there really isn’t a time nor place when he realizes it but they needed to create something for the film.
aawww i love it
lol that would NEVER happen with the bathing. Not with Fanny.
exactly!
3:33 i burst into tears!
This adaptation ruined Emma for me, because Blake Ritson (Edmund) plays the stuck up Mr. Elton and all I can see is Edmund falling for Fanny.
Lol, I know right? Actually all I see when watch 2009 Emma, great as it is, is Edmund glaring at Edmund because the actor playing Mr. Knightley was Edmund from the 1999 mansfield park. It's so surreal 😂.
Hey look it's Klaus!!
I don't know what study. I just had a professor who mentioned it several times while we were reading "Frankenstein." I never caught the name.
That was good
some petals get stuck in her cleavage >< it's so interesting the perspective these adaptions take on cleavage! this one obviously showed a lot but other such as Northanger Abbey show little..
So many missing parts and it just doesn't flow. Sorry I can't agree with this adaption as much as like Billie Piper.
What the heck is the new dance? haha When did this 1on1 dance begin? Does anyone know?
lol I was just thinking that
i
So much more emotionally satisfying ending than the book.
Well, the only difference is the book IMPLIED this happened, him declaring his love for her, whereas the movie shows it.
the world as we know it would probably never existed ;)
omg they did
Where's the Doctor?
why purple ? i can't understand. please answer :)
Eyüp Karakuş she’s just asking which colour fanny likes best for the embroidery :)
Esta tia Bertram es mejor que la de la versión de 1983! No tan fiel al libro, pero mejor!
3.30 sudden epiphany!
Why is there had to be to much running in austins movies?
Ohw I'm just being silly:)
i can't understand 3:23. please answer :)
yeah, I love the 1999's Fanny much much better
Ugh just no. That was NOT Fanny. That was Frances O'Connor doing a bad Jane Austen/Lizzy Bennet impression. Shudders. Terrible miscast. Sophia Myles should have been Fanny in that.
AHH
@!! XD
YAY!
Very sweet, but it still bothers me that Fanny was in love with her cousin....
It was common in that time period. Mr. Darcy almost married a sickly first cousin as well, he just ended up choosing Lizzy instead.
