- Arnold J Rimmer is beloved amongst Rew Dwarf fans, but for me was a character I always thought was annoying. And was entirely onboard with the rest of the crew's low opinion of him. But rewatching the series, I found there's more nuance to him that makes it difficult for me to dislike him.

Tongue Tied - Red Dwarf
At his core, Rimmer just wanted to be loved. He wasn't by his parents, his siblings, his schoolmates, even his lemming. It's no wonder he became socially incompetent, with the inferiority complex all that can give you.
The book Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers describes Rimmer's mindset. "Rimmer believed there were two kinds of people: the first kind were history essay people, who started life with a blank sheet, with no score, and accumulated points with every success they achieved. The other kind were the French dictation people: they started off with a hundred per cent, and every mistake they made was deducted from their original perfect score. Rimmer always felt his parents had forced him firmly into the second group."
He also demonstrated something akin to bravery when fighting with the Future Selves, motivated by pure disgust. "Better dead than smeg!" This indicates that he has some lines that he refuses to cross.
(Spoiler) if rimmer was not raised in the Rimmer household then he probably would have lived a good life, being the son of a gardener, he might have had a successful garden centre or followed his farther’s job all his issues came from what his farther expected of him, if he knew he wasnt his farther, maybe he would have lived a better, less annoying life
Rimmer has done a few very selfless things .. I just can't remember what they were
One of them is giving up his spot on the Holoship. Can't remember any other, but surely, they exist :)
He became Ace Rimmer, admittedly under massive peer pressure. In The Last Human book he also redeems himself several times.
He was willing to fight the crews twisted future selves and saved the day, also series ten where he choose to fight back against the Simulant Death Ship in spite of it being a losing battle and he gets a really heroic moment in the promised land which I loved.
