Probably my favourite Red Dwarf joke..."Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb". Perfect set up, perfect delivery, perfect timing. Did you notice that when Legion stabs his left hand, everybody grabs their left hand except for Craig Charles? Just a weird little gaffe that always seemed to catch my eye.
"The light switch" might be my favourite RD joke ever. "I couldn't buy it then?" "Not really... I need it to turn the lights on and off." The delivery on that line is perfect.
They actually did something cool in future episodes with Rimmer’s colour scheme. Sometimes he could toggle between soft and hard light modes (in one episode they said hard light mode used too much power and in another it was handy to be able to phase through a solid object). When in hard light mode his uniform would be blue and it would turn red in soft light mode.
I liked this episode to the extreme. It is one of my favourites of the entire Red Dwarf series. There is nothing bad to say about this episode. I kind of wish, though, that either Legion could go with them or that they could have stayed at the complex, because the complex was nicely-done, too. Great episode from beginning to end.
Watching this, it makes me wonder if the show's writers were in some way making a funny take on the scenes in Star Trek: TOS where Captain Kirk and his crew would dine with aliens as a diplomatic act towards the new alien culture of the week episode, and you think it would be all smooth and perfect, and then, you see how Lister and his crew try to use diplomacy with a alien over dinner and how that goes. Like you just know that in actuality if anyone was to try it, it would just end in disaster particularly in trying to eat and drink alien food. Its pretty funny if you think about it.
All of S6 is my favourite! It's the first I saw as a little kid and Gunmen is probably my earliest Red Dwarf memory. Also I was drinking some orange juice and did an actual spit-take when you said "that's almost a MLP reference." XD
I loved this episode, too. I think Legion was one of the best of the TV villains because he was done up so well. I liked his outfit. He looked like a giant doll. This was, in my opinion, one of Red Dwarf's best episodes.
I've always thought Series 6 was the best, and for the exact reasons you elaborate throughout your commentary of the series. And I just love that an American appreciates Red Dwarf so much she'll go to these lengths to vlog about it episode-by-episode. Great work! Much enjoyed.
@@Cyborcat I think if Doug Naylor was asked he'd say the same aha, they do a great job at sticking to the no aliens rule, I had similar thoughts about the despair squids were they brought from Earth and grew on the ocean moon or were they found there?!
@@RetroRobotRadio possibly, though life only evolved on Earth cause of the existence of liquid water so it’s like the chicken and the egg debate 😂 I like the idea that everything somehow sprung from the human race tho
Reminds me of Star Trek Voyager episode The Thaw where the character Fear was an amalgam of all the people trapped in stasis and when they leave, he no longer exists.
You know the appendix scene could be explained by the dna episode after all when lister was turned into other animals and back there's a good chance his appendix was restored when he was turned back
I liked this episode quite a bit; a little freaky with the concept, but disturbing and a little sad knowing Legion was just trying to survive, I almost hoped they could have found a solution for Legion that could have allowed it some existence.
Hey, Eunuchs were often high-ranking officials & military figures in the ancient Near East & North Africa! So much so that the term eventually became more of an honorific than a literal description (thus the Ethiopian "eunuch" who serves the Kandake encountered in Acts). THE MORE YOU KNOW! XD
This episode is saying more than meets the eye. The idea of living forever in a fake paradise is indeed sooo tempting. However, I believe this episode highlights abusive relationships in that, just because you're partner may provide for you and give you everything you need, being a slave to them is your own payment.
Not sure why they would actually want to leave this ship. Great good, endless entertainment, and the cyber park. Better than being stuck on Starbug or the Dwarf...but I suppose, necceasry for the plot and story. Still sounds like a great place to be when stranded in outer space...
Is it just me, or did the show change a little? Sirens? Legions? Did the show become a monster-of-the-week type thing? Not to say it wasn't like that before at all, but it feels slightly different than before, and I have to say........ I like it!
Heh, I hadn't thought of them as being monster-of-the-week episodes, but you're right. It's due to there being more exploration while they look for Red Dwarf. And yah, Season 6 is a lot of fun.
It's more the big book of myths- legion and Horsemen are from the bible, great book of myths if there ever was one. (call me legion for I am many, new testament)
"Pick up girls with hypnosis", trick intelligent creatures into going with you until they can't escape. I'm starting to think you might have been a little too kind when you said that male Rimmer wasn't as rapey as the female Rimmer. He's just more subtle about it.
I still love that Rimmer buying the light switch gag.

And now imagine it in Star Trek, in all seriousness. Picard: "Step up to red alert!" and Riker or Data: "Sir, that menas changing the bulb."
"The light switch" might be my favourite RD joke ever. "I couldn't buy it then?" "Not really... I need it to turn the lights on and off." The delivery on that line is perfect.
A Gestalt entity that needs a light switch seems a bit pedantic

That scene also makes me think of “Galaxy Quest.”
This has always been my favourite episode but I can't explain why. It's just a great episode with some nice twists and legion is a great villain

The scene where Kryten tries to knock out Rimmer had me in hysterics when I first saw it. Love this episode.

I just realised Space Weevil's are the first (and possibly only) alien life form they encounter.
They COULD be, or it could also be that regular weevils on the ship evolved into what they call space weevils.

Are you absolutely sure it does mean changing the bulb, is the greatest line in Sci Fi history
A look at Gunmen of the Apocalypse it sounds like a job for THE RIVIERA KID "dun dun dun dun dun"
its 1:10 am "i should get sleep" dena uploads video "sleep is over rated"
My favorite ever episode.
You know the appendix scene could be explained by the dna episode after all when lister was turned into other animals and back there's a good chance his appendix was restored when he was turned back
OMG I love that you noticed the appendix plot hole; I thought I was the only one.
I liked this episode quite a bit; a little freaky with the concept, but disturbing and a little sad knowing Legion was just trying to survive, I almost hoped they could have found a solution for Legion that could have allowed it some existence.
Even Daleks like the lightbulb joke.
This is one of my all time favorites . So many good ideas. Perhaps the being could be a non human lifeform; and thus an alien intelligence of sorts.
Fantastic episode
This is a great episode.
one of my favorite scenes in science fiction is the casual surgery legion performs on Lister.
One of the best episodes of the show. Can't wait for Gunman, it contains the single best joke in ALL of Red Dwarf.
Love this episode genius idea for hard light hologram

Also, the whole "gestalt entity on an abandoned base" was actually a plot point in Blake's 7...but amazingly, Red Dwarf did it better!
There stuck in space Lister is the last human alive staying here with Leigon is the best case scenario

One of the top of all sci-Fi
4:35 surely that in the corner there is not an Easter Egg for a certain useful device called "Orac"? 😁
Lister and space weevils... Practically cannibalism...

Because they don't want to be trapped with a psychopath.
Plus the whole point is getting back to earth they can't do that if they're stuck in deep space
Well we know one thing sir!
Looks like orac from Blake’s seven at 3:30
3:01 "Heidegger, Davro .." That's a reference to Bobby Davro, a, let's be kind, unsophisticated English comedian. Also, Heidegger wasn't a physicist.
Would have never left
Davro? Davros?? ... Or how 'bout Quayle? Former American vice president reference... Harsh.
Love it
I think red suited Rimmer better.
Is it just me, or did the show change a little?
Sirens? Legions?

It's more villain of the week than monster of the week seeing as there's episodes with human and digital villains and in Rimmerworld's case human
It's more the big book of myths- legion and Horsemen are from the bible, great book of myths if there ever was one. (call me legion for I am many, new testament)
Is this the only time they say: dwarfer in show?
Everyone type in Killer Bikini Vampire Girls, and just see what pops up on RUclips.
2:33 so you saw that episode to, lol.

Those who prefer season 1,2,3 look down on those who prefer series 4,5,6 and vice versa. Almost everyone hates 7.
I'd rather just focus on what I enjoy and not worry about what other people like.
I like all of them. they are all different and the cast is the best.
