My youngest daughter received a 20 plus year UFO after her 2020 graduation, it was completed in December of her graduation year too! It was the quilt that brought me back into this amazing craft. It sits on her bed now in her college apartment. When I broke it out during lockdown, after mask making, I said “these fabrics are so 1990’s” and her reply was “I love them”! This is the child that loves every quilt I make and has assisted me many times in my quilting endeavors. It’s a quilt that bonds us together on so many levels. You have made a beautiful heirloom that your daughter will forever treasure. Definitely worth shedding a few sentimental tears over. It’s so beautiful Cathy with a C!!! ❤️

I know when I see you sitting on the blue sofa that we're in for a treat. We've followed the journey of your daughter's quilt through your videos, the choosing of the fabric colours, the 'frog' marking on the fabric (which I love), and it's lovely to see the finished product. However, whilst anyone seeing the quilt will see the work that has gone into making it, they won't be aware of the love and care you have invested in every part of it's journey. I'm sure your daughter will treasure her beautiful quilt, but I hope she'll treasure this video too because it's the story of her quilt, and her mother's gift of love. ❤

I relate so much to this - the tears and the stall out. When I was pregnant with my one and only child, I wanted to know the sex so I could pick the right fabrics for a baby quilt for him. I was a hand piecer and quilter at the time. So, I bought the fabric when I was pregnant. I finished the quilt for his 5th birthday 😮. I added an extra border to make it big enough to sort of be a topper on his twin size bed. I had a picture of the two of us when he was a baby that I transferred to fabric to use as the tag. I finished it late one evening. I spread it out on the floor and shed some tears. He turned 25 a few months ago. I still look at that quilt and love it because it captures all those feelings of being pregnant and the first few years of his life.

I think the most important part of the journey in creating a quilt comes from the personal thoughts we put into the selection of materials used … all the way down to the threading and final label. No tears are ever wasted in the completion of any project. The tears become the applause of the hours shared with the twisting of memories and “mistakes” that makes the final product an absolute work of love. Fear not that a recipient would ever tire of the aged out fabric selection. It’s merely their unique story that will be told repeatedly from one generation to the next. Is there any good reason NOT to quilt? Love your stories💖👼🌟

My maternal grandmother had a number of quilts made by her mother. When she died my aunts took the ones they wanted and there were 2 left which they allowed my sister and I to have. We were sent to the bedroom where they were and told to decide who was to get each one. Luckily my sister and I value very different things. She wanted the one that was very crisp and new looking and which was machine quilted. I wanted the duller looking one which was had pieced and hand quilted by my great grandmother. I was lucky enough to have known her and had her in my life until I was an adult.

I have a small trinket of hers that I cherish. My dad has told me stories about her quilts, and I would give a high price to get my hands on one of them. I’m sure you’ll cherish it forever!

Tears fell as I watched this video of your beautiful gift to your daughter. It's not just the beautiful quilt that got me - but the backstory of your daughter's love of nature. The quilt is beautiful and I especially LOVE the fabric for the backing. I started a quilt when we were expecting our eldest child but never finished it. Our daughter is now 36 years old. I recently pulled out the hand pieced yellow/white blocks and have fallen in love with the fabrics all over again. Your video gives me the inspiration that I needed - and now have the time to finish. Thank you for the love you share with all of us.

Loved the story about this quilt. I've never quite got ALL of my seams matching perfectly despite 15 years of trying so I sort of gave up on that. I figure once it's washed no-one will notice and, anyway, it's still a quilt that will keep someone cosy and warm and will be loved and treasured because it was made for that person. Love your videos and watch them over and over.

Oh Cathy…as a recently retired Biology/AP Biology teacher, I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to hear about your precious daughter, the born naturalist! She instinctively embraces the “perfection in the imperfections” of the natural world. Had I been her science teacher I’d have encouraged her to pursue a career in the natural sciences. She has the curiosity and esthetic of a natural science major.
    🌸 🐝 🍄🐚🪺🍁
My students and I would regularly observe and/or collect unusual and interesting specimens together, amazed and fascinated by their beauty. I could see a budding biologist emerging in each and every student.
The story of your daughter, her curious heart and adventurous soul made me miss my students and classroom deeply. And your “quilt hug”, made with an abundance of love and an appreciation for your child’s wonder and amazement for the natural world brought tears to my eyes. What a perfect gift for such a brilliant and sweet girl.
Thank you so much for sharing your story, and for reminding me of how deeply I love and appreciated my students and their curiosity. Precious! Thank you ❤️

Oh my goodness, Shannon! 🥰❤️ I love that you were reminded of your love for your students! You are so right, she is a born naturalist…and has been since day 1. When she was a baby I would bundle her up and walk around our yard (in Pennsylvania) and talk to her about the nature of our yard (conifers, Ivy, snow, deer! Lol) I love that curiosity in her, just as you do/did in your students, and I agree that should would likely shine in career in the natural sciences! Thank you for your wonderful comment!❤️

Whether or not she becomes a naturalist by vocation or avocation, she most certainly has the gift, thanks to your woodland walks. Aren’t we blessed to have these wonderful people in our lives and our world. ❤️ Her quilt is so preciously fitting and your love for your family so deeply expressed by its creation. Hearts and hands! Ok. Well now I’m crying! What a LOVELY quilt story. As a mom of twin HS juniors, I am approaching the dual graduations and an empty nest. I taught myself to quilt during Covid as a way to stay positive and learn a new skill. Your quilt story is so touching. Being new to the hobby, I’ve seen many quilters tell stories of their quilt gifts being unwanted or poorly treated, and as a consequence reluctantly vowed to only make things that I would keep (no gifts). Thank you for restoring my faith in the art of giving by working with the recipient on details they will treasure. Giving has always brought such joy. You are an inspiration to the craft.

Lori, I swear you make me blush and tear up and smile widely and feel humbled with nearly every comment! What a gift to speak words from the heart TO the heart.❤️ When you truly consider what the receiver will want/loves and or their taste in color and style, it's hard to go wrong, in my opinion. 🤓 And ultimately what the receiver does with ANY gift (quilt or otherwise) is on them---once you let go of how it will be received (hard for me, honestly. I want people to gush! 😂) Then the joy really IS in the giving.🥰

Oh my dearest STEM sister 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 …. I love hearing your epic stories of making things. Seriously … there is a part of my art heart that completely gets the wrenching conflict between what “accurate” is in a chem lab or a calculus proof versus what is possible with our hands even though we try really hard. The value is in our hands and intentions of love, not in the precision. You. Made. Frog. Material. For. This. Quilt. I had to rewind the video because I didn’t think I had heard you correctly. Oh my god. That is sublime. It says “Dear child of mine, I love you this much”. I am SO GLAD the label came out as an organic expression. I think making things are kind of like hand writing. We want to see the hand as much as the message. Thank you so much for sharing this story. 💕💕💕💕

I am so glad that I watched this video. Two things really spoke to me. The first is about whether or not the young recipient will still like the theme of a quilt that was given to them when they've grown up. I want to make quilts for my cousin's three oldest since I just made a baby quilt for their baby brother. They are turning 13, 11, and 7 this summer. I was worrying, particularly about the younger girls having their tastes change as they get older. Knowing that they can still look on the quilts with fondness really helps. The second thing was acknowledging that there are things in life that can sidetrack my progress on my current project, and that is okay. I will get my quilt finished once my leg heals. I managed to sprain one of my calf muscles where it attaches to my Achilles tendon and can't do any weight bearing for a week or more.

I love your quilt stories. So many of my quilts are just made.... maybe half of them, just because I love the fabric or the pattern or just want to make a dent in my stash. The other half are very intentional, like the quilts you are discussing, made with someone specific in mind. It's magical really how working on those very intentional quilts are almost magical. The color and fabrics go so well together. They melt into each other . The design still looks original to you. I've not seen another like it. Good for you. As for the quilting, I can't see it at all. I use poly batting for quilts that will be for someone who will think they should wash it in a machine on hot setting. Yikes! All baby quilts will be poly. Very pretty.

Another wonderful quilt story ❤️. The quilt is beautiful and your daughter sounds like a wonderful person. My kids prefer everything to be handmade too. I've always liked that myself. A beautiful story and a beautiful quilt. I have often put my favorite fabric of the mix on the back of a quilt, especially larger quilts that might go on a bed, because usually it's the side that's next to the person using the quilt. I love that and I love the surprise of fabulous backs! I've often made a secondary quilt with leftover blocks and that goes on the back. I remember you choosing the binding fabric - the perfect color choice! Your attention to the label reminds me of my godson who said of my own "raggedy" stitches - "Auntie F, those are love stitches!" So there you are, they're not raggedy, they're love-ly!

Ok listen, I'm over half a century old and I STILL love little froggies. 🐸 I was excited to see this one and even said to the cats, "Oh, she's talked about this one!" so yes, I remember those videos! I think the way you've laid out the colors on the top is lovely and has more impact that way.
I could tell the backing fabric was trees/a forest from the wide shot, but then when it zoomed in to show the girls climbing and peeking and playing... I totally teared up. It underlined how much you made a quilt that matches your daughter, and the story of you making this quilt tells a story about her as well. And the binding! That you picked out with your other daughter! That looks like bark! #SomethingInMyEye
The quilt stories are valuable, yes! They provide context and a bridge between narrative and tangible heirlooms because history, folklore, and family story isn't just the words. I think people should remember that. This quilt IS a history, and it was wonderful of you to share the story with us. We're on this ride with you now!

I'm extremely interested to hear about the fabric markers you used in this quilt. I'm running into a problem finding a low volume fabric in white and navy. I haven had time to go to GoodWill to search for some men's shirts that might fit the bill. My daughter is a graphic artist so if it comes down to it she will help me design some. I'm a relatively new quilter and definitely a frugal quilter so mens shirts make a lot of sense to me. A friend recommended your sight and I'm enjoying learning from you. I think you are the first quilter that I've seen not add a border on your quilts...just the binding. I kinda like thar. 😊
