The prosecutor refusing to drop the case and admit she was wrong after seeing the evidence is absolutely pathatic
And scary.
Not surprising, though.
She had no other leads.
@@maxscameraguyfunny I thought the job of a prosecutor was to pursue justice, but this would make it seem like simply causing a person to be incarcerated would be seen as a suscess in fulfilling their duty. It's almost as if the penal system doesn't actually exist to enforce an egalitarian rule of law. Curious no?
@hillbillypowpow people are flawed. Justice systems will be too.
If the film crew hadn't been there, an innocent man might be in jail and four murderers would be on the loose. Makes you wonder about the police work on this case.
It's already shoddy - the detectives copped to setting him up just to get the case "solved."
This is also a textbook example of why there should be no death penalty. Imprisoning an innocent person is terrible but at least there is the possibility of letting a man out if you can find new evidence or win an appeal. Whereas once someone is executed there’s no way you can attempt to reverse what you have done
Not only did a dozen cops pull their guns on an innocent man and his child daughter, but after he was found on the tape THEY STILL PURSUED THE CHARGES. utterly despicable, inhuman behavior. They had to have been presented the tapes for it to be admitted to evidence, they literally had to have seen that the man was undeniably elsewhere when the crime they were charging him for happened and they wouldn't drop the case. That is a nearly unfathomable level of both malice and incompetence, there's simply no other way to see it.
Also insane to hear that the cops/prosecutor didn’t want to “lose” the case. As if incorrectly incarcerating and possibly killing a man would be a “win” just because they wouldn’t have to admit they were wrong.
@@sonewwave8923 American law unforcement tends to be cruel and unscrupulous as a rule
Great story but you gotta give credit to the man’s lawyer. Most lawyers would never have gone that far for a client. He’s a hero.
Definitely get what you pay for when you get a lawyee
Really? Your client who’s gonna be on death row said he was at the game and you don’t go looking for footage? That’s the whole point of hiring a lawyer.
@@whatsadog2445The unfortunate reality is that many lawyers don’t work that hard to fulfill their duties to the client.
@@whatsadog2445wait, there are people who don’t work super hard at their job? Never could have imagined.
Given that all prosecutors are also lawyers, yeah, most lawyers are scumbags.
But hey, having a pessimistic look at this isn't good but there's still a sad reality that shady police and their lawyer and political supporters is absolutely a thing.
imagine how many other innocent people are wrongfully accused like this and never get the chance to prove their innocence.
and to think that the punishment is the death penalty
@@ken__2526 Yeah, shittiest part is they just tack it on so you don't even fight it. He most likely would have pled guilty just so he wouldnt be sentenced to death.
It's heartbreaking and infuriating at the same time.
Thankfully in this day and age, we have cameras everywhere and this can be less common
Guilty until proven innocent
I was on trial for something I didn't do, and the prosecutor told my attorney " I don't think he is guilty but if I can get the conviction I will". That is how the "Justice" system works. I won my trial but it cost me 14 months and $42000.
Woah 😮
I'm so sorry they treated you like this. We have a monstrous system, and prosecutors are just wannabe cops. Grotesque.
Please tell me you were able to counter sue for financial and mental damages?
Oh I believe you it's allllll about how much money you have and you're prior convictions if any
Trust me, prosecutors don't want to be cops, if they wanted to be a cop they would be a cop.@@GodheadNee
I can just see the real killer going to jail and just nodding, shrugging, and saying "alright" while the Curb theme plays
JAI YA!
JAI YA!
Pretty pretty pretty good
that's a pretty pretty pretty pretty clever comment you just wrote
I think the bigger issue is that when the prosecutors were told they had him on the tape they didn't just immediately drop all charges but kept trying to convict him even though they knew he was innocent
Alarming that someone who's clearly innocent can be that close to a conviction. How can the prosecutor possibly gather that much evidence when there's actually no evidence of his guilt or even his presence in the vicinity of the crime?
Welcome to the American justice system. It's run by humans each with their own agenda
Welcome to America I suppose…
Haven’t you heard about the innocence project? America is the worst developed nation in the world.
Racism?
The answer: Guy is a minority, minorities in the US have been charged for less, so frequent you see stories of cop shoots innocent people on the streets
Thank you, Curb Your Enthusiasm, for taking the time to review the tape. What a wonderful story.
No problem. We are here for the fans and the people.
it’s not wonderful, it’s terrifying
@@OrangeJews1138You’re missing the point. It’s both, but mostly wonderful. Instead of a corrupt system closing the case on an innocent man, he was freed, and they caught four people that are hopefully the bad guys. This guy’s life and family was saved by a miracle. Thanks Larry🎉
@@mkhanman12345thank you mr. enthusiasm
The documentary "Long Shot" (2017) on Netflix covers this story. It's really gripping. The Curb Your Enthusiasm footage alone wasn't enough, there was another piece of evidence that was needed to save him.
What other evidence
@@ThumbDr The documentary "Long Shot" (2017) on Netflix covers this story. It's really gripping.
@@ThumbDr I believe it was cell phone records showing that he made a call to his wife about heading home with his daughter from the game at the stadium, proving that he was nowhere near the scene of the crime and did not have enough time to drive over to commit the killing
Jesus. The us justice system is an actual nightmare when you are the suspect. So terrifying that innocent people still get locked up so frequently with the science and technology we have.
How is that possible? The burden of proof is in the prosecutor, innocent until proven guilty or is that just a catchphrase!
The detectives are whats wrong with the justice system in this case. They basically said he's guilty and so he HAS TO PROVE HIS INNOCENCE
the fact that they didn't drop the case despite video evidence exonerating him... wild
average american prosecutor moment
Was gonna say the same. What a rotten mindest of these prosecuters to want to continue just to "win"! It's also the injust system that encourages this
Its a top 5 episode for me because of the Funkhauser subplot, but saving an innocent man from a (still broken) LAPD and State Prosecutors office was a miracle.
Fun Fact! The LAPD's tactics have been tied to the CIA and Vietnam era programs like PHOENIX since the 70s!
Shout out to Todd Melnik for 'going to bat' for his client and pushing for this footage. That's great lawyer work right there.
You mean to tell me that there are no cameras at Dodger stadium that could’ve also exonerated this man? Crazy to me that it took coincidental footage from Curb to save this man.
It was 2003. CCTV with high enough resolution to tell much of anything was still pretty uncommon.
I guess but it's pretty hard to believe a super large venue like did have at very least b&w cameras at the entrances & ticket scan??@@NME1012
@@NME1012you can see the editors in these 7 minutes were struggling
you saw footage from the game from the stadium cameras. one person is 2 pixels, not enough to identify anyone
Susie: "Get me the f*****g video!"
Lol
So they arrested a guy, they were ready to put him on death row without any SOLID evidence? I'd really like to know what lead the authorities to this man
Maybe he was wrongfully accused
by someone who personally knew him
this was before the case went to trial too, the judge only dismisses the case in the video the man never went to trial, in reality he probably wasn't going to get sentenced anyways as there was no evidence against him
@@beagie666you don't get put on death row because someone says you committed a crime with no proof
The prosecutor was using the sunken costs fallacy as a reason to keep going. She had already put in the money and work to convict him, and weighed the losses of dropping the case against ending the man's life. *Pure evil.*
And this is why you can never convince me that there should be a death penalty. If there was a magical way we could ever know with 100% certainty that someone did something, that'd be different. But the justice system makes mistakes at best and at worst is deeply corrupt. The state has already been responsible for known wrongful executions. This could have been another one.
Exactly. The state can’t be trusted to be able to execute people.
Sure but by that same logic no one should ever be jailed because it could be a mistake or corruption.
Honestly, I’d rather be wrongfully executed than wrongfully locked up for decades. That’s even worse.
@@TP-pq9xx The point being that if you're locked up from being wrongfully accused/convicted, you have avenues to appeal and get exonerated. If you're dead, you're dead. You'd be in the minority to prefer being dead.
@@TP-pq9xx "I'd rather die than survive"
Millions of years of your ancestors before they even evolved into humans disagree with you.
@@TP-pq9xxnot even close to the same logic, go back to school
Why the f*c they arrested that man in the first place? Hope the cops got an investigation on themselves for that.
I’m sure they didn’t
they investigated themselves and found no wrongdoing
@@sgtjonzo😂
Why do people keep making this joke? Do they not understand how IA works?@@sgtjonzo
ha!
The Curb music playing throughout this story 😂
The irony of a man who ended a series he co-created by having his main characters thrown in jail for being horrible people being responsible, in part, for helping an innocent man be released from jail is a wonderful cosmic...something.
Deeply underrated comment. Hadn't even occurred to me
This isn't ironic. It's a very remarkable coincidence, but it's not ironic.
And then at the end, he was thrown in jail and released again 😭🙏
Larry’s life is so much stranger than fiction. It’s amazing.
Not wanting to lose being more important than justice illustrates one of the many problems with law enforcement and the DA’s office.
Innocent until proven guilty? More like guilty until proven innocent!
Only if you’re a minority
I always thought it should be "Innocent UNLESS proven guilty".
"Until" implies you will be
Larry David has brought much joy into my life...Thank you, LD!
...and Larry David has looked exactly the same for the last 30+ years. 😂
Best arguement against the death penalty I've heard
Larry saves the day, again. Well done LD
"We were in for an enormous fight. The prosecutor they had assigned to the case had never lost. She liked to pick off people with the death penalty."
Todd Melnik on Beth Silverman (from the Netflix documentary Long Shot)
I’m going to miss Curb! Thanks Larry!
Crazy to me how a professional trained in law has to do the work of a detective. Surely this should be the responsibility of police: to verify someone’s alibi.
Thank you Larry and the entire team of curb!
I'd like to know more details about this case - why did they think he did it? Was it just someone mistook him for someone else? Or was he tangentially involved in other evidence?
Just Google his name, there's a public record.
The full doc of this case is amazing really sad when u see the girl on the stand & her dad crying. ❤
My favourite episode. Picking up a pros just so you can use the carpool lane I think is still brilliant.
Amazing story and what an amazing lawyer this man was fortunate enough to have! I hope that capital punishment is finally abolished for good in this country in part so that more people in Juan's shoes have a chance at real justice and getting their lives back in order.
The thing to not lose sight of is had this video evidence not been found, an innocent man could have been put to death.
the most wonderful show of all times. Larry is magnificent
This Is Such A Bizarre Story- One Of My Favorite Episodes Ever & Then There’s This Tied Along With It! Wow, Glad The Guy Wasn’t Wrongly Convicted
Geeze, glad it worked out! I’m really appalled and angry at the cops for pointing their guns and being dramatic when arresting the guy. There was no reason to traumatize his children like that!!! Shame on them!
This story was insane. Thank goodness...
Has to be one of the most interesting documentary I’ve ever seen. Like on the federal side of the law how does one slack off in letting the actual criminal run free and have an incident civilian rot away. All because of a hunch,
a feeling or guess based on intuition rather than known actual facts.
The CYE episode played a part, but not the main part. It was said that he still would have had enough time to get from the stadium to the girl. His defender asked if he used his cell phone at any point in the night. He said "Yes, right after the game". That cell tower ping placed him at Dodger Stadium at 10:13, making it impossible for him to be the one that murdered the girl.
It's more romantic to think it was only the show that saved him, but lets not muddy the facts here.
I wonder what evidence they had on him that they wanted to proceed with the case after an alibi was established. Even without footage, like if he had ticket stubs or a receipt or anything, most police will actually move on from you if they think you have a good alibi. It is the absolutely best defense you can have, really. That's why the judge dismissed the case flat out.
Watch the documentary.
Life and death situation and they use a boing sound effect when pointing to the wrongly accused. Perfect.
One thing that they fail to mention in this video is that Martha Puebla, the murdered 16 year old, was killed because she testified at a court hearing against Mario Catalan. Mario is the brother of Juan Catalan.
Juan Catalan was still innocent of killing Martha Puebla though.
This is amazing!
I LOVE THIS, I LOVE THAT IT WORKED OUT FOR ONCE!!! (Usually, it doesn't!)
I LOVE LARRY, I LOVE CURB!
This is ALL SO BLOODY MARVELOUS!!! ! ! !
Great story. Kudos to Attorney Todd Melnik, a defense attorney that is willing to go the extra mile for a client who isn't wealthy and privileged.
"Your case seems airtight but there's one snag"
"What's that?"
"The defendant was on Curb Your Enthusiasm when the crime happened"
It may be played off for laughs now, but make no mistake… this was a serious situation with great consequences.
I have no idea what this show is about, but this DEFINITELY has made me wanna watch it. Congratulations to everyone involved in absolving the man. And shame to that prosecutor, should be arrested.
It was the wisdom of the judge that saved that man.
My favorite show, and this episode is epic. And now it saved a man from jail. It's a mitzwah!
Incredible!!
Shows you how ignorant some cops are and prosecutors.. and calling them ignorant is being kind.. because they probably knew he was innocent and they could care less.
All the people in jail with no proof of innocence.
This is Beautiful
0:27 thats the same sound effect that scott used in the first fnaf game LOL its just played at a normal rate instead of being slowed down.
I heard about this story right after the episode aired years ago. If anyone is interested Netflix has a short documentary on this that came out in 2017 called "Long Shot" Rated R 2017 ‧ Documentary/Sport ‧ 40 mins. It's a great watch
WOW! THAT IS INCREDIBLE!!! HE IS RIGHT THERE! OUT OF THE ENTIRE STADIUM AND THE TIME STAMP ON THE FILM, HE IS CLEARLY IN THE SHOT NEAR LARRY! THAT WAS A FUNNY EPISODE TOO! THE LADY MADE IT EXTRA FUNNY! SHE WAS SO CUTE! ❤
That left a ringing in my eyes.
you would think HBO of all channels would know how to normalize their own audio lol
Their app has basic functionality problems all the time, as well.
It's a wonder where all the money they make goes, its not to the craft...
The incompetence and ego of police and prosecutors will never cease to amaze me. The importance and power and seriousness that comes with those jobs can not be overstated. Unfortunately their incompetence and bias and ego and career drives can not be overstated as well. Abolish qualified immunity, it should not exist.
Larry saves the day yet again!!!
pretty pretty pretty good
This is why the death penalty should be banned outright! Imagine if they didn’t have a tape!
Did the stadium not have multiple cameras at entry points? Surely there have been footage and receipts putting him at the game
he had the ticket stubs and they looked throught camera footage from the stadium and couldnt find him..also 20 years ago footage was weak and not as many cameras. theirs a documentary on netflix called long shot. that goes in to further detail
@@DannyCosmosI worked at a big department store back then - we had about 16 cameras all recording to one VCR in black and white. You couldn’t make out anything.
There goes my dream of making a cameo on this show. Tear.

That lawyer is fantastic!
Mr ballen covered this story. Such a good story teller
Can we please start mentioning the names of the attorneys that pursue conviction of innocent people?!?!?!
This has always been a legendary story. It’s kinda of a shame that we didn’t get to see he defeat and lawyer cameo on the CYE finale, considering how the last episode was mostly in a court room
It would have been a wonderful Sean song if they were extras, as members of the jury
So he would have been convicted and sentenced to DEATH without the tape? Is the justice system this broken? Got to rethink capital punishment if the DA is this incompetent or at worse this corrupt.
holy god this is amazing
The suspenseful music made me question if this was just a bit or something lol
death penalty without much evidence is terrifying
I bet curb became his favorite show after, it would definitely become mine lol. Love curb!
My God what an incident, what a story
I imagine Juan Catalan saying, "pretty, pretteeeeeee good" when he got the news
That is so cool!
Thank god for Curb!
WOW - THANK GOODNESS!!!!
Larry is a true hero!
its like a real curb episode
how about only prosecuting people, when there's a case to be made for them being guilty
There almost certainly would have been security camera footage and a ton of other indications he was at the game (like the people sitting next to him), but this is a fantastic way to exonerate a guy!
And yeah, it's absolutely outrageous that the prosecutor didn't immediately withdraw the case once they saw the footage.
Comedy and Music saving the World! ❤
He'll do anything for me now! Hahah LD never change!
Craziest crossover ever
“The prosecutor did not wanted to lose, the police did not wanted to lose ...”
Did they thought this was a game?
they were looking for an easy person to blame, an open and shut case, no questions asked.
Racial discrimination in la county curbed by curb
Hmmm, now I don't know if I trust the prosecutors about those other people they arrested subsequently
Larry needs to make an episode with that dude
I wish they would have put him in the show or something. Glad all these got ironed out and hes a free man!
What an incredible and extraordinary miracle
miracle?
This almost makes it look authentic!
This man was saved from the corrupt incompetent NY Justice system because of a satire show. It’s poetic in a way
