I didn't make any lifestyle changes. I actually worked the night shift and worked lots of overtime on a regular basis and didn't get much sleep for many years. My food choices never changed. I didn't use any special moisturizer. Somehow, I just had very good results. It could possibly be my genes. My mother and father had beautiful skin especially my mother. Maybe it's my race. My mother had beautiful skin up until her death at the age of 86 and a half. Minimal to no wrinkles. Smooth silky skin. I suffered from acne break outs off and on since my teens. It stopped during my childbearing years and then started back again off and on after I finished having my children. I was in my 40's and was still breaking out. I couldn't stand it any longer. My doctor prescribed me the Tretinoin lowest dosage. She also prescribed me benzoyl peroxide acne cream. The pharmacist told me that I could get the same benzoyl peroxide acne cream OTC and so I did. My face cleared up so well that I stopped using the benzoyl peroxide and would use the Tretinoin cream 2 to 5 per week. Now I hardly ever have to use the Tretinoin cream. My skin just responded well. I have had phenomenal results and will only have a very mild break out maybe once per year or less. I haven't had to use my Tretinoin cream in awhile now.
I'm 74 and started using Tretinoin about 1.5 years ago. I wanted to get rid of age/dark spots and it has done wonders. I use it regularly and avoid the sun and use SPF 50. One spot was quite large and is almost gone, but it got darker before it started to leave. I also see some improvement in my jowls which are pretty severe from not only age, but a very large weight loss 10 years ago. He's right in that it takes time!
I'm about to begin using Tretinoin for the first time and have been watching various beauty channel videos to get a feel for what to expect and tips on usage. Yours was clear, concise and informative, Dr. I especially appreciated the fact that you didn't try to minimize or gloss over the time commitment or "purge" issue, as some do in their videos. Lol I'm so glad but not so glad that my dr didn't tell me about the purging. I kept with it through the acne. I finally broke down and called the drs office and that's when she told me about the purging. They dropped me down to 0.025 from .05 3x a week. The acne was BAD but I stuck it out. I'm so glad I did. I got a great regimen on my next appointment and some samples. I'm so excited. I'm 37 with adult hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation and sun damage. I'm so happy I finally went to the dermatologist.
I used the Retin A when I was 14 years old because I had flat warts on my forehead. Back in the 70’s they really didn’t push the sunscreen and I was a little fish in the summer and stayed out swimming in the sun all day long. Long story short I looked like a very ripe tomato after a full day of swimming and my skin peeled many layers taking over two weeks! It was agony, but after the peeling process was done, my skin was flawless not even a freckle here or there lol. I’m currently using it again but you do need to start slow because it will make your skin feel like it is burnt if you over use it. Definitely put on sunscreen!! The reason I’m using it is trying to get rid of those 60 year old wrinkles, and a couple of warts on my forehead. So far the warts have disappeared. But my Wrinkles are still there 😞

Here in Australia we only have Tretinoin Cream. The only way we can get it in a gel formula is a product called Acnatac, which is Clindamycin + Tretinoin.
I LOVE Altreno. I used .025% cream for 13.5 years and could NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME go up to .05%. Earlier this year my dr prescribed Altreno to see if we could finally go up and now it’s just amazing. Little to no irritation at all and the texture is more of a serum than a lotion just the slightest bit more viscous than normal serum. Makes it so easier to use half of a pea sized amount because it spreads so much easier. I do still buffer tho just because I’m scared it’ll eventually irritate but so far so good!
Thank you 😊 One more doubt, I using retino A( used 2 time in 10days) after that I got 2-3pimples , can continue to use or should I wait to cure pimple. Please reply…
Thanks for sharing. Can I mix tretinoin with the moisturizer & apply to my face? Also, what do you think Aveeno skincare products; are the mild enough to use?
Thank you so much for your patient explanation on how to best use Tretinoin. I had a consult with a dermatologist earlier this week and was prescribed Tretinoin but she did not give me any instructions on how to best use it.
This is exactly the kind of video that made me push and push, for 1,5 years and to reach to a point where skin care did not offer me any joy. I followed the instructions to the T, and it still was not enough and I became so depressed. Exactly, trying to push and to reach that diamond mine, like in this video. I wish such videos would mention that tretinoin is NOT for everyone and it is totally fine to use retinal or retinol products instead and get as good results. I went back to retinal and my skin is looking much better and my joy in using skin care has returned.
You are the first doctor that explained about tretinoin. I did not know the difference between the gel and cream. I have been using the gel for year for anti-aging and not getting the full benefit. Well thank you for the awesome video. A question: I have wrinkles around my eyes so is there a safe way to use tretinoin around the eyes?
Hi doc .l guess I gave up so soon on using it..not even a month..l think I will have to try again.. hope l won't give up again n l will try following the tips. Thanks
This really worked on my skin. Love it. I will say my skin looks much better. It is not oily at all but my skin looks very shiny. Or I guess I could say it is glowing!
Great tips Dr. I have heard of Tretinoin for years, but fear to use it, also not consistent with any skin care regimen. This is a more natural way to ward off wrinkles, I'm thinking I should try it.
You answered my question I’ve been on the .025 for about 6 weeks now and it seems to be giving me more acne and more pimples like whoa i was just about to quit . I hope this purging ends soon
This was really helpful doc, I needed this words encouragement, I just started using tretinion and I was misinformed , I developed so much pustules, my skin became hypersensitive reacting to everything, got more products and got worse , now I understand I need to continue but. Make smart moves with my moisturiser, I sincerely pray your recommendation post helps out, please reply with any advice thanks
Thank you very much for your video. I started using tretinoin at 0.5 and now wake up with spots (purging). I was about to give up until I viewed your video , which gave me some hope.
Here is a tip from someone who has been using RetinA 0.05% for the last 40 years on his face ..wear nitrile gloves when you apply and massage the creme ! because the skin on your finger tip absorbs about as much as the skin on your face, so you waste 50% of that precious tube into your finger..unless your goal is to reduce finger wrinkles!! buy nitrile gloves one size larger and you can re-use the same glove many times.
You can use a niacinamide serum before the tretinoin so that it helps to buffer/mitigate the irritation. Only a suggestion of the many sufficient methods.
Thank you Dr. Aspires. I have watched numerous videos about tretinoid. Your video is very informative and helpful! With your slower speed explanations, that helps digesting all the information! Again, very appreciated!
Thanks for this video I gave up already. Will start back tonight. It left my face darker, am doing 2 months on hydroquinone and 2 months off and tretinoin same. My face was so clear with the hydroquinone and now a month of tretinoin it's full with hyperpigmentation. Really dark so I stopped and called my dermatologist he wants me come to office for evaluation. Thanks
I would love your input on this idea: how quickly can or should I expect to acclimate to Tretinoin if I've been using adapalene for 2.5 years prior? I was on 0.1% adapalene for 2.5 (although not nightly because I alternated with other products like exfoliants, or azelaic acid/niacinamide/kojic acid etc products so as not to aggravate my skin), and my skin has improved A LOT - sun spots/hyperpigmentation lightening, looking younger now than I did 2.5 years ago, even my moles are shrinking and fading, and I rarely get a pimple. I just started Tretinoin 0.025% through an online derm; I've used it once this week so far, absolutely no irritation. I feel like maybe I'm one of the people who can tolerate using 3-4 nights a week since I'm so used to a prescription strength retinoid? Thanks in advance! I have dry sometimes sensitive skin (but live in a dry climate).
I have rosacea and sensitive skin but was able to jump immediately to tretinoin & also had no irritation or redness. If it’s working for you, i say go for it. I did the same frequency, so I’d already worked up to nightly w adapalene and just immediately moved to nightly tretinoin. I don’t think you’ll have any issues. I think a lot of the warnings about tretinoin irritationshave been largely exaggerated by the skincare channels. (Imo it’s more due to them overdoing other ingredients like exfoliants etc. And not the tretinoin itself.)
@@kouten07 adapalene is the generic name for Differin. It is the Rx retinoid family since it’s in the active form. It is made for more sensitive skin (since it only binds to 2 retinoid receptors, tret binds to 3 I think) & is more acne-targeted. Personally, it was first prescribed by my derm at the time, circa 2014. Then, in 2016, Differin/adapalene 0.1% went over the counter here in the US, so I started getting it that way instead. (Then I later bumped to tretinoin 0.025% for 2 years or so. Now am on 0.05% tretinoin. Both via Rx w current derm) Same side effects largely as any retinoid like tretinoin: risk for irritation, red, flaky skin. Can make you feel a bit dry. Can have purging when you start.
Hi Dr 😊 Are you able to tell me how many days / weeks I can actually go without using tretinoin at all before I begin losing the tolerance I am building? How quickly does your skin forget?
I’ve gone a week before and it’s been fine. But, made the mistake of going 2-3 weeks and had to go through everything again. I think using at least once a week is essential, no matter what.
I accidentally left mine behind when traveling. Two weeks later I had five blemishes erupt. Got a replacement prescription and quickly tamed my skin back. 68 years old. Using Stieva cream .5%
Thanks for your question! It really DEPENDS. Some may have to go through the reintroduction process at around the 2-3 week mark. While others a little shorter or longer.
Thanks for the question! The chances of purging can still be likely. This is because tretinoin is close to 10-20 times more potent than retinol. Some who make the switch from everyday retinol to tretinoin may notice a less severe purging period however. Less skin flakiness to be exact. This is more true from making the switch to 0.025 vs stronger concentrations. I hope that helps! 🤞
Thank you so much for your video, everything is so easy and to the point 😊 may I ask, do you have to wear spf indoors, if you aren't sitting near a window with direct sunlight?
Glad I could help! There is no need to wear it indoors if you are not near windows or direct sunlight. However! Some experts do say use caution and wear spf around blue light from your devices. Blue light does not cause sunburn but it may form free radicals that cause premature skin aging. I hope this helps! 🙏🏽
Thank you for this info, two questions please site. Is there a huge difference between using the gel or cream? Also, can one continue to use a red light therapy while using it?
I'm curious to know if one form of tretinoin is more or less sensitive to indoor lighing than the other? I like to apply around 7pm and then wait a couple of hours before applying moisturiser, but I wonder if indoor lighting degrades it significantly? I have both the cream and gel formulations and can use either without much irritation.
I never knew about the Renova for wrinkles. Only Tretenoin. I will definitely read up on Renova. I never have a reaction to Tretinoin. Does this mean its not working?
My skin, I believe, is in my stage of purging as I went to bed with clear skin and woke up with like a cluster of whitehead-like pustules in the left corner of my nose....should I just leave it as it is....or try to deal with it with a warm compress? So confused because I have never dealt with 'skin purging' :/
Great Video !! I’ve been using retina for years but I never put it on my neck but now I’ve noticed that my neck is a different color 😮 Can I use it there also !
Hello Dr. Aspires, I TRULY APPRECIATE your explanation and knowledge of how to use Tretinoin. I subscribed and looking forward to your future videos. You are awesome. No pretense just fact and great information.
Hi Dr. Arsalan thank you for such a wonderful video :) I would like to ask if the purging also happens to those who want to use the Tretinoin for photoaging and fine lines and don't have any acne issues, or does it only happen to people suffering from acne? Thank you :)
Is the goal to use this everyday? I’ve been applying 2-3 times a week for several months. Should I start applying daily? Thank you so much for your videos!
2 questions, I have been use OTC retinoids for many years and am about to start using Tretinoin for the first time. Will I see results sooner because my skin is acclimated to acids and retinoids? Also , should you increase the strength of the Tretinoin after a certain period of time, or is staying at the same strength ok? Ok , I I one last question, can you use Tretinoin on areas other than your face like hands , neck or chest? Thanks , I subscribed enjoyed your video!
I use my tretinoin on my face, neck and *entire* chest, (I’ve been on it for 5+ months now) and it has done wonders for my skin. I also use serums/lactic acid on my hands and arms every time I do my skincare. Tbh if I had a big enough monthly tube of tretinoin, I would definitely apply it on my arms and hands as well, because I have a lot of scarring on them and I know it would be incredibly beneficial- I just am not prescribed a big enough bottle. (It’s really tiny)
Please how effective is it with someone using it with minoxidil for beard growth, does it get any better incorporating tretinoin alongside minoxidil for better and faster results?
okay everyone on the internet seems to be able to somehow purchase tretinoin even though it is sold only with prescription. Apparently people mostly buy it for wrinkles so not even for acne or anything. So I would appreciate it if someone can share how they purchase it
I started with 0.25 and I'm now on the max of .1. My skin barely peeled. It got slightly irritated during the summer. I wear sunscreen religiously daily. it seemed like I went to a period of purge, but not so terrible, I'm now on month 7 and have not seen that flawless look or a major change. Should I continue using it? I use the Retin A cream.
Hi! I enjoy watching this video, very clear how you explain it in details. Im in my late 40's. My only problem is melasma & ageing. I've been using retinol serum, but now I just realized that tretinoin is way better. Can I use it as daily night routine? all year round now? Thanks a lot & Godbless
Yes, however it may be best to start slowly. One way to do that is to apply tretinoin every third night, then every other night, and then nightly as your skin tolerates. Skip a night or two if your skin is irritated. A healthcare provider can help you determine the best dosing regimen for you.
Hi! I have sensitive skin. I don’t have acne, but textured skin, and want to use it for anti-aging as well. Do you recommend a cream or gel version for my skin type? What about Steiva-A? Is this the same as Tretinoin? Thanks!
I started with 0.025 strength and then 0.05 , now I’m using 0.1 . I want the anti ageing benefit, but I’m only getting 0.1 strength in gel form. Should I go back to using 0.05in cream form?
Can I use Tretinoin with antibiotics like Erythromycin? 🥺 They’re both prescription products. And what about side effects-do they differ when using Tretinoin alone versus with antibiotics?
Last question, In the morning after I do my retinoid do I take it off with a cleanser ? Or just wash my face with water and continue with my normal sunblock and make up , silly question I know , but I wonder if I have to let the product work during the day .
Your content and production quality is up there with the top MD creators on RUclips. Channel will definitely blow up soon. When buffering tretinoin with an occlusive some doctors recommend applying the occlusive first on sensitive areas and then using the retinoid - the concept makes sense but won’t the occlusive mix with the retinoid, making it much too strong?
Thanks for your question. Applying an occlusive agent first would not bring a synergistic effect, in other words, it won’t increase the strength. The reason many suggest doing this is to minimize the chances/severity of the retinization period causing irritation and further inflammation. There is minor evidence to suggest “slugging” over the tretinoin by using it on top may “trap” the tretinoin thereby increasing irritation but some have no drawbacks from that either. This explains why this topic can be tricky to navigate as skin reactions will differ from person to person. I hope that made sense 🙂
Appreciated - makes a lot of sense. I understand that applying an occlusive over any product significantly increases its strength/skin penetration (aside from the evidence you mentioned). Therefore, my concern is that if I first apply an occlusive to sensitive areas, let it dry, and then apply the tretinoin - when applying the tret to the rest of the face (and going over the sensitive areas with the occlusive applied to them) I might be applying a mix of the occlusive and tret to other areas of the skin. Would that be harsh on the skin, or something not to worry about?
Hi..! I am 25 and I have started using Tretinoin 0.025% to treat my mild acne and acne marks and to improve my overall skin. I did not face any issues like irritation, purging, peeling or extreme dryness. However, after using it for 3 weeks now I have noticed my skin has gotten darker than before. I use sunscreen religiously and most of the times I remain indoors so I'm really confused and concerned what's causing me skin darkness. Pls anybody help me out... Whether it's a temporary issue or permanent.
@@durufrancisca991 Sadly no, I am about to give up on tretinoin. Coz earlier my face used to look dull and dark but now I see some brown patches around my cheeks. If it was other side effects like purging or peeling I might have continued to use tret because its normal to have initial purging and peeling but the darkness of face and brown patches that's something I really can't deal with. What changes u noticed with tretenoin ?

You are the first doctor that explained about tretinoin. I did not know the difference between the gel and cream. I have been using the gel for year for anti-aging and not getting the full benefit. Well thank you for the awesome video. A question: I have wrinkles around my eyes so is there a safe way to use tretinoin around the eyes?
By apply it the entire face will get the benefits even under your eyes. You don't need to apply under the eyes.
Applying under the eyes will cause severe drying and irritation. Underyes needs to be HYDRATED, so don't use retinol under the eyes!
@@andiewolf1540 Also makes my eyes red and watery if I get it too close! Definitely stay clear of the eyes.
I mix it with a dab of eye cream , obviously staying a quarter inch from the lash line .
@@NoseyFloridaGirl that is a great suggestion! Thanks!

Thank you for calmly & clearly relaying this info. I don't feel overwhelmed anymore. See you on the clearer and brighter side!❤
This really worked on my skin. Love it. I will say my skin looks much better. It is not oily at all but my skin looks very shiny. Or I guess I could say it is glowing!
How long it takes time to see results?
it's so wonderful, in my country is very cheap and you don't need a prescription from a dermatologist, but the product tag recommend it!!!

Same with me
Same with me, I was going to give up
Thanks alot.this is the best video ever on tretinion, thanks
You are welcome!
Thank you so much, Dr for this video. I’m using it now and I was feeling overwhelmed until I watched your video. Thank you so much!
Glad I can help! Wishing you success with it. 😃
Can i use with shiseldo products?
This was really helpful doc, I needed this words encouragement, I just started using tretinion and I was misinformed , I developed so much pustules, my skin became hypersensitive reacting to everything, got more products and got worse , now I understand I need to continue but. Make smart moves with my moisturiser, I sincerely pray your recommendation post helps out, please reply with any advice thanks
Wishing you utmost success and wellness your way Nancy. You got this!
When I’ve been off of it for awhile , I mix with moisturizer for a few weeks until I’m back on full strength.
I got a compounded tretinoin and I can finally use it everyday 😛
Nice! That’s one way to do it! 😃
Thank you very much for your video. I started using tretinoin at 0.5 and now wake up with spots (purging). I was about to give up until I viewed your video , which gave me some hope.
Hang in there 😊
This motivated me to continue for sure. thank you
You got this!
Hi Doc, can I use a niacinamide serum after cleansing, and then apply my tretinoin 20-30mins after?
That's exactly what I do, that's my secret combo 😂😂😂😂
My Curolgy mix contains both, so I’d say ‘yes’.
Hello Dr. can I use water based moisturizer with tretinoin?
Honestly, the best doctor yet!❤
Appreciate your way of explaining 🎉
The best video about using tretinoid. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
How do you layer serums like niacinamide. Do you use it before or after the retinol cream?
You can use a niacinamide serum before the tretinoin so that it helps to buffer/mitigate the irritation. Only a suggestion of the many sufficient methods.
I've been using max strength tretinoin for about 8 years and still get quite a bit of acne. It did get rid of most of the acne scars though.
What about the microgel form?

Happy that you are here! 😀
What is Adapelene? Did a dermatologist prescribe it? Sude effects? Never heard of it.
Both via Rx w current derm)
Same side effects largely as any retinoid like tretinoin: risk for irritation, red, flaky skin. Can make you feel a bit dry. Can have purging when you start.
I can’t believe I almost didn’t watch this video. 😭 Thank you!!
Hi Dr 😊 Are you able to tell me how many days / weeks I can actually go without using tretinoin at all before I begin losing the tolerance I am building? How quickly does your skin forget?
after a couple of years of nightly use you can cut back a night
I’ve gone a week before and it’s been fine. But, made the mistake of going 2-3 weeks and had to go through everything again. I think using at least once a week is essential, no matter what.
@@spookylittlebat Thank you so much xx
I accidentally left mine behind when traveling. Two weeks later I had five blemishes erupt. Got a replacement prescription and quickly tamed my skin back. 68 years old. Using Stieva cream .5%
Thanks for your question! It really DEPENDS. Some may have to go through the reintroduction process at around the 2-3 week mark. While others a little shorter or longer.

I used to have acne of all types for years but now my face is acne free thankx to Tretinoin,Life saver for me,the only thing that worked.
can you tell me the way you use tret😢😢
Would your skin purge if you are using retinol then changing to Tretinoin?
Thanks for making this beginner friendly! It can be overwhelming! 😅
Of course!
Thank you for this info, two questions please site. Is there a huge difference between using the gel or cream? Also, can one continue to use a red light therapy while using it?
Thank you! Your videos are always helpful.

This was an excellent video sir. Thank you!
Thank you for your feedback!
Great information thank you. Can I do Red Lightning therapy with tretinoin?
I'm curious to know if one form of tretinoin is more or less sensitive to indoor lighing than the other? I like to apply around 7pm and then wait a couple of hours before applying moisturiser, but I wonder if indoor lighting degrades it significantly? I have both the cream and gel formulations and can use either without much irritation.
I am wondering the same! Have you found any info on it?
I never knew about the Renova for wrinkles. Only Tretenoin. I will definitely read up on Renova.
I never have a reaction to Tretinoin. Does this mean its not working?
My skin, I believe, is in my stage of purging as I went to bed with clear skin and woke up with like a cluster of whitehead-like pustules in the left corner of my nose....should I just leave it as it is....or try to deal with it with a warm compress? So confused because I have never dealt with 'skin purging' :/
it will clear itself if you leave it alone
Great Video !! I’ve been using retina for years but I never put it on my neck but now I’ve noticed that my neck is a different color 😮 Can I use it there also !

What percentage would you recommend for someone who has been using 1.0% retinol for years but want to start on tretinoin?
You mean 0.1 percent.
Hi Dr. Arsalan thank you for such a wonderful video :)
I would like to ask if the purging also happens to those who want to use the Tretinoin for photoaging and fine lines and don't have any acne issues, or does it only happen to people suffering from acne?

But sometimes I use in Summer only a time a week. Is any problem in the Summer?
Is the goal to use this everyday? I’ve been applying 2-3 times a week for several months. Should I start applying daily? Thank you so much for your videos!
Did you purge while using tretinoin 2_3 times a week
2 questions, I have been use OTC retinoids for many years and am about to start using Tretinoin for the first time. Will I see results sooner because my skin is acclimated to acids and retinoids? Also , should you increase the strength of the Tretinoin after a certain period of time, or is staying at the same strength ok? Ok , I I one last question, can you use Tretinoin on areas other than your face like hands , neck or chest? Thanks , I subscribed enjoyed your video!
I don’t know whether you’ll see results sooner but you’re less likely to experience irritation since your skin is already used to using retinoids.
Otc does not compare to the real thing. Otc really does nothing.
Please how effective is it with someone using it with minoxidil for beard growth, does it get any better incorporating tretinoin alongside minoxidil for better and faster results?
Hi doc, what percentage do I use for my face ( does it work for both acne and dark spots?) and what percentage do I use for stretch marks
okay everyone on the internet seems to be able to somehow purchase tretinoin even though it is sold only with prescription. Apparently people mostly buy it for wrinkles so not even for acne or anything. So I would appreciate it if someone can share how they purchase it

I wear sunscreen religiously daily. it seemed like I went to a period of purge, but not so terrible, I'm now on month 7 and have not seen that flawless look or a major change. Should I continue using it? I use the Retin A cream.
Yes keep going. It takes a while for some people to see any change- 1 to 2 years.
I`ve heard that I should not apply tretinoin on my nose as it can be irritating. Have you experienced any benefits to applying it to your nose?

Wooow your explanation is on anothwr level am going to ourchase ut soon
@@durufrancisca991 Sadly no, I am about to give up on tretinoin. Coz earlier my face used to look dull and dark but now I see some brown patches around my cheeks.
