I’m one month into a talus fracture sustained while bouldering. One doc in Montreal told me this is a rock climbers injury! High impact into the bottom of your foot - makes sense. 10 screws and 2 plates later, I was searching for stories and came upon yours. Thank you! When I was 23 (I’m 46 now) I had back surgery that revealed that I have degenerative disc disease. I try not to think what I’m going to be experiencing in 20-30 years, but I try to be as active as possible without crossing the line of doing anything stupid. I’m glad you’re doing as well as you are. Thank God for good friends!

I broke my talus bone about five weeks ago, and I wanted to thank you for this sharing this story. My talus bone broke whilst I was scaling down from bouldering. Luckily, it didn’t shatter, there’s just one fairly clean break in the talus neck and another fracture about halfway through the same place as well. Three weeks ago, I got two pins put into my ankle and I now have an estimated 3-9 more weeks of non-weightbearing before I can even consider walking again. Listening to your story about the emotions and experiences you went through and are still going through truly made me feel heard and seen. I hope you’re doing better now.
I broke my talus March 7th. I had the x-fix erector set for the first 8 weeks. Now have 3 titanium screws in my talus and wearing the boot. I am currently trying to transition out of the boot and into walking with shoes. I hope your recovery goes well.

Man, this really hit home to me. When I was 11, I split my knee from one end to the other down to the kneecap. There was pain beyond pain in recovery but it was also the psychological toll it took on me. That being said, I was young and recovered almost fully over the summer. You had it way worse but I really do empathize with you. I’m glad to see your back making videos.
"Wisdom accelerator" : great way to put it, Dean. You made me think we are never going to injure ourselves at a good time or when we're ready. You can appreciate what you can do and that's what counts. Plus biking feels good and if that's not the biggest win then I don't know what is!

Im so glad i watched this. I just fracture my talus after falling from climbing. I had no idea what happened or what the future holds. I am scared about the limitations it could mean for me but this video showed me i am not alone and even with limitations you can be happy. Thank you for spreading your positive message ❤

We both love climbing and she had the same injury and just took off her X-fixer and dealing with lots of pain recently. I literally cried when i saw u have to take X-fixer for couple of weeks more. Looking for anything inspiring to say here, but it appears you’ve gained the gift of clarity. It is a treasure and a curse. Depending on your beliefs this has changed your trajectory or it was always going to be your path to tell your story to help others. I have only watched "Life With A Deadly Peanut Allergy" and am 5 minutes into this one but I can already tell you are very talented and am in love with your method of story telling. Dean, I'm so sorry about what you've been through. I am so glad you have wonderful friends that helped you. I have chronic pain that I've started to finally get under control and get bits of my life back, and I know that feeling of anger and jealousy seeing people doing things you just can't do anymore. I also have thought about how everyone ends up disabled at some point. Just hearing your voice though gave me a wave of emotion, I've missed your voice!

You are not wrong about that glimpse into aging. My profound injury was at age 9. The arthritis as a kid was awful as there was little that could be done in a pediatric case back then. Decades of re injuries, misdiagnosis, and bouts of PT later - I am still able to walk despite the naysayers. Arthritis always in the wings ready to lay me out not withstanding. You've got the right attitude. We have what we have and anything can come and go in an instant. Do what you can and try not to let the frustrations build into those soul sucking swamps. Thanks Dean

The emotional tax of going "back there" must have been a trip, particularly with the straightforward style -- without much of your trademark cinematography or editing magic. But take solace in the fact that YOU had multiple really close and loved Friends to aid in your recovery dude. It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL to watch and hear all about them special people who dealt with everything in their own lives, then add in Covid and all that right as the World was crumbling into pieces. You, Sir, have an extremely loving and Badass group of friends, Never forget that! I'm sure the time will come, life throws us all curve balls at the most inopportune times, so I'm sure you'll be able to help repay that debt to those loving friends. I bet I've gone back and watched every episode of Neighborhoods at least 4 times over lol. One one hand, the caution that doctors start out with seems unreasonable, but it also seems like it takes a lot from the patient to keep working towards their version of a complete recovery. I can tell you that our group of 50's and 60's burg folks went to Spain last year and hiked the 500 mile Camino del Norte. We all used Hoka boots and shoes and they were a game changer. No blisters, plenty of cushion and stability. I really think the extra cushion could be helpful to your comfort. I also imagine you know all about Hoka's but just in case! Love the 'charts and graphs' section btw!

Thank you for your 2 videos about the talus fracture. I broke mine in 3 parts in a boulder accident a couple of months ago. Your videos really helped me in the mental process. Seeing you having the same experience really calmed me down and felt i had someone i could relate too. I have rewatched them many times and soo went to the painfull process. I hope the best for you and your foot, ankle fixation sucks but maybe can be the solution!

I saw your friend hand you a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi," it caught my eye but I had to pause and find the exact frame to make sure I was seeing the title correctly haha. If you are interested in that line of books, I would recommend "The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios." It is a fascinating memoir of one man's spiritual journey, that took him from his native Greece, where he had spiritual encounters with the local Christian monastics, all the way to India, where he had spiritual encounters with Hindu gurus- even a man claiming to be the incarnation of Babaji. He refers to "Autobiography of a Yogi" in the memoir because many of the westerners he encountered in India were there after having read the book. Damn! I honestly can't even begin to imagine going through that and how frustrating it was and still is. You got some awesome friends though, and that's something that money can't buy. Kudos for sharing this journey, I went through a journey of dental work and shared it on fb with anyone that wanted to see it, and remove some of the stigma related to having to have major dental work done. sharing and making people aware of things, if for no other reason that they know they are not alone, and others have gone through it. Shattered my ankle 17 months ago still pretty messed up but one thing i have learned is that hot showers help the most letting the hot water hit it for atleast 10 minutes will loosen it up and feel better and let me do my exercises without pain
Dude, thank you for posting your story. I’m at the 12 month point of my talus fracture from falling off a ladder. My break was bad but way cleaner than yours, only three screws needed for my repair. It was definitely life changing, and watching your video was very therapeutic to see how you coped through your experience. Hope yours continues to heal and get stronger.
I don't think I've ever related so much to a story on the internet hah, April 2020 I broke my Talus while bouldering, 4 surgeries, 3 months in a cast and a year of physio later I was also diagnosed with arthritis. Got my first cortisone injection about 2 years into my injury and it rocked my world. I had the exact same experience that you describe, I was feeling joy and happiness in a profound way for the first time in a long time. Now, after 2 injections I'm starting to think of the damage the cortisone is doing to my joints and contemplating if I should get another shot... Feels like very similar stories although I went through the Swedish healthcare system... Do you have any thoughts on how many cortisone injections to have or potentially fusing the joints?
my jaw absolutely dropped when I saw maple wall... I too was inexperienced and went with a friend who was also inexperienced... I was climbing and fell at one point and the tether got stuck so I had no choice but to try to continue climbing up. I then slipped and cracked my head open. I was definitely at that small hospital outside of ohio oyle as well, probably Uniontown hospital? Anyways, thank you for sharing your story and holy cow what a mean fucking rock face
I have a question. My talus bone fracture was last year sept 14 2022. I got a plate and screws put in and I'm able to walk but my right foot is a bit pointed to the right with every step that I take. Did you experience your fractured foot to point outwards when you walked? also going up the stairs is still a struggle. I've never met anyone who has been through this so im just curious.

Thank you for your 2 videos about the talus fracture. I broke mine in 3 parts in a boulder accident a couple of months ago. Your videos really helped me in the mental process. Seeing you having the same experience really calmed me down and felt i had someone i could relate too. I have rewatched them many times and soo went to the painfull process.
I hope the best for you and your foot, ankle fixation sucks but maybe can be the solution!

Dean best of luck my man, I wrecked my ankle 5 years ago and didn't get surgery until just this year. Awful thing to happen, but I'm sure you will have a recovery - God has a plan for you, keep pushing dude!

I saw your friend hand you a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi," it caught my eye but I had to pause and find the exact frame to make sure I was seeing the title correctly haha. If you are interested in that line of books, I would recommend "The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios." It is a fascinating memoir of one man's spiritual journey, that took him from his native Greece, where he had spiritual encounters with the local Christian monastics, all the way to India, where he had spiritual encounters with Hindu gurus- even a man claiming to be the incarnation of Babaji. He refers to "Autobiography of a Yogi" in the memoir because many of the westerners he encountered in India were there after having read the book. Should you read the book, I hope it is profitable for you. May God bless you and grant you good health.

Kudos for sharing this journey, I went through a journey of dental work and shared it on fb with anyone that wanted to see it, and remove some of the stigma related to having to have major dental work done. sharing and making people aware of things, if for no other reason that they know they are not alone, and others have gone through it. Shattered my ankle 17 months ago still pretty messed up but one thing i have learned is that hot showers help the most letting the hot water hit it for atleast 10 minutes will loosen it up and feel better and let me do my exercises without pain

Dude, thank you for posting your story. I’m at the 12 month point of my talus fracture from falling off a ladder. My break was bad but way cleaner than yours, only three screws needed for my repair. It was definitely life changing, and watching your video was very therapeutic to see how you coped through your experience. Hope yours continues to heal and get stronger.
I don't think I've ever related so much to a story on the internet hah, April 2020 I broke my Talus while bouldering, 4 surgeries, 3 months in a cast and a year of physio later I was also diagnosed with arthritis. Got my first cortisone injection about 2 years into my injury and it rocked my world. I had the exact same experience that you describe, I was feeling joy and happiness in a profound way for the first time in a long time. Now, after 2 injections I'm starting to think of the damage the cortisone is doing to my joints and contemplating if I should get another shot...
Feels like very similar stories although I went through the Swedish healthcare system...
Do you have any thoughts on how many cortisone injections to have or potentially fusing the joints?

my jaw absolutely dropped when I saw maple wall... I too was inexperienced and went with a friend who was also inexperienced... I was climbing and fell at one point and the tether got stuck so I had no choice but to try to continue climbing up. I then slipped and cracked my head open. I was definitely at that small hospital outside of ohio oyle as well, probably Uniontown hospital? Anyways, thank you for sharing your story and holy cow what a mean fucking rock face
I broke mine and had a subtalar dislocation. No completely shattered but i messed it up pretty good. It was from bouldering

I have a question. My talus bone fracture was last year sept 14 2022. I got a plate and screws put in and I'm able to walk but my right foot is a bit pointed to the right with every step that I take. Did you experience your fractured foot to point outwards when you walked? also going up the stairs is still a struggle. I've never met anyone who has been through this so im just curious.
