Question communication cables in bottom of the board? What voltage do they run? Ref solar charge it will be a long time to recoup only 😃

I’m just imagining an armoured cable crossing the inside of the customers lounge internal corner walls where you’ve gone behind the gate frame! I’m sure it’s not but it was the first thought I had as you made the hole! A nice, neat install though. You seem to be doing more Zappi than Andersen.. is that price related do you think or just that Zappi are a better unit? Nice work 👍

Yeah, that crossed my mind 😂, a joiner I know was fitting a stair case, the neighbor came around and asked if he would look next door, when he went in every fixing had come through the wall, he thought there was a cavity, but it was single skin, he said they were like coat hooks 😂😂
Would say Zappi is among the best available.
@@stuartandrews4344 on the face of it, but there are a few questions, how do you test the built in RCD, does it have a test button, and how do you replace it if it goes fault, as it looked like there was only a circuit board in the charger.
@@acelectricalsecurity it self tests every time you use it to charge and also resets itself, afaik from seeing other videos more in depth on the zappi chargers

I work in entertainment lighting and we use a combined power + data cable for some of our fixtures. 2.5mm 3 core for the power, and nine 0.25mm cores for data. It's not armoured of course but it's stiff as anything and can be a bugger to work with.

Really like your videos, Jordan. Surprised the Zappi only has one terminal for CPC. The second ferrule looked uncomfortable with the first - almost pushing it out at 12:50.
It looked like there was a stud and nut next to the terminal, presumably that's intended to be used for earth bonding bits rather than the terminal?
@@alexacb63 That other terminal is if you use a TT earthing system, I think its so the Zappi doesn't switch the earth in the event of a trip.

As a heads-up, you want to ground the shield on one of the ends. Otherwise it is not going to help with interference, it might even make it worse.

The screen won't help with magnetic interference from the power cable, the twisting does that (assuming a balanced termination). The screen does, however help with electrostatic interference. And yes, the screen needs to be earthed to be effective.
Jorden, I notice that you have not grounded the drain wire on the data pair, for the screening to be effective it need to be earthed and one end only to provide screening and also to avoid earth loops.
Would have been nice to see a closeup of the finished install inside including CT clamping and a quick look at the app running the zappi, but understand not always possible. Exactly the install I am having only mine will be located inside my garage. Was there no myenergi hub required?

Hi love to see the pride you take in your work. Looking at a zappi to use with an MG ZS EV as we have 20kw of solar. The zappi seems like a good option as the MG has no timer for charging. Do you know if the Zappi and MG ZS EV play nicely together?
Well spotted that the Harvi only allows up to 60A monitoring. I never thought of doing a hybrid extension of the CT's, so I'm using 60m of SWA Cat 6 F/FTP, which is not cheap.
Hey Jordan, I am interested in becoming an EV Charger installer. I just got an MG ZS EV and very impressed with it.
I understand the requirements for earth rods and the technology within the Zappi's that reduce the likelyhood of car becoming live and someone getting a nasty shock should the incoming neutral conductor failing from the electricity provider. However, alot of these cars are supplied with "Granny Leads" ie 3KW chargers that plug into a standard 3pin socket (internal or external). Obviously this is a serious concern should a PEN fault occur.... Appreciate any comments you have on this type of charging solution....

Very professional job. I installed hundreds of EV stations in Holland but never ever have I put a cable on the outside of a wall. I would have loved to as it cost me a lot of time putting the cable in basements under the house or underneath the pavement. How long did this install take you ?
I can only imagine a job like that is 5-6hours work

Anthony charles I was assuming that Jordan had joined 2 pairs of the cat6 to a short 2 core lead and heat shrinked it.
Otherwise what would be the point in the heat shrink ?
@@acelectricalsecurity Two cores and a screen can run most serial interfaces - RS422, RS485 (which means DMX, Modbus..), CAN, LIN, Flexray, DALI, you could run DSL down it (yes, you can do your own point-to-point DSL links). Plenty of good for plenty of things, really.
You can get it with 'cat5' (bit vague, no datasheet), too. Always could, really, this style of cable isn't new, it's just never been common.
@@Cablesmith he said he did it to tidy it up, I am assuming as the cables primary design was for car chargers, the manufacturer would know they only need 2 cores and that's all they put in
@@Monkeh616 yes that's true, but if it were for a home office, they will most likely want data, that means a cat 5e, cat6 or on the job I am doing now a cat6A, so two core cable is no good
To me that corner hole looks like a potential for damp. You drilled level and the cable comes down and into the hole with no drip bend.

Very nice job Jordan, hope you did not get flashed by those cameras on the M11 of you came into London that way especially as you join the A406. When I lived in London 11 years ago those cameras were always flashing. Now in the USA the number of cameras like these are few and far between other than the major cities like Washington DC.

Jordan I don’t know if you have come across some car manufacturers limiting charging (car has its own inbuilt ground resistance monitor) because of ground resistance going above a certain level which can happen in warmer, and dryer conditions. I don’t know of that is something you had an issue with.
Thanks for the video; good stuff. EV-Ultra is available with one twisted pair or full 4-pair Cat5e. The Cat5e version could have been used here to avoid the Harvi. The Cat5e version is probably always going to be preferred with solar Zappi installations as there will be at least 2 CTs (one grid connection, one PV).

Never saw the installation of the Harvi so suspected that the ultra cable does away with it, but is that incorrect?
@@damiankimmins3880 EV-Ultra contains 1 x twisted pair data or 4 x twisted pair data (depending on type) alongside the mains cable. It is like running a data cable alongside the SWA but all within the armour so much neater. One twisted pair can be used per CT clamp to Zappi. So, as long as you can physically run all CT clamps (minimum one) to the EV-Ultra cable then, yes, you do not need the Harvi. The Harvi allows a wireless connection between a CT clamp and the Zappi and the Harvi does not need a power supply as it cleverly harvests power via the CT clamp (not sure how a loss of signal is distinguished from no power flow or whether that matters). The minimum one CT clamp is around the main incomer to the house so the Zappi can monitor/limit total house consumption should it ever go above whatever has been set e.g. 60A. More CT clamps can be used if you have solar generation, immersion heater solar diverter or battery storage, for example. I think the Zappi has a maximum of 3 wired CT clamp connections (probably more via Harvis, and I think each Harvi might accept 2 x CT clamps) but check any of that if you need to. I can get away with using a granny charger for now. Car is home most of the day, I have solar and do not use car much. No way would solar intelligence or low night rate (high standing charge) pay back a £1900 install from Artisan (excl OLEV) or even £1300 quote from cheapest local OLEV registered - prices will likely come down with time. I just switch on when sunny or when I need to. I consider the chances of a PEN disconnect to be minimal and have what is supposed to be TNS anyway; I usually turn off my main breaker when there is a power cut and occasionally look out the window to see if anybody else has power back on yet before flipping it back on. I regularly check how warm the plug is getting. Should do me.

@@damiankimmins3880 Mmm, wish it was that easy. Be sure you know what you are doing. OLEV grant only available for OLEV registered installers. Maximum demand calc needed. Check incoming fuse and incoming tail thickness for house. Loads of regs related to manner of install (e.g. height, wiring regs). Any new circuit or distribution board messing about needs testing, sign off by electrician or notifiable body, and the only sensible thing to do is a new circuit up stream of any RCDs in distribution board. It is all quite involved so be sure to do your homework.

Would it not be better to get SWA with more than 1 pair data, so you could hard wire both CTs? I can't imagine it would be much more expensive, and you wouldn't have to buy the wireless kit for the solar CT

Those are smart wee boxes, I had no idea they could monitor the current on the mains and ramp down if that was getting close to blowing the main fuse, cool feature! Not sure why the customer went with a cable attached version, it limits the kinds of cars you can charge, as some cars like the leaf will use the US style type 1 connector and you're stuffed if you (or the future owners) want to charge one of them instead of a European car.
Type 2 is the future, tethered cables are so much easier, assuming you use it daily they are much tidier, are always there, doesn't matter if they get rained on or filthy and I can keep my type 2 cable dry in the car for when I might need to use public chargers.
Neat. But is the EV cable available with two pairs of data? If so could've run both CTs back to the Zappi and done away with the Harvi altogether?
Yeah you can get it with a CAT5 inside instead which has 4 pairs
The events industry have similar cables for Power and DMX/ Balanced Audio. Not armoured of course but the same idea.

Yeh its the only place you will get them as Havells pulled out the UK market a few years ago.
Shouldn't the shield of the data cable be earthed on both sides for it to work? I'm sure it works fine like you did it as its only a CT but in data networks, especially when it comes to Cat. 7 10Gbps networks the cable shield is earthed at the patchpanel and at the device.
It's not really carrying heavy data - just a small voltage from the current transformer
Yes it should be earthed but generally only on one end as you can end up with ground loops if you join both ends

Interesting that you’ve crimped the main tails going into zappi. My installation at home didn’t used that, it’s just a stripped cable directly into terminals. Why , if I maybe ask? Should I look at getting mine redone?
You don't have to. Just looks a bit neater. The CCC of the tails remains exactly the same.
Yeah its just attention to detail really, some manufacturers require it though.
@@artisanelectrics Its not attention to detail its unneeded 99% of the time for class 2 conductors(7 strand) potentially its adding a point of failure and I'm yet to see a manufacturer request it on class 2.

Shame you didn’t put the charger in the middle of the wall, looks a bit unbalanced. Also is it ok to drill through the cavity, I’ve got a similar problem with a down pipe and the incoming gas. If there is no problem with this I will ask my installer to do the same.
Did you think of putting the large supply MCB for the car charging on the right of the CU as the left hand end means you have the largest load on end of the bus bars. Or have I missed something.
Doesn't matter where you put the loads as the whole busbar is rated for 100A
@@lewis94uk Yes I know, but it is good practice to put the higher loads at the closest end - it does not matter, just good practice.
Another great video and very neat install - But I don't understand the need for the EV Ultra cable, the Harvi allows 3 x CT's doesn't it? I'm not criticising, just asking the thinking behind the install ;-)

With increasing data requirements is there not an Ultra cable with more than one pair of data lines? You kept me wondering until near the end how you were going to CT the grid and solar. Was a Hub not required for the OLEV grant to meet the smart requirement.
Yeah you can get CAT5e version as well

So I noticed a lot of "C" breakers. Those valid in that install? With a much higher trip current than the "B"' breakers, I thought that they have specialized uses only and typically in residential 99% would be B's.
MCBs are hybrid devices, they have a thermal component which is designed to trip slowly on overloads and a magnetic component which is designed to trip very quickly on high current faults (i.e. short circuits).
The letters specify the characteristics of the magnetic trip. For a B breaker it requires a 5x overcurrent to gaurantee triggering of the magnetic trip, for a C breaker it requires a 10x overcurrent to gaurantee triggering of the magnetic trip.
Whether a "C" breaker is acceptable on a given circuit depends on whether the Zs value for the circuit is low enough to fast trip the breaker in the event of a short.
I have a question I've never fit a zappi charger but how do you do the 6monthly rcd test?

That’s the price I’m afraid! £7 is cheap! We pay £12 per meter for the 6mm SWA with CAT5 in
12:28 Those two CPC wires smashed into one terminal don't look neat at all to me. Why not taking a ring style wire end crimp connector for one of them and screw it underneath the nut at the right side of the terminal block? You also could have easily used a twin wire ferrule.
Earthing of SWA should always be done at the supply end, my only criticism
EV Ultra is available with a cat 5e instead of a twin data aswell, that way you could of clamped the solar and ommited the Harvi. 4mm EV Ultra is good for 45A Clipped direct aswell, looked like you may of been using 6mm. I'm not critising your install at all as it was very neat, just making you aware as it might save you cash and time in the future.... Keep up the good work Jordan 👍

Doesn’t that SWA cable go against the regs as you have no real segregation between the low voltage and the data other than a bit of tinfoil sheath . You basically have single insulated 230v cable next to data .

Bit of a stretch calling that ultra cable, it's just a single pair wire tagged on. The combined SWA/CAT5 is a more interesting concept. Doncaster do have excellent quality though, support british manufacturing.

Very different circumstances. In states I assume you mean America. The British standard is very stringent and in all honesty makes a joke of the American standards overall
@@jordankidd8789 but really aren't you concern that if they put stuff on the wall and they might rest it on the wire and destroy the wire? like i said before if they have a dog it might chew on the wire or kids playing around that area with low power wire.practically exposed? You just restricted that area for the home owner by not planning ure installation well and latterly cutting corners and trying to save a few bucks.. And here in the United States we have codes for a reason is call the National Electric Code, and that installation like I said b4 it would for no hell would pass installation...I mean that's just my observation and criticism hope you don't get offend it my friend...cheers.!
@@torodaman In the UK using armoured cable absolves you of many of the regulations related to other types of cables, the armour means that it will normally fail in a way that is safe to the user if exposed to damaging levels of stress, and of course the armour makes it a very tough cable. I suspect you are thinking about the problem from the perspective of typical USA homes, a typical British home is very different in its construction and running cables internal to the walls is rarely possible without significant work. @@torodaman Different countries have different regulations written by people who thought different things were important and/or were influenced by different special interest groups. The people required to work under those regulations then start to internalize them as if they were universal truths.
