A brickie told me you should always drill into the brickwork as it will stay solid forever whereas drilling into the mortar bed they crumble over time. That’s why older houses often need repointing. Love the videos and your work ethic btw. 👍
I'm 62 now and have always mounted to the bricks and never the Mortar, you can hang off the charging cable and it will never pull the charger off the wall even if you forget and drive away. A couple of good tugs on the charging lead and the charger will fall off Guaranteed.
Cracking job - my dad was an electrical engineer / electrician (ex MEB / Private - retired now). Showed him video and he was seriously impressed as was I. Good to see a true artisan at work !!
Interesting video! I'm an IT engineer but something about electrical works always gets me interested. Also fully approve of your neatness especially with the labelling 👍
These off cuts you think would come in handy but you keep them and they get in the way and other halves get annoyed by it 🤣👏🏻That’s my life right there mate 🤣
just wanted to say that i do love your videos, i was an electrician to the 17th edition but after the 18th came out i decided to retire, but looking at your videos, you are a man after my own heart, a bit OCD, like everything to be perfect, and the EV charger in Peckham, that consumer unit was horrible with all the insulation on cables cut so short. keep up the good work.
Congrats. I'm getting mine installed this Saturday. Your videos were very helpful to decide which charger to get and to get an idea what's needs to be done at my place. Thank you!
Love all the videos. I am taking my pre apprenticeship at the moment in Canada, starting apprenticeship in Feb. Great to see someone who takes pride in their work
A great job. Very nice charger and professional. Don't ever be tempted to DIY install this. Get an electician as you can see lots of testing needs to be done to check all is safe and working.
Hey, its been an absolute refreshing change to see a master at his trade! I wouldt love to get into electrical vehicle trade with the company I work for.....in my eyes you recommend this highly! I cant wait to do installs like you! 👍🏽
Great Video Jordan. I have a dental mirror in my kit so you check the busbar is in the mcb terminal clamp. I do loads of inspections and see it all the time where the busbar has missed the clamp and has caused overheating 👍
Watching from Australia having just bought a 3 SR+. In Aus, all Tesla's come with the Gen 2 HPWC so will be installing that (only single phase like you so will be 32A). Interestingly in Aus we are required to have an isolater/switch near any EV charger. Surprised the UK doesn't have this requirement given you do have switches on far lower powered wall points
I thought I was being helpful by leaving the spare busbar ready for the next guy ( same as here) but I got a telling off by my Elecsa inspector for leaving it in the board. He said it was a contaminant and shouldn’t be there and made me take it out during the inspection visit
Nice to see how you connected to the existing DB and the use of those wall SWA clips ( really good) which is all common to general ccts , But ... ..... What would be good is : To see more about the EV testing itself which is more relevant ( in compliance with BS7671: 2018 section 722 Amd 1 ) and how the ZAPI EV charging unit complies with the requirements in BS761 2018 sect 722 regarding connecting to TN systems - you mentioned this right at the end .. but rather glossed over it.
Really like those Super Clips. No more plastic clips for me. Only slight thing I would have done differently, is I would have hidden the change of direction of the SWA between the brick courses behind the soil pipe.
So I’m looking at getting an ev ,and home charger my question how do you go on when you don’t have an old style tap stopcock ? I have a Surestop switch stopcock under the sink in the cupboard with no visible bonding or no access behind the cupboard to check for bonding, I spoke to the council who believe the old tap stopcock would have been cut out when the surestop water switch was put in , thanks for any advice.
It's all good for people who have a drive way but living in London on a terrace road it's next to impossible to install one when parking spaces is limited.
Have you seen JW’s video on EV chargers? Also, could you give us a demo of the charger in use showing us what sort of current it pulls etc, perhaps even if you could turn the electric hob/oven on to demo how it ramps back to stay under the maximum demand. Excellent video otherwise, would it be possible to wire the charger into the outside box (main incomer) with just a small main? I would be more comfortable with that amount of load staying away from my house’s main CU.
i have a rolec charger, which was fitted about 2 years ago. It stopped working (out of guarantee) last week. When i contacted Rolec they diagnosed the fault according to my description of the problem (The contactor) and even though it was out of guarantee sent me a new contactor free of charge.
Great install. I am getting a pro in to do mine but as part of the landscaping work I am getting them to lay the cable as it is a long run. Is this normal armoured 3 core? Or do I need 3 or 5 core with data? I want to future proof as garden isnt coming up again!
Very helpful video, but one thing I may have missed is a clear statement of voltage - is it 220 or 240 volts? And, what is the charging rate in Amps or Watts? I live in Hong Kong and our standard supply is 220 volts and a geat many vehicles plug into a domestic standard 13 amp socket for EV charging. A friend's car uses 12.3 Amps for charging. The unknown is the next higher rate of charging. One neighbour with a Tesla uses 25 Amps for charging. The company meter is rated for 10 to 100 Anps AC. Three phase charging for EV's in my estate is a non starter because the local company - China Light and Power - would have to rewire the whole estate and build between 6 and 10 new sub stations to handle the load IF all the houses (5,024) wanted to charge EV's and run a home at the same time. Your comments would be helpful for background knowledge.
Do you carry out risk assessments and checklists prior to installing these? Also, with the PEN protection are you still required to ensure that everything within 10m that could possibly be earthed is either class 2 or separated from earth via an insulating section?
I'm researching what work I might have to have done to fit an EV charger. I have a 100amp fuse/switch. Doing a load calc 40 + (0.4x(32+32+16+6+6+6)) + 30.49 for the charger = 109A which exceeds the 100A. It looks like you have a greater demand on your CU. Is this only ok as your zappi has load management?
2:45 Funny that this house looks same as the last video where do you talk about the charger station and the video before where do you install cables. I know this washing machine some minutes later. Why YT talk me that this Video is 5 hours old?
Excellent. My next car will be electric, nothing as expensive as a Tesla. My question is as I don't know what car I will go for ,which unit do I put in ( I am renovating my house top to bottom now seems a good time to put a unit in ) needs to be a unit to cover a broad range of cars. Thank you in advance.
Do we need to seal the holes we drilled on the wall, or to seal the anchor screws for the charging station? I am just worried about moistures going into the wall and causing condensation in winter
Good video, thanks. What determines the 7kw as I have a garage at bottom of garden already with armoured cable but not sure if I can run straight off that.
I know this video is 2 years old but I wonder, here where I am 3fase power is rather standard, even if you are single fase you have a 3 fase lead comming into the meter. Is this not a thing in the UK? or is it only older home instalations that have a single lead 100 amp?
if you moved all the RH rcd ccts by one position to make room for the EV MCB - that would have changed all the existing cct numbers by "+1" ? - and then - presumably you moved all the neutral and CPC connections on the relevant busbars by +1 also to match the new cct numbering ?
Looks like your van could do with some better security, and maybe some locking pillars at the front of the property and yes that gate seriously needs replacing.
Great video, thanks. I'm a Model 3 owner and in the process of moving to be able to install a charger. You mention that you didn't want to see so much cable on the outside, which looks great, but was there any technical reason you couldn't continue to the meter box and put your cable in through the wall using whatever hole is already there for the existing cables? Thanks
I think the government made a mistake with the whole EV market. From the start they should have said when you have a charge point installed in your home it needs a separate meter, that way they can charge vat at 20% and calculate fuel duty.
My understanding of the Zappi version 1 is that your not allowed to use it on PME and it does not provide disconnection of the supply in case of DC Fault current above 6ma. 18th Edition Regulation 722.531.2.101
im getting a vw id3 and will need a 7kw charger. I want to lay the cable through the loft before the builders convert the upstairs to rooms. It will be a 20mtr run total inside and external. Do I need 6mm armoured cable or 10mm. Thanks
Dirty Secret: Manufacturing Them Leaves Massive Carbon Footprint. Once in operation, electric cars certainly reduce your carbon footprint, but making the lithium-ion batteries could emit 74% more CO2 than for conventional cars.
The cable run around the bit of wall that sticks out, wasnt as neat as I would of liked. But then what alternatives was there anyone ?.Otherwise very neat and professional.
Earth bonding by the boiler. Further than 600 mm from the gas meter outlet. I'd really like your input on this one as it seems to be quite a matter where electricians and gas engineers disagree on.
Hi my mate got one installed and told me that all they did is, run the power to the white box outdoor where the meter sits instead of the fuse box. So just wondering if that is possible and how come you did not do the same ? maybe you did not have space
The Zappi is a very nice bit of kit and if you have a Solar PV installation it can do some very clever things. It’s worth checking out the fully charged channel, Robert Llewellyn’s has a recent video of his home demonstrating the Tesla power wall and Zappi setup.
great video like the rest ..i am new electrician. Just wondering how it was when contact DNO about installation at factory and the 13.8 kva M.D any views on that would great
Hi Jordan, Looking at getting an EV charger installed at my house. Im with Octopus, Would you still recommend the zappi as an EV charger or is there any others that you would favour now? How has your experience been with the zappi?
I know it's not the main subject of the video, but when you touched on Nest products... would not recommend the Nest smoke detectors. Recently had a kitchen extension built, had to install a heat detector that can also talk to the other detectors in the property. Nest offer no Heat detector, ended up switching everything to Fireangel who offer similar smart features.
what would the 6 amp circuits be used for and what size wire is used for 6 amp than 16 amp circuits what size wire and what would be used for than what would 20 amp circuits be used for and what size is the wire in the us we use 14 gage wire 15 amps 12 gage wire 20 amps 10 gage wire 30 amps black live white neutral green or bare wire ground gage is the American wire gage
A good quality long drill bit for concrete and bricks, with a good drill / hammer, saves SO much time. Something that can take an hour with a shitty tools, can take 1-2 minutes with proper drill bit and drill. Love my long SDS plus drills. But the longest I own is 45cm. I guess having a longer one could be handy, but I am not a professional electrician :)
What’s to stop someone from having a bog standard 32amp socket installed, and use the cable that comes with the car or buy another charging cable (like the one from Ohme)... surely that wouldn’t need an Earth rod, and would be cheaper than buying a home charger unit. Maybe not a perfect solution...
The car wouldn't charge at 32amps....as you would only get a limited charge as the car wants to see the signal to say fast charge so you would just get a slow charge
@@artisanelectrics I was about to say the same thing (Rod required) been off the tools for many years now (desk jockey) when I did my car charging coarse that's all they went on about. If you have TT system then your ok not to install rod otherwise install Rod and don't connect the PME from the main board to the charger. My coarse was YEARS ago and i've not installed one in a long while and not installed one with PEN fault detection. Very neat job by the way. On a side note when I used to install SWA glands I used to tighten down the nut and half of the gland onto the board then tighten down the rest of the gland on to it. I found if far easier and you could get them really tight if you can picture what i mean.
Hi Jordan love the videos and quality installations. Just have one comment. I am not a qualified electrician so shoot me down with the regs, but as Joe Bloggs is it wise to have a washing machine waste so close to a main consumer unit? Looking forward to seeing the model 3 . Great choice. Wish I had trained as an sparky I'm stuck with a 24Kw leaf. (Still a great car) Regards Keith.
Something I don’t quite understand here . I tend to work with more industrial electrical systems . I was understanding that fixed equipment should have a local means of isolation now I can see that in the rolec as they have the rcd that can be switched off. But how is that covered in the zappi also reading the patent that zappi have for there system I don’t see how there system complied with the regulation as it appears it is still possible for the earth to be at a voltage > 70v rms. and the circuit will only trip when some one actually touches the car and gets a shock . Then the 30 ma ct will shut of all power and earth . But 30 ma is still a nasty shock. Or am I missing something here ?

A brickie told me you should always drill into the brickwork as it will stay solid forever whereas drilling into the mortar bed they crumble over time. That’s why older houses often need repointing. Love the videos and your work ethic btw. 👍
Thanks for the tip! I think I’ve done too much work in old listed buildings where you’re not allowed to drill the bricks 😂
I'm 62 now and have always mounted to the bricks and never the Mortar, you can hang off the charging cable and it will never pull the charger off the wall even if you forget and drive away.

The tune the Zappi made @30:49 is the victory tune in final fantasy 7.
Congrats. I'm getting mine installed this Saturday. Your videos were very helpful to decide which charger to get and to get an idea what's needs to be done at my place. Thank you!
Awesome hope the install goes well! What car are you getting??
Pleeease! Move the drain pipe an inch or two!
If it overflows it'll be interesting!
It’s incredible that it’s legal to use bus bars like that in UK. In DK it has to be isolated wires
Love all the videos. I am taking my pre apprenticeship at the moment in Canada, starting apprenticeship in Feb.
Great to see someone who takes pride in their work
Thnks!
Hi Jordan, this is Dave. We are loving your videos
Yes the Joy's of off cuts, they make it untidy & the day after you get rid of it you get a job where it would be handy!!
Totally!
Water drainage pipe that close to the breaker unit would be a major problem if you had a blockage or waste problem
You should relocate it.
I hope you shifted all your neutrals and CPC’s over to suit the new consumer unit layout ... great vid 🇬🇧✊🏻
A great job. Very nice charger and professional. Don't ever be tempted to DIY install this. Get an electician as you can see lots of testing needs to be done to check all is safe and working.
Yes absolutely! Thanks for the comment.

Yeah me too I forgot to mention that it’s a great little tool!
I had a funny feeling that was your property, interesting video as usual.
Yes it would be great to see some vlogs on your new Tesla.
Thanks! Tesla video to come soon.
Great Stuff 👍
You have great pride in your workmanship even on your own property. Good video mate 👍
Thanks
Subbed because you have bought a Tesla and sharing your Knowledge about it all. Thanks
Final fantasy victory fanfare tune when you first connect the faceplate 😁

10:41 good job on the angles, better than Nick Bundy 😜😜😜
Thanks!
30:50...the ff7 victory tone is the one!!!!
Glad I'm not the only one to spot that. Whoever designed it to do that is a genius.
I thought I was being helpful by leaving the spare busbar ready for the next guy ( same as here) but I got a telling off by my Elecsa inspector for leaving it in the board. He said it was a contaminant and shouldn’t be there and made me take it out during the inspection visit
Wow interesting thanks
Hi I just wondered do you have to connect a home charger to your consumer unit or can all the wiring be done just in your outside meter box.
I thought you made a really smart job of installing that, the linian clips look very useful.
Thanks! 👍
Nice to see how you connected to the existing DB and the use of those wall SWA clips ( really good) which is all common to general ccts , But ...

HI, How did you connect the Zappi to your home network to make it a Smart EV Charger, or did you not want to do this?

Looks great! Sorry to inform you that is NOT a charger. It is a 'smart' extension cord. The charger (battery charger) is in the car.
Do you carry out risk assessments and checklists prior to installing these? Also, with the PEN protection are you still required to ensure that everything within 10m that could possibly be earthed is either class 2 or separated from earth via an insulating section?
Nice video. I can't tell you much I like to see work done well and neatly, unlike most of what I see here where I live!
Great video, thank you, how will you stop someone else using your charger when you are not home .? , can it be locked ?
I'm researching what work I might have to have done to fit an EV charger. I have a 100amp fuse/switch. Very neat install. The only I don't like is how for out the charging connection sticks out. I'll have think how to make one vandal / thief proof!
Great video Jordan. Thanks for featuring the LINIAN SuperClips. Very neat & tidy install!
Thanks. You’re welcome!
Do we need to seal the holes we drilled on the wall, or to seal the anchor screws for the charging station? I am just worried about moistures going into the wall and causing condensation in winter
What size armoured cable did you use for this? Brilliant video
Great install thanks for your input on the manufacturer of EV charger. Very thorough excellent..
Good video, thanks. What determines the 7kw as I have a garage at bottom of garden already with armoured cable but not sure if I can run straight off that.

60cm deep is a recommendation if likely to be damaged. In that situation it would be fine 👍
Thanks
I was going to look that up as was sure it was to do with damage, thinking armoured which you are using anyway as a starter alternative?
522.8.10 doesn't mention a depth. Just 'sufficient depth'. I love the book of grey areas 🤣
I don't like that washing machine exhaust hose right on top of a consumer unit is that spec? Could you not cut that pipe to be lower down?
Did you predrill for clipping, it was fastforward speed so i could not see what you used. ?
Washing machine discharge pipe right next to consumer unit???? Water and electrics???
if you moved all the RH rcd ccts by one position to make room for the EV MCB - that would have changed all the existing cct numbers by "+1" ? - and then - presumably you moved all the neutral and CPC connections on the relevant busbars by +1 also to match the new cct numbering ?
Could you explain again why the car charger is not put on the RCD? Does it have it's own RCD protection?
Lovely job once again Jordan. Congratulations on your anniversary too buddy
Thank you so much 👍
Looks like your van could do with some better security, and maybe some locking pillars at the front of the property and yes that gate seriously needs replacing.
Thanks
witch type of cable and how many core we can use jordan
Let us know how you get on with the Model 3. Post some vids!
Thanks i'm loving it so far!
I think the government made a mistake with the whole EV market. From the start they should have said when you have a charge point installed in your home it needs a separate meter, that way they can charge vat at 20% and calculate fuel duty.
There's nothing to stop you from charging via the granny lead (supplied with most EV's) plugged into a 13A socket though.
My understanding of the Zappi version 1 is that your not allowed to use it on PME and it does not provide disconnection of the supply in case of DC Fault current above 6ma. 18th Edition Regulation 722.531.2.101
I don’t know anything about Zappi V1 to be honest they don’t make them any more
Need to sort that gate out as your next job lol ... good video
im getting a vw id3 and will need a 7kw charger. I want to lay the cable through the loft before the builders convert the upstairs to rooms. It will be a 20mtr run total inside and external. Do I need 6mm armoured cable or 10mm. Thanks

Really enjoyed the install, great job. Now we need the tour of the new car 😜 Stay safe!
Coming soon!
Hi what type of cable did you used to connect the Zappi charger? What is the size? In mm2
You need an adjustable spanner and/or the Knipex Adjustable Pliers Wrench for use on gland nuts👌
Thanks I will look into it.

Thanks I love that Channel
On the wireless unit for the load monitoring, does it need pairing again in case say of a power cut? Thanks.
nope it connects back up when powered
great video like the rest ..i am new electrician.
Yes best quality ever video and work man you are good.
Neat job and love the linen clips. Much neater than cleats.
Odd -been speaking to myenergi who insist you need one of their hubs, not just a harvi
The hub is if you’re wanting the app and to claim the OLEV grant 💚
Jordan awesome job with a pros finish and a great Ad for the Zappi
Thanks a lot!
Great videos 👍, but not a good place for the washing m/c waste pipe as well, speaking as a retired appliance engineer, keep safe, from Coventry 🇬🇧.

How long was it before you tripped over the charging cable when trying to sneak in through the back door when bladdered coming back from the pub?
What’s to stop someone from having a bog standard 32amp socket installed, and use the cable that comes with the car or buy another charging cable (like the one from Ohme)... surely that wouldn’t need an Earth rod, and would be cheaper than buying a home charger unit. Maybe not a perfect solution...
Little or nothing. But it wouldn't comply with BS7671 and would be potentially dangerous.
The car wouldn't charge at 32amps....as you would only get a limited charge as the car wants to see the signal to say fast charge so you would just get a slow charge
Good sales pitch, sound electrics. Thanks. Very informative.
Have you made one on the 'Harvi' device? Sounds useful.
Why only single Phase why not use all # phases ? or arnt houses in the UK wired in with 3 Phases ?
In the UK most houses only have a single phase supply

I had to replay that part three times to be sure, “surely, it can’t be...” :)
What was that red tool you used to strip down the sea rather then using a knife
Knipex Ergostrip Cable Stripping Tool
I made a review about it on @tools4sparks
Haven’t you got any cw glands? I thought a car charges was meant to be on a earth rod?
This one doesn’t need an earth rod as it has built in PEN fault detection device
Good video. Thanks.. Plenty of detail for apprentices please
Nice job but why a 40 amp MCB ? I thought the Zappi required a 32 amp MCB.
Hi I have a separate electric supply to my garage with 5 other garages I believe it’s a 60 amp supply could I have a ev charge point installed
Thanks! I would never install a washing machine that close to the consumer unit but it’s not my own house! 👍 glad you like the videos!
