These myenergi systems only only work on a grid connected system where they can measure imports/exports from the grid they don't work with off-grid systems where it is hard to determine available PV power on a dynamic basis. I'm running my entire system off-grid as a TT with a basic Rolec charger with selectable charge rates and a heat-pump/300l water tank. Power comes from 6KW solar array and a 100A/48V charge controller feeding 10KWH LiFePO4 and 5KW inverter. Control is done the hard way - I looks at the sky and charge state then set the car charger accordingly, it all works! By the way, that water tank you are adding the Eddi to would benefit from the pipes insulating and an additional insulating jacket on top of the existing insulation.
Was going off-grid just a wish or was there a need? Would love to see the stats on your system and how you get on over winter! Certainly something I'd like to do in the future, but being a city dweller at the moment, not quite possible!
We have a 5kW solar system, a Tesla powerwall and the Myenergi Zappi and Eddi systems and despite being 25Km from Aberdeen, run our house most of the year on solar. or off peak electricity. Just had an Air Scource Heat Pump system put in to replace our LPG boiler so now are 100% on electricity apart from our wood burner. The Myenergi systems are not cheap, but you pay for what you get.
Easy to understand - so happy! I'm just starting to look at solar, batteries, and chargers and it's a bit of a mystery so this was useful. Assume being in Cheshire means you don't get up here ....
I always found those top mounted immersions blow the thermostat cutouts in my rentals due to rising heat. Had to source some without cutouts. (Flats are all ground floor, so no danger involved.)

Is is poss to install a 3Phase Zappi and initially connect it up to a Single phase power supply (with cable for 3Ph) - so that in the future event of having an upgrade to 3ph - with the reconfigure of the power cable / CT's - the full potential of a 3Ph Zappi can be achieved.

Not sure if you've seen it, but D-line make a bit of 16x8 trunking with a curved profile that's perfect for single data cables (eg I use it for feeds to wireless access points) - I find it's less intrusive and more visually appealing than the standard square edged stuff...
Hi, am liking your videos - couple of questions / comments as sometimes its hard to get a clear perspective from the video. When you mounted the Zappi in the garage, as you like to do a neat job, would it have looked ok if it was a little higher as it would have hidden two of the old holes from the previous charger. Its the kind of thing that would bug me and would have masked some of the old holes for a neater job. The other thing I was wondering about, the cable for the immersion heater, could that have not gone up and over instead of being on the floor? Would it not be more susceptible to damage being run along the floor and generally look less tidy (or did it go under the boards?). That resident was nuts for wanting that diagonal wall drilling through the wall as well. Nice idea on the conduit when drilling though! .
Love how your promoting new ideas. We definitely need to consider this as an option because some commercial premises especially don't have the capacity for chargers. I do work for a well known car retailer and they are experiencing such problems

love your videos, learning new stuff every time , but i just wanted to comment on the intro, for the sunny weather , when you live in a country that is sunny and boiling hot 8-9 months a year you start to hate living and working in the heat.. its very unconfutable working in such extreme temperatures.
Problem with wireless devices like the Eddi and solar I boost is they don’t respond quickly enough as solar output changes. You can find the immersion pulling from the grid for a minute or two as a cloud blocks the solar. I’ve installed and used a few of these on my own place for many years. My favourite now is the hardwired solic200 which responds instantly and modulates output to the immersion by chopping the sine wave.
Could quite tell from the video angles, but were there grommets on the supply cables feeding the EV charger DB? Looked like cables had just been pushed through drilled holes in the plastic enclosure...
How come you didn’t put rcd protection on that cable feeding the charger? If it was a swa cable or in a earthed metallic conduit you could have a mcb but not NYY
Question. I have a sub board in the garage with 16mm swa cable 600/1000v from main board. Is this suitable to feed the Zappi from the sub board ? Will need to check breakers etc but want to be sure cable is ok.

I'm looking to convert my gas-fired Zombi to electricity, and would like to use something like the Eddi to divert any excess from my Solar PV into an immersion tank. Can I ask, why did you need to add a CT directly to the Solar connection..? Wouldn't having a CT on the DNO feed be enough to inform the Eddi when the site was in surplus and exporting..?
Is there a particular reason why you ran the power feed to the water heater controller down instead of up and over the door frame? Seems that above the door frame would be safer in the future as there would be less chance of damaging it especially if the water tank needed to be changed out.

I bought the knipex ergo tool but for some cables stripping can result in sheathing lodged between the blade and housing making it less functional over time. They need to make a better model for USA purposes.
Great vlogs and very informative for none electricians. On the subject of car charging and chargers, watching your vlogs on the subject, so much has changed in such a short time re quality and fittings, do you think that in another two or three years time, upgrades will have to be made again to charging systems? On the Eddie, what happens with the surplus electricity from the solar side, when the water is hot and the grid is at capacity and shutting down some generators and the house also doesn't need it? I know that doesn't happen often but it has happened, summer usually.

Looking at the tech specs for the EDDI the Amps rating would be too low so it looks like it would require a relay as the Tub is rated to pull 32Amp on full. Thanks

Hi sir could you not have gone out the base of the outside box . Run up the wall and back entry into the dis board . Avoiding any need to see trunking on the inside . But of course it would have been a lot more work . And as they say time is money 😃 . I don’t think it would contravene any regulation , because it would be just the same as say up grading a 6mm bonding cable to 10 mm . Best wishes and kind regards Mike in the U.K.
Type 2 AC is---as far as I know---limited to 32 amps per phase. If you're looking far into the future you could install a 5-core, so if you ever get 3-phase you'd be ready. And the actual size depends on amps and the length of the run. We don't know the latter, so no nice ready-to-use answer here.
It would depend on the length of cable run . As this is for a device that is used for many hours at full load I would over size the cable in all instances to keep volt drop down to a minimum and charger effic. High If you install cable to just meet the regulations you can easy loose 150 w by the time it gets to the car this over a lifetime of use will cost well more that the extra cost of the cable
@@hotrex7779 It still makes a difference if it's a 3 metre run through a wall or a 73 metre run to the garage at the other end of the property. (btw, this example, for a 3-phase 32A installation, is just crossing the boundary between 6 an 10 mm2 as minimum required. And doing the math gives 0.4 mm2 vs 10.4 mm2, so doing the first in 6 mm2 would be more than fine, whereas the second could gain from a a thicker cable for less losses.)
HenryLoenwind Yes. It will make a difference what ever the run length But the loss down a 3 mt run of 6mm would not be too great. As a comparison to the loss down a 50mt run of 6mm . I use a 10mt lead and that costs me about 60 Odd watts. But to help it out the run from my consumer unit is now 10mm

I have one of those excess solar water heaters. problem with them is, if you have a gas boiler you're paying 5-6 times less per kwh for energy compared with electricity - it's not the best use of spare electricity to heat water - EV/home battery/appliances is a better use.

Why are there so many meter boxes, where the main fuse is not fixed to the backboard like the meter? It looks like it is just thrown in there, hanging on the leads that go to the meter ... why is it like this?🤓

Great video but I don't quite understand the need (not a sparky...!). Why do the immersion heaters need a specific device to divert power into them, if they are connected to the home why don't they just use electricity just like any other appliance?!
I was wondering if it was OK to run an EV charger at 32A off of a 32A MCB, I've got my charger set down at 24A as I was concerned about it tripping the 32A MCB that was installed on the circuit (I fitted the charger a few years after the Spark installed the circuit)
I've got a Solar iBoost to heat my hot water tank from a 4kW set of solar panels. It only manages to completely heat the tank during the 6 summer months and only on sunny days. Still an excellent device. In 6 years it has put over 7,500 kWh of free electricity into the hot tank. If it's not using the iBoost it uses gas so it has saved me about 7500 kWh of gas which at current prices (3p per kWh) is worth about £225. And still many years to go so should end up saving about £1000 from my bills. I think I paid about £200 for the device including fitting so will be about £800 total profit from it. I cannot see the point in investing in a solar car charger, unless you have a lot more than a 4kW solar system. As most of the time the sun is shining you will be at work so unable to use the free solar power.
I agree... We have a 6.6KW array and we are looking at upping it to 10KW.. A solar EV charging system is not going to work unless you have a small battery in your EV and switch everything off in the house when it's sunny...
@@G-Cam1 My iBoost seems to put about half the electricity generated from the solar panels into the hot tank. Sometimes the tank gets "HOT" so stops taking charge. Also, on the iBoost I think to allows a margin of about 400W excess that it won't take, catering for any power surges from other electrical appliances, more modern devices will probably have a lower excess and more responsive feedback so use more free electricity with less of a margin. If you get a 10kW solar bank then that should manage to charge the car battery a bit before you even leave for work and of course over the weekend it should build up a lot. I wish I'd gone for a larger solar array but at the time it was difficult to arrange that much with the electricity company and getting the generation tariffs. I've never switched anything off when the sun is shining to get electricity into the hot tank but if you have a battery that will give electricity when the sun has gone down to add to a 10kW solar bank then you will probably have nearly zero electricity bills in your house.
@@caparn100 I do have a Powerwall2 which helps. But we are also have 2 EVs and run a business from the house... We are big users of Electricity.. around 14500kWh per year? We also, unfortunately heat the house with oil. However I'm working on getting an ASHP system installed in the next month... Bad timing as we head for the reduced daylight hours, but I guess that is always going to be the case with Solar PV and an ASHP... There is a jarring incompatible nature that when PV production drops off ASHP demand increases! I'm looking for a small wind turbine to suppliant the system a little however finding one that I can afford that actually works is slightly difficult... It's all a balance with green energy... Buy at least we are doing something to reduce emissions and so are many folk on here👍 It literally is the quiet Revolution....
So 4 kW solar gave you 10amps, on 32 amp charge. If you do a typical 9 to 5 & start charging lucky if your getting 2 amp of sunshine. So now we are looking at storage batteries. Costing £4,000 every 4 years. Think we are stuck with diesel for a few more years.
This problem is just one of many reasons why we must retain hydrocarbon alternatives for a long time. The full annual world supply of lithium is already being used so alternative battery technology is already urgently needed. However that is neither cheap nor efficient so long term use of storage will undoubtedly cost more than hydrocarbon energy for a few decades yet.
Saw what.. 4kW solar will roughly deliver (as I understand) 6-10kWh per day in the UK. A full electric vehicle battery is 40-80kWh by comparison and a Tesla Powerwall 13kWh (both last a lot longer than 4yrs btw)
@@corrigenda70 Need the Wind Farms to split water into Hydrogen and Ogygen then push the Hydrogen in to the Natural Gas networks and Liquify if for ICE use. Oxygen in to the NHS.

One big problem with 'inteligent' systems is that they don't have weather forcasts built in. I prefer to have manual cotrol sending excess solar in the summer to water though the 'water solar panels' are also giving me too much on a sunny day. In the Uk there will always be some summer days with too much solar and winter between Nov and Feb too little. For me, in winter what solar there is, is better sent to the battery or car whilst the wood stove is heating the water and house.
@@edc1569 It could be used by any other Electrical equipment/appliances in the house. My Router is on 24/7 so will consume power - as will the Radio / TV / Printer / Fridge / Pond pump etc.....
So these people are solely reliant on solar to heat their hot water..? What happens if there isn't enough (sometimes) as I would fair guess knowing Britain as I do.
Obviously it's not your area, but do you know why he was sticking with such an old water tank? The newer insulated cylinders have far greater energy retention, such that they actually make airing cupboards relatively cool, they're so well insulated they can even be put into uninsulated roof spaces.

My understanding is, that there needs to be proof that your protective device is safe to use with your DB (keeping the IP rating of the box valid for example). If they are the same brand, it is assumed that that is the case (especially if they come pre-mounted) but it cannot be assumed for all brands. Some MCBs might leave a gap in the front cover because they don't fit perfectly, or they might prevent you from closing the cover. If the manufacturer supplies a certificate that it is ok to use them, then they assume liabilty. Disclaimer: I'm not an electrician.
@@holladiewal6812 Yes, it is obvious that you can't install parts that does not fit. I know there is weird bottom busbar solutions in UK and those might be manufacturer specific but in case on this video, there is standard DIN rail mount witch means that you can install any device that is made for DIN standard and it will fit. This is the reason why the standard exists.
While I get the point, this isn't the design of an aircraft, as competent professional you should be able to make a decision, in the commercial world people are always mixing different components with different enclosures, you can't tear a building apart because the original manufacturer of that enclosure isn't about anymore.
@@peto22 Just because the breakers fit the DIN rail - it does'nt necessarily follow that the CU front cover will fit properly over the front of the MCBs/RCBO's/Main Switch.

BP Chargemaster is the largest EV Charging company in the UK and there is nothing wrong with the product if used correctly. You can't slate and compare an 5 year old product to a brand new one. Your videos used to be entertaining but now your getting to big for your boots when it comes to EV's. Just because you passed the EV charging course, it doesn't make you a specialist.
Largest doesn't necessarily make them better. At least he's sharing his knowledge and having passed the EV course - it kinda does make him a sort of specialist.
Just as a note, for those who watch these vidoes on a TV or Streaming Media box, there is no option to subscribe on most systems the way the apps work. That is partly why 70 odd percent don't subscribe. :) Loving the videos, but really, this is not new technology. It's been around for decades in different forms and making it sound like new technology just feels like click bait, which I don't ever expect from someone with your integrity. The danger is in scalding your tenants to death. What's ground floor got to do with it?

I would say the Eddi is pretty instant and does NOT in my experience draw from the grid unless you get your programming wrong!

Immersion heaters are a pain in the arsenal to change. Often they can be stuck in, but thankfully it is more likely to be the thermostat.

On the Eddie, what happens with the surplus electricity from the solar side, when the water is hot and the grid is at capacity and shutting down some generators and the house also doesn't need it? I know that doesn't happen often but it has happened, summer usually.

Thanks great info as usual. I'm just going the EV and solar route and wondering if it would be possible to use the EDDI device to heat a Hot Tub instead of or as well as hot water. Looking at the tech specs for the EDDI the Amps rating would be too low so it looks like it would require a relay as the Tub is rated to pull 32Amp on full. Thanks

Hi sir could you not have gone out the base of the outside box . Run up the wall and back entry into the dis board . Avoiding any need to see trunking on the inside . But of course it would have been a lot more work . And as they say time is money 😃 . I don’t think it would contravene any regulation , because it would be just the same as say up grading a 6mm bonding cable to 10 mm . Best wishes and kind regards Mike in the U.K.

Type 2 AC is---as far as I know---limited to 32 amps per phase. If you're looking far into the future you could install a 5-core, so if you ever get 3-phase you'd be ready.
And the actual size depends on amps and the length of the run. We don't know the latter, so no nice ready-to-use answer here.
It would depend on the length of cable run . As this is for a device that is used for many hours at full load I would over size the cable in all instances to keep volt drop down to a minimum and charger effic. High
If you install cable to just meet the regulations you can easy loose 150 w by the time it gets to the car this over a lifetime of use will cost well more that the extra cost of the cable
@@hotrex7779 It still makes a difference if it's a 3 metre run through a wall or a 73 metre run to the garage at the other end of the property. (btw, this example, for a 3-phase 32A installation, is just crossing the boundary between 6 an 10 mm2 as minimum required. And doing the math gives 0.4 mm2 vs 10.4 mm2, so doing the first in 6 mm2 would be more than fine, whereas the second could gain from a a thicker cable for less losses.)

But the loss down a 3 mt run of 6mm would not be too great. As a comparison to the loss down a 50mt run of 6mm . I use a 10mt lead and that costs me about 60 Odd watts.
But to help it out the run from my consumer unit is now 10mm

I have one of those excess solar water heaters. problem with them is, if you have a gas boiler you're paying 5-6 times less per kwh for energy compared with electricity - it's not the best use of spare electricity to heat water - EV/home battery/appliances is a better use.
Why joint the cable with connectors? Why not just strip the cable long enough to go through the box and into charger??

Why are there so many meter boxes, where the main fuse is not fixed to the backboard like the meter? It looks like it is just thrown in there, hanging on the leads that go to the meter ... why is it like this?🤓

I was wondering if it was OK to run an EV charger at 32A off of a 32A MCB, I've got my charger set down at 24A as I was concerned about it tripping the 32A MCB that was installed on the circuit (I fitted the charger a few years after the Spark installed the circuit)

I've got a Solar iBoost to heat my hot water tank from a 4kW set of solar panels. It only manages to completely heat the tank during the 6 summer months and only on sunny days. Still an excellent device. In 6 years it has put over 7,500 kWh of free electricity into the hot tank. If it's not using the iBoost it uses gas so it has saved me about 7500 kWh of gas which at current prices (3p per kWh) is worth about £225. And still many years to go so should end up saving about £1000 from my bills. I think I paid about £200 for the device including fitting so will be about £800 total profit from it.
I cannot see the point in investing in a solar car charger, unless you have a lot more than a 4kW solar system. As most of the time the sun is shining you will be at work so unable to use the free solar power.

I agree... We have a 6.6KW array and we are looking at upping it to 10KW..
A solar EV charging system is not going to work unless you have a small battery in your EV and switch everything off in the house when it's sunny...
@@G-Cam1 My iBoost seems to put about half the electricity generated from the solar panels into the hot tank. Sometimes the tank gets "HOT" so stops taking charge. Also, on the iBoost I think to allows a margin of about 400W excess that it won't take, catering for any power surges from other electrical appliances, more modern devices will probably have a lower excess and more responsive feedback so use more free electricity with less of a margin.
If you get a 10kW solar bank then that should manage to charge the car battery a bit before you even leave for work and of course over the weekend it should build up a lot. I wish I'd gone for a larger solar array but at the time it was difficult to arrange that much with the electricity company and getting the generation tariffs. I've never switched anything off when the sun is shining to get electricity into the hot tank but if you have a battery that will give electricity when the sun has gone down to add to a 10kW solar bank then you will probably have nearly zero electricity bills in your house.

We also, unfortunately heat the house with oil. However I'm working on getting an ASHP system installed in the next month... Bad timing as we head for the reduced daylight hours, but I guess that is always going to be the case with Solar PV and an ASHP... There is a jarring incompatible nature that when PV production drops off ASHP demand increases!
I'm looking for a small wind turbine to suppliant the system a little however finding one that I can afford that actually works is slightly difficult...

Why has it saved you 7500 kwh of gas ? It is not a direct comparison .
So 4 kW solar gave you 10amps, on 32 amp charge. If you do a typical 9 to 5 & start charging lucky if your getting 2 amp of sunshine. So now we are looking at storage batteries. Costing £4,000 every 4 years. Think we are stuck with diesel for a few more years.
This problem is just one of many reasons why we must retain hydrocarbon alternatives for a long time. The full annual world supply of lithium is already being used so alternative battery technology is already urgently needed. However that is neither cheap nor efficient so long term use of storage will undoubtedly cost more than hydrocarbon energy for a few decades yet.

4kW solar will roughly deliver (as I understand) 6-10kWh per day in the UK.
A full electric vehicle battery is 40-80kWh by comparison and a Tesla Powerwall 13kWh (both last a lot longer than 4yrs btw)
@@corrigenda70 Need the Wind Farms to split water into Hydrogen and Ogygen then push the Hydrogen in to the Natural Gas networks and Liquify if for ICE use. Oxygen in to the NHS.

How does the eddy sense the hot water in the cylinder is there a 2nd stat
Looking at EFIX video, it's possible to fit an optional one, however I think it senses the current draw to the heater in this install
heater coil goes open circuit as the thermostat opens, it can detect that - hopefully that was the case rather than not working!

One big problem with 'inteligent' systems is that they don't have weather forcasts built in. I prefer to have manual cotrol sending excess solar in the summer to water though the 'water solar panels' are also giving me too much on a sunny day. In the Uk there will always be some summer days with too much solar and winter between Nov and Feb too little. For me, in winter what solar there is, is better sent to the battery or car whilst the wood stove is heating the water and house.
If the cylinder is up to temp where is the 0.5kw going ?
once the car is full and the tank is heated up the balance of whatever the house isn't using at that moment is exported into the grid.
@@edc1569 It could be used by any other Electrical equipment/appliances in the house. My Router is on 24/7 so will consume power - as will the Radio / TV / Printer / Fridge / Pond pump etc.....
So these people are solely reliant on solar to heat their hot water..? What happens if there isn't enough (sometimes) as I would fair guess knowing Britain as I do.

Obviously it's not your area, but do you know why he was sticking with such an old water tank? The newer insulated cylinders have far greater energy retention, such that they actually make airing cupboards relatively cool, they're so well insulated they can even be put into uninsulated roof spaces.
If I saw 1.7kw going to grid I'd be turning all the hot taps on!

Type test if you use different manufacturers circuit breaker and/or main switch??? You should go deeper to that topic! Sounds really weird to me.
My understanding is, that there needs to be proof that your protective device is safe to use with your DB (keeping the IP rating of the box valid for example). If they are the same brand, it is assumed that that is the case (especially if they come pre-mounted) but it cannot be assumed for all brands.
Some MCBs might leave a gap in the front cover because they don't fit perfectly, or they might prevent you from closing the cover.
If the manufacturer supplies a certificate that it is ok to use them, then they assume liabilty.

@@holladiewal6812 Yes, it is obvious that you can't install parts that does not fit. I know there is weird bottom busbar solutions in UK and those might be manufacturer specific but in case on this video, there is standard DIN rail mount witch means that you can install any device that is made for DIN standard and it will fit. This is the reason why the standard exists.
While I get the point, this isn't the design of an aircraft, as competent professional you should be able to make a decision, in the commercial world people are always mixing different components with different enclosures, you can't tear a building apart because the original manufacturer of that enclosure isn't about anymore.
@@peto22 Just because the breakers fit the DIN rail - it does'nt necessarily follow that the CU front cover will fit properly over the front of the MCBs/RCBO's/Main Switch.

BP Chargemaster is the largest EV Charging company in the UK and there is nothing wrong with the product if used correctly. You can't slate and compare an 5 year old product to a brand new one. Your videos used to be entertaining but now your getting to big for your boots when it comes to EV's. Just because you passed the EV charging course, it doesn't make you a specialist.
Largest doesn't necessarily make them better. At least he's sharing his knowledge and having passed the EV course - it kinda does make him a sort of specialist.
