When people are acting out there’s typically an underlying reason....calling the cops isn’t always the needed response. In this case it was a blessing for this lady that right cop responded. Awesome
In this case, it should have been CLEARLY obvious to not call the police. But in general every day situations when people are acting out, people don’t understand psychology nor have the time or patience.
In an alternate universe a hearing impaired illiterate citizen got frustrated at the dmv and a social worker was called b/c police funds had been reallocated...The social servant quickly assessed her needs and started signing with her. Positive results were achieved *By Design* rather than accident/luck.
I have a couple customers like this, one is deaf and the other suffered a stroke. Both are extremely kind and highly apologetic for having to help them. I feel bad because I can only imagine how hard it can be to communicate at other establishments and that they have to apologise for something out of their control. I am always happy to take the time to help them.
WOW .. she also needed to set up an appointment so that the DMV could have the interpreter there. But that being said... they have paper and pen they could have written down do you need an interpreter? And then gotten one for her if she needed one.
@@KoriEmerson Great point...But it's 2020 (now 2021, happy new year). If the person request an interpreter one must be provided. I understand tht she walked in. However, the dmv (i would think by now) would have an interpreter service on speed dial, with video call capabilities. Last year, an Amazon delivery driver (who is deaf) was signing with someone on his phone. As far as i could tell, he had issues with my delivery. Shame on the dmv if a service is not in place for walk-ins. As big as the dmv is, no excuse. ***Pen and paper does not always convey all the details and emotions. And, it's an insult to many in the deaf community. Speaking from experience.
Everybody should learn at least SOME ASL (or whatever sign language of your country). Can you imagine how frustrating life must be for this woman? Barely anybody knows her only language and that must feel so damn lonely. I’m finishing up my fourth year of ASL and the Deaf community is full of so many wonderful people who make it so worth it to learn the language 💖
I don’t know ASL. Honestly where I live Spanish is far more helpful to more people. However all it takes is brain cells. I was in McDonald’s and the lady in front of us was clearly hearing impaired. The workers are usually young kids and had no clue. I tapped her and handed her paper and a pen. She wrote what she wanted and I ordered for her. She hugged me rolling her eyes at the general cluelessness. Also almost all hearing impaired can lil read. Simply face them and speak clearly and at a reasonable pace.
unfortunatly, I only know hello, how are you, do you need assistance, yes , no, help, and I do not know sign languange, please wait, and you know anything you can combine out of those lol I know about as much in Japanese Sign Lang.
Hearing people don’t understand the Deaf culture and the VERY expressive way they communicate. It may look like she’s going to cause a problem, yet again Deaf people express themselves what looks to us as Very dramatic. I will say I know how frustrating it can be for people who are Deaf to live in this hearing world. My roommate was Deaf and I took ASL (American Sign Language) in college. I’m so happy to see that this officer took the time to learn ASL.
I always wished that sign language was one of the options in high school and college when having to choose a language. Sign language would be much more useful in situations where people can’t talk in an emergency, from far away, underwater and in space.
Agree with that wholeheartedly. Learned some ASL years ago working for a human services nonprofit and have forgotten most of it. Have used some of what I remember in retail, which has surprised the customers. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to communicate.
this is only an option when the Education system actually teaches people skills to live, but unfortunately they are only being taught how to take tests.
@@enightc You know, if people feel strongly enough about this topic, they could go and learn ASL on their own time. Yes? It was not in that officer's job description to help that lady. He PAID for her Identification Card. He didn't have to do that. Like come on people! Seriously?!
Some schools do include it in their language requirement options. But someone in dmv should have realized the issue and had an interpreter come in instead of calling police
My neighbor's daughter is hearing impaired. Her face lit up when I was able to communicate somethings with her. I'm learning and teaching my little ones. The more languages you know, you are more of an asset to society.
No. The question is why could they not use English... such and pen and paper or a tablet? We can't get most people to be fluent in English, especially in Los Angeles. Hmmm... maybe that goes back to my point.
It’s obvious she’s hearing impaired, I don’t believe that’s the reason the cops were called. Perhaps the cops were called because she became “hostile” when she was told she didn’t have enough money for an ID card, because all of that info should have been communicated in writing. They obviously dispatched an officer who knew how to sign. They’re really trying to make it appear as if her civil liberties were violated.
It doesn't matter whether he just happened to know it or learned it and practices it you showing a mad face emoji over a few words is hilarious there are more important things to be mad about like city employees getting paid a lot and not one of them realized she's deaf and/or knew sign language (they really need to start accomodating people more and hiring people with more diverse skills).
@ World Girl : You're missing the point. It's not that the CHP officer magically came to know sign language without any effort. It's that the officer who showed up to deal with a disturbance involving a deaf person "happened" to be one who knew American Sign Language -- a lucky coincidence, since most people don't know ASL. (Now, the cynical part of me thinks that it's quite possible that the DMV staff mentioned the customer's hearing disability when they called the CHP, and that the dispatcher purposely sent out an officer who knew sign language. In that case it _wouldn't_ be just an amazingly lucky coincidence, and the use of word "happened" would then be inappropriate.)
they probably had a special phone or kiosk there for them. that officer works there so they did have one. she was probably making loud grunting noises and people were scared of her.
1. She is supposed to make an appointment if she has special communication needs. 2. Soverine immunity. Cannot sue the state for something like that. 3. Parking spaces and ramps provided for people who can't walk. You still gotta bring your own wheel chair.
@K Maxx she may not know how to write in english. Maybe she was born elsewhere and knows how to write her native language but not english and relies on ASL until she learns the english language.
When I was in elementary school we had a separate class for the hearing impaired so the school had the teachers teach us basic asl just so we can communicate with each other during recess but after a few years the budget got cut and I didn’t see any of those kids anymore.

When people are acting out there’s typically an underlying reason....calling the cops isn’t always the needed response. In this case it was a blessing for this lady that right cop responded. Awesome
Uncomfortable Karen calling Johnny Law. Luckily, Jose showed up.
In this case, it should have been CLEARLY obvious to not call the police. But in general every day situations when people are acting out, people don’t understand psychology nor have the time or patience.

Was the DMV fined? Last i checked, ADA applies to the DMV.
They should be fine for not having the proper people working
I was thinking the same thing, they're in violation of federal law.
WOW .. she also needed to set up an appointment so that the DMV could have the interpreter there.

Its the DMV in California. You question anything, you're a disturbance.
The DMV is a scarry place

When you are deaf and expect other people who is not deaf to understand your language, then yes you are one Deaf jerk off...
exactly the world is crazy.......have they not heard of a thing called pen and paper
Everyone does know SOME sign language 🖕🏻 It’s universal.
Writing is always an option!!
Simply face them and speak clearly and at a reasonable pace.
unfortunatly, I only know hello, how are you, do you need assistance, yes , no, help, and I do not know sign languange, please wait, and you know anything you can combine out of those lol
I know about as much in Japanese Sign Lang.
Also I know the elephant is on fire. I have no idea if I will ever be able to use it but I can say The Elephant is on fire.
Yes? Why wait until it's handed to you on a platter? also those who deride the education system are completely free and able to continue to study whatever interests them on their own time too. My older brother is deaf and while growing up in the 90’s he never had issues communicating with people. It’s called “pen and paper”! I’m sure the DMV had some lying around and could’ve easily used it.
'could' is the key word...some folks are so trife...they won't make the effort to help someone disabled or 'hearing impaired'...
A lot of people still believe the idea "deaf and dumb" and will not read a note if a deaf person writes one or write back. I've seen it happen.
Even just to ask if she needed an interpreter. It’s so dumb.
Can she read and write? Want to make it more difficult? That's probably what started the whole disturbance. Don't assume. Think positive not only the negative. Live free.

It was not in that officer's job description to help that lady. He PAID for her Identification Card. He didn't have to do that. Like come on people! Seriously?!
That’s why they should have ASL, as a class in school, like Spanish and French classes.
Not gone happen
Some schools do include it in their language requirement options. But someone in dmv should have realized the issue and had an interpreter come in instead of calling police
My neighbor's daughter is hearing impaired. Her face lit up when I was able to communicate somethings with her. I'm learning and teaching my little ones. The more languages you know, you are more of an asset to society.
Totally agree because that language is not just for deaf but even for other people with other needs which can hear but not speak . ☝️
My school had it
Officer didn't " happen to know sign language" 😠 I'm pretty sure he darn well LEARNT and practices it!

Technically the dmv could have been sued for not having an asl interpreter
Should and still can be
Getting sued only rises the DMV Fees though. She'll get money, but it still isn't really a loss for the DMV.
