I had the pleasure of helping deaf customers at McDonald's when I was a teen. One man tried to write his order when his pen quit. He started to gesture and I signed, "Just spell it for me." The relief on his face gave me such delight. 🥰
I was a bartender and a Train Conductor and I was able to sign to my deaf customers because my aunt is deaf and she taught me as a kid how to communicate with her. It's pretty cool when a hearing impaired customer discovers that you can communicate with them. The sense of relief (especially the traveling public) because they're trying to get somewhere and the fear of ending up in the wrong place must be frightening. It also helps me help them. I recommend everyone especially POLICE take sign courses. Did you know that the deaf are terrified of police? Because they cannot hear an officers commands they are at higher risk of being shot or arrested. So, to be a police officer, I feel that being able to communicate with the deaf is important and one class could make all the difference.
I never would have thought of that. Thank you for bringing up that point. I think we all need to learn to be more tolerant and understanding. More education is necessary to understand all aspects of life.
@kim cho exactly my point. Imagine being in a country where you cannot understand a word of their language, Now, further complicate the inability to understand. Not only can you not understand their words, but you can't understand the tone of their voices. You can't decipher the urgency in their command, the panic in their tone of voice, warning you that you're making them nervous because you're not complying. (Because you can't- you don't know what they want). You can't communicate. And you reach into your pocket for your phone to translate for you... the officer misunderstandings your movements because his experience with you is that you're non-compliant. What happens next? More often than not, in a panic, you're shot. One college class American Sign Language (ASL) could save lives, help officers communicate with the deaf and helping the officer by him or her not having to live with killing an innocent person just because they couldn't hear you.
This goes for medical professionals as well, I can fingerspell (which is the most basic sign language skill that honestly everyone should know) and when i had surgery and couldn't speak afterwards, I tried communicating with the nurses that way as I was waking up from anesthesia, and no one could really understand me. It was very scary and I can't imagine how much scarier it'd be if I couldn't even hear what the nurses were saying.

Everyone’s talking about how this seems like a simple act and stuff but y’all don’t understand how hard it can be for deaf ppl these days, I’ve never met a person that can sign and imagine the ppl who are deaf you know, it is an awesome thing that he took it upon himself to learn sign just because, more people should do that
Kaylen. I took ASL in college for a year but I forgot a lot since I stopped using it unfortunately. I still know all the letters / numbers etc, but I’d be scared to sign with a deaf person. I really enjoyed it though after learning for a year :)
Ethan Naka I think learning it even once is awesome and creates a basis of communication but don’t be scared to sign anything you know bc i know they’ll see the effort and it would be greatly appreciated
I've never met anyone who can sign but i've also never met a deaf person. They could always resort to a dry erase board or a notebook for short interactions. Full on conversations would be a bit more inconvenient, but it's still an option.
i bet the bosses would be making way more money if they paid for the employees to learn basic sign language, so why not? they are dealing with general public after all, at least they could be taught hiw to do the most basic and needed signs
My youngest daughter had a deaf girl in her grade 4 class, the entire class was taught basic sign language. The kids were keen to learn so they could chat silently in class. One of her friends has gone on to be a speech therapist for the deaf community and married a deaf guy, her matron of honour was the deaf girl from primary school.
Not trying to be a dick or anything, but can't deaf people just write down what they want, and show the message to the other person? Or type it on their phone, then show the phone to the other person?
@@Vagabond_EtrangerI’m not in the deaf community but I imagine that writing things on a phone/tablet is cumbersome and signing is much easier if you’ve learned.

I'm not a millennial.. I was born in '88. But honestly I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. I don't think this kid should be commemorated for doing exactly what he's supposed to do with a tool that he was fortunate enough to pick up. I mean to me that's sort of like a parent being rewarded for taking care of their kid. But people are acting like this dude ran inside a burning building with no regard for his own life, to save a baby. I mean.. If he didn't use his skills to help that guy, then he would be an asshole right? So why is everyone making a big deal about a guy doing what he very well should be expected to do
I already applaud him for having that huge interest with sign language, you basically take that course not for yourself but to help others communicate like he did here.
This is truly a heart warming story. Learning a whole new language just for the small majority that he could help whilst doing so. Every little helps. Well done Caleb!
It's great he learned a new skill. To communicate with a relative minority group. Well done, truly. Though the media of course jumps on this as a supreme accomplishment. Keep it up the learning thing people of the US. :)
During Covid, I had my kids learn ASL just for the heck of it and something to learn. We only know one deaf person in our church; her mother signs the whole Mass for her. It's been inspiring to watch. I feel like ASL is something that should be pushed more to learn, for the deaf community.
what I think is sad is how this is considered kindness, it would be the same as if a Spanish person came in and someone who spake Spanish had to communicate with them and take their order, I mean something similar happened to me, I was helping run a booth at a local rodeo and this little girl cam over and I started to tell her the rules for the game but her mom said that she was deaf, so than I told her the rules in sign language, but that wasn't kindness that was cool lol, I love finding people who know sign language, it's more popular than you'd think
I worked at a gas station that is still located near a school for the deaf. I wasn't previously aware, but I put 2 and 2 together after a few weeks of starting. I can't sign for the life of me, but I learned how to sign 'thank you' as a way of making sure they knew I appreciated them as customers. The way their faces lit up each time still pulls at my heart.
This is not only just humble but simply beautiful. Such a young and thoughtful man. His parents have raised him right. Thankyou Caleb for making others feel integrated x
If you want to see more Taco Bell employees, go to a Taco Bell. As for the act of kindness, it was merely him doing his job. The fact that it is commended so highly as it is is baffling.
@john wallace It's a nightmare for those of us who are hard of hearing, that's for sure. Thankfully, my hearing issues are mild enough that with more focus and practice, I've been able to breeze by just getting the gist of what people are saying, but I still have to avoid loud environments. Otherwise, my biggest crutch is gone and all I hear is a blur of indistinguishable noises with nothing to help give some clarity.
@john wallace yeah it’s horrible. As a deaf person myself it’s added an extra level of isolation. But I get by by asking ppl to remove their masks so I can lip read.
What's so cool about this young man is his modesty. He seems genuinely surprised that this video was even recorded, let alone went viral, and that people were noticing. In his mind, he simply felt privileged to have a chance to use his sign language skills, but he didn't realize that his professionalism, kindness, and patience would not go unnoticed. The world needs more true winners like this guy. I know this video is kinda old now, so I hope that he's found his niche and that he is continually being appreciated.
If you think about it, yeah, it's surprising that people make a huge deal about this. He works in customer service and a customer spoke a language that he happens to know. So he has 2 choices, either speak in their language, or not speak it and be an asshole even though he knows how. So he pretty much just chose to not be an asshole and did the job he's paid for. I suppose it's a better news story than all the negative stuff, but yeah, what is the big deal lol.
@@mogdor I think you just might have a more negative perspective, it isn't a big deal to be kind, it should just be apart of their job. Kenneth Ho Came in the comments section to say exactly what you did. I've taken a few years of ASL myself and studied Deaf culture. There is a SERIOUS misconception as to how Deaf people interact in this world. Hearing people can make every effort to communicate with them but most choose not to. Deaf people can't do the same in return which leaves the hearing more lost than anyone because most people don't realize the importance of learning the language.
In England, where I went to primary school, they taught us sign language at a young age. I remember we each had to learn to sign a story every week for the class. Not sure if its a standard across all schools here

The parents of that young man should be very proud. He personifies humanity at it’s best.

I served a deaf customer at work. Well her daughter was deaf.
I saw her signing to her mom while in line so I told my crew I’d take care of it. I said “welcome, my name is Scott. I’m learning ASL, so please sign slowly, and I’m sorry if I get a few words wrong”
Well the daughter just lit up with delight, and the mom appreciated me making an effort for trying to communicate.
I got by thankfully, i won’t deny that I struggled but the mother helped me with some words I wasn’t too sure with

Everyone’s talking about how this seems like a simple act and stuff but y’all don’t understand how hard it can be for deaf ppl these days, I’ve never met a person that can sign and imagine the ppl who are deaf you know, it is an awesome thing that he took it upon himself to learn sign just because, more people should do that
They are saying that this should be normal but they are complaining here instead of learning sign language to make this normal.
@@Vagabond_Etrangerwhy learn any language at all then if we can all just google translate on our phones

Then lose your trust in humans and despise them when you truly learn how ugly mankind can be. when I was a child I was scared of ghost but as I grew older I've realized humans are scarier.
Grammar Police. That is SERIOUSLY true..Humans are MUCH worst than ghosts.. ghosts can be visually scary but humans.. oh God don't even get me started.

During Covid, I had my kids learn ASL just for the heck of it and something to learn. We only know one deaf person in our church; her mother signs the whole Mass for her. It's been inspiring to watch. I feel like ASL is something that should be pushed more to learn, for the deaf community.
Found this story to be very touching , great young man , the best.
It's sad that kindness makes the news.
leah hogans i understand. but can be refreshing among all the horrendous things. but i get what u saying.
leah hogans So because it was kind is should have not have been on the news?
it's better than Kardashians and other celebs' news
BaN6k2 what he/she is implying is that kidness is pretty rare these days
what I think is sad is how this is considered kindness, it would be the same as if a Spanish person came in and someone who spake Spanish had to communicate with them and take their order, I mean something similar happened to me, I was helping run a booth at a local rodeo and this little girl cam over and I started to tell her the rules for the game but her mom said that she was deaf, so than I told her the rules in sign language, but that wasn't kindness that was cool lol, I love finding people who know sign language, it's more popular than you'd think
God bless you! Pls learn more. That way you help them even more. 🙏🏼
May God bless your kind soul!

@john wallace oh yeah true.
😭
@john wallace yeah it’s horrible. As a deaf person myself it’s added an extra level of isolation. But I get by by asking ppl to remove their masks so I can lip read.
@john wallace I didn't even think of that . The Chinese really did their research with this virus
This was what the world needs rn, his parents don't need no material gifts, their son was the gift.
Beautifully expressed!
Yes like me
If you think about it, yeah, it's surprising that people make a huge deal about this.
We all just want to share in something that makes us happy and feel bonded as a humanity, especially in these times where many people havent seen their friends or family for a year or so
@@sapphire3735 Yes it puts positive vibes out there, better than a lot of news these days and that's definitely a good thing. Good on that boy for being super polite and diligent with that man.
Thank you too. For the same reasons. Your act of kindness gave your customer so much comfort,
1) to know you care enough to make the effort
2) that he has somewhere to go and feel normal.
More schools should offer Sign Language as an elective, my daughter took it for 2 yrs., I wish she would have continued. What most people don't realize is, not only is it helping hearing impaired people, but, it is considered a 2nd language for most jobs and because there is a need your chance of being hired is greater....
Rio DJeNIRO I learnt ASL as a LOTE because I didn't want to do Chinese or Spanish, however I already knew rather complex ASL before that because I was friends with a kid who was *fortunately* (some say it's a misfortune but I disagree) deaf, but I got better at ASL grammar and got faster at fingerspellings plus as extra credit I learnt the BSL/Auslan fingerspellings too idk why but I got a 95 so I guess it was worth it
Rio DJeNIRO yes! im 29 and have wanted to learn so badly!! my 11 yr old and I are going to try and take classes together

5 years after first seeing this and it’s still just as impressive. I hope that guys life is going well
whats impressive? That he speaks a 2nd language and responded in it to a customer that only spoke that language? Would you praise a spanish speaking american for helping someone that only speaks spanish out?
@@Gunsforbuns cope harder
@@Gunsforbuns You know that’s not the same.
@@jaret6661 Its the same in the sense that he just picked something at "random" in highschool to study as his second language. He didnt pick sign language to help people like the video and the entire deluded comment section says. He literally said himself that he picked it because he didnt just want to pick spanish like everyone else. The fact that this gets broadcasted on the news is laughable

Bearded bread my thoughts the moment I watched this. Honestly this should be a common thing.
It's in Cleveland what real news do they have in Cleveland? Nothing happens there lol
True that doing what used to be "accepted" behavior is now rare but in reality, any good deed should not go unrewarded. The fact that we have YT, Facebook, et al as a place to record and disseminate is a good thing.
I had a deaf customer come in when I was younger and doing fast food cashier work and sadly I had to get them to write down what they wanted. I don't know sign language, but I would eventually like to. It has to be frustrating learning sign language to communicate and then realize that most people do not know it.
That's true. I think it's one reason there are deaf "communities," like at CSU Northridge and of course Gallaudet College, but in many other places too. Also most deaf people are incredibly good at reading lips, but it's not nearly as good a way to understand as is sign.
deenibeeniable True. I work with a few deaf people and none of them can sign, but they read lips so well that I often forget they're hearing impaired. And they speak quite well too.
Khaltazar maybe schools should make sign language the required language instead of Spanish
ItsOrval You should have to learn another language in school , definitely, but more people speak Spanish than sign, so Spanish would be more useful.
Khaltazar yea, I put a new note beside me every time I'm at work that I can give 2someone if they need it 2order that says:Dine in or 2go- Just in case 😍
Bless his heart!!! If only even half of our youth could be like him. Thinking of how he can be of help to society instead of being nuisance.
I think most youth speak the languages they know when talking to people that speak that language lol
Breaking news: 2 people converse in same language. More at 11.
JonO387 breaking news not really. Guy sees something on RUclips that is good and wants to downplay it. Well done jerk. Well done.
This is a normal thing that happens every day all of the world.I'm not downplaying it. Reality is.
yeah but cosidering the mental process in signing is greater than with spoken language, it does become a little more than someone having a conversation, and besides, isnt it nice to occasionjhally see what somebody did to help out another human being, or are you of the opinion that only videos that show people being rude nasty and aggressive to others is what we should all be watching, arent you tired of that crap yet?
JonO387 FUCK! WE'RE DOING IT RIGHT NOW! CALL CNN!
Martine, I had the same thought. He could work as a court translator for example.
I also went to a signlanguage course when I was younger. I can imagine how much it means to someone TO BE missunderstood all the time and then this young boy starts signing to him. Awesome!❤
What a great young man he is. Compassion for people. Some of the comments are off the issue.

I began to learn Spanish back in the 1980s. My friends all made fun of me. Now, I speak it at a very near native level. I cannot tell you how many times that I've suddenly found myself in a position needing to use my Spanish to help someone communicate. It is so emotionally rewarding that it defies description. I have never regretted learning that second language. It is the same when anyone wants to learn ANY language and this includes ASL. So, when I watched Caleb here in this video, I could completely identify with him and admire/respect him too.
Your 'friends' aren't real ones, willing to tear you down. They're probably jealous and they should be, you were willing to expand your mind and they weren't. Bilingualism or being a polyglot is amazing! Everyone in the world can be your friend
I'm jealous, I choose French in college and speak it well enough to get by. But in southern California, I should have chosen Spanish.
I'm so PROUD of you!! I tried Spanish, but had a block,; learned to speak French but let it slip away due to lack of practice! DON'T LET YOUR GIFT SLIP AWAY!!

that is the sweetest thing! my daddy went partially deaf years ago, n he has to wear a hearing aid, but he took a class for sign language and he's very very fluent in it. He's a preacher and very VERY outgoing and loving to everyone, and over the years, I've seen him be very helpful to people and if he sees someone who may be deaf, he will go up to them n be very nice and just start a conversation with them while doing sign language. I know just a little bit while watching him do it over the years. I at least know the alphabet!😊
What a great young man. We need more like him in this world.
I had to help with a deaf man, him and his buddy was in the drive through and I signed "you're deaf?" And he nodded so excited but still used text and it made my day. The people in the drive thru at the intercom was so rude though. I had to tell them "well I apologise but I'm taking care of a deaf customer, if you did not want to wait you could have left" god.
Roast those impatient spoiled brats who can't understand that some people have special needs haha. I'm glad you stood up for him. 🤗😊
I kind of get the why do ppl make the news for being nice tho. I just treat ppl like ppl. Im never rude until ppl r rude to me. Other times, u prob just caught me in a bad mood. I try to keep it under wraps. But at worst, im prob just stand offish, quiet, look annoyed, I might try to cut u off, or my tone might be off. I even go out ofmy way to avoid any interaction sometimes. But im never outright rude. Not for the most part. I dont got sh to prove to most. Theres no reason y I would treat anyone different. Although, I am immature sometimes. Theres def stuff I say, that I shouldn't be saying. Actually, if someone tried making a vid of some random act of my kindness, id cringe little like im not always that nice tho, fr
Amazing young guy!! Well done. I hope you do so well in life

You can ask him to write down his questions and what he wants. It's that simple, if you don't know ASL.
@@oahuhawaii2141 people don't want to do that. Because it's out of the way and "disruptive" or "takes too long". Do you know how many times I've been kicked out for both of those reasons?

What a great guy!
The reporter "signed out". That was beautiful.
Well that happened to me. I was talking to the cashier and I notice that she was deaf by pointing at her name tag with a written I'm deaf please write your orders in the paper on the table(or something like that). So I signed FSL(Filipino Sign Language). To her reaction she was surprised and happy. She question me a lot about Are you deaf or mute too? How'd you learn sign language? How long have you been signing? It's kinda difficult for me to answer her questions because It's my first time using sign language to another person. I've been learning signing. She laughed and good thing no one in line. Only us.
It's a nice experience using sign language and to the person you're talking.
