I remember that the DVD had a great “making of behind the scenes“ that explained how the whole movie came together. The Director knew he wanted Bruce Willis. When Bruce read the script, he told M night Shyamalan, that the role of Cole was uncastable. He simply didn’t believe there was a child actor who could do the part justice. The Director said that finding Haley Joel Osmond was the magic that the film needed.

If you loved Haley Joel Osment. watch " Second Hand Lions" made just after this one. He gets handed off to 2 cantankerous old Uncles living on a run down old farm where they fill him with stories of their youth. The 2 Uncles are played by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall and they don't take crap from nobody sitting on their porch holding shotguns. A very heart warming story.

The comedian Nate Bargatze does a great bit in his stand-up about how shocking the twist was for everyone when the movie first came out. He said it made more sense to men that the wife wasn’t talking to the husband for a year, rather than to consider the fact that he was dead. 😂

Omg coming back because I got to the end. My dad predicted it! The rest of the family had watched it so we knew the twist, then we watched it again when my dad could join us. The single greatest twist in movie history, but no other movie can make you feel all the emotions. Fear (scary parts), Anger (locking Cole in that closet and being mad at the women for making her child sick), Sadness, and sentiment (scene in the car and when Malcolm is saying goodbye to his wife). Just a masterpiece.

OH! Also M Knight likes to do cameos, like Stephen King and Stan Lee. In this one, he is the doctor concerned about the cuts and bruises.

Shyamalan has done a lot of interesting movies since then (as well as a few abysmal ones) but I still consider this one his very best to this day. Seeing this in theatres when first released- There was an audible gasp and collective jaw drop. Folks tended to keep the twist amazingly close to the vest too, for the sake of future audiences and some might say out of sheer respect. I imagine it would be MUCH more difficult to do today w social media, etc!
No matter how many times I see the film- and it’s been a few😂- I’m always struck by a few things:
•Toni Collette is one of the most underrated, underappreciated actors in the game.
•Donnie Wahlberg is absolutely, positively unrecognizable in the opening scene as Vincent, proving that, truly- there are no small parts!
•Cole is so pure he simply cannot bring himself to lie to his beloved Mama about the 🐝 pendant- even when it would have been so much easier to say ‘Ok- I took it; I miss Grandma; I’m sorry’. This serves to make Cole’s burden even more pungent to the audience.
•I love Michael Caine and liked Cider House Rules, but imho Haley Joel Osment was robbed of an Oscar that year. But then- the Academy didn’t ask for my opinion😅 (You might also remember him as little Forrest in Forrest Gump:)
    •And more recently…
I am going to really REALLY miss Bruce Willis🥹 I already do😔

The reason why Cole kept spending time inside the church is because he noticed that there were no ghosts there or at least no bad ones could enter. That's why he recreated a miniature church tent in his house. This is hinted at by Malcolm when he tells Cole that in old times people took refuge in churches as a sanctuary in order to escape bad people who wanted to hurt them. Malcolm and Kyra are able to get into these sacred spaces because they don't have any negative energy and that's why after some initial hesitation and surprise Cole actually engages with them.
Also, Malcolm being a ghost can go through doors without needing to open them, he just doesn't realize that and finds himself inside a room whenever he wants to.
His work material and possessions have been stored in the basement since his death and seen as nobody needs to access all that stuff, his wife put a table in front of it. She might have put a table there also because, like the lady in the kitchen, he kept trying to open it even tho he didn't need to.
Cole's mother worked two jobs that barely kept them afloat. She wouldn't have been able to afford a psychiatrist for her son, let alone one of Malcolm's caliber who even won awards for his work so the only way he could help Cole make sense of it all was as a ghost therapist.

This was the film that made M Night Shyamalan's career...and almost ruined it.
The studio didn't understand the film, so they marketed it as a horror/ghost story.
This film has ghost characters in it, but them being ghosts if not really the point.
This is a film about forgiveness (including self-forgiveness) and healing. This is a film about how love and forgiveness heals.
Do you know about Rod Serling, the host and talent behind "The Twilight Zone"?
Serling wrote the stories on "Twilight Zone", which was an anthology series; that means each story, each episode, was stand-alone. The stories did not reference any other story in the series. And Serling wrote in an array of genres: Civil War, WWII, time travel, alien contact, supernatural, wild west, post-apocalyptic, and more. They were morality tales, the stories driven by human nature.
M Night Shyamalan is our current Rod Serling. Just as Serling used genres as the costuming to present his morality plays, so does Shyamalan. This was not a horror story. His film "Signs" is not an alien invasion story. "The Village" is not a historical gothic story. The "Unbreakable" trilogy is not a superhero story. Shyamalan uses the genre as a costume, a mask, to present a deeper story.
The details in this film are incredible; you need multiple viewings to find them and put them into context. Those details serve the story. So impressed you caught some of the more nuanced ones, like the orbs showing up in Cole's baby pictures.
When you first watch this film, you are watching Malcolm's film, what he experienced and understood. The next time you watch, it will be Cole's film, what Cole experienced and understood. Like almost every time Cole speaks of 'seeing' Malcolm, he's not speaking of seeing him professionally, like a patient; Cole is almost always speaking of seeing this ghost named Malcolm.
    Some background/trivia:
-The color red was especially meaningful in this film. Shyamalan had anything related to death or ghosts colored red. Anything that was normally red when acquired was repainted a different color to isolate that association.
-Shyamalan plays a small cameo role in all his films; in this one, he was the ER doctor who called in the social worker.
-Shyamalan is a devoted family man; for that reason, all his films are shot in Pennsylvania, where he and his extended family live, so that he can go home each night to be with his family.
-Haley Joel Osment had previously played Forrest Gump's son (you should see him in 2001's "A.I." and 2003's "Secondhand Lions"); Shyamalan could not rate this boy highly enough on his acting chops. Osment aced every take filmed, hitting just the right emotionality at every second and crying at exactly right amount exactly on cue. And that last scene in the car...no one with a heart or soul can watch that without crying, no matter how many times you watched it before.
-It's said that those who have difficulty letting a deceased loved one go will hold the person's ghost close so they can't 'move on'; there's evidence in the story of Malcolm's wife holding him through her intense mourning and by carrying his wedding ring with her (you get a sense of that in her explanation about the blue sapphire ring).
-It's said those who died suddenly or traumatically (and Malcolm did both) end up in complete denial of being dead. They carry the wounds of their death with them as trauma they keep turning away from. Once they accept they have passed on and realize they still exist in spirit form, the wounds disappear. For Malcolm, his wound didn't become apparent to him until his wife's focus on losing him was momentarily lessened by receiving her employee's attention during that hug. As Malcolm hurried down that alley, he was holding his hand over the bullet's entry hole.
The film leaves you with this thought:
The dead get trapped like flies in amber because they 'only see what they want to see'.
Their options (like 'moving on') are limited because of their own expectations.
This film works because the audience only sees what it expects to see, which is that Malcolm survived the shooting.
And people define this film as 'horror' because the studio marketed it as a horror film, setting up that expectation.
As a result, Shyamalan's subsequent films are misunderstood. A real shame and unearned. The man is an artist and a genius.
Really love the sensitivity you express in your reaction. This is my first time checking out your channel, so now I'm looking up your other films. (Hope you finish the Harry Potter films; there's only three to go, and I usually binge a reactor's full 8-film franchise set, so I'm waiting.) ❣

The boy actors real name is Haley Joel Osment. After filming this movie. Bruce Willis said in an interview that Hailey was the most professional actor he'd ever worked with. Bruce Willis was super impressed with the young actor.
Haley Joel Osment has several other movies. My favorites of his are this one, Pay It Forward, Second Hand Lions, and A. I. Where he gives a fantastic performance playing the first child robot in a futuristic would where robots serve human kind. In this particular role Hailey Joel decided on his own that a robot wouldn't need to blink it's eyes. So he performed the entire movie without blinking his eyes even once. What a great kid, now adult. But I don't know if he continued acting into adulthood. But one of my all time favorite child actors.

Another great movie that very few reactors have tackled is SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISHER.
It's a great movie based on a true story. The little boy actor in this one is a treasure as well.
Unfortunately when this movie was released there were three big blockbusters also released at the same time and this fantastic movie was lost in the background. But it's really a great movie.

The thing about M Knights movies is, you can't put them completely in the box. Yes, it could be considered horror, but it is soo much more than that. Yes it has scary elements, but that isnt the story being told. Its actually about relationships and finding peace. 💞

Great video! M Night's work is pretty inconsistent in my opinion, but "Signs" is another really good one from him that I think you would enjoy :) Haley Joel Osment was INCREDIBLE in this movie, and although he was nominated for an Oscar, he lost to Michael Cain. And Michael Cain is a wonderful actor, but I think Haley should have won, no contest. Cheers!

  • @dsscam
    @dsscam 4 месяца назад +1

I love watching 1st time "The Sixth Sense" reactions. However, I was concerned that you were spoiled by the iconic line. I just watched a reaction in which one of the two girls obviously FAKED that she figured it out and ruined it for the other girl. It was one of the worst reaction videos; 99% of the time, the ending reactions are top-notch, even if 1 of the 2 has seen it. Usually, they don't ruin it like this girl did. But even though you knew about the "I see Dead People," once that scene passed, your reaction was spectacular. I subscribed and hit the bell. You are correct that Haley Joel Osment deserved the Oscar for this performance, but the Oscar people have never been competent. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, as did Toni Collette (his mom) for Best Supporting Actress and Best Editing. M Night Shyamalan got 3 nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. The movie deserved a sweep, but it didn't win any. Ridiculous. M Night, by the way, appears in cameo parts in ALL his movies. In this movie, he was the Doctor.
