    Something I've been doing is to cut a circle of window screen to fit on the top of the soil of a pot. I cut a circle in the middle and slice it from the outer edge to the inner circle so that I can fit it around the plant. Then I place the top rock, glass, or whatever on top of the screen. When the dirt level begins to sink, I scoop off the top rock or the glass, take up the screen, add the soil and replace the screen and top Rock. In this way, I don't have as much loss of the top rock/glass and I don't have to dig through the dirt looking for chunks of it. Just thought I'd share this in case it would be of interest to anyone else.

    Sand or rocks probably doesn’t matter because of your climate. Definitely I would not use sand as sand holds more water, stays wetter longer? But we get more rainfall, particularly in the winter. For my climate rocks and perlite are the go.. I think it depends on a lot of variables as to what kind of soil is best. thanks for your wonderful videos, it’s always a pleasure watching.❤

      Yes, all the latest from the nurseries and cacti and succulent wholesaler in my area (think climate more like Florida), won’t use sand anymore (they used to) as it holds too much water. Laura should be fine though.

      i think coarser sand, like construction or concrete sand, helps improve drainage, but fine sand like beach or sand used for decorating with isn't good for drainage.

    Thanks for all your videos Laura, I am a fan. In my humble opinion Perlite is too light and always comes above the top dressing and makes the pot look messy. I found Pumice a better choice personally.

    I live in Arizona and I don't use much of the sand because it is heavy and it does hold extra water so I use a perlite in a good cactus soil or even a good plant soil. But I love the way that the perlite is in there and maybe some other chunky things if you have it laying around but what you used in your curly cactus was great I just probably would have added some Pearl light in with that and it would have been perfect

    Yep! Perlite is handy, and I like the coarse stuff too to keep things draining well. Nice way to make potting mix stretch farther especially for succulents! Vermiculite looks similar but holds onto water.

    The new Euphorbia looks amazing in that pot especially with your signature top dressing! Love how you went about the project with the Sawzall…very creative. Here in the East I have used perlite and course sand to root plants like Pelargoniums. Perlite alone is added to soil less potting mixes for increased drainage capacity. Pumice is harder to find in garden centers but perlite is readily available. Sometimes I also add chicken grit or bonsai soil mix. When you say gravel I think of the sand/small rock mix that is used to repair dirt roads. I think it would be fine or pumice which is something you have ready access to.

    Hi Laura! Here in GA (zone 8) I’ve had success using 1 part organic matter (soil) for every two parts of Mineral grit (I use a blend of sand, perlite and chicken grit or crushed granite). My Mangaves and cactus are doing great so far. Thanks as always for sharing your tips and doing this video!🧡

      Doesnt sand retain moisture, where perlite doesnt. I have never used sand in my succulents because I font want mine to stay wet.

    • @user-wj9ew2nz9x
      @user-wj9ew2nz9x Месяц назад

      @@neysabrooks680 I’ve done a lot of reading trying to find the right succulent/cactus soil blend for my zone so I can give my plants the best chance to survive in my Zone 8 area and prevent rot. Many things influence how long soil stays wet, e.g. quantity of water added, sunlight, airflow, and soil structure. I have clay soil, wet summers and even winters!
      Sandy soils tend to dry out faster reason why is ideal for succulents. I read that sand is an excellent ingredient for improving drainage and that the right potting or in-ground soil for succulents should include one part organic materials with two parts mineral materials (coarse sand (builder's sand because the salt from beach sand can desiccate succulents), perlite, pumice rock, and gravel).
      I thought I share this but note that what works for me may not work well for another. I wish I live in the land of milk and honey!🧡

    If you're going to use sand, pay attention to the grade of sand. Coarse to large grain and is what you want, avoid play sand or fill sand.
    If the grain size is too small, it won't create enough air pockets and will continually compact. This lack of air is what promotes rot.
    If you live in a very wet, humid environment... I'd go with pumice. Harder to get your hands on, but super great for drainage and aeration.
