My experience from the G9 and the S5 is that the DFD works best with fast lenses. You used the 1.7 aperture zooms, hence your result is quite good in my book.
Yeah DFD should be better with a shallower depth of field in theory, as the focus drive won't need to move as far to register increased or decreased blurring. Having said that, wide open the lens may not be as sharp, which might hinder the Contrast Detection.
I've been happy with the AF performance on the GH5M2, which does much better than 80%. I'm sure if you run the numbers and see how much footage is in focus and how much is out of focus, the GH6 is probably doing much better than 80%. Heck, if you just look at the number of times it gets it and the number of times it doesn't, I'm sure it does better than 80% on that too.
So provided there is reasonable light levels with no target congestion AF is fine. A congested target requires "M" manual focus. It's easy & foolproof, simply find your target, press "AF ON" button target snaps into focus. Should target move refocus by pressing AF ON. button. I'm shooting outdoors, mid afternoon light, 12-60 F2.8-F4 @ F4, 120mm V-Log 4K 50p 1/100 shutter + dynamic boost + 32x ND = 2,000 Auto ISO. Hand held. Forget the A7S iii. 🎥 🍎
The issue still remains that in 2022 for a Camera costing $2200 and one we've been waiting for five years I don't want vastly improved I want totally fixed especially when there's other cameras on the market at the same price point with an AF system that works all the time.
In your video when you are talking with the brick wall behind you, you can see the camera regularly getting confused and struggling to focus correctly slightly unfocusing and then refocusing. It's enough that once you see it that it is hard to not keep seeing it.
Hello, thank you for sharing your interesting videos. I'd like to ask 2 questions please: 1) if you are in a square with many people and you are using the wide angle, which AF Mode mode do you use? Maybe do you use the 225-Area? 2) If in the Menu of my GH6 I shoot with the first icon (smart mode that follows the human shape), what happens? In that square I would choose Speed +4 and Sensitivity -3. Are these parameters ok? THANK YOU.
the main problem with this autofocus is the focus is perfect when going from the foreground to the background but inverts the camera continues to seek focus towards a 3rd plane? instead of coming back to the foreground instantly... it takes a moment to come back to the foreground. is there a solution ?
You don’t buy Sony for its IBIS 😉 I still use my gh5 with a PL 14-140mm in full daylight and a Sigma 16mm 1.4 in lowlight. Knowing when and how to use my focus systems keeps me out of issues in daytime and in well over 80% in lowlight. I am talking about AFC going AWOL in lowlight. Given the situation I switch between the two systems MF/AFC. Ultimately I use FCP for correction. CDAF hunts and pulses by definition. My question is, how visible is it in my final content. According to my better half……..nope! But then again, she is not a tech savvy 😉, Frans
A good review and my experience completely mirrors yours. The 80/20 rule is what makes this camera less than the absolute bee’s knees, it’s that 20% where you are not quite sure of the results.
Yes I also noticed some pulsing on my piece to camera, so for static interview shots I would recommend using manual focus. Thanks for watching, George.
Looking at your video in 4K on a big 4K screen and when you are talking to the camera you see it hunting for focus constantly, it is so obvious that for any professional setting this would be unusable. Panasonic has pushed the autofocus performance to it's limits within the constraints of contrast based focus and it's just too unreliable. I think it's time to stop comparing and testing something that never will be up to it's task, we just have to accept it for what it is and focus on all the other good features this camera has.
Sorry this AF is bad. You are in and out of focus all the time even when you sit in the same place. When walking toward the camera focus is alwas lagging behind. In wedding shots it never snaps in place. It is always hunting and much of the time out of focus.
Or, there are many more photographers wanting new cameras than Videographers… Could also be that since Panasonic has deeper pockets, they could produce more stock than OM Systems… Either way, this is obviously not your cup of tea… … …
God that pulse at 6:22 in the blurred background to our right looks HORRIBLE. No need to sugar coat this. I love panasonic cameras, I have the S5 and S1, but the AF is way way way worse than phase detect. You shouldn't say "probably" worse. It's a 10 year difference in tech. Everyone knows it.

I use my GH5mk.2 and Fuji XT4 side by side and I find that AF on the GH5 mk 2 is much more reliable of the two!
ive seen sony and canon cameras also miss focus several times

I usually make finger AF, what is the situation when you do this ? Thanks.
Yeah, but what settings did you do to use autofocus. I waited when you show settings 😄

what about using the finger to set a zone limit for where to find focus? I do that and I wonder if that would raise from 80% to higher

Frame rate shot on this video ?

if you were using the gh6 autofocus for this video. it was pulsing for sure.

what area of focus is best?
What were the lenses used for the AF tests?
Hi, I used the Leica 10-25mm f/1.7 and the Leica 25-50mm f/1.7. Thanks for watching, George.
so, which of the lenses you had at 3:10 ?
Hi, this was the Leica 10-25mm f/1.7. I hope you enjoyed the video! George.
No AF settings used is shown
Thanks much.
Name lenses

Still poor autofocus compared with OM1…. Maybe that is why OM1 is sold out and There is plenty of Panasonic stock…..
Or, there are many more photographers wanting new cameras than Videographers… Could also be that since Panasonic has deeper pockets, they could produce more stock than OM Systems…
Either way, this is obviously not your cup of tea…

Video nice, but autofocus is bad, and mean too slow
