  • Top 10 Longest F1 Circuits - Improved Edition
    In this video the top 10 of the longest Formula One circuits. A compilation of abandoned race tracks, operational race tracks and street circuits.
    This is an improved version of an earlier video from march 2018. In this new video we have maps and a voiceover, by Simon Smith, with information about the race circuits.
    Actually, this is the top 10 longest Formula One circuits visited by myself (Herman Liesemeijer, founder of the Circuits of the past website and RUclips Channel). But we show you also the real top 10 of longest F1 tracks, as well as the official positions of the circuits in this video.
    We visit the following circuits:
    Österreichring 0:22
    Rouen-les-Essarts 2:13
    Old Hockenheim 4:08
    Old Charade Clermont-Ferrand 7:37
    AVUS 9:19
    Reims-Gueux 11:43
    Old Monza 13:58

    There was an F1 race at Sebring? Man, don't even want to think about what that race would look like with today's cars. Place is bumpier than Monaco.
    You know what's crazy is that Pescara's only the the third-longest street circuit in Italy to host a World Sportscar Championship race. Targa Florio (72 km, and that's the *short* version) and Mille Miglia (a single lap of a roughly 1000-mile circuit) both blew it out of the water.

      Yeah Sebring is bumpy. But there was also another very bumpy F1 circuit. If you watch next Fridays video you will experience which one that was :)

    Pre-ww1: just use public roads
    Interwar: MORE SPEED
    Cold war: more safety
    Modern: scaled up carting tracks

      The obsession with speed in the inter-war years is related to the Futurist movement. Those guys were batshit crazy, adored war, chaos and speed and many of them -- at least in Italy -- were fascist supporters. Circuits such as Monza were built based on futurist ideals, that's why it's so fast.

    old hockenheim brings tears to my eyes because i remember racing it a lot in sbk 2001 game on my pc when i was young.

      I visited it once in 1999, on the way back home from my work. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures. When I visited it again in 2002 the old part was already demolished.

    There are 2 tracks longer than Österreichring and Rouen-les-Essarts left out of the list: current Spa (7,004 km) and 2010's Bahrain (6,299 km)

      Thanks for the aditional information again :) In case of Spa I choosed the longer version. Bahrain didn't came to mind, maybe because it's a Tilke track ;) But you're right, it should have been mentioned.

      Also now, the new Jeddah Circuit (6,174 km) in Saudi Arabia is longer than the Österreichring. And the new Las Vegas Circuit (6,120 km) will be longer too if it's making its debut next year.

    I have only been to Reims-Gueux, Monza, Spa and Nurburgring

      @@Circuitsofthepast Indeed I do. Pescara and Charade aren't really appealing to me but I wouldn't say no to visiting the others. I did Brooklands last year (Yes I know it is not on this list. lol)

    Visited 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and I just have pascara to go but on the actual top 10 I have visited 9 and 5 so I have nearly visited them all!

    Also the Boavista street circuit (7,4 km), which hosted the Portuguese GP in the 50s

    Old Clermont-Ferrand was basically the kind of F1 track a James Bond villain would design. Snaking around an extinct volcano? Shit your pants dangerous? Yep. And yep.

      Multiple accidents because of loose rocks on road, and even a deaths if I remember correctly.

    i have always been curious, would the avus south curve be a exact copy of the banked north curve? with a slight turn to the right then the banked curve after that?

      Yes the proposed South Corner would have been almost identical to the North Corner, with a slight right turn followed by the banked corner.

    Old interlagos had 7.9 kilometers, and there was F1 races there until 1979 or 1980.

    6:24 Oh, Tilke. The real meaning of Tilke is:
    T - Tracks
    I - I
    L - Like
    K - Killed
    E - Entirely

      Tilke actually want to modernize the old Hockenheim track by widening the straights and enlarge the run-offs. But the circuit bosses wanted a new compact circuit. So it is not Tilke's fault that old Hockenheim was destroyed.

      @@Circuitsofthepast I know, but he didn't declined the assignment. So in my oppinion he is co-responsible for the new Track at Hockenheim.
      But it's not only Hockenheim, Tilke destroyed for Example the Castrol-S from the Nürburgring.
      Last but not least, Tilke Tracks are not very rich in veriety. You know one, you know all.

      @@James_ONeill Well, to decline a million deal... However, I agree that Tilke tracks are almost all the same. He uses the same corners in different circuits. And they all have the same sequence of corners. Slow corner - long straight - slow corner - easy flat out fast corner - slow corner etc.

    Old Avus was around 19 km, and GP were there, or you mention just “F1 GP tracks”, so after 1950? I’d love to see also rating of all longest GP tracks independent of possibility to visit today 👍😉

    Isn't there a long circuit on the outskirts of Brno in the Czech Republic? Don't know if GP racing took place there, but I drove round part of it, and some of the pit buildings are still there. (And some of it was cobblestones !)

    Sir can u review racing car especially formula 1 retro from 30s until 80s.. it common when you reviewing a retro track that should be a race car review.. history.. some deep story about driver dan manufacture.. it seems to be great sir. Seriously i really wanna look this channel get bigger everyday.. I sure u havr a asset to start.. Sorry for my bad spelling.. Hope u get what i wanna dream on Herman Liesermeijer channel and web.

    Red Bull Ring owners have done some work to restore old layout but due to people living near by, for now its ??? whenever we can have it back. I would welcome it back because then it could allow even Endurance races (which could maybe even allow 6hours of Red Bull Ring or something like that).

      Yeah that would be great. But with that people compain about the noise it will be hard to organize endurance racing. However, I hope the old Westschleife will be reconnected one day.

    Question: Should Hockenhiem be on the F1 calender if it does get a new owner that wants to have racing there.

      There is always a change. But there are many countries that want to have a Grand Prix those days. I think Germany, with it's many car manufacturers, should have a GP too.

    19:58 Niki Lauda's brutal crash wasn't the true reason why the F1 got banned from the Nürburgring!!! the true reason is that the Nürburgring was way too dangerous for F1 but Niki Lauda's crash is also a reason

      That''s right. Before the accident they already found it too dangerous. But the Lauda accident was the last push to move the race to Hockenheim.

      I'm not surprised there have been many accidents and fatal crashes. Another was that of Peter Collins, I can't remember if it was 1957 or 58 but that I remember was a bad one as he was in the title fight with Mike Hawthorne and could have been the first British F1 world champion.

    I absolutely Hate the fact that they left Jim Clarks memorial. they could atleast put someting there for him at the new track.

      There are two Jim Clark memorials at Hockenheim. One at the second corner of the current track (shown in the video), where the old track went into the woods. And one in the woods at the crash site.

      @@Circuitsofthepast Not only that but for spectating issues as well I mean look how long it is the people wouldn't see the cars for like what 8 to 10 minutes, so for people watching on television okay but for everyone who were actually at the race they would see the cars for like 5 seconds and then off they go again. If I were at that race I would say "Ugh man what a yawn fest."

    The Poeple at the Nürburgring must have been like: "Sprich Deutsch du Hurensohn!", that's a meme in Germany and means something like "Speak German you son of a prostitute!" It's not meant angry, the problem is that others laugh at Germans trying to speak English so we don't want to even try it. I'm sorry for this.
