DC RUINED Flashpoint Batman

  • Thomas Wayne as Batman is one of the more beloved elements of the Flashpoint storyline, which kicked off the New 52 reboot of DC Comics, as well as the animated adaptation, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, which launched the DCAMU movies. The character was originally expected to appear in the DCEU with The Flash movie, but was instead replaced by Michael Keaton as Batman, along with the inclusion of Supergirl. The character started to decline with his inclusion in Tom King's Batman run. King focused on the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Catwoman and made a controversial ranking of the best Bat-Family fighters, including Nightwing, Red Hood, Cassandra Cain, and many others. Tom King is set to contribute to the creative process in James Gunn's DCU with the new Green Lantern show. The DCU is set to kick off with SUPERMAN. Thomas Wayne's interactions with Bat-Family characters like Batgirl, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne (Robin) show how much the character descended into madness, being an accomplice in the death of Alfred Pennyworth.

I wish Damian was left in his own 666 universe. Extended Wayne family only works for me in containment stories like Flashpoint. The main stories need to survive without opening up huge pandoras boxes into main continuity with characters like Thomas Wayne, Thomas Wayne Jr, Kathy Kane, Bette Kane, Damian Wayne, Helena Wayne, Janan al Ghul….

Dc legit had a chance to play with murderhobo grandpa batman landing in prime timeline. And somehow didnt take the easy gold of going with "Thomas decides he gonna kill every villain in Gothams and then spoil his grandkids". Thomas wants to stab joker and then give Damian a hug before escaping into the night. Which could have been so satisfying, like can you imagine Thomas meeting Jason! Their convos and morality! It coulda be sooo good!

I always assumed Flashpoint Batman was nowhere close to the fighting skill levels of mainline Batman and had to rely on his smarts and weapons instead, which to me made him seem like a pretty cool underdog version of Batman. So of course King would fuck that up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: THEY SHOULD'VE USED MARTHA. Martha Wayne's Joker is SEVERELY underutilized, and putting her in Thomas' place during King's run would've fixed the MAJORITY of the problems involved. Unlike Thomas, her doing all of this would've ABSOLUTELY been in character for her, seeing as she broke even further upon finding out Bruce would become Batman & ALREADY killed her own Alfred to begin with! She even crippled her version of Selina for trying to "replace" Bruce, so she would have FULL reason to go after their relationship here. Not to mention: we NEVER got to see Bruce's reaction to her! All of these times Thomas is brought back, and Martha being his Joker is RARELY brought up, and NEVER around Bruce. Literally EVERYTHING was ripe for a good, gut-wrenching story with Martha being there, all unused to character assassinate Thomas. DC, WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING!?
I will say that the times Thomas was used AFTER Kings run were all surprisingly good, with the reborn Flashpoint timeline being GREAT, but the context behind it is so TRASH.

Finally someone said it. I've been screaming into the void about thomas wayne being ruined by DC for a lone time now. It would have so nice if we have seen him reconnect with his son in a meaningful manner, maybe become a member of the bat family but he has his own city to deal with crime or just have an entire spin of series of him bonding with Bruce and all the other bat family members. A heart to heart with alfred could be poignant since alfred pretty much raised Bruce and the rest of the bat family like Tim, Dick, Jason and Damien. It would also be better if DC didn't kill him of and maybe have him around for a long enough time until he dies of old age.

Tom King is, in many respects, very similar to Peter Milligan: They're good when writing original characters or characters with not a lot of lore or established characterisation. That's why "The Omega Men", "Strange Adventures" or "The Human Target" worked, because they're backstory-less enough for King to be able to add his own touches of PTSD and post-modern philosophy. Obviously he can write characters with pre-established backstories pretty well (Mr. Miracle, the Vision...) but even when he does that he tends to make a lot of stuff up (Such as Victor Mancha's vibranium adiction or Mr. Miracle and Barda being mentally much worse than we thought). But when writing characters like Batman or the Flash, who have very established and detailed psychological profiles and backstories, his retcons and need to add pathos everywhere becomes a hinderance becomes it comes at the cost of proper characterisation

I never was a particular fan of the Flashpoint Batman cause with the fact that Barry's actions created differences both in the past and the future you could basically shape Thomas in whoever you wanted.
Normally i would say that doesn't make any sense that Thomas is so skilled when it comes to combat skills and firearm use but, since Flashpoint changes both the past and future events of a universe, it makes sense in this case.
As for Tom King is a terrible writer, he doesn't write scripts for the characters, he adapts the characters to his scripts.
The only reason why people appreciate stories like Human Target or Strange Adventures is that they don't know anything about these characters, characters like Adam Strange, Mr.Terrific, Ice or even Martian Manhunter.
That's why a lot of people don't like his Batman run or Heroes in Crisis, cause Batman and Wally West are popular and have lots and lots of fans.
Up in the sky was a good story but it had a lot of problems like that entire Superman/Flash run issue that was a series of splash pages flooded with baloons from a 5 year old girl that speaks in a more refined and proper way than Morgan Freeman

Personally, I would've much rathered see Thomas Wayne enter the main timeline and have his story be bonding with the family. Like, imagine how he'd actually react to seeing all of Bruce's children, and how he'd interact with them all. I'd also love to see him interact with Bruce more, and even Alfred given Alfred was the one who basically raised Bruce in the main timeline. I wish we'd got that instead of blatant character assassination.

Get outta here. Why do they hate him so much? Not to say King didn’t do so great stuff. Take Robert Pattinsons Batman (or any younger batman) and compare them to Kevin Conroys (or any OLDER) Batman and you’ll see just how much growth Bruce endures from the moment he puts on the mask. He learns to embrace hope, family and even to trust the people around him. Batman goes from an angry, vengeful vigilante who just wants to hurt people to a father and friend who has faith he can save Gotham from itself

I get he didn’t want Bruce to keep the Cowl, but I highly doubt the guy would let Alfred, the man who raised his child when he died, to die such a horrible death. Lately, I can understand why people prefer Marvel over DC. And I’m not just talking about the movies.

So Thomas Wayne wanted batman to stop being batman and be happy….yet he…stops the wedding between Selina and Bruce while other characters believe their marriage would lead to him stop being batman…him being left on the altar leads batman to further spiral and become worst which results to him beating Mr freeze to death.
Then after that he allows Dick Greyson to basically die furthering making batman spiral and getting rid of his happiness
puts him in nightmare scenarios that don’t discourage bruce from being batman by saying see how happy you’d be without batman but just does random nightmares
then after the desert experiment doesn’t work he becomes the batman of evil gotham and decides to…kill Bruce’s father figure instead of just killing all criminals who’d make it necessary for him to be batman…
like his goal and his actions contradict each other

Because Tom King served in the military, I think he believes he's Batman. It's like Frank Miller asked him, "If Batman could be anyone, why does he have to be you?" Also, He's a simp. And that's how he wrote Batman.

The animated flashpoint film is one of the best dc movies of all time.
Like I just don't get how if Manga and Anime can do this, why can't Americans comics. And NO, you don't need to go back and do all the older stories but picking one of the best runs of the characters would give you some of the best animated TV and movies out there.
Still waiting for a faithful darkest night/brightest day movie series
Also an animated Marvel Civil War would be fun

While it was terribly executed, I believe that they could have made putting Thomas Batman in the mainline stuff at least tolerable. Like, having him remind Bruce of his desires but Bruce wanting Thomas to have a normal life like before he was Batman refuses to do so leading Thomas to have a discussion with Alfred, his grandson, and "grandsons" about how to convince Bruce to give up the mantle where Alfred would, as only he would, say in a sarcastic style tone that he tried at first but like his father, he's as stubborn as a mountain in such matters. Thomas would end the talk looking at Damian asking if they want Bruce to ever be happy and if they'd be willing to do whatever it takes placing a look of contemplation on the four brothers which Dick, Jason, and Tim would almost immediately decide that Bruce is happiest as Batman while Damian would be 50/50 on it as he would want his entire family to be happy and somewhat normal. Meanwhile Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian would tell Selina that Bruce deserves his share of happiness and she makes him happy while telling her that the marriage wouldn't weaken him as he'd have more of a reason to be Batman and have the wedding happen anyway, after some time, have Bruce and Selina have a little baby who they would then name Helena.

they could have easily saved it too by having Alfred’s death be too far a move for Thomas Wayne and he could betray Bane and his group. Then they could’ve decided if they really wanted Alfred to die or be saved by Thomas.

To be honest, I would have been interested to see what DC would have done with Flashpoint Batman if he actually come with Batman and Flash during the events of The Button. What kind of relationship would he have with Bruce and the rest of the Batfamily. He was from a different universe, but he was still Thomas Wayne. And maybe, after a little while, his wish for Bruce to stop being Batman could have actually happened, after Bruce marries Selina.
But unfortunately, this isn't what happened. Such a shame. His whole character have been completely ruined with City of Bane.

    2.
Bruce cause nobody on the list has been able to actually beat him yet besides dick. It’s only said to be potentially
    3.
Jason cause he can fight off dick Tim and cass and get away from them. Jason also has been able to go 1v1 with Bruce in the past and only gets beaten when he’s at a disadvantage like how Bruce burns away his jacket of gadgets while he still has his own or when he violates him during the outlaws run while jason is mentally not there.
    4.
Cass becaise of being the guru of fighting and the constant glaze
    5. Tim because of he’s still able to beat Damian
    6. Damian
    And the rest idgaf tbh.🤷🏿‍♂️
Keep in mind I’m a casual so this is just from a casual mindset.
