    Ashes + fat = soap.
The lye, made from ash, was diluted, so was safe to use. It helped break down accumulated sebum, pomades and dressings, and any gunk that got on hair in daily life.
This is basically how soaps and shampoos work today.
This is also similar to how laundry was done, without beating and boiling water 😄

"Washing your hair was not a daily task by the way."
Nor should it be nowadays, unless you have excessively oily hair. Daily washing of hair actually strips your hair of the natural oils that keep your hair and scalp moisturized. You actually should be washing your hair about 2-4 times a week at the most depending on how oily your hair gets between washes. The longer it takes for your hair to get too oily between washes, the less often you need to wash your hair.

MizzKittyBichon For african americans we wash our hair one a week or so. Our hair doesn't produce as much sebum as other ethnicities do so washing our hair more than once a week can cause it to get very dry.

    • @MizzKittyBichon
      @MizzKittyBichon 6 лет назад +83

Yes! We should definitely take other races and ethnic groups into consideration as well. Now that I think about it, it does seems like most beauty and hair tips are geared towards white women. (And I'm a mostly white woman myself.)

Honestly my hair is so dry it never gets oily. :p I have straight/wavy blonde hair, medium thickness. It tangled easily. I did the “no shampoo” challenge for almost a year, and “washed” my hair once a week with warm water (I.e. I would massage my scalp under the warm water). I’d do the scalp massage if I went to the gym that day also. I also made sure to brush my hair a lot throughout the day, especially the scalp, so any sebum made its way down my hair shaft. It’s the nicest my hair has ever been and it didn’t smell bad. But tbh, when I switched to the no shampoo challenge, I was only washing my hair with shampoo maybe twice a week, otherwise my scalp would be extremely dry. No Idea why western culture feels the need to wash their hair daily.

Thanks to for the interesting video and good representation! The wearing of hats, caps, coifs, hoods and veils and braided hairstyles the late medieval period would have helped keep hair free of dirt and keep any strong bodily odours private. It would have reduced the need for frequent washing too. In the West, probably since the marketing of detergent based shampoos, the general fashion is for squeaky clean, loose hair, and this fashion was not the norm in the late middle ages, except for the very young. That's my theory, anyway. A plaited medieval hairstyle is not only easier to style on slightly oily hair than clean hair but looks better too. Medieval people of means had access to beautiful smelling natural cosmetics, made from herbs, flowers and spices. These smelled wonderful, and these would have made a lovely perfume to hide any unpleasant odours, much as we use them today.

    • @druidriley3163
      @druidriley3163 6 лет назад +4

urchin - actually perfumes were very expensive in the Middle Ages, only the wealthy could afford them. The best the poor people could do is wear fragrant flowers or herbs.

    • @SoundShinobiYuki

I have super fine hair, so styling anything into it- especially if it's freshly washed- without an industrial-sized can of product is an utter disaster! (And, combine the fact that I also keep my bangs short, which gets them greasier faster, I can only get away with shampooing every other day, max every 3 if it's winter and I'm staying in)
That said, I'm also a historical re-enactor. While my hair's not long enough yet to do authentic styles (I need to use extensions hidden under veils and such, my braids barely reach my shoulders), I did find an interesting recipe for what was effectively a hair gel in the 14th century. Flaxseed gel with some floral scenting made for a strong hair gel like you would use today, that both smelled very pleasant and made damn near INDESTRUCTIBLE braids! The conclusion was that "women either almost never washed their hair so they'd have lots of control over it for these braids, OR, they coated themselves liberally in this hair gel".
18th century hairstyling also used what was effectively a self-cleaning cycle of pomade and powder. The pomade (made from animal tallow and scented with, again, flowers and herbs and such) was combed in and provided volume, moisturized the hair and made it easy to style up. Powder (made generally from ultra-fine wheat and corn starches and tinted into a desired colour with a variety of ingredients) then absorbed the excess grease from the pomade and scalp oils and made the fashionable pale-haired look- and then the next day, a dose of powder would be worked through to absorb and comb off excess pomade and the pomade-powder cycle would start again.

People have different routines for their hair, some wash their hair every morning and some wash their hair once a week. Just because it is different from your hair routine doesn't mean it's "disgusting" or "dirty" just different is all.

Eggs and water contain a buttload of chemicals. A chemical isn't a toxin, water is literally a chemical and we can't live without it. Have a look at what a pure natural strawberry contains: jameskennedymonash.wordpress.com/2014/08/22/ingredients-of-an-all-natural-strawberry/
And this is natural eggs: jameskennedymonash.wordpress.com/2014/01/05/ingredients-of-an-all-natural-egg/
Your problem isn't chemicals, but the harshness of the cleaning agents as well as that your hair loses protein easily (same with my hair). You could literally use 100% natural cleansers like gall soap or pine tree liquid oil soap and it would destroy your hair not because they aren't natural, but because they are too strong and harsh. Don't forget that cyanide, asbestos, strychnine, ricin, and many more are 100% natural, yet deadly. Vitamins are chemicals. Chemicals are not good, they are not bad. They are what life is made out of.

In response to the clearly distressed person who says I am blaming the victims of oily skin and oily scalps. Nothing could be further from the truth I have suffered from both in the past. They plagued me in my teens and I had acne flare-ups right into my 30s. Firstly, why people have oily scalps varies. A general problem with over production of sebum is not why most people create excessive oils in the scalp. Most people simply just over wash. I do sympathise with those who have an oily skin condition generally because I did. However, despite my troubles with spots and blackheads in my youth cutting back on the frequency of hair washing and changing shampoos from time to time or using lavender ones worked for me and my hair was nolonger slick and lank. My comments were meant to be helpful not hurtful.

Well with the dead skin cells that naturally slough off and mix with the sebum, I'd say the stuff that makes hair look and feel like it's been dipped in a chip pan is grease, not oil.

southernlight6 FALSE. Oil and grease are both lipids, as are all plastics. Oils usually come from plants and are liquid at room temperature while greases are usually animal derived and solid at room temperature but there are exceptions to the rule. There are only two ways to " add thickener" to a lipid, one is to add hydrogen as in partially hydrogenated ( margarine, shortening etc.) or add Lye causing saponification, as in making soap. The lye solution would saponify the copious sebum on the hair and scalp making a weak but effective soapy rinse that would pull the oils from the hair.

I don't know why people are disagreeing with the comment that the less often you wash your hair the less greasy it is, the examples they give actually prove rather than disprove this. Honestly, saying leaving your hair for two days means it's greasier if you don't do it every day is proof you wash it so often your scalp is producing a lot of sebum. To get it to drop to lower levels of sebum production you have to tolerate it being greasy in the interim period in which you don't wash it as often and after a few weeks it will actually start to produce lower levels of sebum. Conditions like dandruff and dry sensitive scalps can be exacerbated by over washing. So it's wise to avoid it and better for your wallet and the environment. A friend of mine dropped from washing their hair twice a day to washing it twice weekly. Her dandruff went away. If you don't work in a dirty, dusty environment or a smoky one your hair won't get dirty quickly and sebum and brushing also get rid of dirt.

Because it's just not true. That's right up there with saying that if you cut your hair often it'll grow faster or if you shave a lot your hair with grow back thicker.
If it were true, then frequent washing would be a solution for very dry scalp. It wouldn't change as hormones shifted. Do you realize that people with oily hair also have oily face, backs, etc?
It's a myth that stinks of blaming the victim. Some people really do just produce more oil than others. I've never heard of a person with a real problem 'cure' themselves by dropping the frequency of their hair washing.
I've battled with oil since I hit puberty. When I hit menopause, that shifted dramatically to dry skin/scalp. It changed because my hormonal profile changed. When my doctor gave me hormone supplements... shocker. My oily complexion came back and I had to go back to daily washing.
People with this issue do get frustrated when others lecture us with a 'here's your simple cure,' when they have no idea what they're talking about. Just like people with acne get irritated when an idiot confidently tells them that they're eating too much chocolate or a skinny person who's really fighting to put on weight is told that they just need to eat a sandwich.

Francesca Taphophilia You'll find that if you aren't using shampoos and conditioners that build up on the hair, the only parts that really need the lye water are the scalp and the hair immediately near the scalp. For the rest of the hair, dilute the water that drips through/off your hair with enough water to soak the rest of your hair. Then rinse out. Or don't even bother soaking the rest of your hair, just make sure it gets rinsed in the rinse. Some of the water from the scalp area will be rinsed through it.

@@knoxvillehermitfreemoviesm3625 and you shouldn't :-) That people never bathed is a myth that has been spread in historism at the beginning of the 20th century. Yes, in the 17th -19th century, that was the case for most big cities, that had mostly to do with a wrong understanding of medicine and the spread of several diseases like the plague, tuberculosis, cholera etc. that caused a lot of insecurity and fear in people.
But in medieval times, people were in fact very aware of their daily hygiene. They would wash themselves daily with a washbowl and washcloth and some lye or soap and then went to the bathhouses for a proper bath 1-2 times a week, more if it was a person of status that had their own bathtubs at home. Also washing and changing clothing regularly was a common practice and we know from moral writers of the time that body odor and dirty clothing was frowned upon by society.
One tool that probably every household had, was a hygiene set including a spoon for earwax, a scraper for cleaning fingernails and tweezers for removing facial hair. Shaving was also common for most men and some women of higher status even shaved or epilated their body hair.
For people of higher status, more measures could be taken like dyeing hair, applying body creams and rose water, musk or other scents and makeup.
We have more videos on the topic of medieval hygiene in our playlist.

I noticed that with time, the longer I withhold washing my hair the less greasy it gets in the future. I use to wash every three days, due to my hair getting so oily that it weight it down. Now-a-days I only need to wash it once a week or maximum once every 9 days. I trained my scalp to produce less serum by withholding the wash longer. My hair seems to grow better this way too. I also added a filter to remove the chlorine and other chemicals in the water that exists out of the shower head. The first time I noticed less oil was when I stopped washing my hair for two weeks. At first it was overproducing serum, naturally, but after day 15 it seems as if the scalp stopped producing serum or reduced the amount. After that wash my hair didn't need another wash till after 7 days. It was such a nice feeling not needing to wash so often. I do use conditioner at the ends, but very little of it. I saved so much money this way. I don't need to use so much hair oil or leave-in-conditioner as before. My hair growth became more noticeable.
By the way, washing your hair bend over forward like that is a great way to washing hair. It stimulates the follicles, causing it to grow better. I use to have really back receding hairline till I started to wash my hair bend forward. It does take time, but it works. Bending over forward under a shower head really wakes up the roots that are there. I don't know if it works on actual full blown bald spots, but I had seen the difference over the years that I have more hair now than I did as a teen and it is due to washing my hair differently and with cold water.

SC when I’m in season (I play soccer) I wash my hair everyday because I will not go to bed with a greasy, sweaty scalp. My hair is still very healthy.

I have fine oily hair. While I don't wash my hair every single day, I do wash it every day I'm going to be in public, and if that's 5 days in a row so be it. If I don't wash my hair, it looks dirty by American standard.
It's like shaving: it's a visual standard we have set as a society, it's not necessarily needed, but it's expected. I could go a week or more been washing, it's not dirty as I don't often go places where my hair could get dirty, but the oils build up quickly on my head and, as I said, appear dirty..

I’m a guy...and I’m construction worker...I adore history and antiques “why I’m here” however !! Since my childhood hero was Steven Seagal
I’ve been growing my hair long in a ponytail 😭 but last night I noticed my hair is breaking BADLY where I put the fabric coated rubber band.
Until this comment section I thought shampoo every day was GOOD!,
It’s bad!?! 😫 would using shampoo less give me stronger hair ?!?

    • @WatermelonPeppermint

@@andrewgarratt5191 that depends on what kind of shampoo you're using and what kind of hair you have, and what your after products are. Try using a sulfate free shampoo, sulfates are harsh detergents and make your hair dry. You might wanna follow up with a silicone free conditoner on the length (not the roots!) As well. I think reddits haircare science board would be helpful to you. Also, don't use the tiny hair scrunchies that are tight. Use big soft loose ones and go around a few times. What kind of hair do you have?

Yes, the point of the no-poo method is to break that cycle by taking certain measures.

It would've been easier to fill a medium sized bowl to wash then use another bowl to rinse. Lastly use a wide tooth comb to coat the hair with the grease conditioner

So, I have a question of what should I do with my hair lol. I'm a boy so I have short hair, and it's curly, but I live in the equator basically and it's very hot and humid here (we normally take at least 2 showers per day, and I do that too. Sometimes 3). But my hair is really dry and coarse, what is the best hair care for this situation?

Walter Drinker that’ll only make it worse by washing off the oil and making your small make more to compensate and oily skin doesn’t directly correlate to oily hair

Well, yes, at least on their weekends. We are Living Historians. That means we spend our free time in open air museums showing the visitors how people lived back then in as much detail as possible.

@@ig14tesjahrhundert79 that's really neat. I can't imagine how different & difficult it must be to cut out all ties to modern life & live the way things were back in the medieval times. So if I may ask, what is lye & how does it work to keep hair clean? & what does the wine stems do to help?

    • @ig14tesjahrhundert79
      @ig14tesjahrhundert79  5 лет назад

Not difficult at all actually, but very relaxing. It is like a holiday, leaving your phone and computer and all the stress behind and just be in the present.
lye is a basic liquid. you could make a base from simply water and soap, people back then just added ashes to water. if you added oil to the water and ashes, you could make soap actually. it could really be any ashes from any kind of wood, we think that the wine stems are some kind of supersticious thing.
