  • This week, I am sharing an article from "Beauty a Duty, The Art of Keeping Young" (1915) that goes into detail about where and when to have your hair shampooed. While not technically written in the Edwardian era, this does have the feel of an earlier advice article and most of this information would have been applicable to that earlier decade.

      Isn't is great? Gloria Swanson's character in that film is supposed to be super rich so she has an absolutely stunning bathroom.

      It's from "Male and Female" (1919). It's not one of my favourites just as a movie, but it has some beautiful clips in terms of decor and fashion.

    Just to clarify: I didn't mean to make it sound like an hour long shampoo process wasn't a lot of work with my joke in the intro (although I think that hour was meant to include drying time, which wouldn't have been active work). I just found the wording amusing where it's said it may be tiring if "the hair be heavy", as if lifting the hair was the main difficulty!

    This was fun to learn. I personally wash my ethnic cruly wavy hair once every two or three weeks, yes my hair doesn't get oily. It is very dry and I have to add Mositurizer Lotion on the ends daily..... I do messages for a week every day once a month, inversion method, and that routine works. I currently have my natural hair at 23 inches, almost my desired length. I am doing an experiment to not cut my hair until March 2022, I have 3 months in and so far it looks good. Anyways love your videos 💕

    An hour of a scalp massage would tire most people and if it was your own head the upward position would definitely be worse! I just find it odd that it was common to go to a professional shampooist at all. Were perms etc and other styling treatments popular yet? Or was it just a shampoo parlor? Honestly spending an hour in a comfy chair with someone massaging my head sounds like a lovely treat although probably prohibitively expensive now!

      Haha, well massage portion wouldn't have been the whole hour. It was more like 20 minutes or less (although that still sounds nice!). I actually used to go to a lady who did proper head massages. I think it was about $35 for half an hour? I didn't go regularly but it was a nice occasional treat and helped with my headaches.
      Perms in the modern sense wouldn't really have become a thing until later, but women did go to have their hair waved or set (typically with heated tongs). Having the hair singed was also a popular treatment. Plus there would have often been other non-hair related treatments such a facials :)

    i wish someone would jump on the head spa trend, asmr and vintage trends to propose the service of edwardian/victorian/georgian hair cleansing as done by a shampooer or dresser (depending on the period) had i been interested in haircare on a professional side i would have given it a go

    Listen, if the whole thing is supposed to take an hour, you bet it's gonna be tiring - you either have your hands up or your head down most of that time, and that's legitimately strenuous. Ngl, I've had to take breaks just while making a moderately complicated hairdo lol

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  3 года назад +3

      I think it's just the way it's phrased that struck me as funny. If it was referring to keeping the arms up then wouldn't it be tiring for everyone not just ladies with "heavy hair"? The phrase "if the hair be heavy" brings to my mind ladies struggling to lift their long locks (which if your hair is that heavy has to be causing some neck issues right?!).

    • @Cationna
      @Cationna 3 года назад +1

      @@TheLongHairedFlapper oh no, it's definitely funny 😁 and that's an excellent point. Btw tho, I've heard people with knee-length hair, and/or thick long hair, complain about headaches and neck pains and strain! And I remember an actress practising dance with her normal hair and then getting extensions for the shoot and having to basically reconfigure how to do hairflips with it, and getting sore muscles where she never used to before! I've always found it fascinating, and something to console myself with when I regret not being able to grow longer than my waist 😢😢 😉

      I think they mean smog and pollution, i think its hard to imagine how much pollution there was in the citys before. All heating from coal, no sort of filter of that smoke, heavy metals etc, not to mention tobacco smoking everywhere.
      I mean, spend a day in london now and your snot turns black, but it used to be worse. London smog was pure pollution.
