I need to say this. I am a wheelchair user. I will never, ever sew or make dresses, but I watch your channel, Rachel and it calms my anxiety and makes me super happy each week. You are indeed a gem. This wheelchair user stans!
I find that even on days when I can’t sew, I still really love watching CosTube sewing content. I do sew most days now- though due to disability I find sitting at a machine extremely painful (though slightly better now I have a machine with hand controls). So I discovered that hand sewing was actually much easier for me. And I can do it in bed- which is good because that’s where I spend most of my time. A big digital high five to you from another wheelchair user 🥰 Also, if you are interested in history bounding (you don’t need to sew to be interested in it), there’s Facebook group for Historybounding Spoonies. It’s a nice place to spend some time, if you’re interested.
I think there's a youtube sewist who is also a wheelchair user! I haven't watched her in a while so idk if she still uploads regularly, but her name is Annika Victoria. She's pretty cool

I feel like the quoting thing has always been something humans do. Like I swear, L. M. Montgomery has her characters tossing in random poetry quotes all the frickin time.
I was wondering about that the other day - like why did they all know so much poetry. But if it's like people now quoting films, it's more understandable 😂
I quote everything I can remember properly. It's very circular, the topics of conversation and the flow throughout history. Don't eat me! I know the vocabulary changes, but people tend to talk about the same types of things, ie: what's new in the world, what did the neighbor do, how am I going to get through the garbage heap that my life seems to be right now, how do I deal with this hard problem with my loved one. It all occured as part of the human condition. Quoting things is a reminder that it's not just oneself that has to handle this situation ever in the entire history of the world. You're not alone with this problem or this thought process. Everything is relatable on some level.
Hey you’re doing AMAZING in the volume department. You do know all ya girls back then were cheating with tons of fake hair. If any of them had something to say about your lack of volume, you could slay every last one of them by revealing that 100% of your hairstyle is your own protein strands shooting from your own scalp, thank you very much.
Honey, when I tell you I RAN here!!! I greatly appreciate your addition of Black Victorian photos to showcase that these styles could work with more than just Caucasian hair 🖤
They usually work better on natural black hair than they do on Caucasian hair, to be honest. And let’s not forget that white peoples have been culturally appropriating black hairstyles for centuries at this point- that “hedgehog” hairstyle of the 1780s is “inspired” by the Afros of black people.
@@katherinemorelle7115 Yes! Same with some modern updos too. I once did an updo on natural black hair that I'd done a bunch of times on caucasian hair. On Caucasian hair it often took 45 minutes to accomplish IF the hair had a mind to cooperate. Natural black hair? Five minutes. All that lovely texture helps so much!
Rachel not bothering to touch up her roots prior to filming a video solely focused on hair + sponsored by a hair products label, is exactly my vibe during lockdown.
I mean, obviously we'd much rather she *didn't* die, because we want her around for a very long time, but upon mine honour, sworn with a hand upon my bookshelves - we would pay such a tribute to our fallen mistress that the stars themselves would gaze and ask ... "now what's going down here?"
She just has such a pretty face like she doesn't ugly in any of these styles! Sure a lot of the styles are unusual and kind of crazy looking but she doesn't look ugly or bad in any of them!
Helloooo! My husband is watching with me again, and when you were talking about "hair goals" he said 'what kind of goals do ring wraiths have? Nazguls!' and I felt the need to share that with you. Hobbit Dad humor.
The vibes of your videos are just always so immaculate. Idk how to explain it, your editing just feels like a warm cup of hot chocolate on a cold winters night, and the smell of a pumpkin spice candle and ✨ dark academia ✨. I absolutely love your content, Rachel!
From what I have learned, natural hair actually works a LOT better for many historical styles, especially from the 1770s through to the 1910s. And in fact, the famous “hedgehog” style Marie Antoinette so loved was “inspired” by (read: appropriated from) black women with Afros. There’s a lovely Facebook page called Melinated Maidens that has a few posts with historical black women, rocking their amazing hair- some of the pictures I recognised in this video are on some of those posts. I’ve also seen a bunch on Pinterest.
Coarse black hair is sooo much better for braiding and styles that require volume. My hair doesn’t fall out as much from braids because it’s so coarse. Plus black people existed in the 1800s and were not all slaves, so of course black hair works for these!
Anyone who's actually observed or interacted with crows knows that they're funky lil birds who like to screw around and they're super intelligent and sweet.
For some reason as Rachel was doing the ‘finest who’ hairstyle (1830s) I had an image of her husband walking in and just being like ‘eh, she’s at it again 🤷🏻♀️’ 😂
I'm reading Anna Karenina right now, and there is a scene where Kitty's dad petting her on the had and says 'with these hairstyles you never know if you touch your daughter's hair or it's fake' 🤣 You definetely need some fake hair for the 70s)
I think about this every time I see a crow, to the point where if I pass one in earshot I have to give a quick "hello sir, respectfully" lest generations of crows hold some kind of grudge against me
It’s Rachel’s super power. I was shocked she even had an idea of how to make any one of those styles. I was like “how the hell is she going to do that“. But she always managed something pretty close.

This is random but as someone who grew up super sheltered and not understanding pop culture references and constantly feeling like I was missing the inside joke, I really appreciated you looping us in on your tiktok reference!
I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, Rachel. The first two look great! I'm impressed with the progress you made doing these crazy up-dos by yourself. I wouldn't have the arm strength to braid my hair like that by myself~
Such a good point about the messy hair! I think it's so important to remember that there have always been regular people who just muddle through. Just because the paintings look immaculate doesn't mean that was always reality!
No you're absolutely right about painting, painters look at hairstyles and then straight-up just make shit up I was a hairdresser for four years with a good eye for updos and looks at half of those were still just like. "What is happening"
This was GREAT! I want to see an infographic of all of them together in one picture like you were showing the others maybe wearing appropriate costume. Honestly, Rachel, you looked adorable in all of them.
this is why there was a huge market in false hair pieces. Just like buying extensions now but often already braided. You also saved your own hair from when you brushed it out and kept it in hair receivers to make your own add ins. The best false hair often came from girls who had their hair cut off when they joined convents and was really expensive!
I have been looking forward to this all day! Edit: _Shhh...._ 1820's aren't gonna tell Rachel they used hair pieces to plump up their gravity-defying hair bows!

The issue is that it’s now quite difficult to find nice hair pieces for red hair. They have them for blondes and brunettes, but redheads? You basically gotta buy human hair in blonde and dye it yourself. Which is bloody expensive. Still, that’s my plan.
There's a line in Anna Karenina about this, where the father guy is bemoaning that if you pat your daughter on the head you don't even touch her hair any more, it's all hair pieces.
My great grandma was born in 1888. She gave to me when she passed away these really cool items that my great great grandma passed to her etc. They were pieces of wooden spoons wrapped in old fabric to twist the hair around they would take the fabric and the the hair up for curls. I’m pretty sure I’ve said it myself a few times.
Bernadette, patron saint of historybounders and those who hand sew their garments.
Didn't all of us?
Considering a lot of these styles were accomplished using extensions made out of human hair or horsehair you did a fantastic job. Plus the fact you did it all in one day is pretty cool too...or almost one day.
I imagine hair was easier to style, too, when it was washed so much less.
You should read "Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners". You would appreciate the humor of it and the general facts.
I love that book, it's a mooood
*one strand of hair out of place*
Rachel: "Darcy would never love me"
Girl, have you seen you???
A big digital high five to you from another wheelchair user 🥰
Also, if you are interested in history bounding (you don’t need to sew to be interested in it), there’s Facebook group for Historybounding Spoonies. It’s a nice place to spend some time, if you’re interested.
I think there's a youtube sewist who is also a wheelchair user! I haven't watched her in a while so idk if she still uploads regularly, but her name is Annika Victoria. She's pretty cool
@@loudevanneaux661 Retro Claude is another disabled Costuber, who uses mobility aids when needed. She uses canes, crutches and a wheelchair. She also has an AMAZING video about sewing while disabled, and it’s one that I go back to every now and then to ground myself.
❤❤❤❤❤😁
'Bernadette, be my strength" is such a mood.
YES
I think I missed it, when did she say that ? :)

@@rosalindchang7039 great thank you !
I would love that quote on a bumper sticker for a Harley Davidson hog.... Yeah, this is aimed at you Tom... 🍄🍄
My four year old just wandered through, stared at you between hairstyles, and declared “She looks like Rapunzel!!!” And I thought you should know.💚
Omg toooooooo cute I loved rapunzel as a kid
Hey you’re doing AMAZING in the volume department. You do know all ya girls back then were cheating with tons of fake hair. If any of them had something to say about your lack of volume, you could slay every last one of them by revealing that 100% of your hairstyle is your own protein strands shooting from your own scalp, thank you very much.
Honey, when I tell you I RAN here!!!
I greatly appreciate your addition of Black Victorian photos to showcase that these styles could work with more than just Caucasian hair 🖤
Yes, this !!!
@@katherinemorelle7115 The fact you can tell so many bullshit in one comment and have 15 likes is appalling. 😑

Thank you for showing portraits of women of color wearing Victorian hairstyles..beautiful.. you are a joy to watch and inspiring on so many levels!
"But it kind of just made them straight up green"
My mind immediately went to Anne of Green Gables; when Anne dyed her hair.
Phew, its not just me
Rachel not bothering to touch up her roots prior to filming a video solely focused on hair + sponsored by a hair products label, is exactly my vibe during lockdown.
Isnt it illegal to look flawless in any way? Like u just play around with ur looks and still look gorg. why cant i be this effortlessly pretty?
I agree!!
Same.❤
I think that every time I try anything with my hair. Rachel is amazing!
RACHEL: "If I break my neck and die, know that it was to bring you content"

I mean, obviously we'd much rather she *didn't* die, because we want her around for a very long time, but upon mine honour, sworn with a hand upon my bookshelves - we would pay such a tribute to our fallen mistress that the stars themselves would gaze and ask ... "now what's going down here?"
@@petrastedman669 😄 That was VERY Eloquently stated!!!! Well done👏👏👏
If you break your neck that doesn’t mean die!! 🤣🤣🤣
She just has such a pretty face like she doesn't ugly in any of these styles! Sure a lot of the styles are unusual and kind of crazy looking but she doesn't look ugly or bad in any of them!
When you said that 87% of your social skills come from referencing movies, I felt that.
I second this!
@nonbinary plant: Yes!!, and don't forget baked (and braided) warm-from-the-oven, bread.
That's pretty darn accurate!

Rachel: this could work with every hair
Me: I'm black. I doubt it
Rachel: here's some black people
Me: o-oh... I'll just uhhhh.. Shut up now
From what I have learned, natural hair actually works a LOT better for many historical styles, especially from the 1770s through to the 1910s.
All these styles reminded me of curly versions of 90's black hair shows.
Of course our hair can do this lol.
I’ve always had fine, thin hair and had a difficult time doing any hairstyles. That’s why I shaved it. Unrelated, Terry McGinnis - 😁👍🏽👏🏽🦇

I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, Rachel. The first two look great! I'm impressed with the progress you made doing these crazy up-dos by yourself. I wouldn't have the arm strength to braid my hair like that by myself~
Killing that “Gibson Girl” look! Love it also 1830’s s when hairdos were extra EXTRA. Points for taking on that hair volcano
Hahaha this is a super funny behind the scenes professional beef.
Edit:
_Shhh...._ 1820's aren't gonna tell Rachel they used hair pieces to plump up their gravity-defying hair bows!

Rachel truly pulled a Anne of Green Gables when she says green roots
I found out a secret when looking through old catalogues: hair pieces! Those women bought braids, buns, and curl hair pieces!!! They cheated!!
The issue is that it’s now quite difficult to find nice hair pieces for red hair. They have them for blondes and brunettes, but redheads? You basically gotta buy human hair in blonde and dye it yourself.
Which is bloody expensive. Still, that’s my plan.
Sounds like things never change

There's a line in Anna Karenina about this, where the father guy is bemoaning that if you pat your daughter on the head you don't even touch her hair any more, it's all hair pieces.
I cracked up for some reason when I read this comment and idek why 😂😂😂
" Just keep telling yourself. You're the finest Who in Whoville." I lost it. lol
My great grandma was born in 1888. She gave to me when she passed away these really cool items that my great great grandma passed to her etc. They were pieces of wooden spoons wrapped in old fabric to twist the hair around they would take the fabric and the the hair up for curls. Also they would use sheep's wool to stuff the hair. I still have these treasures. I adore you
