I’m now officially 0.03% of the way through watching The Big Three
The Netflix One Piece Live Action covers the entire first 50+ episodes in under eight hours. Pros: fast, everyone is very hot. Cons: you miss out on the extremely catchy opening theme from the original.
I'll admit I haven't seen any of them either. I have watched the 2011 Hunter x Hunter and the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist, however, and I am up to date on Chainsaw Man, so I can't say I'm *completely* out of the loop on mainstream shounen. But it's not really my arena. I like stuff that airs at midnight on weird otaku channels. And Precure. :P
I mean, One Piece hasn’t finished so no hurry there.
It’s best when taken arc by arc like television seasons of various lengths. Divide them up for your own pace.
Royce read Bleach and wasn't a fan, but otherwise we don't have any association with or attachment to The Big Three either. Although recently, SEVERAL folks have recommended One Piece to us to watch through the lens of antifascist ideology and also...potential AroAce rep? We are confused but intrigued by these readings.
I appreciate the discussion on some of the negatives that come from fans being so involved in the industry. There’s a similar situation with actors and others involved in the process.
I really think the best results come from having a mix of people. People who didn’t grow up in this space can bring a fresh voice, which I sometimes feel is lacking in modern stuff. It’s also a great way to check some of those bad habits that come from aping what we watched as kids.
Here from Red Bard- only 20 minutes in but i feel like I HAVE to leave a comment about how cool this video is. I think a lot of us younger fans forget how hard this stuff was back in the day, and I appreciate your own anecdotes as well as the interviews with other people who were there at the beginning of fan translating! I think its important that you're recording this stuff, or it'll eventually become lost history

21:01 - An interesting point about Foreignization that I read in "Is that a Fish in Your Ear?" (really recommend this book for approachable and entertaining topics about translation and translation theory), is that 'Decorative' or 'Selective' Foreignization only really works when the source culture and target culture aren't that foreign from each other. The example they gave was how, in English, if you were translating a work from French, set in Paris, your anglophone audience is presumably familiar enough to recognize things like "Monsieur", "Madame", "Mademoiselle". But if you were translating a work from say, Hindi and set in India, the three ways of saying "you" (tu, tum, ap - intimate, friendly, formal), if you left it in Hindi, your audience wouldn't know the significance of it. Heck, they wouldn't even know if it's Hindi or Bengali or anything.
Another example, they gave is quote: "In order to even notice that this sentence from German a foreignizing translation is have you to know that in German subordinate clauses at the end of their sentences put. Otherwise it is comical, clumsy and so forth- not 'German' at all."
The part about localizers being "unprofessional" gets me because fans think they're punching up at "the man" when their "man" is working under "the man." Not "for" but "under."
Furthermore, you can't just throw a punch and expect them to not defend or hit back. The Internet has desensitized too many into believing that they're just typing up words and that they won't mean a think even with a precise target.
Basically, creators should talk back. Translators should talk back. Those getting abuse shouldn't have to take it. The only ones who see them as stuck up are those giving the abuse because it's not abuse to them. It's righteous retribution.

Man, this is probably the best hour-long video I've seen! Thank you for doing all this, explaining so many facets of the industry.
What a great video. I thought this was going to be just a history of anime in the West but it was so comprehensive about history, culture, people, language, economics and feels.
I really like how you asked hard questions to us as fans and offered how we can help keep what we love from being heartless.
I bought the first Evangelion DVD box set for 150 or so and that was a bargain. It is amazing how accessible it is now but we are taking this era for granted.
I know! It's like, on the one hand, I wish the streaming services had free with ads options so it would be more accessible to more people, but when you consider how expensive everything used to be, it's a real steal.
Finally finished the video and you did a such a great job! The AI stuff is definitely bleak and it feels weird rooting for companies like Netflix with everything going on since they are one of the few who credit their translators and use unionized dub casts.
It has been disappointing seeing previous companies who were great at crediting localizers suddenly shift to silence and when called out they just said "We will have full credits once the home video version is released" We will see what happens when that first "home video release" shows up at the end of the month but even then there can be different credits between the broadcast version we may never know about.
It felt like we almost became close a few years ago to TLs finally getting their name out there but people will were once praising someone's work but one dumb thing can completely cause fans to flip their judgment on someone. It has been hard for fans to reach out to translators lately the last few seasons and I don't know why they can't just release the credit as part of the dub credits when those are released or something as additional staff.

did anyone else tear up when the Otaku Twin Sister came home and hugged her onee-sama 😭 my older sister was the one who got me into anime at the early age of just 7ish years old. she grew out of it like a year later (just a phase for her lol) but i remained rabidly into anime, i even had a copy of Giles’ The Anime Companion that i read over and over again. she saw my terrible late-2000’s weeaboo nonsense (like screaming “KAWAIIIII!!!” and saying i wanted to be a mangaka when i grew up lol). she chaperoned me on my first anime convention trip, even though she wasn’t interested anymore… i dunno, that side of My Otaku Twin Sister really hit for me. right in the heart. thanks for another beautiful video, Sarah Moon ;_;
The premise of My Otaku Twin Sister only really works if the sisters love each other. Otherwise it's just a bunch of petty whining and fighting back and forth. (Your sister sounds great--my brother cosplayed as Nakago with us at AX, but we had to pay his way and make all sorts of other concessions 😅
The part about localization through the US is a sore point for me, as too many series I grew up watching were dubbed to Hebrew based on American dubs: _Digimon Adbenture_ through Saban, _Yu-Gi-Oh!_ through 4Kids, can’t recall others. (Some weren’t, like _Dragonball Z_ and _Cardcaptor Sakura_ for example.)
Also, Netflix has the nasty habit of having translations of non-English media into other languages based on the English translation, and if you know all three you can definitely see the game of telephone that happens in these translations, with subtleties that can be translated from, say, Japanese to Hebrew being lost because they couldn’t be translated right to English.
(A glaring non-Israeli example: an Israeli show had a bit where some cops joked about using zhuq for pepper spray on Yemeni people, and it was replaced with chili and Mexicans in the English subtitles. The Arabic translation had chili and Mexicans, too, even though Arabs would likely know that zhuq is.)
Yeah, I think it's really unfortunate that a lot of the translations from Japanese go through English first. So much gets lost that way. Sometimes Netflix uses the dubtitles (captions from the English dub) instead of the actual subtitles, too, which is annoying.

Fantastic documentary! Thanks for letting me be part of it. One small point of clarification for Gilles - one of the first anime clubs at a college was Rutgers Anime Alliance, created by Steve "Otaking" Pearl in 1988.

I was so lucky that I had three competing video stores all of which had a strong (if porn-heavy) anime sections.
The anger some people dump on the industry they supposedly love will never fail to confuse me. If you are a fan, then why do you hate everyone who brings you the content? That's just not all right. Anyone sending death threats is not a "fan."
Somebody gave me copies of the VKLL fansubs many years after the fact! Sadly, they (along with all my other fansubs) got abandoned over the course of several moves.
Fan harassment is a thing that'll never truly go away. It's good when it's responded with many fans going, "Not cool, dude," at it but it can never be stopped before it can be stopped. Only responded to. Like how villain act before the heroes react.
So many say, "get thick skin," but nobody should have to in the first place. Yes, asshole will always exist. Emotions will reach a boiling point as society keeps telling us to put a lid on things. But some people at the very least need to realize what they did and apologize at the bare minimum.
Basically the tldr of the whole thing is that we all need UBI implemented.

God damn was this so well done. So worth the wait. Diving into the history and exploring everything from where things started to now, to where things might go, I loved it! I can't recall exactly when I first stumbled upon your channel or which video I saw first, but I know that once I found it, I binged basically every video. I had NO idea about the translation industry or had even heard of the word 'localization'. I'm so appreciative of the knowledge you share (on all your channels!), and it's even inspired me to push my Japanese studies more, rethink how I approach the language, appreciate the translations more, and even consider going that direction as a career myself one day. So cheers for all your hard work! Excellent video all anime fans need to watch.
Just finished the video and wow this was such a great documentary, not only was it such a great history lesson but also really delves into all the struggles that go on within the localization industry itself. While I might have some grievances with how certain things are handled, I do need to remember that often times situations like that can be the result of multiple different factors like requests from the license holders, cultural differences and in the cases of video games achieving a certain age rating (I’m sure that also affects other mediums, but I’ve noticed that it affects video games more effectively compared to other mediums). And as you said, a vast majority of the translators and localizers in the industry today are fans too and want nothing but the best for the projects that they work on, and if it weren’t for their work I probably wouldn’t have experienced many of my favorite pieces of media. Its not always perfect, but considering the road the industry took to get to the place it is at today, is nothing short of impressive, and I only hope that going forward things only continue to go up, not just for the work itself but also the working conditions as well.

Personally knowing people who do or have done fan translation work and following the work of official translators in various places, it becomes very clear both how thankless and demanding a job localisation can be and how personally rewarding and fulfilling it can be to see works that you love made accessible to more people through your labour. I am picking away very slowly at learning Japanese myself, partly because as an occasional anime critic (when I have the spoons to write) it helps me do what I do better to understand the language and the cultural context, and partly because I love languages and I've wanted to speak Japanese since well before I was into anime and manga. One day I would like to be able to, if not help in localising certain as-yet-untranslated niche works outright, then at least understand them well enough to read and watch them and hopefully bring attention to them to get the people who can do that to notice. It's a small thing, but it's a task I'm passionate about. I want to be able to read back issues of GARO and Taishō-era anarchist poetry and watch obscure OVAs and art films and children's series. I want to experience these things which my largely monolingual status prevents me from fully enjoying.
So as one of the bigger localization critics, this video was interesting to me. I watched the whole video and it definitely made me rethink my opinions on localizers in general.
However I feel like alot of our concerns are mischaracterized. While I have no doubt you have experienced it, I rarely see people complaining about about a word missed or a disagreement with what they think a line should be translated as. Most of the people I interact with are upset with the liberties being taken with translated works, even if we look past all the political stuff.
As I get better and better at Japanese, obviously not nearly to the level of you and other localizers (I only have my N3, not that the JLPT is an accurate indication of Japanese ability), the more I'm able to spot glaring changes and creative liberties taken with properties (just look at some of the Trails games for example), and it's not like they are mistakes, sometimes entire character personalities and plot points are different if you compare the Japanese audio to the English text. I feel like based on what I've seen this is a valid concern to have, yet whenever it's brought up it's dismissed as us overreacting or the absolute worst one, "it's just a joke, why are you taking it so seriously?". I love these properties, and I want to see them get the love they deserve when they're localized, so when I see entire stories or characters getting butchered and then having my concerns laughed at or disregarded it really upsets me. (mainly referring to the Trails series again here, I know I'm bringing it up alot but I'm playing through it atm so it's fresh in my mind)
At the end of the day we are here for the Japanese creators work. This might seem harsh but I never go into a new anime, manga or game thinking about how well the localization is gonna be, I go in wanting to experience what stories the creators want to tell. For me each liberty taken is one step further away from the intended story. Even though it is impossible for localizations to be 100%, all we want is to consume something as close to the intended story as humanly possible.
However that all being said my side definitely has its problems too. I feel like it is unfair that the actions and mistakes of a single localizer is used as a statement to discredit the entire industry.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that people from my side see localizers as this shadowy cabal dedicated to ruining anime, manga and games, we (or at least myself and my circle) rarely hear from localizers, so when we see one attacking fans with no context it's easy to use that as a gotcha moment and use it to paint a bad picture of everyone in the industry. I've personally done this and I'll definitely make the effort to stop being so reactionary and follow more localizers from now on.
Also the harassment and abuse you have to experience from people technically on my side is unacceptable. I'm sorry for all the harassment and death threats you and other localizers receive, no human should have to put up with that. If I had my way people who send death threats, no matter what side, would be facing criminal charges.
PS: I loved the part of the video where everyone shared how they got into anime. If I hadn't found anime when I did I probably wouldn't be here right now (if you catch my drift) , so for me I was able to relate to those stories a lot.

I'm not american, so the story of localization in my country and language is probably too different, but as someone who studied japanese and translation (and would like to someday translate mangaI), this video has been very enlightening about the industry. And I have to thank you for being completely honest about the issue with AI-translation, because as it is, if we leave it festering it will soon take away important jobs and decimate the quality of translations and care put into our favorite shows and books.

I had to stop interacting with the fanbase for my favorite light novel series* because there was one typo on one page that used the wrong title for a character, and they will NOT let that slide even as the translations have almost entirely caught up to the Japanese releases. I'm just thankful that I can go online or to a bookstore and buy a physical copy I can read in this series that I can take on the train with me or similar trips where I don't have to rely on connectivity. I will always have infinite respect for translators.

Hi! Firstly, I want to say: Thank you so, so, *SO* much for making this video. I'm currently studying Japan Studies, and my dream is to localize Japanese media into both English and my native language, Danish. Seeing localization work being celebrated and having such a magnum opus of a video dedicated to it has given me so much motivation to follow this dream ❤
Secondly, I want to ask a question with regards to supporting localizers: Is a Crunchyroll subscription a good means of support? I've bought my share of official releases on DVD and Blu-ray, but I still stream a lot of anime -- especially newer ones -- illegally, not because I don't want to support localizers, but because I'm hesitant to support the monopoly that is Crunchyroll, especially with how infamous it is for underpaying its translators. But this video has made me reconsider: is that the correct course of action? Since I want to be part of the industry someday myself, I don't want to do anything that harms it, so I'd love to hear what you think! ^_^
unless ppl who work at CR call for a boycott, it's generally a good idea to support places if you're able. That way, it's easier to make the case: "look how popular anime is! look how much money you're making! pay your workers more!" but obvi, it all comes down to personal choice and it does more good to support a smaller company than *not* support a larger one.

I watched Sailor Moon in 1995 at one of the toughest years of my childhood. In 1999 I found it again on toonami it helped me then with my loneliness.Then in 2014-2015 it came back into my life and saved me again emotionally. I had no friends in elementary school much nor high school until later on. Anime has helped me meet friends online that are into the same shows or genre I'm in. I'm so sorry that fans can't see the value of Dubbed anime, Manga and light novels. The fact is with out those original dubbed anime like Sailor Moon Dragon Ball Dragon Ball Z Hamtaro ect we wouldn't have been so quickly introduced to Anime. Yes I watched anime in the 80's but I didn't know it was anime I thought it was weird Puerto Rican cartoons. I was like 4-7 years old. Nevertheless Anime truly has helped me in so many ways. I'm greatful to all of you VAs ADR Writers Translators Director Engineers and more that make all the things I love accessible for those of us like me that can't read fast enough or whatever other reasons to watch dub anime make it accessible and easier for us to enjoy Manga Light Novels and Anime. Thanks you so much a greatful fan from the 90's

I just sat through all 2.5 hours, and... wow. I can tell a lot of time, passion, hard work, blood, sweat and tears went into this video. As corny as it sounds, there were times when I teared up. I hope "future Sarahs" world doesn't become a reality, for anyone in your industry or the world at large. This video (and your channels in general) have helped me to realize how much hard work and passion goes into translation and localization. This has helped me better appreciate the dubs and subs that I watch, and in turn I have become more interested in learning about what goes on behind the scenes and all the people involved in pushing a show/property out into the world. Around 50:45, you state how you are proud of the mark you've left and, you should be proud of yourself, don't let anyone (on the internet or otherwise) take that away from you! Thank you for all the time and effort you've put into this video and channel. I am currently on a journey to learn Japanese, and I often have your videos on in the background while I'm doing other things around the house. I hope you continue to make all types of videos in the future (don't listen to your future self, :P ).

Will the "pay" ever get fixed?
I grew up getting exposed to anime thru The Sci Fi Channel's Saturday Morning Anime block - so Project A-Ko, Dominion Tank Police, Venus Wars, Record of Lodoss War, Robot Carnival, Demon City Shinjuku, etc. I was fascinated by this stuff because they felt like real movies and not just kids cartoons. And while I came to learn that the dubbed dialogue wasn't necessarily accurate to the original Japanese, it sounded like dialogue from a feature film (one of the reasons I'm less interested in modern anime because the translated dialogue often feels awkward in english). I feel like I've aged out of anime at this point in my life, but I appreciate that it's still going strong and has so many more options for people to enjoy.
Though I do still miss the ritual of going to Video 2000 on a Friday night and renting a VHS tape of Ninja Scroll or Ranma 1/2 ❤

Personally, I hope we get a few AI translations officially if only to give the usual Fandom ghouls their wish they should've been careful of. See them balk at what they've encouraged. If cartoons have taught me anything, most life lessons are often learned when it's just shy of being "too late."

@@PrettyTranslatorSarahMoon Ray Mona also rediscovered the Toon Makers Sailor Moon as well. It’s a reminder that Renaissance Atlantic could largely produce only Power Rangers because they made so much money for the company until it went defunct in 2009! Power Rangers got acquired by Hasbro in 2017.

I translate mostly marketing and business stuff, and the pay is pretty good - I’m always shocked whenever someone asks me to subtitle something, subtitling pays a third or even less than i usually invoice. No idea about literature, it seems a very closed world limited to very few translators. It seems to sit somewhere between subtitling and business translations in terms of pay, but the work is not very regular.

I can't believe anyone actually wants AI generated translations. Haven't people seen babblefish translations? They're terrible.
And it's not just about getting the meaning across. It's about making the dialogue/narration read well/flow naturally, because otherwise it breaks the audience's immersion and wrecks the entertainment. I bet I'm preaching to the choir though. I think this whole AI thing will be a fad, because the AI is just... bad.

I've heard many people call it "dee eye see." If I'd pronounced it "deek" like the little girl does at the end, some pedant would correct me in the comments saying it should be "dee eye see" 🤷♀️
Also I hope you don't stop debunking myths in translation. Not just for those with their heads up their asses but for those who've fallen for that rhetoric passively and are more open to listening. They're the kind that those with an Anti-Woke agenda (and I use that word ironically) need to seem legit. Also... fellow translators need a boost in confidence with words from their own people.
Yeah, I quickly figured out trying to convince people who already drank the koolaid is a fool's errand.
Still the best counter to misinformation is, well, information. Free at that. Those who listen will listen.
