Put the beef back in the pan, pour in the ale and stock and simmer for about 1 hour 30 mins or until the beef is tender.
Remove about half of the liquid and save it for a delicious gravy.
Add the corn flour mix and stir in to thicken the liquid in the pan. When thickened, allow the filling to cool.
To make the pastry.
Rub the fats into the flour along with the pinch of salt. Pour in the water and bring the pastry together.
Roll it in clingfilm and chill it in the fridge for about 30 mins.
Roll the pastry out, line the pie dishes and cut the tops.
Fill the pie cases with the beef and ale mix, put the lids on and egg wash.
Bake for about 25 mins in an oven at 180c / 350f / gas mark 4

Get this man on TV the wider masses need to learn how this genius works. Kids should be taught this in school. Well done sir!!
who watches tv?
Agree 100%. Just good food made really easy.
Tv would never allow him to be the David we have all grown to love to watch, I’d rather donate license money to all the RUclipsrs I watch. At the end of the day we all love how he keeps it simple and doesn’t use all the fancy stuff that tv chefs use.
Spreading the word and getting kids to watch the channel is a good start .
Many thanks....I await the call form the BBC lol.
@BakingOnABudget
You are way better than the BBC. Stay as you are. I love your channel, and I don't watch TV. You make great food that's affordable.
You need to write a cookery book with your excellent recipes, great job
I would buy it in a heartbeat
Many thanks......It's a possible idea for the future.
Yes definitely write a book, I would buy it.
Absolutely lovely! You are teaching me the cooking my ancestors did. Thank you.
Thanks a lot....Yes all good old school baking....can't beat it.
Hard to beat a good steak pie, such good comfort food.
I agree....delicious and filling. Thanks.
You always deliver on a gorgeous product, fantastic vid my friend ...
Many thanks....hope you try the pies.
With todays cost of living, you would most definitely be helping so many families and individuals with your cheap and delicious recipes. Hats off to you sir! 👏
Many thanks.....I hope the channel helps.
A good steak and ale pie is one of the best things to eat 👍👍👍👍👍well done sir another great one from you
Many thanks....I agree it's a delicious and filling pie.
Proper cooking, excellent results. You're a real teacher who doesn't need to advertise a wristwatch, car, or expensive equipment. ❤
Many thanks....I do like to keep the baking process as simple as I can with minimal equipment.
Oh steak and ale pie...one of my all time favourites ..thanks Dave for the recipe
My pleasure...hope you enjoy them.
Thank you, this looks delicious. A comparable pie from my local bakery is AUD7.50, and the meat seems to be "glued" into the pie with a substantial amount of either gelatine or cornflour thickened gravy and way less meat than your pie.
Thanks a lot....Yes some shop bought steak pies are a bit short on the steak....home aked is best.
@@BakingOnABudgetI'm enjoying watching even though I don't eat meat!
I love steak and ale and will definitely be trying this. A goulash recipe, would be great!

Many thanks......A book might be an idea for the future.
Always enjoy your baking
Many thanks.
Thank you for this, im 76 but never knew how to properly process the meat. Now i d9. 🎉
Thanks....yes you have to simmer it for a while to get it nice and tender.
Thanks again Dave for another delicious recipe 👍
My pleasure....hope you give them a try.
Another blinding recipe Dave, thank you 🙏
Many thanks....the pies were delicious.
Consider adding a large pinch of dried mustard (1 p - maybe?) to the beef and ale. You won't actually taste the mustard, but it enhances the beef and ale flavor wonderfully!
Thanks for the tip I'll try it next time I make them.
That looks fabulous. Thank you
My pleasure....hope you give then a try.
That looks really tasty, I love steak and ale pie!
Thanks a lot....hope you give them a go...really delicious.
Brilliant work! I used to do a similar recipe but with leeks and I would use a hoppy IPA for a stronger flavour. I also used to buy the pastry ready made because I was never confident to make it from scratch.
Yes there are a few variations....carrots and mushrooms work well too. Thanks.
Love your accent, sounds like the south side of the Tyne, Hebburn maybe???
Close...I'm in South Shields. Thanks.
YUMMO! I’m salivating 😂😂😂
Yes they were delicious....hope you give them a try. Thanks.
Looks so tasty and I can't believe how cheap they are to make !!
Thanks a lot....yes a lot cheaper than a shop bought pie....and a lot more tasty too.
Another great recipe and wow the price very good indeed enjoyed the video and will definitely try this recipe 😀
Thanks a lot....hope you enjoy the pies.
I'm definitely doing this recipe. It's my husbands favourite and he loved your egg custard recipe I made for him x
Thanks a lot....hope you both enjoy the pies.
Here is a tip if you want to reduce the liquid in a recipe. Leave the lid off the pan and have an electric fan blowing across it. The steam will blow away rapidly and you can turn the heat up and it will not boil. This method will remove the excess water surprisingly quickly.
Thanks....Yes i do that with some recipes....but the liquid I took off this one made a delicious grave.
that looks wowowowowowowow ,
Many thanks....they were delicious.
Great video. I make steak and ale pies often and freeze them before baking for later.
I also add some stilton in mine and that is beautiful.
Thanks a lot....Yes a bit of stilton would add to the richness of the pies.
@@BakingOnABudgetand add to the cost.
Oh wow that looks scrummy my mouth’s watering 🤣😂
Thanks a lot....they were delicious.
Love the vids mate! You need to get on the asmr! You’d kill it 💪🏻👍🏻
Many thanks....hope you give the pies a go.
is it similar to "drunken stew" without potatoes? that's really good. When the plan is to freeze some of the pies, the chimney (steam release hole) becomes the initial of the filling. ie, S A. or C. or. T. steak n ale, chick or tourtieres. 😁
Yes it is like an ale stew....good timp for the freezing....Thanks.
Yes!
Day 152 of asking for a Dundee Cake!
Thanks a lot....Dundee Cake coming soon...honest.
Cracking video once again Sir, Pies look Fantastic as always... Hey make sure to video if You make that Goulash .. Keep er lit Bro
Thanks a lot...the pies were delicious and yes i will do a Goulash and video it.
Your pastry always looks perfect Dave. What could l use instead of ale. From Australia.
You could use some red wine or just have the gravy without wine or ale. Thanks.
Just to let you know, Dave.
This video didn't come up in my notifications.
This has happened to other channels I have subbed to.
RUclips sucks.
Same on mine too
Thanks....I know sometimes youtube seem to push the videos and other times not....still trying to figure out why that is.
Looks gorgeous - could I add a diced carrot to the filling?
Yes carrot would work well and also mushrooms....Thanks.
Hi ive never done steak and ale pies before, grateful for a brilliant recipe. Could i ask if you chose to freeze would you freeze befor cooking or after. Thanks Sam
Hi, I would freeze them before baking....hope you enjoy them. Thanks
@BakingOnABudget thank you for replying. I love your pod casts good wholesome food on a budget. Just me and my teen and I find it valuable. Please film the goulash. Sam
Yet Another gem dave, never made these pies before, but will now following your tutorial. Dave is there any advantage to using egg wash rather than milk please..... Brill video, as always. Michelle.
Thanks a lot....the egg makes the pastry a bit browner and crisper but milk would work just as well.
That's useful to know, thank you Dave ..
👩🍳🥧
Thanks a lot.
Excellent video and recipe. These look fantastic. I'd be interested to know roughly what sort of meat content % this has compared to a supermarket one. The supermarket equivalent is approx 50p more expensive than yours, but thats about 1/3rd meat weight wise and full of all sorts of other rubbish
Thanks....I found it difficult to find a reasonable comparison....most shop bought ones had very little steak in them....home baked is always best.
@@BakingOnABudget Absolutely. Also, if you don't mind me asking, where was it you got that large chopping board? That looks very useful and I wouldn't mind getting one myself
@@JAYG6390 I got it from amazon...years ago
@@BakingOnABudget Great thanks for the info :)
Any tips for picking an ale for this recipe? I don't know anything about alcohol: once ruined a batch of beer bread because I had no idea how bitter IPAs are.
I just used a cheap ale...nothing fancy....and I put just enough in to taste it 250ml of ale to 500ml stock. Thanks.
Looks delicious and I would veganise it with some red beans. But I think this beer isn't available here in Italy. Could I use Guinness?
j'aime votre nom. lol.
@@linebrunelle1004 La confiture, c'est vegan, non? 😉
Yes Guinness would work and give areal ddp flavour....Thanks.
@@BakingOnABudget Thanks Dave! I will try my bean and Guinness-pie in autumn. At the moment it's too hot.
Nee cracking in the pastry. Need a mince and onion pie next and a Stottie recipe. Light open crumb Stotties 😆
Thanks a lot....Yes I'm going to try some stotties soon.
Can you replace the ale if you don't want to use alcohol?
Yes you could just leave the ale out and add a little more stock. Thanks.
or put double the meat in and at £2.28 a pie still a complete bargain and a luxury! I would never buy a shop pie - they cannot compete. Actually I pop a tablespoon of red lentils into my stewing meat for bulk and texture. I'd put some carrot and mushroms in there too. Always like to sneak in my 5 a day where I can.
Thanks a lot....I agree shop bought steak pies are always a bit short on the steak.
