- Take a look at Middle-earth: Shadow of War's endgame, a multi-stage affair called The Shadow Wars, which asks you to defend your fortresses against Sauron's forces.
This video is based on a trip to Monolith in Seattle. Warner Bros paid for flights and accommodation.

I really hope this isn't the end of the "Shadow Of" series. I kinda want a Trilogy.
Nocturne well if Monolith can once, if they can do it twice, then they sure as hell can do it thrice.
From what I understand, the DLC introduce a shitton of characters though.
I'd love a spin-off called something like "Shadow of Mirkwood" that takes place in Mirkwood Forrest as it is being corrupted.
maybe the third one is set in the Fourth Age and Talion is the bad guy uniting the now scattered orcs to fight Gondor. Middle Earth: Shadow of Vengence.
Believe it or not I would actually love to see the series get milked as long as the games are great. However monolith can only do so much with a game set in the universe where everything has already been established. We already know Talion either has to lose or give up eventually. Honestly I would like a side game showing what would happen if they killed talion first. Would he save his family? Or would his wife/son become the gravewalker in his stead?
It kind of sucks that the enemy makes smart remarks and the such when they break down the wall like in the original gameplay reveal but our own orcs don't...
May be our orcs Will speak like that... this videos are from demo version so there is hope
...nope
It does because that footage was the real game this demo version is the game we got it's been water down so fucking bad it's still a good game but I wanted to the play the first gameplay we got to see
X24assassins YES i want that too its still looking awesome
I like how talion is just quite the whole time the Orcs trash talk.
Wait I think this was what Aragorn was doing for 50 years.
I had wanted an Aragorn skin in Shadow of War. Until I realized that an Aragorn skin would just be Talion in a different outfit...
A bit thinner jaw I think, less of a round face...
Are you calling Talion fat?!
GeneralSnuggly do you not know who Sean bean is?! BLASPHEMY
Yes
I really hope Monolith comes up with one more 'Shadow of' game to make it a trilogy, thoroughly enjoyed Shadow of War
That crossbow execution of Talion is straight up brutal.
Right, imagine resurrecting from that n having to take em out. Ouch.
Words cannot describe how hyped I am for this game... I've actually dreamt, like no joke DREAMT of playing this game.
Jova Nova Cant wait either. Loved raising my minions up to general then slicing their head off lol.
Assassin yeah man it's one of my favorite games of all time.
Assassin i dream aboud it too! I have 400 h in first one and its only game that i play with computer or ps4!
I loved the shit out of the original game, it came out of nowhere and won game of the year, the action and controlls were simply impeccable, and the game was so dense, there was always an enemy around, the stealth portions were so much fun too. Its one of my favorite games ever. I would have loved it if there was more to do :/ bcause after finishing the game and all the sidequests all there was to do was kill low level orcs here and there. I also allways hoped that we could controll our captains at a higher level of demands, and my wish has come true! Now you can make huge sieges and do tons of cool shit
Jova Nova I had a dream about it too but when I woke, it felt terrible
Would be cool to see Sauron be part of the Shadow Wars and turning your captains against you (unless they're loyal) just like in the Bright Lord dlc.
Shadow of The Ring - Talion's Revenge
dude yes
Oh my gosh Y E S
Yes!
I think the next shadow of game will be shadow of Orcs because during blade of galadriel expansion there was a orc saying there was a orc left middle earth with a drake with him traveling another realm
I think it would be interesting to see a third game with a new protagonist, in which Talion gets corrupted by his own ring and goes bad, and it's up to the new character to come in and basically wipe out everything we built up over the last two games. It would be amazing to duke it out with our own most powerful war chiefs and stuff. I keep imagining this new protagonist as Tauriel since she kinda just... *leaves* at the end of the Hobbit trilogy and is PROBABLY still alive, but obviously it doesn't have to be her. Still, would be cool, though.
You said that sauron try to take back mordor so it means that in the end of the game he is still alive and the series is not over
Assassin you can't know
Assassin ok I believe that
Assassin I just want more lotr games
Gravewalker do you have a link of them saying that? Not saying I don't believe you but I wanna see for myself, I'm in denial lol
DragonFane123 Come on, people... He's clearly lying, the devs haven't said a word about this being the last "Shadow Of" game in the franchise. Unless this game becomes a spectacular and colossal failure, it won't be the end for the franchise. I'm sure WB would love to publish yet another sequel to this game should it be successful and should it do well on sales. Also keep in mind that even if Talion/Celembribor somehow dies for real in the ending, it doesn't mean it's the ending for the entire franchise. Monolith hasn't been giving a shit if their game is canon or not, so I don't see why they wouldn't mess with the LOTR lore once again just to make another Shadow Of game.
I'd love to see a sequel where you play as one of saurons nazghul.
I don't think we should take the "ties in to LOTR" too seriously. These games, while very cool and enjoyable, are really not canon. I mean, Sauron doesn't even forge the one ring in the games. I personally don't concern myself with how all of this fits into the canon LOTR timeline.
They basically say "fuck canon!" and have fun with the setting. Pretty much full creative freedom, and they seem pretty enthusiastic about the game on the streams.
Sauron does forge the one ring. He has Celebrimbor refine it.
+Austin Heath that doesn't really matter, it's still deviates completely from the events of the book
Very true. Just wanted to point out that he does. Technically speaking, lore wise, Celebrimbor himself doesn't actually forge the rings canonically.
Austin Heath Celebrimbor only forged the three Elven rings.
I hope there is endless mode or whatever happens dose not just stop. I like the idea of defending my forts with my ork captains. I hope when this shadow war thing has done it's thing and it ties into lord of the rings we are able to keep playing defending/attacking forts open world etc. Nothing worse than a game after the hours and hours spent to just finish with no option to keep going
Seeing those grates on the throne room floor makes me somewhat worried all the boss fights will follow the same pattern, whacking the enemy while avoiding fire, instead of having a variety of unique obstacles.
I think there have been some footage shown where an Archer Overlord has snipers posted on the upper levels.
Dane B Kappler They are there but they aren't always used there has been gameplay where they haven't
They're not all like that - I took on a few fortresses and none of them had fire pit Overlords.
Did they have poison pits or something similar, i think the original comment was more along the lines of "avoiding elemental damage". is your comment still true Eurogamer that they dont all have pits?
GamerGeddon02 Poison pits and curse pits as well as traps or mines there was even a graug once
As a single player gamer, I don't really care much for the micro transactions. They are a problem in today's modern gaming, I won't deny that, but I'm still a fan of this series. I don't think the MTs will affect the gameplay all too much other than avoid the grinding... though I don't want that. The whole point of the nemesis system was to make grinding fun, as the choices you made in that system really affected how Sauron's army functioned. It gave the world a lot of depth and it looks like it certainly has improved here.
I still don't like micro transactions, though I suppose nowadays it's common. I wasn't surprised when I saw these anyways. Most gaming businesses nowadays have poured boatloads of money into projects such as these, and I suppose this is their way of making some of that money back without sacrificing more resources on making extra DLC.
Generally speaking, the modern game market is a vast improvement over the "good ole' days". In the old days, most games weren't even supported very long and there was no new content at all. You would get full blown sequels every few years but honestly, I prefer this system to that.
The most annoying game to me is GTA 5, which specifically took out party mode on purpose to get people online and into their dumbass MT system.
It's nice to see a studio focus on playability beyond the end of the game. That's all too rare, as far as I'm concerned. Still don't like the MTX but I'm assuming that isn't Monolith's idea.
The shadow wars leading to the true ending is super clever. It gives you incentive to keep playing after you beat it.
Oh wow, I think the graphics are getting way better now!
LowkeyOfSassgard that's not even the half of it, every one is playing an E3 build and the devs said it'll look different in release
They said in a recent stream that it supports 4k so I'd assume it would be much better
Tear of Grace: Alright. Let's keep this fortress from being taken away from my buttery fingers. Who's leading these assholes today?
Uruk leader: Rrrraaaarr!!!
Tear: ...nooo...
Prak Jaws: RRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!
So does that mean we have to finish the story before the Dark Lord starts attacking us? That's kinda boring, I'd rather him attack during the whole game.
But that is just as boring, make it completely random and endless, providing uncertainty whilst at the same time not doing it in scale and instead making the size of the force random too.
Sam Fischbeck No the devs said in one of their live streams that fortress defense missions will still happen at the beginning just not as much because they don't want it to happen while you're about to or in a mission but when it's done the randomizer will make it more prevalent.
Alot has changed since then though. we have to be careful we dont forget that the game is still under development. we need more updated information now.
No, there are random attacks before the Shadow War but you can be unlucky and never having it in action
Geesh nothing's perfect bro lol
Perhaps a prequel about calabrimbor I know we got the bright lord dlc but it just doesn't feel like enough
Finally fortress defense gameplay!
180+ hours into the game and I only hear about this mode now.....
So basically, fortress defense are only in endgame? Are the defense still on going while playing story mode? please tell me it's working that way too :(
Ultimate Shifter don't worry you'll still get to defend your forces before the end of the game , they'll just not be as common until you hit the end
Oh I see, thanks! I believe that it was mentioned in one of the livestreams. I was kinda worry about it.
Another question, does the number of units on our back shown in these fortress assault gameplays will be final? I mean, it just looks ridiculous that Talion marched an army to siege a fort but when the attack starts, it turns out to be like we just had about a 100 uruks + captains/warchiefs. Is this going to be final?
What I meant is that its been finalized that the defense gameplay will work that in the release
man I was honestly hoping for an endless mode lol, maybe it just goes on wit the random fort stuff after you beat the shadow attacks, may seem mindless and boring but I would really enjoy that honestly
Overlord1219 yes thats coming in DLC
Can you capture their warlord and then wait for them to try to rescue him?
Honestly I think if it leads into LOTR at the end I think talion will finally die, since Celebrimbor is connected to Sauron when Sauron dies Celebrimbor's spirit will move on to vallinor and talion dies.
I think it would be a lot of fun for the devs to take the next game take place AFTER the War of the Ring. Its territory Tolkien vaguely described and it would be a ton of fun to see how different cultures/factions react. King Aragorn could maybe send you on a mission to quell the eastern/Southern Human kingdoms who refuse to kneel for instance, lots of possibilities IMO.
This is my theory there will be a third game and it will be about either Talion breaking free and fighting Sauron and indirectly helping the Fellowship or it will be a side story where a enslaved Talion is fighting Celebrimbor. My other theory is that Talion is that Ringwraith in the First Film that's looking over the log Frodo is hiding under and I bet he's the Ringwraith that gets "You want him come and claim him!" said to him it would be so epic if Talion was tied to the movies. I also suspect he might be the Witch King in the Films some how.
If they make a third I think what’d I want to see is a spin-off game about torvin and his journey that led him to meeting Talion.
Man, I was hoping these Were Endless
I really hope we get 3rd game. Started replaying this on my ps5. Never finished before on PS4. Got you like lvl 55+ then go distracted with another new game and forget about it. Now back re enjoying it.
This is 100% not there last one cause there nemesis system is probably the best game system ive seen so far, it makes everyone's gameplay unique and special
fortress siege + free flow combat
im sold
10/10 everything that i would want from a rpg adventure game
As much as i'd like a trilogy in this series, my favourite thing is the nemesis system and imagine what monolith could make if that was taken into other games as well.....
How great this game is, and fast forward to now, and how very very bad Gollum….and I mean very bad🤷♂️
They better make a new one if these
So there are two games now where you have to keep the forces of sauron distracted while the fellowship of the ring has to destroy the one ring. Shadow of war and I believe it is called lord of the ring, war in the north where you get to choose between a dwarf, ranger , and a spell casting elf
Crystalic fire I love war in the north
If we finish shadow wars stages can we do them again?
Yes
Awesome , I been waiting to see a fort defense, I almost thought they didn't exist and that it would just be some quick menu event , I'm glad this is included, cause after you beat shadow of mordor, there isn't anything to do besides manipulating orcs , and at 150 hours on shadow of mordor, I got quite bored just killing orcs or Branding the entire menu
I think that talion will become the next dark lord in the game franchise
Shadow wars should be endless. it should also be completely random, not just end game content. make it so i dont know when i will have to defend, and i dont know if its a small or large force until im there.
GamerGeddon02 that's probably why it has online.. It's WB bruh.. they will suck your money out of your life just to get that money.
Btw.. Talion can teleport(fast travel) between region as we have those buildings on shadow of mordor to fast travel.
GamerGeddon02 it was originally going to be but its a clear sign they have lied and are going to force the microtransactions after completeing the game
Yeah, i know people stuck up for them with the whole "just dont buy them and play the game" which would work since SoM was grindy also. but its the other shit thats winding me up.
Lack of randomness, just to promote end game content which is just going to be online fort assaults.
Lack of verticality in forts, one of their big selling points.
Lack of Voices and speeches. (ive watched all of the gameplay videos, and im hearing many over and over, despite being told their was over Incredible amounts of new voices. ive heard less than 50, which is bad considering there is wayyyyy more than 50 uruk types.)
Lack of Decorum when dealing with MTs and Promotional material.
I used to think it was an amazing game back in the 16min reveal. but even then they have stripped so much of that away. (Warchiefs speaking at each area, with personalized speeches, and not just a form of "im going to kill you", the fact their are no longer elevated points on gatehouses and such, the personal warchief speeches at the end. it all adds up.)
Its going to be a bigger, better SoM that will in the end, be the same crappy end game. whilst i wouldnt normally complain, ive spent many hours in SoM's endgame and its shit. this will just be more of that, but more uruks to look at once you have dominated the entire map.
GamerGeddon02 bud i was pissed when they Announced microtransactions i hate them period in games unless its a mobile free game wb has screwed over the replayablity i havent looked at gameplay much as i knew it would make me furious as i had preordered the game before that bullshit was dropped on everyone an now this shit well done WB devalue your game more if JR Tolkien was Alive And saw you greedy basterds exploiting his story like this he would have words to say and rip you a new Arse hole i paid $160 for the gold edition im in Australia only to have them shit on such a gr8 game and you wankers who say just ignore them well i told you so like everyone else that they would kill what they first promised in the Alph gameplay when it was first shown
Yup, first game is pretty much dead in favour of a more shallow game. personally i felt the fort assaults wasnt everything, i was looking foward to having forts attacked in the open world... no such luck now it seems.
If they make a third "Shadow of" game, I'd LOVE to see it be about Talion taking over Mordor after the LotR series to crush the remaining Orc/Uruk/Olog resistance and become the true lord of Mordor
If anyone is curious as to if they can keep making the "Shadow of" games, read The Last Ring Barer. Its a book that tells a story picking up after Return of the King written by a russian author in 1999. It was pretty cool, not canon, but shows the potential
Why does talion look like that in the shadow wars talion looks different
I can't wait for the third game in this franchise! It's going to be in an alternate universe, where Talion and his orc army take over Middle Earth!
How is he in shadow wars and still has Celebrimbor
He’s under the possession of a new ring. He has given his body to a new host
So the true ending ties in? My question is if that's the case if there's ever another game(s) or movie(s) that take place after LOTR would we see partially friendly orcs because they're with the bright lord/talion or would it follow talion after LOTR fighting and conquering the remaining forces or orcs and sauron
Wait how do you still have Celebrimbor even though you are doing the shadow wars mission and you are nazgul Tatlion how do you still have Celebrimbor?
This post game mode sounds great, makes there be a point to building up all your forts. It being a challenge mode is nice b/c shadow of mordor was too easy.
I hope that when you rescue your overlord he thanks you or says someting not just run off and be like zombie again!
I would say that once the one ring Is destroyed both Sauron and Celebrimbor die but since Celebrimbor has made a new ring and bound himself within talion I think he may linger on middle earth a while longer
i hope shadow of war isnt canon , id rather have saurons head served on a platter and have my own ending made rather then to have knowledge of how the story actually will end
this end game looks freaking amazing they should keep it going forever so it never ends or add a new game plus idea
Great vid, was wondering if u had a opinion on how fun the game was when u played it
It's good fun! I made a video about the little things I like, if you want to check that out (Johnny)
Eurogamer cheers johnny, looking forward to more content!
If this game is gonna be as big as we all think they would be dumb to end it here the nemesis system is literally game changing even from what we will see in shadow of war it's doubtful this will be the end of the Series Commanding Orc army's is fucking amazing
That Orc was only a 47!!
Really can see more of this game in the future
My only question regarding this is that after we complete Shadow Wars and receive the True Ending are we still able to free roam in the open world? Since this is an open world RPG that also happens to include microtransactions for gear/orcs I would think the answer would be an obvious "yes" but I just want to make sure.
1:09 I hope I wasn't the only one to notice that. He was a legendary weapons master. Hope I find one of them, with an iron will, so it can be my nemesis.
I think it is well done that the dark lord starts attacking after finishing the story game and conquering all the fortresses because if you do not have enough skills and achievements how could someone defeat him so i think it is well paced and awesome. I have been playing it for a few days non-stop and i love the game story quests and side missions s well.
I have done the shadow wars it ties into the film cannon
Here is my idea: a two player campaign in which you play as the two Blue Wizards who where implied to have been slain by Saruman but maybe they where really trapped underneath mordor and where freed when sauron died in LOTR they released their powers and brought the ground down from underneath the uruks and then together purged middle earth of darknesswith the help of gandalf. That would be awesome. The wizards are BLUE. Celebrimbor is BLUE. They would have the same powers.
Pity that game will be singleplayer, maybe after shadow of war. they will make shadows of wars. Multiplayer with two options 1.your idea cooperative mode 2. player vs player mode dark lord vs bright lord .Remember what shelob say:"why would i do that ring maker? You and sauron are one".So I think that sauron and celebrimbor have same goal conquer Mordor and become true LORD OF THE RINGS
Will there be a 3rd game after Shadow of War? I would like Talion to come back and the game takes place after the events of Return of the King and you bring your followers with you
Maybe involve a story were Sauron's followers are attempting to resurrect him, or brought back an evil designed by him. With the goal of you stopping it
Damn. I want them to expand the nemesis even further
Shahir Hameed dlc:s?
I think they will have a 3rd game where Talion will head South to the place the Oliphaunts come from, because they could still be a major problem for the races of Middle Earth I mean it took for the most part an undead army to kill them. Not to mention the fact that several of the Dark Lord's Armies came from other lands by ship that were not named. So I think they can easily make a 3rd game they'll just have to be creative.
Continuing with Talion, the logical thing would be to have him take Sauron's place. Unless the blue wizards who went east fell to corruption and come back to dispute the new management. Supposedly the Hammer(?) came back to Mordor with the heads of two Istari, but that's rumor.
or maybe he dies during the battle on the black gate while holding sauron real form while aragorn attacks baradur? and when the ring is destroyed he is weakened and goes to his humanoid form and then we smack him with celebrimbor smithing hammer
Nathaniel Claw Wait...Aragorn was doing this kind of stuff for 50 years right? I'm pretty new to LOTR
kinda... i think he is 70 or 80 years during the movies
DrakeBarrow You were pretty close to the ending, actually
Still playing🫸🤛
Same
I'm about to get the platinum trophy
Can't wait to buy boxes in this too.
László Kovács sarcasm?
if they are going to make another shadow of series then it would be cool if they either go forward where someone else takes sauron's place or to go back to before sauron in defeating Melkor. Maybe if they do go for the Next heir in Sauron's place, you play as the next one or one of two likely people to and can either stop the other and save middle earth or become its ruler.
Im more interested in the multiplayer part of tis game. Dont really know where to find much info.
If talion is a distraction then he is doing one hell of a job with that. He is the literal thorn pissing off Sauron and his lackeys with how he turns their uruk against them and takes their forts needed to destroy the boy who is trying to destroy the ring,
Eurogamer, I honestly love your Shadow of War videos, and I think everyone ( except the 108 people who disliked ) here will agree
As to where this Shadow of series is going, well it dosent have to end with Sauron's death. Morgoth/Melkor could return, since he's still very much alive despite being banished to the outer void. Celebrimbor could continue with his dream of reversing the corruption of the uruks, which apparently were originally elves. And dont forget that Sauron is merely a lieutenant of Melkor, so there must be more, perhaps even a rival in the shadows who's mad that Sauron got all the attention recently?
so youre saying only time you get to defend your fortress from attacks is after the story?
Wait so your fortress don't get attack mid-game/mid-story? If all you are doing in the story is to beef up your fortresses to defend against the final push, it kind of hints that the story might not be longer than the Shadow of Mordor.
splinteridiot no the devs have stated your forts will occasionally be attacked. as to how much. im unsure of that
gameexpert133 yea I just remember in their early streams and in one the game trailers they mention sauron forces will try to counter attack. I guess when Eurogamer mention "in gameplay terms it basically means getting to explore the flip side of the coin when it comes to fortress assault" (1:04) causes some confusion.
gameexpert133 It has also been confirmed that your own Overlords may betray you and take the fortress for themselves. But that is a very rare occurrence.
does this mean that fort defences are limited (not endless)?
if so, then the fortress assaults will also be limited since there will be no one to take the fort.
And dont come and tell me about the online PAY TO WIN mode, im talking about offline mode
ignacio radmilovich bruh they can't show you them shiny loot chests if you're always offline
fort defenses are random throughout the entire game and happens more often after you finish the game, these are more like... extras I suppose
ignacio radmilovich they are random but in story mode its rare after story mode its more common
ignacio radmilovich when endgame role around woudnt you be strong enough to fight the ones that paid early on then stopped grinding
yes, you will still be attacked even after shadow wars, though how much we still do not know
I'd like to see this made a trilogy even if there are hiccups in the lore between this world and LotR it's still a really awesome concept! Consider it fan fiction made playable!
Well it's already a "what if" instead of 100% canon to lotr lore
idea for a third game set it after all the books and stuff have it where talion has another kid with (insert female badass here) and when talion dies clembrimbor cant reincarnate him again so he goes to his kid to protect him/her from (insert villain that killed talion here)
Holy fuck. That crossbow kill.
wait how is he human during shadow wars
The Micro-transactions raised an eyebrow. The Endgame content lowered it. I hope they aren't anymore surprises. DLC I am willing to pay for: You play as Sauron.
So awesome
In the end of lord of the rings all the Uruks and olog-hai just went rogue they had no master no one to fight for so maybe in the next shadow of game they’ll include a new protagonist to become the new lord of Mordor I hope they’ll do this because it’d be fun to just restart the whole of Mordor
Hei nice vid. Thank you! Did Monolith tell you the answer about the defending of the fortress? Do we have to defend them also during the main campaign?
This actually looks great! The war becoming harder as time progresses.
Doubt it ties directly into LoTR. It's important to remember, between The Hobbit and The Fellowship there is around a 60 year gap.
I mean he is a immortal possecesd zombie, bruh might have been there awhile
Why am I having a suspicion that Shadow Wars would include every single Nemesis Uruk, be it a Captain or a Warchief that you didn`t behead during the entirety of the story mode, return back to try invade your fortresses one last time (or so are we led to believe) and to try return back to their seats of power this way (think the Ultimate Nemesis battle in Lord of Mordor, but *cranked UP TO SHRAKIN` ELEVEN* )?
And even more, those attacking Nemeses may *even have some pre-existing Nemeses from your original SoM savefile you used in order to import your SoM Nemesis and Follower into SoW that are still alive in the Forge of the said savegame* ?
I was confused about this. Thanks
how many shadow wars stages do you have to do
Well this is gonna be a couple of rage from myself when defending
Has anyone found the original gameplay video for this? Hungry for some SoW gameplay...
I really hope they will have a trials of war mode again but with u having to capture fortresses
i hope their is a chance that sauron and/or a barlrog will lead one of these assaults or that sauron and/or a barlog leads the final assault....maybe both, that would be awesome if both.
You join the nazgul in the end
I'm at 50% now in Shadow Wars. And I think I'm done. Random Orcs having no chance isn't right. Lol. I killed many Orcs 5+ levels higher than me, then out of no where a level 46 Orc hits me with a spear and he has no chance. You instantly lose the mission out of no where. It's Bullshit.
That's why you check their stats before confronting them, since the orcs in the Shadow Wars all have fully visible stats.
So...can i have endless shadow wars? Like i take a fortress and they take it back and i take it again... Like this?
Idea for the next Shadow game: Middle-Earth, Shadow of Arda. (Sauron tries to bring back Morgoth)
In Lord of the rings talion was in the background of the first one so I think it was thought about long ago
