This is the best demo I’ve heard of the Pantheon. I finally bought one - after listening to this video about 100 times! Wonderful pedal. I match it with a Morning Glory for solos.
This video review pretty much is the reason I bought the Wampler Pantheon. It sounds so good in this video. It shows the slightly more compressed overdrive tone that I like/wanted. Thanks. Great video.
I always thought the KOT sounded pretty good, but I didn't actually know it was based on a Bluesbreaker for some time. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it never instantly made me think of a Bluesbreaker. It seems too smooth. As such it was never a pedal I even considered getting on the waiting list for. The Pantheon on the other hand seems to capture the essence of the Bluesbreaker really well and the more comprehensive control set makes it more appealing to me as I'm not a big fan of internal trim pots/dip switches (though there are pedals I really want that do use them). It seems to have a slightly different texture (for want of a better description) to the drive sound which I really like. Slightly gritty but not fuzzy/fizzy.
To be fair the KOT is a boost with a little color, bit of upper mid and bit of bass cut. It pushes your rig and doesn’t add a tremendous amount of coloration to YOUR sound. The wampler sounds great but it def has more of its own character. Depends on what you’re going for. I love my amp-guitar rig, a CS nocaster and Victoria bassman, so I use a KOT just to take that to the next level. It particularly shines live. I’d use the Wampler if I were playing through a backline, if that makes sense
I run my KoT v4 at 18V for extra headroom and volume, and the DIP switches are set for clean boost both sides. It's wonderful for fattening up a single coil without ruining its musicality. The Pantheon sounds really good, the bass control is a nice addition.
So, the Pantheon competes with the Prince of Tone then, not the KOT as it's not two independent circuits which is why I chose the KOT over the POT. Yes the Pantheon sounds awesome but you still may need a second drive as your base sound into a clean amp, at least I would in my case. A good alternative though, very close but what you need to know is that the KOT has internal treble trim pots, adjust these for your amp setup and this may change this review slightly. The lad owns this KOT but didn't mention if he has it setup for this amp or another. I do wish the trim pot adjuster's were above though as it's a pain in the arse.
From what I hear, the Pantheon does everything but nail the King of Tone, and the King of Tone may not do everything, but it does King of Tone. I don't feel like Mr. Wampler was really trying to step on the KOT's toes. This follows his line of taking a popular circuit and giving it more options, like he did with the Tumnus Deluxe.
Really good demo of the Pantheon. No one else even mentioned trying higher voltage with it, but you definitely got a different voice with 18 volts. Nice guys!
@@spicecrop Seems he's not on drugs, I agree and apparently so do 4 other people. Like Jack said in the video the KOT sounds flat. I thought it sounded like a blanket went on the amp when he switch to the KOT. Great thing about the Pantheon is that you can do anything from ultra light, ultra transparent overdrive, SRV, Hendrix, BB King, John mayer to stuff to Brad Paisley, Mark knopfler all the way to Heavy rock like guns n roses, slash, satriani and more. The Wampler was extremely impressive and versatile. It gets my vote!
@@daviddorrian5349 because the KOT is flat. It all depends of the guitar and the amps nature. Its not just “It sounds better”. The reason why the KOT works so well is its flat voicing. One of the few drives that works well with different guitars, different amps, different sizes of venues, different band configurations. The key word is VERSATILITY. But you only play with one guitar, through the same amp, with the same band, in the same room, you for sure can find pedals that “sounds better”.
@@goswo When I say it sounds flat I don't mean flat Eq like I like a bluesbreaker styled pedal to feel and sound. I mean sounds flat in the way it's shelving some high end and bass and taking that bouncy natural compression away from the amp. Everything you described about it is what I love about the pantheon and duellist pedal. The pantheon and duellist work with any amp, any guitar and any venue. They are insanely "versatile" from SRV, Hendrix and Mayer to Guns n roses, zeppelin and more. They've got really useful switching and eq shaping and everything from barely noticeable gain settings to boarding metal. I don't doubt in person the KOT Is an amazing thing. It couldn't have the reputation it has if it wasn't.
@@daviddorrian5349 yes it sounds great. The KOT just has its own thing, and you need to spend time tweaking it. They didnt. For some reason so many like to trash the KOT, claiming “yeah, my Boss blues driver” sounds better. And offcourse that could very well be true, but RUclips does not provide the sound and especially the dynamic feeling. There is probably af reason (as you mention) why sooo many professionals with good ears like the KOT. Because it works really well for professional use 😀 But the wampler still sounds great, so does many many others...
I like the Wampler better. More versatile to me. But I didn’t think it “copied” the KoT if that was the goal. I’ve got the Pinnacle Plus and was maybe gonna ad an OCD overdrive or a Tumnus dlx but now I’m considering Pantheon
Thank you for a thorough and transparent comparison. I think some similar YT pedal review shows have short changed the Pantheon. I have several Wampler pedals and have never had a bad one. KOT has become the standard for the BB pedals, and I thought it compared very favorably and in many ways exceeding it. The payoff is investing the time to find sweet spots.
I've only just watched this. The Pantheon is obviously extremely versatile and highly usable, but it sounds just slightly transistorised to me and edgier (slightly spittier) and even occasionally clangy, which can actually sound good with a Tele. The KOT sounds just a bit fatter and more valve-like to me. However, I agree with your point that the KOT has an inherent sound character, which can't really be dialled out. The Pantheon lets you dial frequency ranges in and out, so it's clearly more adaptable as regards sound shaping.
Both pedals sound great! I have KoT and I really love it so I'm bit partial, but it seems bit unfair to Analog Mike to position this pedal (199$) to be alternative to KoT (2 years waiting list, $265 ) given that: a) KoT is two independent ODs in one b) Analog Mike does offer Prince Of Tone ($138, usually takes a week) with similar features to Pantheon . Also, inside KoT there are dip switches to tailor clipping and treble trim pot to fine tune top end.
Brian has moved the clipping switch (voicing) and treble trim pot (presence) to the outside where it's more accessible. The gain switch is down (boost) up (drive) middle (stacked). Sounds like a great pedal to me.
Look the actual tone already dialed in with guitars and amp here is spot on, as is the playing, which is 90 percent of a great sound. That said, when the KOT is kicked in it is just always on another level. It is just what it is called. King of Tone. The Wampler is a good sounding pedal, and that is one of the better new OD I have heard, but the King is the King for a reason. On good monitor headphones it is pretty obvious.
Sounds like the Pantheon clips harder in general. Good sounding but the KoT for me just does what is does better. That being said, let’s just all celebrate the Pantheon as it’s own thing and another great pedal from Brian.
After two years I finally got my email for a KOT. Not sure I want one now after watching this, not that the Pantheon is all that cheap but I like the range it has.
Robert Shamansky a KOT on it’s own might not be enough if you like the pantheon but I pair my KOT with other pedals as a sort of boost and it makes every other drive pedal sound better - worth every penny I’ve order another one just to have a different colour!
I’m shocked that I like the Pantheon tone more than the KoT. I like that it has more tone shaping capability than the KoT does. I might actually go with the Pantheon Deluxe, which has two channels, one voice like the KoT and one closer to an original Blues Breaker, and you can blend them. Lots of flexibility.
I had the deluxe, now have the standard. The deluxe is a fine pedal, but something you should know about it, which could be a dealbreaker, is that the foot switches operate when they’re released, not when they’re pressed. In other words, when you press a foot switch, nothing happens until it’s released. If you plan to switch on the fly live it can be a real pain.
The Pantheon's eq options are the biggest difference for my taste. The KOT sometimes sounds like it lacks bass, and the Pantheon can solve that. But the comparison really isn't fair anyway - a Pantheon has more in common with a POT than with a KOT. Thanks for the GAS. :)
I've since gotten a Duke of Tone, and a Snouse Black Box -- I still want to get my hands on a Pantheon because of the 3 knob active eq section. The Duke has a pronounced bass cut -- which of course works well in certain situations, including using it with humbuckers.

KOT and Pantheon are both great pedals, similar but not identical, as expected. Even two of the same pedal sound slightly different, as you said. However...KOT costs US$265 and the Panthoen costs US$199. I can get a Pantheon today for US$65 less than a KOT (or pay double for a used KOT on Reverb or Ebay) and I have to wait many months to get a new KOT. Also, the Pantheon requires less precious pedalboard space. Given the insignificant difference in sound (maybe the Pantheon is a bit better), it's a no-brainer - Pantheon all the way. Thank you for a great vid.
Man I want a KoT so bad but I'm not currently on the wait list and don't want to pay that premium. The Wampler sounds great, yet different. Problem is, I think it sounds great as a low gain stage and a medium/high gain stage and wouldn't be able to do both at the same time. Any suggestions Peach? Great video guys!
Yep, they both are and Brian Wampler states he had both the Bluesbreaker and KoT in mind when he created the Pantheon...which is why it's it's own thing. The Wampler pedal is a blend of the nuances he likes from both its forebears.
The Wampler pantheon sounds way better ! People get hung up on names like Dumble etc. and spend 10 to $30,000 on a guitar amp that doesn't sound as good as a Redplate Blackline amp for $3,000 ! To wait years on a pedal when you have options like the Wampler pantheon is ridiculous !!!
ahr vlogs yeah and a Dumble amp is worth $10,000 to $50,000 dollars ...yeah it can take an average player and transform him into Allan Holdsworth or Guthrie Govan... that's funny...guaranteed you can take a great player like Allen Hinds or Wayne Krantz and you wouldn't know the difference between the KOT or the Wampler cuz a good or great player would sound fantastic regardless so in the grand scheme of things it's about skills and makes no sense to wait a year or whatever for a KOT when the Wampler will more than adequately do the trick for a real player !!! ...smh
@@Avatar7x7 if it works for you then with all means go for it, kot cost me $250 new so your dumble example doesn't make much sense since the KOT is actually cheaper than the pedals trying to copy it, lol
@ahr vlogs I'm talking wait time obviously ! The Dumble comparison is just an example of how some folks get caught up and tricked into bs thinking that this one piece of gear is the holy grail or rosetta stone of all tone and it's gonna magically transform your sound so radically that its worth waiting years for even though you have multiple options that are just as good and in some cases better .. meanwhile 99% of the people you play for couldn't tell the difference between the Wampler and the KOT if their life depended on it ! Not knocking nobody's personal preference I'm just saying real players have gear preferences but know there are other options and don't get hung up on one thing...A really good player could take a peavey classic 30' and a tube screamer and embarrass you and the KOT would be of no consequence even though you waited for three years for that puppy... that's hilarious... A lot of tone touch and feel comes from you !!!
@@Avatar7x7 no one said that it will make you a better player and why did you assume that people on kot wait list don't have other pedals? Obviously there is something special about the KOT that makes people aspire to own it and like anything else in life it's how demand and supply work, a Toyota can take you from point A to point B just as a Ferrari would, that doesn't stop people from buying Ferraris
Pretty cool. I think the video might have been better if you played with the dip switches inside the KoT. Anyways nothing kicks the KoT out of my board but it sound like Wampler did a great job (wouldn’t expect any less). Thanks for the video.
@@garyjinks7482 yeah, I try not to base my opinion on RUclips videos anyways, but it seemed really bright. I noticed it in the Andertons video too. They actually bmentioned that Wampler recommend the presence all the way down, but then they proceeded to run it way up for the whole video. I'm sure it's great, but I reserve judgement until I play through it.
I'm surprised it took this long for a pedal builder to come up with at work around for the legendary KOT. Both have their place, but I'm really digging the Pantheon. Although there is a midrange quality the KOT has over the Pantheon.
Nice job on the comparison. However I’m one of those who when hearing, B is as good as A, C is better than A, D has everything A has but costs less, E has more features than A, and so on, I’m just going to get A. Why? Quite obviously it just means A is the standard against which all else is measured and is reasonably your safest choice. There are an awful lot of us boring folks around just impeding the living blazes out of progress. Or perceived progress. Whatever...
Agree - they had the tone controls down on both side which is why the sampler sounded sparkier- I have one and had to wait 2.5yrs but it was worth it and I am getting another one in a different colour 🤷🏻♂️
Internal treble trim pots on the KOT are always missed in comparison reviews as they open the pedal to the current amp, but the Pantheon competes with the Prince of Tone in my opinion
Hum, not a huge fan of either? But I’m more of a gold foil pups through a sweet tube amp. Straight up. Nice vid though gentlemen! Some of the pedals lately are subtle and like other pedals and very costly. Glad I don’t have to make em, must be difficult by now to create new and usable creations in pedals?
2 years?! Try more. I’ve been on the KoT list since May 5th 2017 and they’re currently shipping to folks on September 2nd 2016. My guess is if you signed up today it’d be at least 3 years as I was told 1. Which is fine.... just be aware. Nice vid y’all. Keep em coming 🤙🏻😊
Both Great ( however ) I Prefer the Pantheon as it has so much versatility. I also like individual bass/treble controls. I now am curious to hear the Pantheon Pedal vs. a Fulltone OCD version 1.7.
Someone " Intelligent " on You Tube will Do a comprehensive comparison. PANTHEON vs. OCD. Don't worry, its coming. This pedal is for real, and worthy of comparison to the Modern Classic Fulltone OCD. You will have tons more information to help you decide or ( better ) go play em side-by-side ( if you can ). 2 OD's are better then one !!!
Is the KOT worth the price you could buy for direct from AnalogMan? Probably. Is it worth the ridiculous prices used you see in many popular sites? Unless the case is made of 24K Gold absolutely not! Same with a real Klon or Timmy. Those three are good sounding pedals but not worth the ridiculous prices sellers are asking. Many great affordable and readily available alternatives like the Pantheon for Bluesbreaker style, Klones for Klon, and transparent drives for a Timmy style. Don’t buy into the hype out there. 🤟🤟
You can’t compare a 2 stomp with a 1 stomp. It’s not fair. You should have used the Prince of Tone, like Brian said. The Pantheon It’s a nice Wampler iteration of the Bluesbreaker. It’s a different animal than the KOT.
wow, hate to say it but the Pantheon sounds WORLDS better and clearer, on top of the versatility and tweak control. Dang. I almost didn't wanna like it.
The Pantheon is based on the Blues Breaker. The King of Tone, according to Mike, is also very loosely based on the BB. Where did you guys here that Brian went out to compete (copy/clone) with the KoT with this pedal? Great demo, by the way! I sub'd.
It's very easy to look up the schematics for both. KOT has a different values in the first opamp that gives it a bit more highs, the diodes are a little different which makes it clip differently and compress in a different manner and the presence control is "fixed" in a bluesbreaker schematic instead of being variable. The two are quite similar from a topology point of view, therefore how can one not compare it to both since they the two circuits are indeed so similar?
Both great pedals. I chose option C however. I bought a Queen of Bone PCB from rullywow, put LEDs on the left side, and put 3 position switches on the face instead of the internal DIPs. sounds like the best of both of these pedals. Cost me about $40 in parts and I had it in 2 weeks.
The Wampler sounds like all Wamplers. Too bright and slightly harsh, and "sounds" like a pedal. Where the KOT sounds like an amp with more harmonics and depth. The Analogman is much more musical, amp like sounding. Plus you guys did not even utilize the internal switches that the KOT has. I foresee the KOT waiting list to still remain the same. And people still scalping them for up to $600. online. While the Wamplers will be had on Ebay at discounted prices in a few months for $140.00 Play the two in a band setting and then you will know why the KOT fetches such a high price.
Jesus has anyone watch chapman over at Andertons review this. If you haven't you need to the guys lost it. It honesty looks like hes deliberately making it sound bad
Yeah he loves heavy metal gain, and KoT is not a high gain pedal. KoT is all about fattening up a single coil without noticeable grunge, and can also add some pleasant moderate distortion.

@@johnfritzenjr.1240 KOT is also a Bluesbreaker based pedal.
John Fritzen jr. yes
Yep, they both are and Brian Wampler states he had both the Bluesbreaker and KoT in mind when he created the Pantheon...which is why it's it's own thing. The Wampler pedal is a blend of the nuances he likes from both its forebears.
nice video guys, thanks
The Wampler pantheon sounds way better ! People get hung up on names like Dumble etc. and spend 10 to $30,000 on a guitar amp that doesn't sound as good as a Redplate Blackline amp for $3,000 ! To wait years on a pedal when you have options like the Wampler pantheon is ridiculous !!!
There is a reason why KOT has a long wait time, because it's that good!
ahr vlogs yeah and a Dumble amp is worth $10,000 to $50,000 dollars ...yeah it can take an average player and transform him into Allan Holdsworth or Guthrie Govan... that's funny...guaranteed you can take a great player like Allen Hinds or Wayne Krantz and you wouldn't know the difference between the KOT or the Wampler cuz a good or great player would sound fantastic regardless so in the grand scheme of things it's about skills and makes no sense to wait a year or whatever for a KOT when the Wampler will more than adequately do the trick for a real player !!!
Pantheon should’ve put a mids knob. Really would’ve been spot on then.
if you run the KoT at 18v, there’s more than enough volume/output for cleaner settings.
Pretty cool.
I think the video might have been better if you played with the dip switches inside the KoT.
Anyways nothing kicks the KoT out of my board but it sound like Wampler did a great job (wouldn’t expect any less).
Thanks for the video.
Those are two really good pedals.
I really want to like the Pantheon, but it seems a little bright...
Wampler recommends starting with the Presence on zero and go up as desired. This video has it set too high
Oh okay okay...This is a new challenger!
Is there internal dip switches for clipping options in the KoT?
Pantheon is more along the sound I like.
Now compare these two with the Duellist.
The duellist is the true king!
I'm surprised it took this long for a pedal builder to come up with at work around for the legendary KOT. Both have their place, but I'm really digging the Pantheon. Although there is a midrange quality the KOT has over the Pantheon.
wow.. decision made at 14:55
Guys please do Pedal reviews into an affordable amp like a Fender Hot Rod. Very nice video review. I just subscribed to yer channel.
Whatever...
Maybe if they set the KOT properly you'll hear it what it actually does.
Ryan Swanson I think everything at 2/3 o clock is a good start
The pantheon is more akin to POT right, it having only 1 switch right?
Was Phillipe there?
Both have their place in the pedal world but as far as availability and versatility, it would have to be wampler for me. I still like both
Great video.
Made my own KOT instead of waiting. Interested in the Pantheon however! Smaller footprint and BIGGER TONE imho!
Nice!!!!
2 years?!
Got mine after almost 1.5y
It’s 2 years now. I’m just about to my second one now. It was 1.5. Now it’s 2.
@@Thomasdgolden that's really long
ahr vlogs Yes. But it’s worth it. It costs nothing to get on the list. Your time comes up before you think.
@@Thomasdgolden yeah true, it's not like you will stop playing until you get it anyway, so many good pedals in the market now
BB PreAmp is waiting for a versus..
Not sure if you mean against these pedals but the BB Preamp is not a bluesbreaker style circuit. Closer to Screamer or OCD territory
Caline Orange Burst.
Both Great ( however ) I Prefer the Pantheon as it has so much versatility. I also like individual bass/treble controls. I now am curious to hear the Pantheon Pedal vs. a Fulltone OCD version 1.7.
Michael Caz OCD was next on my list but now I don’t know
Someone " Intelligent " on You Tube will Do a comprehensive comparison.
Thanks - maybe I'll do that on my channel. It's a great idea. Shoot them out, and send the loser back to Sweetwater. :)
Big fan of Wampler’s pedals but when you play like that it is hard not to sound good anyway!
Jack is becoming one of my favorite guitar players, does anyone know his full name?
You can find him here: ruclips.net/user/jackgriffithsmusic
I’ve never seen these guys but man I dig both of these guys 🤘😎
Suhr badger 30?
Pantheon rules.
wow, hate to say it but the Pantheon sounds WORLDS better and clearer, on top of the versatility and tweak control. Dang. I almost didn't wanna like it.
The King of Tone just slays the Pantheo in my opinion. Pantheo sounds like a pedal, King of Tone sounds and feel like a really good amp.
YuP. No need to comment other than, YuP.
Hahaha
It only took 23 months for my turn.
wampler sounds MUCH better
Both sound good but KOT for me
The Pantheon is based on the Blues Breaker. The King of Tone, according to Mike, is also very loosely based on the BB. Where did you guys here that Brian went out to compete (copy/clone) with the KoT with this pedal? Great demo, by the way! I sub'd.
Hi Dale, Wampler told us and it actually says it's inspired by the King of Tone and BB on the box.
Brian with the tech specs!! Boom
KOT sounds SO MUCH better...
Mr P. Thanks for your input
Hotzenplotz no, yes, no, yes, no,
Yes... it’s just my point of view. So...cool ;-).
@@Donaldo2024 YES!
No way!
Prefer the Wampler!
A bit of nitpicking...your necklace was constantly banging against your lapel mic. 😉
Love the channel. Cheers from Maryland, USA
Sounds on the intro are incredible
WAMPLER...... FAR MORE VERSATILE !!!
Pantheon 🤩
Both great pedals. I chose option C however. I bought a Queen of Bone PCB from rullywow, put LEDs on the left side, and put 3 position switches on the face instead of the internal DIPs. sounds like the best of both of these pedals. Cost me about $40 in parts and I had it in 2 weeks.
The KoT has some cool snake oil, but I think the Pantheon is the winner for me.
Why?
Pantheon is the winner
IMHO, the pantheon crushes the KOT. it’s not even close…. Even allowing for the KOT’s internal switches, the pantheon covers more ground.
KOT looks better...
And people still scalping them for up to $600. online. While the Wamplers will be had on Ebay at discounted prices in a few months for $140.00 Play the two in a band setting and then you will know why the KOT fetches such a high price.
spicecrop what does more musical mean?
Jesus has anyone watch chapman over at Andertons review this. If you haven't you need to the guys lost it. It honesty looks like hes deliberately making it sound bad
Chapman makes most pedals sound bad
Yeah he loves heavy metal gain, and KoT is not a high gain pedal. KoT is all about fattening up a single coil without noticeable grunge, and can also add some pleasant moderate distortion.
