Hello, I have the both the Blink and Arlo security system. Each has its pros and cons. Blink was easy to install (I mean real easy, even instructed my sister to install over the phone). Battery is easy to replace but they take a special battery from Energizer - ultimate lithium. Expensive but they do last a long time. When they loose connection with the internet, mine do take awhile to connect back. Biggest con for me is that you can view only one camera at a time. The Arlo you can view all cameras simultaneously. This makes it easier to view where the problem is. Turning on the cameras for a live view takes a time - Blink one at a time vs Arlo all cameras simultaneously. Arlo was harder to set up. Once set up they work fine. Arlo has rechargeable batteries but they need to be recharged 2-3 times a year depending on activity. I love them both for different reasons. I also would have selected Blink due to the installation. I just wish it reacted quicker and could view all cameras simultaneously. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for this. Arlo is exactly what I need as I'm in my vehicle a lot. And a camera isn't any good if it alerts me as things happens. I want to see it before anything happens. And since I'm parked around an active scene, being alerted is just annoying. This function is only useful once I leave my van on a dry run.
I have wyze cameras in my home. You can see all of them at the same time but they dont have as many options as far as shape. Its just square or tall rectangle. Nothing low profile or discreet unless they made something new. I bought mine years ago.
@user-kf4gt7bo2k my mom has several wyze cameras and from my understanding they require to be plugged into a outlet. Is that the case for you? The Arlo and blink are battery operated and they have the freedom to go just about anywhere. I like wyze as well but they didn't suit our needs. Thank you
Interesting option. I'd position a camera to cover each side of the van so that I could see around when all the window covers are in place. I watched a video from a female vanlifer describing some of her security, including this. I'd also research a GPS tracking system. Campervibe had a gadget installed that manually locks the shift transmission on their van.
I concur with you on this Blink system. It works great, just like you said. I surprised my gardener when I spoke to him as he passed my camera attached to my van. He thought it was a ghost.
My brother uses Blink Camera system at his place of business and loves them. The camera has a microphone and speaker in them and he uses them to keep the Unwants out. They do also give him alerts if they detect motion. You do need internet systems and Always use lithium batteries. Great product
I don't have feedback on security systems, but I love your channel. You do quality work. (I learned a lot from you when building our own van.) You are informative and easy to follow. You move a long quickly-- no endless gabbing. I only wish you did more videos. PS -- Now I'm leery about visiting CA.
Always on point... I went with blink in my build but didn't realize about the base - I have three dedicated cameras all connected to the vans Nighthawk 5g router..... great more pieces to buy - Tx SevenO..... ;) ... more content - add in some RC Stuff !!
Hi. I use blink at home and now considering adding to my transit custom camper. Only issue I've had is that unless you add rubber aftermarket weather protection, after a couple of years you find your internals rusted out. Good video thank you. From rainy U.K.
It pleases me that I could make your day, that wasn't the reason, but it was a nice one, I just was concerned with your health because adults do that when your kid don't keep in touch, maybe selfish but I became attracted to you and your psyche by watching you videos and enjoyed your teachings. Your quite the swav-a and deboner way of teaching, your also EYE CANDY. Just happy your safe and alive. You are a special person and you make me proud that I know you. Lots of love. Afriend.
Just watched and since I'm looking for something to use in our teardrop when we are hiking, the Blink seemed ideal. Popped over to Amazon and WOW, the number of negative reviews is daunting. You need a subscription to record, adequate band width (something about 5G) and the poor reliability and you would need internet, so for us that would mean one of our smart phones as a hotspot or something like a Jetpack from Verizon.
Good informative video. Ordered my blink system after watching your video on Amazon Black Friday sale. Not tech savvy so your video helped. Keep up the good work
I used this Blink camera system for my business with business WIFI, as well as my for Cargo Van (with Verizon 5G Internet). They are work well, last long and simple to setup.
Thanks big time for the review and ultimate how you installed your Blink System, I am all about Blink for homes and now will role them out to our new Roadtrek Play camper van.
Id love some elaboration on the wifi neccessity! If my hotspots out of signal range, does that mean I don't get camera footage? Does signal constantly going in/out mean I'll have to reconnect the cameras often? Thanks for the vid!
Thank you so much for the video. I have decided to install a 5 camera system onn my storyteller overland mode 4x4 van with the doorbell as well because of your detailed description of how to use it. Thank you, Thank you ...THANK YOU!!!
Sounds great. I need a security system. My problem is the requirement that the van have a WIFI connection. How do I do that? I don't have Starlink (yet).
you had a good advantage since your van roof is high up. you can have a 4 way compass monitor security system. Unfortunetly I have a suv CRV - with the gps tracking, drive cameras for scammers. and sensor alarms that even if you try to break or wiggle a bit of my car. it will set off a lot of sounds within. I wanna try blink cameras when I get a toyota sienna or subrbanan with the roof rack up and just attach them on my cargo box :3
Awesome video! We're looking at the Wyze cameras. One thing I didn't see in this video (maybe I missed it, I am working while watching) was the amount of data being used and how that could impact your data caps for van lifers using hot spots for internet. I know for Wyze if you are live streaming it will use 4-7MB per min for HD or 1-2MB for standard definition video. They also will send 12s clips of video to the cloud if motion is detected with the detection feature enabled. Each clip would be roughly 800KB - 1.4MB for HD and 200KB - 400KB for SD. Since most van lifers use a data plan for internet this may add up to a large portion of internet use. Something to definitely look into! Also, I would be scared that a thief would attempt to break in, notice the camera right at the door and just take the low hanging fruit and leave xD hopefully that doesn't happen!
Please make more videos! Travel, life, build, adventures! Question, the Wi-Fi on the road… do you have starlink? Thanks for making a video about this. I’m so freaked out about theft. I also live in a city with rampant crime! 🤦🏼♂️
What about clear film to keep thugs to break the glass windows, all of them? Which window film do you request? Also to stop thugs to breaking into the doors? Cindy
Whqt about general dual or rear backup cameras that may work in addition to one of these models? Any idea what might be good to pair eith what or a separate power source for 24/7 recording?
I have 6 of the blink mini cameras as well! I absolutely LUV them! I have them around my apartment suite. I have one facing at my entrance door so I know if anyone is entering (breaking in) to my suite while I'm away, as well as one facing the building entrance door on my side of the building (inside pointing out through the window) & 2 monitoring the parking lot! I also put 2 in another tenants suite facing both directions of the main entrance door on his side of the building. I monitor those as well. They are as easy as you say! I would like to purchase more & add them to the inside of the apartment, one inside facing in the direction of each of the entry doors (that would be 2) & one in the laundry room. No, we do not live in the safest neighborhood. We have suffered break-ins & theft & our landlord/owner is the cheapest neglectful one I've ever come across.
Awesome, good to hear they are working... I want to figure out how to disguise and embed them in natural things, tissue paper containers, etc, so the thugs don't see it immediately or at all. My goal is to get them arrested not to scare them off. So I love the idea of getting video of their faces.💪
@@LJ-jq8og I love the idea of disguising them. Especially in a natural setting. Mine are the minis and are only for indoor use. I'm on the 2nd floor, so anyone on the ground can't see that they are in the window. Also, because they are the minis (small), they fit right in the upper nook of the corner of the window & I don't see any of the window frames in any of the cameras that I have facing out. I LUV the fact that you can speak through them as well. I have spoken to an intruder (another selfish rude thieving tenant who is now in jail & not living in our building anymore) who broke into my suite while I was out one day. After I called another neighbor to let the cops in (24 hr locked doors, no buzzers), I called the cops & reported it, all while I was watching her and once they were on their way, I called out through the camera "Busted"! I called it out a few times. Seriously, the quality of the videos is clear, and you can define colours wonderfully well. And you get sound in the videos too. So you can hear the intruders talking & rumaging.
@@tamo9520 That is so freaking funny ! Great work.... You nailed another democrat 💪 I would give anything to see her face 😂 Landlords don't care unless they are getting sued....
What ever you put out I will watch. I'm hoping your well have heard from you in a while, just check in with us every now and again, just to make sure your alive and well. Hope your full filling your dreams. Lots of love. Afriend.
Put "window film" on your windows, comes in clear to black out. It will keep your window from crashing into your van. They say bullet proof but it really was hammer & rock proof. If the windows don't shatter all over but stay in place it's a, your not climbing in deterrent.
As Always, Luv your vid and expertise. My “base plan” was the use of a ‘pain generator’ in the cockpit area. High decibel siren mounted in headliner that would be activated by motion, door opening, or glass breakage. I have extra ‘back-up’ cameras for exterior, from trial and error purchases, that are adequate for exterior ‘surveillance’. The challenge for Both of the above is control ‘modules’, that I have yet to understand/find to implement my ‘system’. Your concept in this video is outstanding in that it covers all of it with the exception of my ‘pain generator’ (which I really want … punish n’er do wells with some hearing loss [permanently]). The Only concern that I have with the blink is sourcing Inexpensive Wi-Fi with near-excellent location coverage … I know, not asking for much 😒 If any of your smart subscribers have thoughts on my ‘base plan’, I’d love to hear it. If I am unable to button that plan up with the controllers, I will Definitely be going Blink 👍🏼. I would just like to (Try) using what I have …
I am still waiting on my van build. We have Eufy for the home. So I purchased 4 Eufy Solo cam E40 cameras and 4 strong magnetic mounts (from Amazon) for them. I also purchased some black silicone covers for the cameras so that they will be stealth. I also have Starlink RV. I plan on just using the cameras and Starlink when parked. Hopefully I can mount them high enough so that they will be somewhat stealth and harder to cover or steal.
I’m going to look into adding something like this to my van. I’m in Florida but the van gets a lot of attention everywhere we go.. and it’s always positive attention from curious people, but I’d rather be safe and have some deterrents in place besides the alarm and other security features I have
This was exactly what I was looking for thank you so much for this information😊BTW I had to subscribe to your channel again just so you know! Thanks again ☮️
I would tell the Blink system to add a future that has a way to turn on ur lights in recording while away in the van so the footage has good face recognition shots. The down side to motion lights is the thief will see ur possessions easily.
I use blink. If you setup IFTTT on you phone you can have them auto arm and disarm with you walking away and back to your van via it disconnecting and connecting to wifi.
Very cool idea and very important. But my big question! What about the battery life!? Do you have to go up there every 2 weeks? That would be a bit much for me. Also lithium batteries would be best for performance, but they aren't that great below freezing right?
Great option for enhancing security but important to regard this as just one link in a greater strategy. Ie. I would never park even the crappiest junker and leave it for even an hour anywhere in SF City! So as an owner of a similar system there are a lot of areas where even the best video security won't perform as well as one would hope -- primarily due to the dedication and craftiness of the average thief/tweaker. (Is that being redundant?) So a couple top points: 1. A tweaker will normally obscure its face and head with hoodie, face mask and dark glasses 2. A tweaker will normally obscure its license plates and/or park far enough away you won't ever even see its vehicle (if it even has one!)
Nice, I am looking around and don't want to be tied to repeat payments to use ... one I used years ago was free at first and then they switched to a charge system... a perfect "bait and switch" ... when will people get back good ethics and good integrity? thanks for the review.. will consider..
So how does it instantly upload to the Cloud? The parking areas that I’m worried about might have 0-1 bar of cell signal. Certainly never any WiFi available. Is it assumed that we already have some form of mobile WiFi on the vehicle?
I use the same cameras. They do what you need them too do. Not very expensive if they get taken and they will notify you while it’s happening so you can potentially stop it. Best value by far.
Do you notice any issues with the Wi-Fi connection from inside the van? I'm worried that it will act like a Faraday cage and not have a good connection
I keep a handy spare android phone hidden & wired-up in the van, it offers wifi & gps; Could I use blink's movement detector to contact my main mobile without a subscription? I could plug it intop the blink USB if helpfull (& if the phone's memory can do the video recording)
Do you have the cameras outside on all 4 sides of the van? I am curious are you using the inside mount and the bendable mount? I want to see what is going on all around my van so trying to figure out the best option. Great video!
The 2 year battery life is with minimal activation, but if you park at parking lots a lot it will activate all the time and probably last 2 months no? That’s why I just ordered 6 blink 2 mini wired for my van.
If you start talking to thieves/intruders through your cameras : 1. your voice gives away the position of the cameras, so thieves may attempt block visual or destroy cameras 2. making the thieves aware may deprive you from recording details like faces that would be caught, hadn't you alerted them. 3. The speakers are useful to communicate with friendlies though
Chris I want to go your route to attach my wall panels with the "Velcro". Did it work well or did you need to add extra adhesive to the metal side of the tape?
Is there a way to make these work in a local, off grid fashion? If I were camping off-grid, could I connect them to a local wifi router on board and see the cameras from a tablet or phone that is connected to the wifi network?
Awwwe man! Finally someone praises the 3M Dual Lock! It's AWESOME! I don't know why not many people knows of this, I originally was looking for something to mount my portable amp to my phone, came across dual lock from InnerFedelity on YT, it's AWESOME! This Blink system seems pretty damn cool, affordable and easy! I'll to check into their privacy policy etc, you know these days... Great video, I don't own a van but I do follow you to learn so when I do decide to get one! I'll have a huge leg up, happy new years! Thanks!
Great video! I have this idea. You mount a pole on top of the van. With a hinge to lay it down or removable when driving. When the pole is extended upright, maybe you only need 2 back to back Blink cameras mounted to it? Will that provide a 360 view with minimal cameras?
So much paranoia with a van in CA! Im focusing on this very early on in my build. My issue with wifi cameras for security is that wifi can be defeated with a pocket sized jammer. I dislike walled garden systems for privacy and upgradability. I live in break-in central, and ill be installing ONVIF/RTSP cameras on a POE system, with a small single board computer running Frigate and Home Assistant. These will all run directly off the DC bus. This will allow for NVR, cloud backups, and alerts. Im designing my security as an integrated system, with an aftermarket two way alarm, thunderbolt and puck locks, and a camera and presence detection system with its own LTE modem for alerts. An added plus to using my own SBC, I will be able to integrate my own glass break and motion/presence detection.
Planning the same with HA and Frigate on a HP T530. Not decided yet which camera's. In my garden to check for birds I use the Eufy Indoor 2K, build in a PVC pipe, works great, but a little to big imo for the roofrack.
YES, you cannot be too careful. Especially living in lefty land. You are guaranteed to have people try and break in. Sadly, you need to remember that no matter where you park it when you live in that area it is ultra high risk. But it sounds like you're putting in a great system. I would also design into your build plans places to put laptops iPads, and wallets that are seamless and counterintuitive so if somebody does break in, they can't find them easily. One of my ideas was to have old junk or huge Apple laptops and iPads that were broken and leave those readily findable. That way the lefty thugs, find a bunch of "treasure" but don't realize that you are decoying them with pure crap. They will feel like they hit it big and bail out of the vehicle sooner than later. This way your good stuff is hidden away, built into the frame of the interior. Good luck and be prepared for having to get new windows on a regular basis.
@@ijsvogels_nl yes, the right form factor for automotive appears to be a challenge. The analog cameras used for vehicle backup and security seem to be the right size, but one would need to add a video server to convert the analog video to an rtsp stream. The vivotek video servers might work well. Heads up, Eufy were found to be sending data back to company servers!
@@vandal144 Will check that Vivotek out. I'm gonna check out ESP32cam and Raspberry camera's as well, I don't want to be independent for firmware of other companies.
@@LJ-jq8og vandalism and crime are not isolated to a political spectrum, but rather based on location, scale and opportunity. No one is going to ransack a run down trailer park.
Very good information. I currently have a 4 channel dash camera with some security features. You can view live stream at a short distance, but anything beyond a house length, it is totally useless! It has no alert features. It really good for crashes or police though. But I need something that I can see and be alerted. I work in my van a lot. So I need to see footage simultaneously. Question? Can this camera rotate to different cameras simultaneously and automatically?
I think this is an incredibly helpful video but what will keep someone from stealing your security system if it’s just held on with Velcro and zip ties?
Great video, Bro! I'm gettin' the Blink Mini System....THANKS! ** If I get the 5 Cam Mini System, can I disable say 1 or 2 Cams leaving the 4 outdoor Cams still on?
i was going to go every way u said until i started finding wireless solar cams that you can mount on your roof and then just mount and plug the monitor inside the van and you got a wireless CCTV cam system. Check amazon but that was the direction i was going to go unless starlink gets stuff figured out for my area this year.
Very informative, as always. How much is the angle of view for each camera? If to install several like you did on roof rack, how many cameras are needed to eliminate blind spots?
Great and informative video. A side question. Unrelated, what is the make of the window you are sitting next to? I believe it is the same frame as the plexi glass one I have on my Westy, which is cracking and needs replacement. Thank you in advance if anyone knows please comment.

Put "window film" on your windows, comes in clear to black out. It will keep your window from crashing into your van. They say bullet proof but it really was hammer & rock proof. If the windows don't shatter all over but stay in place it's a, your not climbing in deterrent.
plastic zipties will degrade from weather and UV then snap randomly. use metal zip ties.
This is awesome! I feel like this is the one mod on your channel I could actually do😂
As Always, Luv your vid and expertise.
The Only concern that I have with the blink is sourcing Inexpensive Wi-Fi with near-excellent location coverage … I know, not asking for much 😒
If any of your smart subscribers have thoughts on my ‘base plan’, I’d love to hear it. If I am unable to button that plan up with the controllers, I will Definitely be going Blink 👍🏼. I would just like to (Try) using what I have …
NICE Product Review. You did the research for me and now I need to place this on my Things to Do List for the New Year😎👍👍⬆️‼️
I am still waiting on my van build.
I’m in Florida but the van gets a lot of attention everywhere we go.. and it’s always positive attention from curious people, but I’d rather be safe and have some deterrents in place besides the alarm and other security features I have
Thanks!
Thank you!!
This was exactly what I was looking for thank you so much for this information😊BTW I had to subscribe to your channel again just so you know! Thanks again ☮️
Super sick product! Love how easy, inexpensive and user friendly every aspect is!
I would tell the Blink system to add a future that has a way to turn on ur lights in recording while away in the van so the footage has good face recognition shots. The down side to motion lights is the thief will see ur possessions easily.
Verry nice video. how do you get wifi when on the road? from your phone?
I use blink. If you setup IFTTT on you phone you can have them auto arm and disarm with you walking away and back to your van via it disconnecting and connecting to wifi.
The simulation really put it into perspective 😂
Very cool idea and very important. But my big question! What about the battery life!? Do you have to go up there every 2 weeks? That would be a bit much for me. Also lithium batteries would be best for performance, but they aren't that great below freezing right?
Glad to see you still making videos about your van
Great option for enhancing security but important to regard this as just one link in a greater strategy. Ie. I would never park even the crappiest junker and leave it for even an hour anywhere in SF City! So as an owner of a similar system there are a lot of areas where even the best video security won't perform as well as one would hope -- primarily due to the dedication and craftiness of the average thief/tweaker. (Is that being redundant?)
So a couple top points:
1. A tweaker will normally obscure its face and head with hoodie, face mask and dark glasses
You have a new subscriber, nice topic, Thanks Bro.
Thanks for doing the research. I appreciate the work. I’m an Flight Attendant that lives out of a sprinter.
Hey Seven , do you have an update on how your link security system and how well it has been working for you? thanks in advance!
Cool info. Thank you. And I can use it with a cellphone with hot spot?
I keep a handy spare android phone hidden & wired-up in the van, it offers wifi & gps;
Could I use blink's movement detector to contact my main mobile without a subscription?
I could plug it intop the blink USB if helpfull (& if the phone's memory can do the video recording)
Do you have the cameras outside on all 4 sides of the van? I am curious are you using the inside mount and the bendable mount? I want to see what is going on all around my van so trying to figure out the best option. Great video!
The 2 year battery life is with minimal activation, but if you park at parking lots a lot it will activate all the time and probably last 2 months no? That’s why I just ordered 6 blink 2 mini wired for my van.
Is having wifi in the van required for any use or just to check the cameras remotely? Thanks!
If you start talking to thieves/intruders through your cameras :
1. your voice gives away the position of the cameras, so thieves may attempt block visual or destroy cameras
2. making the thieves aware may deprive you from recording details like faces that would be caught, hadn't you alerted them.
3. The speakers are useful to communicate with friendlies though
Chris I want to go your route to attach my wall panels with the "Velcro". Did it work well or did you need to add extra adhesive to the metal side of the tape?
Thanks for your video’s. Do you use no nightvision because of the rubbers for the tyraps?
Great advice, you got yourself a subscriber
Is there a way to make these work in a local, off grid fashion? If I were camping off-grid, could I connect them to a local wifi router on board and see the cameras from a tablet or phone that is connected to the wifi network?
Great video! I use the Blink system as well. It works great!
I've been searching for a dash cam for a van. Wondering if something like these could have dual use?
Love blink cameras. Use them at the house. Doorbells, flood light, doggie door and dog’s room.
Thank you, Cindy 👋
I don’t see the link to the window mount that you mentioned. The one that’s inside. Did I just miss it?
I think this is an incredibly helpful video but what will keep someone from stealing your security system if it’s just held on with Velcro and zip ties?
They wouldn't last long in California. Use them from the inside out.
I purchased the blink system as well, affordable and easy to setup was the deciding factor or me as well.
Great video, Bro! I'm gettin' the Blink Mini System....THANKS! ** If I get the 5 Cam Mini System, can I disable say 1 or 2 Cams leaving the 4 outdoor Cams still on?
Looks like a brilliant and cost effective product 👌
Cheers for this.
i was going to go every way u said until i started finding wireless solar cams that you can mount on your roof and then just mount and plug the monitor inside the van and you got a wireless CCTV cam system. Check amazon but that was the direction i was going to go unless starlink gets stuff figured out for my area this year.
Cool content. Will have to look into this. Thanks.
Very informative, as always. How much is the angle of view for each camera? If to install several like you did on roof rack, how many cameras are needed to eliminate blind spots?
Awesome video! I will use this system!
Is it possible to add a dash cam to this setup?😊
Great and informative video. A side question. Unrelated, what is the make of the window you are sitting next to? I believe it is the same frame as the plexi glass one I have on my Westy, which is cracking and needs replacement. Thank you in advance if anyone knows please comment.
Wow what great information thank you! Just what I needed!
Wondering how many weeks it took before someone pulled off the velcroed cams on the side of the van!
Do you know if the blink mini can be plugged straight into a USB port for power, can’t seem to find anything on their site
How is the battery life? How do you keep it from picking things up while in transit? Thanks
HI there. How do you manage to run your cameras with wifi? Can you use your mobile hot spot as a wifi when you are away from the van? Thank you!
I’d like to know that as well
Thanks. Can the blink be used as a dashcam?
Which Van Model is this ? make and year ? Love it
Thank you for sharing. What's the best wifi while traveling?
Amazing video. Subscribed and liked. Thank you
How much data will a camera use on hotspot
Hi! Great video. A few questions:
- can it set a motion alarm (either to your phone or outside the van itself?)
- what happens thru the app when someone dies approach?
Thanks !
Great recommendation, on a side note what did you go with for an awning?
It’s a fiamma manual one!
