Hello Russ, thanks for another great video. I am a 73 years young boy from Sweden and I have learnt a lot during the last year from your very informative videos. I bought my first drone, a Mavic Pro one year ago, sold it and now planning to buy a Mavic 2 Zoom. Looking forward to see and learn more from your future videos.
Thank you for the IMU Calibration. I first noticed a need for “something” when the Pro would drift ever so slightly to starboard. Even when I watched my use of the right stick carefully, the aircraft still drifted even if but a minute amount. Next, I noticed when using RTH, (yes, I use RTH, I like it, and yes, I can fly by the map insert) that the aircraft wouldn’t land exactly where it left terra firma from. Close enough, but increasingly becoming less precise. Today, flew out to a lighthouse over water (it does work, keep your altitude at 50’ or more) and I received a rather stern warning of high winds, and to land ASAP. This took place at sunrise, there is no wind at sunrise! Incidentally, I was receiving wind warnings more and more frequently. These circumstances are your proverbial “sign”. Best to heed them if you are attached to your aircraft. Performed an IMU Calibration. Lifted off, gained about a hundred feet in altitude, and 25 yards away from home point, and executed a RTH. The aircraft landed to within an inch or so (by visual reference) from the takeoff point. That’s what it did brand new out of the box. So, if others are experiencing these issues, I would proffer that 51 Drones is onto something here. Also, to ensure my table was level, I bought a $4 level from a major home store. The level checks both axes simultaneously. I keep that level in the carry case in the event I need it out in the field.
Holy Cow Russ - I have been watching ever since last Christmas when the Mrs. got me a Pro - Great lady. Lately my drone has been acting up and I was concerned - I had a fly away and within 5 seconds it was going away from me like a spoiled brat in the store. It took off and I wasn't touching the controls. I saw it was dropping down near trees and I hit the RTH !!!! Thank God it stopped! I remember you always saying " Take the time to do the RTH. I even do it when I do a battery change. So the next 5 or so take off's I didn't go over 10 off the ground. I noticed when it would hover, it would slowly rise a ft. or two. It was the IMU ! Thank you so much for the tip to the recalibrate IMU...… it saved the drone but I am still gun shy and take my time when I launch.
Thank you Russ for your prompt reply, I’ll calibrate the thumb sticks, as you suggested....since I always calibrate the compas every time I will fly my drone. Thanks again be safe out there flying...
Dear Russ, I am new to your channel but when i saw one of your clip by chance through youtube, i got fall in love with your educational clips, they are so nice and easy to understand, straight away i have subscribed to your channel, the other thing which i really love about you is that your honesty, you always give feedback about products with sincerity, i have watched other people channels, i got confused a lot but your clips, love them all, i am going to stick with you and watch your clips. Love your funny throwing the ball part in the end of the clip. Keep up the good work.
Your videos are fantastic! Very precise, to the point and easy to understand. I’ve picked up so much valuable information regarding my Mavic Pro watching your videos. Please continue them... I know it takes a lot of time & effort but rest assured a LOT of drone users appreciate what you do. Thank you SO MUCH for your time and effort. Phil Kentucky
Hi Russ. Thanx for having this very important video as a bunch of folks just care about sharing their footage and Not the inner workings of the Telemetry and keeping our expensive toys safe for another day. I am still learning at 55, lol, but am grateful for folks like yourself willing to still teach us older dogs new tricks. Thanx~
As always, a lot of great information here. Also, remember, if you go to another location that is a good distance from where you normally fly you may have to calibrate the compass also due to the magnetic declination change from one location to another. We have to do that all the time with our M210. Even just a couple of counties away will require it.
Thank you so much for bringing precision landing to light Russ and for the shout out ! Very well stated and articulated. I’ve had a ton of comments on my video where I accidentally discovered it was missing. Thank you for bringing a positive message not only about precision landing but all you do for the drone community. Definitely sharing 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎
First time I needed to calibrate my IMU on my M2Pro. Got to the end of your instructional video (great by the way), and I just had to laugh. What was taking so long?! Ha ha, looked at the images a little closer and figured it out finally! I don't feel so alone since watching your video. I love your channel BTW.
I appreciate everything you do for us flyers, including balancing your time with us and your family. From one father to another Thank You! Its hard to balance my drone and starting up my drone business with my daughter so iam sure its not easy for you so again Thank You.
Mr. Russ, You certainly lead the pack in quality tutorials for people like myself - a true newbie. Concerning your comments at the end of your video about what computer to use, I am a advocate of using a desktop with a large monitor. I have a Dell Desktop with a 27" monitor for viewing. I found out that many of the laptop viewing screens are not color corrected with any consistency. I learned this after trying to do post processing of still images with Adobe Lightroom. Try it yourself, Russ and see what a difference a large screen in Image quality.
Confidence... That's my man! I crashed my drone (M Air) and I think the IMU was the problem. For a small amount, DJI sent me a new one and It fly much better. With my first, I was getting the motor and high wind errors messages. None with the new one. After my first crash, I was very insecure but with the new one, confidence is coming back. :) Take care Russ
Hey Russ! Like always you provide valuable information. I've had my Mavic 2 Pro a little over a month and had issues with calibrating my IMU. Lets just say placing the drone on the port side first verses the starboard side made all of the difference. Thanks again. Two thumbs up!
Thanks Russ - Great video as always. I had a cheap copy of the Mavic Pro as my starter drone and had it just zoom away and lodge itself 20 metres up a tree on its very first flight. It took a week to get the equipment together and get it out of the tree! It did that when I pressed the RTH button (I have no idea where it thought its home was?)! I fully agree with your comments about being able to rely on RTH and precision landing when you are new to Drones, as that gave me so little confidence in the Drone, I boxed it, put it in my loft and saved up to buy a real Mavic Pro. It was such a relief to see my new Mavic go through the correct and expected motions when I pressed the RTH button and to have it fly down to exactly where it came from. It meant that I could get on with learning how to fly it without wondering if I needed tree climbing equipment again ....
I am nearly 66years of age and have been using/ building computers for about 39 years and flying drones for a few as well, have three DJI models ie Phantom 3 Pro, Mavic Air, and a Mavic 2 Pro. My Pro 2 doesn't have Precision Landing BUT still, it lands within an inch or two of where it takes off from. Great Drone !!! Bob. Ps Now am going to sell the Phantom and the Air as the Mavic 2 Pro doe's everything that I need it to do.
Bob, look for the firmware update (it may auto-load and you might visually miss it) Anyway, it's supposed to fix the precision landing feature. I only have a Spark, but you can check dji forums.
fyi- i'm totally new to drones so what I do to learn is use the RTH feature and when it is about 5ft. landing I simply cancel the landing and take over to personally land the drone. So far it works for me and it gives me practice on landing. The RTH feature is great in my opinion to at least get it in the line of site and very near where I launched.
Russ, that was a great first shot and the 17 th. one too. Lol Thanks for the great and informative video! Interesting to know about the IMU affecting the location accuracy as far as landing as well as giving a false high wind warning often. Thanks for making things easier for the rest of us! I also agree with you and Bill the Drone Reviewer about accurate landing especially for the many people who cannot walk or cannot walk far. Thanks for everything you do for the Drone Community!
Excellent vlog! Glad you did return to the issue of precious landing when you did because you are now able to offer a perspective that all the other RUclipsrs did not; the confidence theme. B/T/W, love the bloopers!😂
Another great informative video that’s holding up over time. Thanks! @14:00 regarding John‘s comment, I happen to edit the footage on Lumafusion on my iPad Pro from 2018. Smooth as butter if those are the only options you really need. I can still add LUTs as well.
Thanks Russ very good video you right on about putting the drone in the right position I miss it up everytime and like you said I waited 5 to 10 minuets before moving the drone in a difference position and yes if you are have problems just do a IMU Calibration it just mite save you a lot of time. Thanks Again Russ have a great weekend
Thanks for another great video. I am glad someone is around my age flying drones thought I was crazy looking at all you young people flying. Tommy Sallstedt
Great video! I just got my Mavic Pro a few weeks ago. Even though I haven’t used the Return to Home feature, and probably won’t, I believe it’s good to have. I’m definitely going to calibrate my IMU more often just to ensure proper operation.
Great video Russ. Didn’t realize the IMU calibration could rectify the wind warnings especially when these pop up at low altitudes in calm conditions. Will give it a try and the bloopers are great! I don’t believe the kids thought you could ever pull it off twice.
Thanks for another great video Russ. We really appreciate you taking the time to explain things. Although I have never used precision landing it should help those out there that rely on it to start to gain confidence in landing without it.
Thanks for posting this. My Mavic Air has been exhibiting many of these flight attributes...with only a dozen flights or so. I am going to do this tomorrow. Yes we are interested in your editing computer specs and such...please do a video on it. 51 thanks! Great stuff!
Great video. I recently got the mavic 2 zoom. Not super concerned about the lack of precision landing as I usually land it manually. I'm sure it'll be added later. Very happy with it so far. Traded up from the Air and the battery life alone was worth it.
Great video and very informative. My Zoom is only a couple of weeks old and no issues but if I see any symptoms that you described I'll be sure to calibrate the IMU.
Thank you for all of these videos Russ. I'm learning a great deal from your videos and others too. My Mavic Pro will be here in a couple of days so I'm trying to be ready. Loved the bloopers at the end. Thanks for a good laugh. Now if my old brain can retain all of this information. My brain is much older then olddogg60 would indicate. :-)
Hi Russ. Brilliant opening scene, really demonstrates the point. Just a small point regarding your comments about leaving the props on during IMU calibration, I think DJI advise removal as a safety precaution in the event of some sort of “hiccup “ . IF the drone did fire up it would damage itself at the very least. For the sake of x seconds removing and replacing the quick fit props I would always advise caution. I also advise starting the controller first before the drone so you have control should it suddenly decide to take off. Don’t mean to preach but some youngsters may experience problems and it’s always good to minimise risks. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, looking forward to the next. Take care and catch you later.Peter
Fair play....bit of an own goal there on DJIs part I guess. Just waiting for my MP2 Pro to arrive & can’t wait to see how it compares with my “old” Mavic....liked your idea of tracking one drone with another, might give it a go when the great English weather improves!😂😂
I think you're right with the precision landing. It should always be there and I hate that it's not there for the Mavic 2 and I really hope they will add it. I have even more problems: The drone sees the dronepad as an obstacle when I try to land and drifts away from it all the time
Recently bought a Mavic 2 Zoom. Suddenly realized I have to edit videos.... Some 20 years ago I taught at low level in Premiere. Discovered the pricing model of Adobe and found DaVinci Resolve instead, that I am now using. I use the free version, but there is a Studio version also. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and Jason Bourne are just two of the movies edited and colored in DaVinci Resolve.
Thank you for the awesome video. I've been watching your videos for a while and have gained alot of info from them. I have a similar issue with my mavic air and almosg returned it. I will try calibrating thr imu and hopefully it works
Here is something that may seem dumb! But i use many drones some DJI some others all high end drones in my travels around the world. and all have GPS yet every time i put them up for the first time in a new country i never let them get out of my eye sight. Scares me thinking hope GPS work here lol. confidence!! is the difference between great shot and a average shot. Great video.
👍🏻 that’s my left thumb because my right got in the way of a prop after my drone started drifting and forced to catch due to not calibrating and it’s friggin sore . Just wish I’d of watched this beforehand
Good video! I did the the same thing the first time I calibrated my first dji drone. I can think of a few situations where precision landing would be necessary. Even though I'm pretty confident in my ability to fly home and land, it would be nice for the Mavic 2 to do it too with precision. Hope that update comes out soon.
Good refresher video. I suppose you were lucky in your confidence that you wouldn’t break the garage door windows, too. BE CONFIDENT. Also, your introduction showed you in a stand of trees, I didn’t know you had trees up there in the Northern plains as your previous video’s have been in a flat, stark environment sometimes in snow. The ones near railroad tracks I supposed were to point you in the direction of getting the quad home if your RTH fails- have fun. I enjoy your presentations
Just a thought: If you use a landing pad such as seen here the pad should have a homing beacon that the drone looks for which would no require calibration. The drone would be programmed to land on the beacon. Now there would have to be a system on the drone that can detect the homing beacon signal but how much extra would that cost? With that landing pad only the drone camera is used and night flying might be a difficult thing to compensate for especially in total darkness or where light is barely visible.
That IMU, Compass, and Vision positioning calibrations are so important. Also, it would have been great if you dunked the ball. That was cool though getting the ball in on the first shot.
Hello Russ, As always I continue to learn from your videos! You were my first drone channel I found and started watching. I purchased a Mavic Pro after watching several of your videos. I am hoping I can move up to the Pro 2 sometime next year, fixed income. Again thank you so much for keeping us with the "older" technology in mind for your videos. I would love to see one on your PC. I currently have an older Toshiba Qosimo, an older I7 and have yet to try to edit videos. Still trying to find the right software at a fair price. Don't think I could continue to spend a monthly charge for Premier Pro. Loved your blooper reel as well. You make things fun, entertaining, and informative. PS btw, I had my Congressman call me yesterday on the newly passed FAA Bill. He was looking for more information and my thoughts on it. I feel he was impressed on my knowledge on the bill, a big thank you for that as well. He said he would keep me informed as the new procedures are being set up and would try to fight for us hobbyist. Better late than never I guess. Again, Thank You for all you do for us Drone pilot!.
What is not often mentioned on Precision landing is that it’s a very nice feature to help protect your drone…. From engine / motor damage.! The Mavic’s electric motors sit low to the ground. It’s important to use a landing pad to help keep the motors clean. It’ kills me to see people takeoff/land from the dirty ground, beach sand, dirt on driveways, grass, etc. One little grain of dirt/sand can hurt your motor. Precision landing is amazing for landing on your small landing pad. For the iMU’s, I think the main problem is that people turn on the Drone, and walk the drone over to a takeoff location. IMU need a stable startup period to calibrate. One does not want to move your drone during this startup period. Modern aircraft require a few minutes for their IMU’s to calibrate before the aircraft can move. I would think the same general principle applies.
I have mentioned in another video of yours that I don't think its a big deal. With that being said they should have included it and will eventually add it along with a few other features mentioned in the manual. In my humble opinion I think they rushed the release (even with the delays). I have both a zoom and a 2 and a spark. I had to send my zoom in for warranty due to pixelation and range issues. They sent me a different drone. I have been reading lots of posts about pixelation, gimbal and gimbal ribbon cable issues? It is frustrating that we spend so much money and we are the beta testers. I did the same thing doing the IMU calibration on my spark.
Great video. Question, new Mavic 2 Pro, get IMU error and to calibrate. Did that, completed successfully. Continue to get same error. Any idea why? Thanks in advance Bob
Russ did you notice on your Mavic 2 calibration if you go to compass it only shows one compass is that the case or is it a bug in DJ GO 4 as I thought all DJI new Drone had 2
Hello Russ, thanks for another great video. I am a 73 years young boy from Sweden and I have learnt a lot during the last year from your very informative videos. I bought my first drone, a Mavic Pro

Glad someone is around my age flying drones. Flying around 1 1/2 years. FPV is very hard for me
Me too, I am 73. Family from Fjjallbacka,Sweden
Good stories. I'm older too, and I love my Spark.
60 years young from Sweden. Recently bought a Mavic 2 Zoom.

Chris Linn no doubt, confidence AND dedication 😎
The basketball outtakes were funny! Nice add-on! Helpful video overall too! Thanks.

Thank you very much!
Thanks for another great video. I am glad someone is around my age flying drones thought I was crazy looking at all you young people flying. Tommy Sallstedt
You are not alone. In fact, I've noticed mostly adults flying now because kids "give-up" so easily on nearly anything but video games.
Excellent video Russ, and thanks for sharing and educating us

Another great video. Always great insight and information.
It went in?!? LOL The IMU calibration tips were cool but the out takes were what got you my thumb. BOSS
Hi nice video!
The precision landing is working right now in your Mavic air thkx
Thanks for posting this. My Mavic Air has been exhibiting many of these flight attributes...with only a dozen flights or so. I am going to do this tomorrow.
Yes we are interested in your editing computer specs and such...please do a video on it.

I love your videos Russ, keep em coming!
Very nice Russ!
Love these videos. Well explained and easy to understand.
Take care, Bill
you just got yourself a new subscriber. and i do that like, once a year in youtube! thanks for your videos!
Why thank you!
Very well done Russ! Thank you for addressing this subject matter very balanced and subjective, you really brought this subject home, thank you!
Interesting video 51 Drones, look forward to the next video! :)
Thanks again Russ, another great video!!!
Nice practical insight
Thanks for another great video. 👍

really I like to watch your videos, good tutorial useful for new drone pilots....
Great content loved the end part as well.
Great thanks mavic mini will try this!

Good points. I would point out, however, that although they suggest taking the props off, that the illustrations on the app show them on. 😁

Ask in dji forums... they are very helpful. If no joy you can always contact dji support.
Awesome & funny in the end. Thanks Russ for this tutorial.
Very helpful! Thank You!
A perfect shoot :)
Good video and good tips.
I have notice that my Spark isn´t stable as it was earlier so I probebly need to calibrate the IMU.
I am huge fan. Keep it up.
Great Video 👍🏿 Loved it
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION!
I liked the confidence!!! Lol.. that was cool man thank u!
Great video!
Oh no!
As usual a great tutorial, I was just wondering what software you use to make your introduction piece, keep up the good work thanks.
Good video! I did the the same thing the first time I calibrated my first dji drone. I can think of a few situations where precision landing would be necessary. Even though I'm pretty confident in my ability to fly home and land, it would be nice for the Mavic 2 to do it too with precision.
Hope that update comes out soon.
I liked the saying at the beginning 👍👍
Good refresher video. I suppose you were lucky in your confidence that you wouldn’t break the garage door windows, too. BE CONFIDENT. Also, your introduction showed you in a stand of trees, I didn’t know you had trees up there in the Northern plains as your previous video’s have been in a flat, stark environment sometimes in snow. The ones near railroad tracks I supposed were to point you in the direction of getting the quad home if your RTH fails- have fun. I enjoy your presentations
It's a common misconception that we don't have trees. I just tend to fly where there are less of them. Lol. Thanks!
Loved to see a review on the PC!
Thank you for your advise..
Have never done that. Will now 👍👍✌️
This was good....... thanks, my friend 👍🏼🇺🇸👍🏼
You do such greats vids man!
Wow! He actually called you? That's a good congressman!
I get the high wind one to, makes sense .
Thanks for the video!
I have mentioned in another video of yours that I don't think its a big deal. With that being said they should have included it and will eventually add it along with a few other features mentioned in the manual. In my humble opinion I think they rushed the release (even with the delays). I have both a zoom and a 2 and a spark. I had to send my zoom in for warranty due to pixelation and range
issues. They sent me a different drone. I have been reading lots of posts about pixelation, gimbal and gimbal ribbon cable issues? It is frustrating that we spend so much money and we are the beta testers. I did the same thing doing the IMU calibration on my spark.
needed to have confidence.. that it went in hehehehe, nice video thanks :)
Good review...!
Great video.
Question, new Mavic 2 Pro, get IMU error and to calibrate. Did that, completed successfully. Continue to get same error. Any idea why?
Thanks in advance
Bob
Would love to see a video on your computer used for editing
It's on my list of videos to make!
Russ did you notice on your Mavic 2 calibration if you go to compass it only shows one compass is that the case or is it a bug in DJ GO 4 as I thought all DJI new Drone had 2
you do a great job
Thanks Mike!
I'd like to know more about your editing setup. I don't yet have my drone but once I get my Mavic 2, I'm going to be looking at computers too.
