I made voyages on my 34 and 35 foot boats. I never thought of insurance. I had no broadcast radios, and GPS didn't exist. I knew a few yachties who disappeared at sea in the late 70s. If the sun and horizon weren't visible, we became increasingly uncertain as to our position. We had no way of knowing what the weather would bring. Aside from having good charts, we might as well have been sailing centuries earlier. Sometimes the charts weren't so good, either. The positions of the atolls of the NW Pacific weren't known with any great certainty, and the currents are strong and erratic there. These factors led to some harrowing experiences.
I have a 1983 Catalina 36 MK1, and I'm insured through Progressive. I pay $1150 a year for $500k liability, comprehensive, and some other coverages - I added the coverage for towing, jump starts, fuel for the extra $30 (for a little over $0.50 a month that seems worth it). BTW: My boat is moored along the Connecticut River.
Geez that’s pretty good. I’ve been insured by progressive for years on my vehicles but when I tried to add my 23’ center console boat with $50k worth of coverage they quoted me $5,800 a year. For a boat I only use 10 times a year nah.

State Farm offers cruisers insurance on most vessels subject to only two caveats: You are only insured in the US and Bahamas waters or on routes between, and that your boat is strictly non-commercial. There is no restriction on when you have to be where, so you don't have to relocate for hurricane season if you don't want to. Rates are usually between 1% and 1.5% of the limits of liability annually. I don't yet have a boat, I'm shopping, but that is the gist of the info I got from my insurance agent.

Would love your feedback on this. We are in the process of purchasing a pristine 1976 Cabot 36 from a wonderful couple who have owned and cared for it like museum piece for 40 years! I own a 23 year old custom designed and built plywood cruising monohull. Getting insurance was interesting to say the least. I pay just under 600 a year for liability only. That covers me from WA state, to the southern tip of Mexico.
Interesting as we just recently went through this insurance drill because our marina required we have a $1M both liability & accident. After I spent a day talking to a lot of insurance companies, my husband got our State Farm Agent to insure my 1984 O’Day 34. I was at the time talking to The Hartford, who I think was going going to insure me. It was my last call. I’m in Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay.
As someone who is planning to purchase a sailboat and spend time in the Caribbean. I would love to see a video (you may have done one already) on purchasing/renting/finding a permanent slip to keep your boat in a good location that allows travel to and from the states when work demands you return back. We plan to spend half time on boat and half in our NC mountain home. Suggestions? Thanks for the videos and information.

As an RVer, no we dont tend to mind someone in the same area of a campsite as us as long as they arent in our campsite or blocking us from getting in and out. And dont get down because you cant get something physically done. Where you might not be able to rip something off the wall he isnt climbing into that tight space to do something. Yall are a team and one that complements each other well. Only be "frustrated" when together as a team you cant complete something.
Great video, I've been watching a few of these lately and find them very informative. if I May give one critique it would that I find the fact that the comments do not match the images being displayed which I find distracting as though I am watching two deferent channels at the same time. Cheers
You had two of my favorite boats on here. The cape dory, and the PDQ. I will probably end up on the PDQ one day. I live on the treasure coast in Florida and it would be perfect. I would have liked to seen a 35 Southern Cross. Beautiful boat but not that common. My friend has the 28. Very salty.

@ladyksailing would like a video in this series showing a list of small learner lake boats for the very beginners that dont have a huge budget to jump in both feet first with a "real" sailbot but something "complicated" enough to get an idea of what their getting into.

1980 Tayana 37 - 250,000/300,000 Bodily injury, 100,000 property damage, coastal Navigation 75 miles. Through the same company that insures my home and apartment.... Progressive. Not the absolute best, but it's about 65/month. Sold the Tayana, now have a 1986 Hunter 37... The marina where I'm at now, requires $500,000 Liability, so it's about $140/month - same company

I'm in North Florida and I have a 1973 Olympic Dolphin 23 and I have it insured through State farm for $140 for the year. It's valued at $8,000 and I honestly am not sure what the total liability is. I think it's 100,000
Union 32/ Ted Brewer design built in Taiwan. Port is Ventura, CA. I just switched from boat US to State Farm. I have full coverage of 500k liability with a payout of 59k if totaled. Interesting info why i switched. My premiums went up from 60 a month to 90 a month for no apparent reason. I called, and they said the recent payouts from Florida caused all rates to go up. I was like F@@@ that! So, I got the same coverage from State Farm for 44.00 a month. I have been boating for 39 years, no claims ever. Hurricanes are causing all kinds of issues in the insurance industry. I know someone in Miami paying 5k a year for a 34 foot powerboat with tons of stipulations on named storms.
2005 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 54DS, located in the Great Lakes in Charlevoix, MI, insured thru BoatUS/GEICO, insured value $400,000, annual premium $1600. When it was on the Chesapeake, the premium was $2000.
@@Clime5LEDinc What carrier are you with? When we were on the Chesapeake, I think we had the provision where we had to be north of Cape Hatteras during hurricane season, which didn't matter to us since we were doing a 1 year refit project in Oxford. I also have a 25 ton captains license and 40 years boating experience, so I think there is a discount for that. We also get a BoatUS discount with GEICO.
@@svechappe6075 We have boatus/gieco. After this discussion, I called Geico and requested some changes. I have 30+ yrs of sailing experience (16, 25, 35 ft boats and now a 45ft), but no captain's license yet. Since we are on the hard in Deltaville VA for the winter instead of cruising SWFL as the original plan, I got the price down to $2438/yr ---$2200 if I insure my cars with them. My liability coverage is only $300K though. I see here many have $1M. Sailing coverage area is US waters only, no other countries with this policy. Hull value is set to $165K with a $8250 deductible ... so it seems I still need to do more shopping
@@Clime5LEDinc I think the remaining difference is that we are in the Great Lakes and our price when we were in the Chesapeake was from 4 years ago. I’m sure US Coastal rates have gone up since then due to hurricane activity. It looks like you’ve worked it down to a good number.

Geico raised my 2011 Audi to 740 dollars for six months of coverage. lolol. I've never registered a claim in my entire 750,000 miles lifetime of driving. Guess from now on we'll have to switch to driving a sailboat.
I live in Australia and I have a 1981 Compass 28. Aparrently the previous owner could only get third party insurance sufficient to fulfil the marina requirements of the time. Since I purchased the boat, I have tried buying comprehensive insurance without any success. I'm willing to listen to anything that might result with me obtaining comprehensive insurance, before I just have to settle for third party
Australia requires 10 Million liability and many insurers will not insure in SE Asia.... 2003 Catana 471. We are insured with Topsail UK but the policy is underwritten by a US conglomerate with a policy called Global Yacht Cover and I have heard from others that in the event of a lightning strike, it is easier to pull out your own finger nails than get a payment out of them.... Fair Winds!

I own a 23 year old custom designed and built plywood cruising monohull. Getting insurance was interesting to say the least. I pay just under 600 a year for liability only. That covers me from WA state, to the southern tip of Mexico.
My 1973 Dufour 35 has been insured in Holland for the price you pay pêr month for a full year. Liability is insured for €7,5 million.
Thanks for the videos and information.
wow life is good best of both worlds Dan!
82 C&C 37 NC State Farm
Great question. If you can afford all of this maybe you should consider paying the well worth $80 consultation fee Tim offers. A drop in the bucket.
1977 Chrysler 26 trailer sailor ,apostle islands lake superior area, lake michigan, and Iowa

Minimum coverage just to enter marinas.
I have a 1988 Sabre 36. Insured though GEICO. $2,062 per year $500k liability, $1 million spill and fuel liability, $500 deductible
I'd hold-off on buying a sailboat right now, wait about 6 months. In the PNW, I am seeing 30 ft Catalinas 1980's vintage going for $10K. There are a bunch of used boats coming on the market and prices are crashing down.
You think? I’m in the PNW and I assume summer would be peak time to buy.
Im looking to buy in Sept … waited through summer so I’m hopping for some better deals, we will see what i get!
1990 Catalina 22 winged keel w trailer through Geico Marine - as easy as adding a car. Just renewed w no hassle.

Significant discounts for each ASA course completed. I have through 104, my wife has 101. Also previous policy with fishing boat and no claims or tickets.
1981 Aloha 34 - Gallagher Skippers Plan by Aviva - 2 million liability here in Ontario. Maybe we will see you this summer as we plan on going to the Thames for a little weekend jaunt. We are in Belle River.
I have what is known as a Challenger US 35. Built like a tank. 1976 Wilmington CA. Paid $500. Previous owner had no clue.
My experience is that people who say they can’t get insurance do not have a survey and can’t or won’t get one. CS 36T $800cdn per year. 2 mil liability. $620 deductible.
1988 Mirage 35 insured with GEICO (Boat US).
Very salty.
Thanks. We (kiddo and I) are starting our journey to become sailors. Your channel is very helpful
It would be a tough decision between the Cat and, er, uh Cat.
Tim love your show. We have The ultimate true 35 best boat ever for 2 people that’s a floating condo and sails fine for us. Check out the Catalina 350. Several serious differences that make it amazing including a pedestal V berth with a real inner spring mattress
2008 catalina 350! My dream boat!👍

My ancient, worthless, piece of junk, slower than a petrified sail, but man do I love it 1974 Coronado 23 is insured through Progressive. The cost was reasonable. I sail mostly in a lake in Georgia. Good episode. Thanks, man.
Hmm How much is reasonable?
Steve, sailing your boats twin brother, the Colombia T-23. Nice having the shallow draft, but doesn't point for shit.
1984 S2 9.2A BoatUS underwriten by Geico. $258 for the year. 50% in January. $43/mth till September last instalment $38 Cleveland Ohio

1976 tayana 37, 24 year old and I pay 1200$ cdn through MD marine that includes 2 million liability and even has 5000$ coverage for ctow
@ladyksailing would like a video in this series showing a list of small learner lake boats for the very beginners that dont have a huge budget to jump in both feet first with a "real" sailbot but something "complicated" enough to get an idea of what their getting into.
I've a 1964 wooden 25ft sailboat, with 0 years sailing experience. I could only get 3rd party insurance, (Fair enough lol! (not for the boat or contents, just any damage to others)) - can't remember the insurer, boat insurance 4 you or some such, But UK £90 for 1 year ($110 US) . My boat is worth around $5000 or so, maybe $10000 US.
Definitely some nice boats, but i'm surprised there weren't any Hunter boats! They have a lot of boats in the 35ish foot range at really good prices, newer late 90's and early 2000's models too.
1972 Samson C-Quence lines, 38 foot, schooner, Junk Rigged, Ferrocement hull, $500K liability, State Farm (currently for sale due to purchase of Catalina)

1981 Lancer 36 - Progressive
My Catalina 1983 27 foot was near the cut off date for my insurance . I had to get a new survey to get insurance this year
This was sometime back but I wasn’t sure if their boats US it was a very good policy that had a lot of international coverage. In the 1990s and ran about $300 a year I bought the boat to Catalina 30 and they even supplied me with a survey.
I have a 1973 Allied Princess 36 with agreed value hull coverage insured through AIG Private Client Group. You guys with the new boats have it easier. Last Spring I sold my 1936 woody which also had agreed value coverage through AIG.
1982 Bristol 38.8 underwriter is Travelers, 500k liability 80k value
1990 Catalina MKI, insured with State Farm, for $50 a month
1978 C&C 36 progressive insurance ,thanks for the content,I enjoy the knowledge
Pacific Seacraft 24 1988, i could only find insurance with Classic Boats inaurance or Geico. I went with Geico and since I got cost of replacement, i pay 1200 a year
1992 Passage and we have Progressive insurance costal waters US and Bahamas for 850 a year.
Have you personally sailed a 361?.... I chartered one in the BVI back in 2012 and she sailed like a pig....My 35 foot pick? 35 Wauqiuez, sail well, built well, good layout and often found crossing the Pacific...
1987 Catalina 22. Had great coverage and 10k replacement from Geico/boat us. Is $41 a month
I have a 1983 Ericson 35 mkIII and I have insurance through Progressive.
68 Cal Jensen 25’ insured by AAA. We’re in Oceanside Ca! I think we have 1/2 mil cost us $180/yr
2005 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 54DS, located in the Great Lakes in Charlevoix, MI, insured thru BoatUS/GEICO, insured value $400,000, annual premium $1600. When it was on the Chesapeake, the premium was $2000.
Wow that is quite a bit lower than what I have now ... 2007 Jeanneau SO 45 ... $3049/yr based on the Chesapeake with no limit within US waters ...
99 Catalina 380 insured with PMU , 2000,000 liability Gibsons BC Canada.
1450.00 this year , 8th year
‘87 Catalina 25, GIECO Marine in N. Texas
BoatUS Geico... 2007 Jeanneau SO 45 ... $3049/yr based on the Chesapeake with no limit within US waters
... Seeing what others are paying I definitely need to go shopping again
UPDATE: Now $2240 for the year
Geico raised my 2011 Audi to 740 dollars for six months of coverage. lolol. I've never registered a claim in my entire 750,000 miles lifetime of driving. Guess from now on we'll have to switch to driving a sailboat.
I am seriously considering that PDQ!
Got a recent survey mate, that's what they need for full comp.
Where are you?. There's a good surveyor that travels out of Bribe ls Qld..
That's interesting, looking at buying a compass 28. They won't insure the mast as the standing rigging is over 10 years old.
Fair Winds!
1981 Catalina 22 State Farm
1978 San Juan 28 State Farm (old info sold in 2009) Both in Florida
1970 O'Day Mariner
insured for years through Geico (vis BoatUS), but eventually they said they don't insure boats older than 40 years
so now Progressive insures it for the same premium
