      Starfleet has the extremely annoying habit of spreading their forces thin, which is why they keep saying, "We're the only ship in range." And outlying colonies don't really have the same luxuries that are on Earth. Remember when Jason Vigo complained about his colony's scarcity? Or Sisko's rant in support of the Maquis? That's assuming the colony doesn't get wiped out entirely from freak entities such as the Crystaline Entity or a super virus in The Deadly Years.
      I'd rather be a Federation citizen than a Romulan or Klingon or even a Bajorian citizen, but the Feds aren't as great as Star Trek insists upon.

      @AiluridaeAureus Год назад

      @@Knightwolf1994 Oh yeah, big time. Let's face it, humanity is inherently xenophobic and tribalistic. The only way we're ever getting a real forever peace is an alien invasion or other such cataclysmic species threatening event that strains the tyrants past capacity and they collapse, while the more sane countries band together against it. You have to remember, Roddenberry was at best a delusional socialist like George Orwell, and at worst an actual tankie Maoist communist before the internet was a thing. He's the kind of person who genuinely would say "the only reason there's not a one world government is religion, capitalism and the fascists" if he was honest.
      The realistic scenario genuinely is Mass Effect's style of interspecies galactic government where every single Citadel race can only teeth-grittingly tolerate each other on a broad scale, can barely ever cooperate unless something's coming that will wipe them all out, and aliens will ever only like each other on a personal, individual level. Earth is still divided, cultures are still a thing, religion refuses to die, and the only "unified government" is that no nation on Earth is trying to kill each other and cooperates when their interests align, along with now knowing disunity will get them all killed now that there's the threat of imperialistic, arguably fascistic aliens like the Turians or cartoonishly bloodthirsty warmongers like the Krogan.
      Star Trek is, and will never be realistic, and the harder you think about how it can work, the more you realize it doesn't, wouldn't and shouldn't, and you're probably putting in more effort thinking about it than the author did. Kind of like Harry Potter...

    I would support joining the UFP wholeheartedly. I very much support integrated governance under the principle of subsidiarity. I therefore support a global, federal government for Earth. As an aside, I am subsequently strictly opposed to unitary states. Only federalism can sustain layered multiculturalism within a single governing structure. I truly believe a strong, global government is possible if strict federal principles are applied.

    The best trait of the Federation is that the Federation doesn't force other planets, races, cultures to join the Federation. Another very good trait is that they have certain standards potential new members have to fulfill. I don't know if "The Cage" is part of the canon, if it is, trade and mutual corporation between the Federation and species which don't meet the requirements to join the UFP seems to be possible. Another reason to join the UFP is they're very positive attitude towards science and technology, which in the Star Trek universe has solved all material problems. (Some say today that we're too reliant on technology and there might a kernel of truth to it. But without technology the world would be much less hospitable and bearable for humans and our animals.) I wish the people on our world would have a more positive attitude towards technology instead of demonizing tech as being inherently unsustainable and driving climate change aka global warming. Instead passiveness and spirituality seem to rise, which won't help at all. Go Trek!

Just think about where we were one hundred or even five hundred years ago, that's barely a blip geologically, much less in terms of space-related significance. And while that's considering we don't wipe ourselves out... we're probably better than cockroaches in our tenacity to survive.
      Granted, there are still legitimate concerns like easy resource depletion, hostiles finding us first or hurdles like our current understanding of physics, my pessimism finds it difficult to see us as a whole, failing the challenge.

In "A Taste of Armageddon" Kirk acknowledges that humans are killers, but he also says that we can learn to kill less, all it takes is to decide everyday not to kill. To the question of which alien superpower / alliance / empire would I join if the Federation was not an option....I would choose the Romulans. Why? As Ambassador Spock observed and stated, they are moving inexorably toward an adoption of a Vulcan style philosophy. It may take them a long time, but they will reach it. I could not choose Vulcan itself since it was a member of the not available Federation for this decision. While humanity and Vulcans have many differences and thus conflict, it was the Vulcans who were our first contact with an alien race, and aided / guided / controlled our early development as a warp-capable culture. While I'm sure the approach of Romulans to our early exploration of interstellar space would be very different (and was, according to cannon), that same cannon timeline brings us to a point after "Star Trek: Nemesis" where Captain Riker of the USS Titan leads negotiations to end hostilities between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire. Call me an optimist, but I view the Romulans as a bit of a mirror of ourselves; possessing at the same time the military might and the passion that we do. As their culture moves away from passion and toward logic and reason (as Ambassador Spock believed they would), they would become a more stable and cooperative culture, far less war-like, a Vulcan like society, perhaps restructuring their influence in the quadrant and ceasing to be an "Empire" at all. I choose the Romulans (If the IFP were not an option) because I'm betting on their future, not their past or even their present - much the same driving hope that Gene Roddenberry held for humanity in his vision of our future.

    It's a simple question, just look at Earth's history and what centuries of seggregation between nations did to the little guy throughout history. Joining forces, making common objectives and deals would be the way to go, even if you or they are not willing to go all the way to federalize two different species. That's part of the message of Star Trek too, such ideas would be all the more important when it would be harder to empathise or to simply communicate.

    The Federation is quite incompetent.
    -The Galaxy Class Starships are prone to viruses that can even destroy the entire ship (USS Yamato) Apparently there isn't a honeypot protocol to insulate the ship's core systems, and they are supposed to be the best ships ever built.
    -The Fire Suppression System almost never works
    -No one knows how the holodeck works, it doesn't have an easily accessed off switch and artificial hologram people are actually capable of controlling or damaging the ship and the "outside" world.
    -The Ships are so poorly designed that they can be hijacked or crippled with a very small crew, (the Binars) or even one (Rogue Data)
    -Medical Technology does not seem to be very good as diseases seemingly easily spread (the Naked Now), and some medical personnel seem confounded by simple emergency procedures like using a splint to set a limb. Even one of the top surgeons was clueless as to how to fix Picard's heart...something that could be replaced in the 20th century.
    -Star Fleet Command was easily infiltrated by visually detectable brain bugs, almost bringing the Command to collapse
    -The Federation restricts trade, such as Romulan Ale
    -Simple animals such as Tribbles can endanger an entire ship
    -The Federation keeps children and non-Federation personnel on board their "science" vessels when those same vessels are frequently deployed to battle.
    -Communications are, apparently, a Federation monopoly
    -Earth doesn't seem to have advanced much as all, as homes can still catch fire and kill people
    -Replicator technology produces inferior foodstuffs, according to O'Brien who misses "real" food, Scotty, who laments the weakness of "Synthahol" and Troi being annoyed and bored at the "healthy" chocolate the replicator makes.
    -The Federation makes bad treaties, such as with the Cardassian, displacing the residents of several planets. Especially given that the Cardassians had repeatedly demonstrated they had no interest in peace.
    -They have no problem displacing many inhabitants of several worlds to satisfy a treaty with a hostile power, but can't properly negotiate a way to work with the few dozen Bakku in order to cultivate the life-preserving radiation that surrounds their planet.
    -Sponsored Scientists face little oversight and dangerous materials such as Proto-matter can be used without Starfleet supervision
    -"Mars Defense" is a pathetic joke.
    -The Federation has very little contact with the outside Galaxy as the Borg were a surprise when first encountered, despite Guinan and other refugees having known about them decades earlier. The Federation had little clue about the Ferengi until they bumped into each other.
    -Starfleet seems to gobble up resources as private vessels are rare, and almost always small, clunky, dirty and unreliable.
    -They can't decide on whether or not they actually use money
    -The prime directive is often abused, used inconsistently, and most worryingly, used as an excuse to allow entire civilizations to die. The excuse being that a non-aligned culture has the "right" to evolve on it's own, and yet if a civilization is facing impending doom, by definition it *can't* evolve any longer. Saving people who would be the only way to allow any further evolution, natural or not.
    I could go on and on.

      -That Virus was Iconian, a computer program from the most advanced civilization in Galactic history. It wasn't even a malicious virus, it was just uploading itself into their hardware, presumably to run its own OS.
      -Romulan Ale? Trade Embargoes happen...plus it doesn't seem to be very good for you, everyone who has drank it that wasn't a Romulan looked like they wanted to die after.
      -Animals can always be a danger, especially when taken from their natural environment haphazardly. And Tribbles posed the same threat to a Klingon ship.
      -It doesn't matter where you put people, planets aren't any safer than starships. See TOS: "The Doomsday Machine" where several star systems were annihilated, Operation: Annihilate where brain parasites killed an entire colony, the episode with the space amoeba that ate star systems. In TNG the Borg scooped whole colonies off of planets, and then the Crystalline Entity came along to snack on people like Galactus. Even in real life a stray gamma ray burst or black hole passing through can wipe out all life. Post-TNG the Hobus Supernova wiped out life in a 500 light year stretch, including Romulus. At least the starship can run.
      -Chateau Picard burned down because jean-Luc's brother Robert was a luddite who hated technology and didn't have a fire suppression system installed in their old wooden house.
      -The situation with the Maquis was stupid, but first those were Federation colonies, and second, I think they were pretty stupid for colonizing along the border of Cardassia while we were still at war with them.
      -Mars Defense got crushed because the Borg had assimilated Picard who knew absolutely everything about Earth's defenses. Of course they got stomped on.
      -Starfleet's entire point is to go out there and make contact with the Galaxy. How would they know about someone until they meet them, though they did know the Ferengi's name and were aware of their approximate technology level. It's interesting that Seven's parents went looking for the Borg though. I can imagine El-Aurian refugees didn't want to talk about it and were glad to have escaped. If they didn't have advanced warp drive it may have taken them decades to escape the Borg, but El-Aurians live so long that that may have been perfectly acceptable.
      -Cassidy Yates ship seemed to be in perfect working order, though it's rare to see civilian ships that approach the grandeur and style of a purpose built ship of the line. Compare an oil tanker to an Aircraft Carrier.
      -I think Earth is off money, but other civilizations use it as needed.
      -Outside universe, I think the writers got confused during the TNG era, and we know Roddenberry was deteriorating. Discovery opened up with them covertly saving a species, to be altruistic without actually impacting the species' culture, which I think is the true path. That said, even during TNG the characters would break the Prime Directive when push came to shove and a civilization was on the line.

    That part about business opportunities is kinda tricky. That's cause, while private enterprise is allowed in the Federation, it is heavily implied that the amassing of riches is not. It is also kind of implied that most big businesses owners and independent traders (like Kivas Fajo) are not citizens of the federation.

    The risk you run of joining an organization like the Federation is shown pretty clearly in Stargate SG-1 with the Aschen Federation.
    For those unfamiliar with the series, Earth made contact with a (human) race called the Aschen, who allowed them to join their Federation. They provided lots of advanced technology, including medical advancements that effectively ended disease. However, one of the undocumented side effects of this medical technology was that over time, the fertility rate on Earth was drastically reduced. The Aschen were a civilization that conquered worlds with open arms and a smile.
    If you don't understand a given technology enough to create it, you don't understand it enough to keep it from being covertly used against you. It's like giving Internet access to people from the Middle Ages and expecting them to avoid malware and other electronic espionage.

    • @redvenomweb
      @redvenomweb 6 лет назад

      Starfleet's technology isn't unique to each member planet; it's the same tech for all Federation members. It's not like humans are using Earth-developed tech while Benzites are using ships developed on Benzar. So at a certain level, the Federation (through Starfleet) does provide technology.

      If you're a ST TNG fan, you'll probably like StarGate SG1 check it out. It was a really great show. And just like TNG it takes a season to really start to work well, even has a similar feel to TNG. That universe (stargate) has some interesting lore setting. Amanda Tapping is a cutie and Richard Dean Anderson is funny yet stoic as the lead. As with the Aschen storyline the show had a lot of great arcs.

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 6 лет назад +1

      The Aschen Confederation was also very reluctant to reveal any locations or any hard data about their worlds to outsiders. Understandable since stargates can be used to attack or invade planets once their stargate addresses are known, and the Aschen hadn't developed any kind of defense against this (like Earth's "iris" device).
      But an important difference in Star Trek ... non-members are able to visit any Federation world in range of their warp vessels, and potential/applicant members are often escorted to distant Federation worlds on Starfleet ships ... so it's quite easy for them to see for themselves what actual "on the ground" conditions are really like before joining.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 4 года назад

      @@redvenomweb At the same time many species progress along similar tech trees. Warp drive is usually the first FTL technology developed. Humans invented transporters on their own, though other species had their own. Vulcans had tractor beams before humans did, and everybody had already developed shields by the time the NX-01 launched.
      And Benzites might actually have their own ships still. Vulcans still fly their own ships.

    One of the few problems with the Warp Drive requirement is the fact that some alien races may only want have contact with other alien race for knowledge alone. There are a lot examples alien races who simply wanted help from the Federation. The Federation is willing to help any alien race as long as they requested the help. Some alien races do want to maintain their own independence. The Federation will respect any non-member's right to maintain their independence. A lot of non-warp alien races do have some degree of contact with the Federation. There are signs that there are other alien civilizations like the Federation in Star Trek. The First Federation is one example of the other Federation like civilizations.

One that may ally itself to formerly hostile empires that could be a base of operation if another war broke out and before that happened this planet trades with the other empire for better tech to be on par with UFP? Will they force said planet under their control after a war due to being in their borders or allow them to ally once again with their enemies?

    • @CertifiablyIngame
      @CertifiablyIngame  5 лет назад

      I imagine that the UFP would probably allow it, but if the power they've allied with is in open hostilities against the Federation I picture all sorts inspections of cargo, spying and surveillance going on. After all, when a power involves itself in war with the Federation and is an actual threat, the prime directives don't seem to apply, see Dominion War, Klingon War etc. It's a situation I'd like to see them have to deal with.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 4 года назад

      They would respect that civilizations' sovereignty, but would likely make sure there were regular patrols of their border as well. But the Federation acknowledges that space is large, so as long as that civilization didn't try to take over an actual established Federation planet or holding they could likely do as they please.
      But if this planet decides to go to war with the Federation they'll likely find themselves against a rather large fleet of starships. Even with comparable tech, they won't have the numbers or experience.

    What I don’t understand is who determined alpha beta gamma and delta quadrants. Not just that, but many species have remained undiscovered within the Milky Way galaxy. When they’re discovered, they immediately know how the Milky Way is separated.

      I choose to believe that's just a gratuity taken by the universal translator. It was most blatant in Voyager.

      Likely just a map maker's conceit, just like Earth being on the border of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

      that's just narrative convention that they don't spend 3/4 of the episode explaining the terms they use to every alien they meet. That's irrelevant to the story.

    Okey, okay. You won me over. I want to join the Federation. I want to be the captain of a Federation starship.

    While I consider the Prime Directive to be a cruel and heartless policy, I think that if I was the leader of a unified planet and recently got the opportunity to join then I just might. It would certainly be better than being enslaved or conquered by one of the other great powers.

      Personally I'd consider seeing if an "affiliate" status is possible (think a close alliance with benefits) - the Prime Directive being one of the reasons. Non-interference is generally a good policy but there are situations where it shouldn't be strictly enforced. The way 24th century Starfleet interprets it is way too strict and can easily result in major catch 22s, where even making a choice to begin with (or even not making a choice) is a violation of the prime directive. If you're fully in the UFP you're stuck with that rigid, self-defeating system, but if you're only closely aligned you don't necessarily have to deal with it.

    I would have to investigate for 25 years. But in the meanwhile we can be good friends. But I would never surrender my or others individual right to defend myself. Includes the ability to walk away from Union or Alliance individually.

      Well there's nothing against maintaining your own fleet. I would imagine integration and coordination with Starfleet would be set up. I think seceding from the Federation is easier than a state leaving the US or a country leaving the EU, though I feel like it would have just as complex a series of trade and citizenship questions to answer.

    Bajor was a bad example for being accepted into the Federation. They were an affirmative action case and the Federation overlooked a few things with them. Even though they knew about warp, they really didn't have warp capability through their own doing. Their people were far from unified. They are very antagonistic. Their government was provisional and everyone disagreed in it.
    I think you get the point.

    6:15 To be fair the only reason the enterprise is predominately human is because Kirk has about 200 pending sexual harrassment suits levied against him from various green blue and yellow alien species! It's developed a reputation.
