- I give Elly's suspension a good greasing, as well as replacing gearbox and engine oil. Then I head out for a drive in TWC the Invacar - she spat out a spark plug! How would I get home with no tools and no mobile reception?

TWC: I hear you're off to Croatia?
Ellie: Not bloody likely!
TWC: Wana see how to get out of it?
Ellie: WTF??
TWC: I spat a plug out and he had to push me up hill hahahaha
I'm relieved that twc's issue happened locally and not on one of her more epic journeys.
Got to love old cars sometimes the more care you put into them the more they just throw it back in your face.Stay strong Ian stay strong.
One of my many aircooled vws spat a plug out once, (had the benefit of double the cylinders you have so limping home was possible)
But I helicoiled the plug thread in the head and it was fine. Old alloy heads like to do that.... some race vw engines run helicoils as a matter of prevention rather than repair
Excellent video as always. I wish you a safe trip to Croatia.
Having seen this video, I suggest you fly.
Rear visibility has much improved from our point of view
I don't get the idea of the Knife-Edge instead of just a round pivot pin. I see below that someone has suggested less friction. However, one thing I remember long ago from my aircraft engineering apprenticeship is that friction is independent of surface area. We had to prove this by measuring the force required to drag metal blocks in various configurations across metal plates. It matters not if the block is on its side (big area) or on its end (small area), the force is always the same.
To be precise the COEFFICIENT of friction is independent of area you need more effort to overcome the friction of a larger area of contact but when you run the equation the coefficient is the same
I don't understand the reasoning either.
Just did my first periodic maintenance and had no idea what “grease the knife edges” meant so, THANK YOU.
A car famously bad in really hot weather heading into a heatwave.
Can't wait for the video. I'm loving your travel blogs ian
I plan to buy a new super coil in the way. Elly doesn't mind the heat, just crap ignition components that don't like it.
Nice to learn about 2CV suspension very interesting 👍 Poor TWC, glad you made it back we felt your stress. You did very well minding your Ps and Qs
Have you been in hiding McPugg? Mum got you at a secret undisclosed location? Haven't seen you posting in awhile.😟
@@klwthe3rd Mums the word.
Indeed - slightly less chance of leaking than hydragas.
Just noticed that you are up to 37k subscribers.
Glad to see your hard work and volume of videos are paying off
So good to watch a real classic car vid where things go wrong as they invariably do? Keep it real
You can't appreciate the good times without experience less good times
Absolutely perfect example of HubNut style motoring.
Just a non-video-related 'thank you', Ian for your Foxanne tips on painting cars. We had Bodgit & Scarper repair our gates last week - and as I'd guessed, they'd not painted the top edge of the gate - so it was was still bare (rotten) wood. I've a tin ('plastic!') of black 'stone' / masonry paint - so gave the top edge a coat of paint - but I knew it'd still collect water - so I used my 'designed but not tried' method today of super-bodging a paint job on the gate top to cover all the holes etc. that'd collect water and help the rotting process. It goes like this: Apply fresh coat of paint, add strips of newspaper (to cover the holes) paint the newspaper. Add another layer of newspaper and one more coat of paint - so it's a cross-between painting and papier maché. Looks a lot better and is hopefully far more sound !
I then was wrapping up tools and paint etc. and noticed the back panel on the Kangoo with half the black paint peeled off - and there's me with a paint brush containing black paint - so yes - painted the back of the car with it - looks a lot better! So as I say, thanks for the tip Ian !
Just come back from Croatia, it was VERY hot!!!!!!, but lovely country, good luck.
I'm sure that angels will protect your travels & keep you safe Ian!
I'm starting a petition; Bring back Ian(s) Hair! This guy is an impostor, Oh wait...did you say you had 2 breakdowns in as many days? Phew, panic over, It really is Ian, the living legend of 'HubNut' Fame after all! Was a bit worried back there!
Hopefully this is a good omen for the Croatia trip, you're getting all of the bad luck out of the way before you go 🤞
I can so relate to all of this, Ian. When SH**T happens it really happens It is 30 degrees in Kent and I'm trying to sort out a battery overnight drain in my car plus fitting new CV joints such fun.
Fantastic! You are going to enjoy the trip to Croatia - we had 40°C here in Germany earlier this week! Forget the Samson effect, you donated your hair to a good cause and bring pleasure to thousands which will negate any effects!!!
Oh dear indeed! Poor old TWC. Glad she didn't spit a plug out in the middle of London! Hope Elly is better soon and the 'big trip' goes without drama. All the best.
Awesome, looking forward to seeing Elly on her travels the coming weeks
Same thing happened to my beetle. The number three cylinder popped a plug, which gets hotter than the other cylinders. A helicoil worked for a few years, eventually I had to replace the head.
Rather bemused by the 2CV suspension linkage. A completely circular pin would work just as well and last a lot longer. I presume its flat sides are to stop the pin rotating - to ensure the movement is on the correct part of the pin. On the whole, I think it makes the torsion bar look like a great idea !
I feel your pain, Ian. I’ve had many a wrenching day that went like than. Good on you for having the gumption to clean your tools and put them away. I usually just chuck them I on the workbench and turn out the light after such a day. It will get better. Keep the faith.
If the thread is stripped in the head, I have an unused 'savathread' spark plug thread cutter and inserts you are welcome to. It's like a helicoil but a full threaded insert. It will only fit M14 x 1.25 threads however.
Haynes manual reference, the electrode is now mullered 😂😂 classic hubnut
Some days everything goes so badly we feel we shouldn't have gotten out of bed. Seems a box of spare parts and a dedicated tool kit should be tucked away on some cars. In the early 80s my Moskvitch used to eject one of its spark plugs regularly - it would shoot out, hit the inside bonnet and richochet out of the engine bay into the road. I kept a clean spare in the extensive manufacturer supplied tool kit (along with its Communist Haynes-style manual that had instructions on 'how to lay up the car in the event of hostilities') Happy memories of searching for the ejected plug in the road that could then be cleaned up to replace the spare. Mind you, my 2 stroke Suzuki 100cc motorbike back in the 70s even used to melt plugs sometimes, so I'd gotten used to carrying spares years before.
What an excellent explanation of 2CV suspension, thanks.
Look forward to watching this later 👍👍
It'll all work out mate.Best wishes for the Croatia expedtion😎👍!
Sounds you miss from when you were young, lovingly returned by Mr Hubnut,
We all have one of those days in life where everything goes wrong . I did laugh when you started running with TOC as it was a take on Basil Fawlty hitting a red Austin with a branch of a tree event .
RE: 2CV valve clearance. The feeler gauge is wider than the valve stem that wears into the rocker arm and therefore bridges across the wear. Buy a cheap dial test indicator and use that to verify the clearance
My friends Isetta used to do the same thing, only one cylinder though. He used locktite to hold the plug in in the end, it worked.
very patient man iain ... i dont know how you keep your cool ... well done .. great vid tnx
Most things that happen in life are a lesson for the future dear chap. In other words, maybe this was a gentle reminder for you to take LOTS of spare parts and an ample supply of lubricants for your forthcoming trip across Europe. Things can become even more frustrating when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere; and you know the tool or part required, is sitting happily back home, redundant in your garage.
Can't take everything though! The one bit you need will always be the one bit you left behind...
I'm with you Ian! Spent the whole afternoon getting absolutely nowhere today. It can only get better!
These videos are just BRILL.....every one........makes BBC Top Gear look like absolute crap......we knew that all ready.......Really love your videos.
I had the same when my hair came off, just put it behind you and move on. 👍🏻 Sometimes stuff happens. Cheer up dude the rest of us live vicariously through your adventures.

Ahh, the joys of old cars! Keep your chin up Ian, you'll get it all worked out.
that was very interesting. Always good to learn
Some days are just crap!
It’s better to just sack it all off and walk away for a bit.
I would have tried the other plug in the head to make sure the treads were ok while I was there because based on that info, a plan can be formulated back home.
Hopefully Elly is just vibrating because she can and not because she’s broken. I guess time will tell.
Great video as always, despite the issues. Don’t be too despondent👍
I had absolutely no tools with me, so the other plug was not coming out. I think I've found Elly's odd noise. Nothing serious!
14:12 Cool Runnings Welsh team practice session 😆
I would be careful with gear oil changes ian.
i put a new brand in (well known) gearbox oil that i never used before and it started leaking from the input shaft seal as soon as i went for a drive.
The same viscosity as the other gearbox oils i used as well.
Stick to what works for you and don't chop & change.
Good video ian as always.(:-)
REPLY
No, 2CVs definitely benefit from frequent gearbox oil changes. Bad things happen otherwise.
@@HubNut I did not mean it to be read that way.
What i meant is don't chop & change with different brands as some seals may leak like it happened with my car recently.
Its something to do with new additives i guess that they put in and that makes old seals leak, but may be fine with newish cars.
I change my gear oil every 2 years and stick to the same brand that gave me no troubles.
Hopefully, it was just a plug that came loose after Tuc's long trip previously.
Looking forward to your coverage of the Croatia trip, certainly loved the Mighty dacia collection caper. You didn't go to any touristy places in that which I want to do. If you want to experience a country, stray away from the monuments & the noisy tourists, experience what the locals do on a daily basis, that's what I intend to do if I ever go travelling
Thanks. I do plan to do a bit of touristy stuff on this trip - I've never been to Amsterdam for instance, and need to visit. But, I certainly enjoy getting away from the tourists too! There will be no sunloungers...
@@HubNut Excellent. I'd love to go to Amsterdam myself some day, should be an awesome experience!
@@HubNut make sure you go off the beaten path too! 🤗
@@HubNut Don't step back in amazement after seeing who is sitting in the shop window and fall in the canal.
Because that's what I nearly did....
17:11 just after you said about that jinx you hear a police siren! 😂
Hi again Ian, I admire your courage for taking on the journey to Croatia in this lovely classic but did I see some chassis de-lamination at 7.26 ? Safe trip and slanche from that old Yorkshie "Geezer" in Ireland.
Unlikely. Maybe the bottom plate?
The plug thread is relatively easy to helicoil, most decent workshop garages should easily do it and it will never spit its dummy out again :)
Sorry you're not having much luck at the moment Ian....Hope the issues can be resolved easily! 🤞🤞
I can see why you keep the Invacar - getting in the 2 CV afterwards must seem like such a treat. A bit like having cold showers at Public Schools.
It always keeps you alert.
The joys of classic car ownership, hope TWC is ok
They used to make the Invacar close to where I live, an old friend of mine used to work there.
Thundersley? I took mine back there in May. Have a look for the Roadtrip videos.
@@HubNut Yes that's the place, do you have a link to the video ? They used to make Greeves motorbikes there too.

At least we now know the origin of the expression 'bad hair day'! But making it two in a row is definitely overdoing it!
2CV Shackle looks like the old metal framed bed spanner lol 😃😂😁
Currently in Croatia with our Volvo from the UK, all I can say is it is flipping hot and we don’t have aircon. I can’t imagine the 2CV would be safe on the autobahn, I was getting abuse for only doing 90mph.
Fab Viewing. Love a good invacar solo push run hahaha. The anxiety filled life of a classic car owner for sure.
Excellent video shame about the break downs but it happens to the best of us. Least you sorted Elle out which is the main thing. You can fix Twc after your trip.
Poor Twck sounds like an old stream train approaching your house up that hill at 14:10 lol! 🙁
Oh dear that's not good sorry about the breakdowns old cars can be fun in more ways than one sometime's all part of the journey , here's to a safe trip to Croatia and back with much reliability :)
The Puch Puked! Now I understand why so many people in the UK are Hiking along the roadways, they have British cars.I love the Invacar anyway!
I wonder where people are watching this? I'm sitting in a Windmill in Dereham, Norfolk waiting to show people around. Can anyone beat that?
At home, deep in the Cambridgeshire Fens having just bought a 1954 Ford 103e Popular
In my living room taking a break from pouring concrete in Pasadena, Maryland
In my sitting room on the couch in ireland after a 200km drive in my old cinquecento which got a new exhaust last week. I'm an amateur mechanic who drives/fixes cheap and cheerful old cars as a hobby
In my home on the Sunshine Coast (a misnomer) in British Columbia.
@@chrisbradley1192 it's boiling hot here.
Puts new meaning in going for a "run" in your car
So, what causes spark plugs to blow out anyway? I know you haven't gotten home yet to find out, but what generally is the catalyst that starts this off? You'd think that when torqued properly, even by feel, that it's one of those things that just can't happen, even with cylinder pressures and whatnot.
Love that 2CV. Love that haircut too! 😍
You have about as much luck as me with cars ian but we love them are change them but all good fun danny I filled the bottle up again on the 75 this morning keeping an eye on the engine great video my friend
The Saab, TWC and valve clearance error with Elly, they say bad luck comes in threes, so you should be safe from now on Ian. If you're going to have cars breaking down, it's better that it happens here than when you're in Europe with Elly. I've only ever had a plug blow out once, it really is quite an alarming experience.
Oh dear! It'll all come right. Don't fret
Why did Citroen use a knife edge rather than just a circular pin which would have been cheaper and simpler to manufacture, has a greater wear surface and places less stress on the eye (which are prone to cracking)?
The eyes aren't prone to cracking unless you ignore them for quite a long time (as in tens of thousands of miles).
Hi Ian, a "bad dress rehearsal" is needed for a faultless execution of your trip to Croatia.
Quick n dirty roadside fix for anybody who has stripped sparkplug thread: if you have some random electrical wire in the car, strip the isolation off, cut a copper strand off and wrap it around the sparkplug thread. Then carefully screw the plug back in the head. If you have no electrical wire on hand maybe you have some aluminium foil? That works as well. A fix like this might get jou home or to a workshop. Don 't worry about the thread in the head because that'll be buggered anyway. It will need a helicoil insert.
She didn't know who you were! Did you introduce yourself 'without the hair'? lol!!!
Not wishing to tell you something you already know, when you lay up the cars try to have them on stands so as not to flat spot tyres and disconnect batteries.
the resonance sounds just like when my air filter element works loose, especially when you open up the second choke.
I reckon, the cars don't recognise you.😗
Hey hubbers, you said in that clip about Rose Joints for the ends of the suspension arrangements... I'd be interested to hear you discuss that briefly..EDIT: oh.. i see you did... not sure i agree about adding complication... if it's less maintenance, surely that is what the 2cv is all about? I've never investigated that mod so i can't immediately see if there will be lots of drawbacks.. PS: the new haircut really suits you, takes 15 years off you that does matey
Feel for you, lots of problems, hang in there , well done
One of those days... sounds oddly familiar.
I believe you should actually loosen the manifold bolts before torquing the heads to do it properly. And you should always check valve clearences after torquing them, which you did... a few times.
Maybe grease up the kingpins as well before such a long journey...?
Kingpins were done just the other day. For retorquing, undoing the manifolds is not necessary.
Croatia in a 2CV (or any car for that matter) sounds brilliant fun.
Ah, the joys of old cars!
3:27: Ah, the good old gimbal days
10:31 Oh my goodness I forgot about the hair for a bit. Shocker!
14:15 Surprised how she doesn't move on one cylinder. My Visa still did about 10mph on one.
18:30 Yup, we got 35-ish here. Although it will be closer to 25 when you are here.
19:52 No need for a new you from where I'm sitting, but I'm happy you 're happy :D.
Blablaptschoooooo
(good 'coming soon', very well done)
I hope Ian takes the time to list the cities and towns he visits along his journey so we can track his travels. In the "mighty Dacia" series he didn't state all those stellar beautiful towns that he drove through. 😠
I can't promise that, but I'll bear it in mind.
@@HubNut If you can do it, I would appreciate it. Tracking your path is so fun! 🤗
Probably worn threads on the alloy head...wrap the plug thread in silver foil as a temporary measure....every man bag should carry a patch of silver foil...I owned a beetle...same problem 🤗
08:09 That's the way I like to see a 2cv - on axle stands … That engine has serious problems. Its knocking and you can hear piston slap immediately it starts.
Yeah, not ideal. Let's see if it can drive to Croatia and back!
Ian always carry a set of 2 spark plugs a set of HTs and a rotor arm and a set of points, when driving a 2cv. advice coming from a 1979 2cv6 driver that had many happy hours broken down o my gear box blow up on a run to Swindon from Cardiff on the mike 4 o happy days.😊
Rotor arm on a 2CV? Are you sure? ;-) She's on 123 ignition, but I will take a points box with me just in case.
@@HubNut sorry Ian got a bit muddled I used to carry a case with bits hot my 2cv6 and my morris mini 850cc points were for the mini. Never went out without my case of bits and bobs saved me a good few times over the years. Now you need to carry a diagnostic device and be a member of a tow service. (O happy days) 🚗
The hair makes you look ten years younger and it has gone to a good cause.
How was this June 2019!!! I'm sure since Covid, times been on fast forward!
Ummm... so why do the knife edges have a triangular cross-section instead of circular? By putting all the loads from the shackle on the vertexes of the knife edge, the vertexes should wear first- which seems to be what you saw. Or is the triangular cross-section to allow volume for grease?
I know envying someone else's life isn't healthy at all but I really envy yours Ian!
