2CV to Croatia: New engine first drive, oil fail...

  • In this video, I get my 2CV back together and go for a lovely 70-mile test drive. Then I discover the oil leak, which is going all over the exhaust and brakes. Lovely!
Still, this engine seems very sweet, and with a bit more work, will hopefully get us to Croatia for the World Meeting of 2CV Friends! In the next part, I will deal with the oil leak. Need to crack on as the ferry departs on Friday night!

I May Have a Dig at Time to Time about Welsh Weather but the Gloriously Green Fields and Tree's are Something to behold.
When living in one of the Driest States of Australia, where much of the year Is Brown & Frazzled.
With the Extra thought that at any moment it could turn to a Blazing Desalination ( and no Red Dragon Required. Just a Dingbat with an Angle Grinder..!!)
All that Green does look very appealing to this Ex Essex Knobhead, that remembers Beautiful Meadows and a Dozen different type's of Butterflies.
With No Deadly Spiders, Snakes, Sharks or even Jellyfish quite happy to spoil ya day..!!
So Elly flying through A Green Welsh Countryside is something to behold. Oil leak or Not.. ! Cheers 😎

All in all Ian i think it's gone pretty well. Such a big risk putting a unknown engine in. With the exception of the oil leak it would seem she's sweet. Certainly a success in my books, could have been a lot worse. Yes, it's a pain stripping her down again to sort it, but other than that she should be good to take you on your travels. And don't forget, you were so lucky that that stud pulling out when it did was a damned good thing, imagine if it had waited another 2 or 3 weeks before deciding to let go! Would have been a massive headache. Good luck with the seal change, fingers crossed all will be well from now on.

Sorry you are having such a bad time with the 2CV engines, but thank you for a pretty tour of Ceredigion along the way, which brings back happy memories of annual trips for repping work round there back in the 90s. Even earlier than that, your fond recollections of the Vauxhall Corsa as being the car you learnt to drive in and pass your test in, brought equally fond back memories of myself and my first car in 1976, WGO 828G, a peacock blue Vauxhall Viva 1600 ohc, that I learnt to drive in, and passed my test in. Happy days.
Good luck with the repairs, and do continue to enjoy the beauty of your surroundings along the way!

The good thing with 2cv's Ian is they are so simple and easy to work on even though most mechanics are scared to death of working on them! I've grown up working with 2cv's, Dyane's & Ami's as my Dad is an absolute 2cv nutter like you!! & even bought them new in the 70s & 80s. He restores them as a hobby now as he's in his 70s but he does a couple a year and has tons of spares.

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 5 лет назад

Must say that I'm impressed by the elegant simplicity of the 2CV design. I remember a French exchange teacher back in 1975 who had one. It had pink flowers on and she wore very short dresses. I've had a hard spot for them ever since.

10/10 for your patience and endurance. Looking on the positive side of things, at least you have a car that is primarily open to a bit of DIY.........unlike my JagDeo X-type; MOT and service due tomorrow - because if there is anything wrong, I haven't got ANY confidence these days, that I can actually fix it myself. It takes around 45 minutes (and a tiny hand the size of an Action Man) to even change one of the poxy headlight bulbs! Sincere best wishes getting Elly ready for the long Croatia Road Trip mate. Let's hope she doesn't get sea sick. 👍

@Chris Stevens I'm really surprised, the 2CV body appears to be vastly simpler in construction than a mini? The chassis looks to be very simple as well, surely no harder to repair than e.g. an old Landy? That said a new reproduction chassis seems pretty inexpensive at ~£750

Your plight reminds me of a book I once read years ago. "How to build and race an 850 Mini" In a nutshell the owner took a bog standard 850cc mini and race tuned it. He told us the viewer everything he'd done to achieve this. Needless to say it wasn't plain sailing, even on the eve of his first race he was stripping the engine down in the small hours to overcome yet another problem. You remind me of him. Enjoy that walk, have another cup of tea and go back to it. Refreshed! - We are right behind you in spirit. 5* :-)

The plus side is that that it works and pulls well without clouds of smoke so once the leak is sorted it should be good to go. Hard to tell on the video but it actually sounds smoother and better than the old engine - perhaps those upgraded barrels had an issue (too much compression at 180 ? ). We know from Foxanne that you will overcome come what may.

Other than that oil leak you know that "new" engine to be a good one.

Well done so far Hubnut, hopefully it will come together long enough to do the Croatia trip then iron out any long term problems after that, must be said, Elly's timing for this could have been better, she might like the thought of being away, I think she has new friends with the trains that pass from time to time, she will miss them, keep on keeping on :)

Wicked, can't wait to see how you're going to solve this one.
