Xenoblade Chronicles 2 might have the best soundtrack in the series, the area themes in particular really stand out

Yeah, they basically took a small leitmotif from Engage The Enemy and expanded it into the chorus of Counterattack. Xenoblade 2 LOVES its leitmotifs and it's one of my fav OSTs of any game.

So at 2:01 that particular bit that you're thinking of there is similar to Engage The Enemy from Xenoblade 1. Counterattack is the Engage The Enemy of Xenoblade 2, playing in similar situations and scenes. I'm no music expert but I think the word you're looking for is motif, since Counterattack follows a similar progression and structure to Engage The Enemy.
Also as for the composers, they're back from the first Xenoblade, plus a few new faces, minus Yoko Shimamura. ACE was in Xenoblade 1, but ACE+ in Xenoblade 2 is the duo, ACE, plus Kenji Hiramatsu. The reason the music sounds so different, is because for Xenoblade 2 they wanted to go in a more bombastic in your face direction with the music. This time, ACE+ took the reins and composed most of the songs in this game. Xenoblade 3 will end up toning it back down for area themes due to the setting of the game but much of the game's battle music and big "Engage The Enemy" type songs are done by ACE+ again.

Yup! This is by Kenji Hiramatsu who worked on Engage the Enemy from 1!

The composers from XC2 are almost the same as for the first and third game (except for Yoko Shimomura, she only worked on the first title)

This theme is so anime "the power of friendship" especially in the context of XC2. And I'm totally fine with it 😊
    XC2's soundtrack is really good

Great song! This and a couple other songs in the XC2 soundtrack actually remind me a little bit of like...the chorus of Roundball Rock (NBA on NBC) theme, for some reason. Maybe the way the guitars and keyboard and drums and (sometimes) brass are all arranged. XC2 is no slouch in the soundtrack department, that's for sure. Definitely more 'anime' than 1 and honestly I'm good with that.

Look, I am EXTREMELY critical of Xenoblade 2... until I get to the music. Then everything is right. I can accept any kind of bullshit if it comes together with this music.
I am exaggerating of course, Xenoblade 2 was a very good game. But I can be very nitpicky with it, much more than with 1 and 3, and specially the Torna expansion for Xenoblade 2 (that thing is PURE gold).
But the music... I can't nitpick. It's way too good. I am a little sad that you are not gonna experience it for the first time in game, some of the songs hit very strong for the first time.
