Kenji Hiramatsu did not have to go so freaking hard for a normal battle theme but I’m so glad he did. The Torna soundtrack is a freaking masterpiece. Great video Marco!!
That pretty much goes for the Xenoblade 1-3 soundtracks as a whole, *every* track goes as hard as possible no matter how minor. Even the peaceful happy exploration themes will still roll out a harp, 14-piece woodwind section, and a full timpani and bass drum line.
Actually I think it's worth it to go that hard for a normal battle theme because that's the one you'll hear the most. It's a very good approach in my opinion. This way you're not easily bored of it and you can enjoy it for a very long time, especially when it's very catchy and complex.
Aah i feel bad because I loved everything about xc2, but i couldnt get through the community building (sidequest) grind, that locks you out of the story... why does it have to be like this ;(
Good news! I think it released yesterday, i did not play yet but from what people are saying about it and the trailer i think it's going to be awesome.
You touch on the different instruments taking turns, which I actually feel ties into the gameplay of Torna! One of the core components of the battle system in the DLC is the various characters in your party swapping back and forth during combat, taking turns between frontline attacking, and supporting from the rear. The main protagonists have even developed their own unique fighting style where they pass their weapons back and forth during combat. Later on they end up teaching this to the rest of the party, unlocking everyone's highest level special moves, which are all tag team attacks!
This is exactly what I was thinking too! Each instrument coming into the spotlight feels exactly like switching characters in combat. I wonder how much of that was intentional by the devs and composers, either way it really elevates how cool this track is.
This is from a prequel to the main game, and because the main game uses rock for it's battle themes, they decided to use jazz for this one and man what a great decision. The rest of this campaign also uses jazzy instruments and more natural sounds, including non-synth arraignments of previous themes, and it's so wonderful. My favorite Xenoblade song has to be "Our Paths May Never Cross"
I’m so glad you got a chance to listen to this song! Battle! Torna is one of my favorite Xenoblade songs, it’s just so much fun to listen to, with all the crazy jazz and everything. You definitely need to listen to Time to Fight (Bionis Shoulder) from the first game’s expansion and the remix of Time to Fight, Brilliant Wings, from XC3. Also yes, Battle! Torna is a normal battle theme. Xenoblade’s normal battle themes go hard
Easily one of the best battle themes in the series. If you want more amazing Xenoblade music I highly recommend listening to the Moebius battle theme from Xenoblade 3. One of the most unique songs I've heard with some insane choirs.
I see your Time to Fight! (amazing) and raise you FogBeast Battle. The way the piano and violin continually go back and forth and play off of each other is beyond description.
YES one of my favorite battle themes! Torna is such a wonderful experience for being a DLC and is imo one of the best DLC experiences I've had since it feels like so much more than just story extension, or add ons like what's seen in other games. It holds so much weight in the story, the music, the character backgrounds being fleshed out, and combat system; it's all so good. If you'd ever get around to it Marco I'd highly recommend you play it after finishing 2, whenever you have the spare time. The music is wonderful in Torna!
1:50 Aw, you just described the landscape of Torna, the Golden Country. Costa del Sol wouldn't be too far off of a description either. Quite fitting analogy :)
Kenji Hiramatsu is the composer for Battle!! (Torna) if I recall. Hiramatsu-san knew damn well what he was doing with this battle theme, I would not be surprised if he listened to how groovy Persona 5's battle theme, Last Surprise, is and went like: All right Shoji Meguro, I'm coming after you. It cannot be a coincidence because P5 came out in 2017 (2016 in Japan) and just a year later Torna comes out with this awesome battle theme. Fun fact: Torna is considered as a game of its own, it even has its own cartridge. By the way, I would like to see you react to "Godsibb" from Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sparch Zarathustra.
They did a couple of live-action music videos for XC1 back in the day to promote the 3DS and I WISH they'd do more. The composers aren't afraid to let multiple instruments run loose - the trend has only continued into XC3. The level of sophistication present in the drum work in tracks like this and a few more in XC3 really makes me wish they'd give us either a peek into the recording or more live-action videos to appreciate.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has one of the best OST i've ever heard. I really really recommend Counterattack and Drifting Soul. These songs are stuck in my mind forever...
A fan-favourite, this one. And it started something of a trend for the series, where the standard battle theme would be really cheerful and upbeat, like you could almost(?) dance to it (as you mentioned), compared to the dramatic and more serious, aggressive energies of Xenoblade 1 and 2 battle themes. Future Connected and Xenoblade 3 follow through in this way. And personally, I concur, I think it's a fantastic battle track to listen to.
you should definitely listen to "The Power of Jin" and see if you can guess his character from just the music, it has no lyrics but it's definitely a good one
If you're not going "what?" at least a little when listening carefully to a Xenoblade track does it even count as Xenoblade? The regular battle theme for Future Connected is arguably even better.
The classic jazz combo in this is great - piano, drum, upright bass. A lot of times in video game music you get symphonic rock, where an electric guitar, electric bass and drum take center stage with orchestra as backup, but this replace those with the aforementioned instruments. I love the part of the song where each one gets a brief solo.
Spoilers I really hated the song. Not because of how it sounds, but because of how emotionally overwhelming it became for me whenever I explored the Decaying Titan. As a person that loves dragons, Torna is my favourite Titan and seeing it run-down and dilapidated is devastating whenever I transition from T~TGC to the maingame.
This is my all time fave JRPG normal battle themes so far as it's just so lively and just continues to want you to fight more to get more of the soundtrack out, enjoy and immerse yourself in the fight.
After all that orchestral stuff in the main game and hearing this in the first battle within the first minutes into the DLC really pleasantly surprised me. I did not expect to hear such a jam. Really hypes you up.
My favourite xenoblade battle theme is fog beast battle (which you HAVE to listen to its insane) but this is a close second, and moebius would probably be my third favourite
One of the best things about this song is how it conveys how we, as players, should feel about the characters by playing Torna after the main game. We've already been given so much context in the base game about how so many of the characters were proficient fighters, they're drivers and blades with skills we can put our trust on, so the battles are part of their daily tasks. Fights in this game are not easy but you know you can trust your characters so much more in this iteration, and that reflects very well on the songs.
You come to appreciate the battle theme, as it's the one bit of consistent levity you get, given the DLC is a prequel to the base game, so you have a pretty good idea of where it's going.
I think this is my favorite Xenoblade theme, and it is indeed the regular battle them for Torna (which technically is an expansion pack for 2 but it can be pretty much considered as it's own game that also serves as a prequel to XC2)
Yeh, listening to this you just wanna dance somehow. It's just soo good. I love this theme alot. Glad you got to listen to it and well seeing your reaction is just hilarious. No it's literally the normal battle theme. Edit: as i made that comment before i had watched the entire video, you do mention the alternating instruments more. also i love the dancing you do the last 5 minutes or so of the video, it really shows how enjoyable the music can be and how people in general can just resonate to it in such an expressive and in my opinion beautiful way
Yay XC2 music! 🎉 I'm glad you're liking Torna music 😊Torna is btw prequel to the XC2, the plot happens hundred years before XC2 plot, I definitely recommend trying it💕
2:50 The fluidity also leads to the battle system in Torna, which is different from the main game, and I can even imagine that had the developers had more time, they might have even switched the main game one out for this one.
What's so special and works so well about this song being as jazzy as it is, would be the stark difference Torna and base game Xenoblade 2. Xenoblade 2 has structure and strategy to the combat of its world, but in the past of Torna's story, it doesn't exist yet. There's no structure. It's hectic and frantic, but everyone makes it work. This strange elegance in the game's combat is exhilarating, which only gets heightened by the music playing into all the same ideas with its own structure. Plenty of the base game's soundtrack is inspired by jazz, but Torna leans very heavily into it. Both games just have fun soundtracks that remain incredibly interesting and memorable all throughout. Hopefully you take many more trips into the world of Alrest and get to experience some of the more obscure tracks in addition to the fan favorites. Some of my personal favorites are "A Ship in a Stormy Sea," and "Jump Towards The Morning Sun."
Video number: 1 of asking Marco to do the OST from the game “Haven” by the game bakers (I know he usually doesn’t take song requests from RUclips comments but I can’t support his patreon right now) I’ve never played xenoblade, but this song is quite the bop! Keep up the excellent work Marco!
This song has to be a tribute to the battle theme from Breath of Fire 3 (Do Your Best!). That whole soundtrack is also awesome if you haven't listened to it :)
Man, Torna's combat system is the greatest leap in quality from a base game I have ever experienced. Went from the sleepwalking combat of the base game to one of the most mechanically rich, reactive combat systems I've ever played. Even after playing Xenoblade 3, I wish they had built off the concept of this Vanguard system. Boss fights with this system were so much more engaging. Also, this theme just slaps endlessly. It kept me jazzed for the entire 20 hours of my playthrough.
Becouse the combat is alot faster compared to the base game this soundtrack fits it all perfectly, really love it, even if the expansion was't as fun as i wanted.
I'm getting some real Melty Blood: Type Lumina vibes from this OST. The jazz piano + high energy strings always makes me want to jump in a room with some friends and beat each other senseless~ Xenoblade is another one of those games that I really want to try because of the soundtrack, but I keep getting sidetracked... Day 6 of begging Marco to check out a boss OST from PSO2 (I'm still advocating for the story version of Sodam, but to keep my pestering diverse I'll drop some alternatives: "Dark Falz Persona - Over the Universe" and "Dark Falz Rank 2 Climax | Meteorn's Song Remix" are pretty dang good) Since I've started asking for it I went back to check out some of the OST, and realized that actually a lot of the best tracks *aren't* attached to bosses. As an example, one of my favorite tracks of the entire game "Ashes of Sorrow" simply is a character theme for a god-like character we meet in the third episode of story missions

The best part about the unique fighting style is why they developed such a revolutionary technique: they were too broke for a second weapon.
And that basically goes on to become the standard for the entire world of Alrest
I wasn’t expecting the song genre but what a BOP. The piano really elevates this track IMO
