So after 5,000 miles (8,000km) here are my thoughts of Tesla Model Y ownership.
This is not just a journalist review after a couple of hours. This is a review after living with the Model Y Long Range as a family. What’s it really like? What’s good and bad? What are the running costs? Any warranty issues and repairs?
I hope you find it useful. All in all, it’s certainly one of the best family electric cars you can get.
Thanks for watching!

Hahaha epic ending! Good to see that the ride quality aint a bottleneck for you to keep driving a Tesla. Nice videos, keep it up :D Greets from Holland
That ending was so funny yet understandable if you have the finance.
Got a Y with 4K miles and same efficiency with lot of motorway miles. I’m still watching your videos even though I own one 😂
Great vid! I like how easy it seemed to order parts from Tesla and fix the damages yourself! Fairly cheap as well. Brilliant stuff.
Love your work Richard. You bang out these vids giving fact after fact and no bullshit; It’s a winning recipe. Thanks for all the info. Can’t wait to ditch my Lexus hybrid in favour of a Y which is coming (I hope!) in September.
Thanks for your recommendation. And have fun with the MY P! Looking forward to the vids including the beast
I've had mine for 14 months now but in North America. Not a single problem yet and I concur with all you've said about yours!
Thanks for the conversions at 8:11
Whoever added those is the real hero
That ending was class haha, great review and awesome video!
Thank you very much for the video, especially km-mile conversion!
Lol I love the ending 😂
Nicely done!
Hey just came here from carwow, love your content keep it up man!
Great work, love the metric translation to kw/h/100km!
Another great video
Can’t wait to get mine (mid - end June 🤞)
Then it’ll be a trip to Bournemouth to visit you & get some upgrades/extras installed on the car, before it starts it’s life as a Taxi in & around Stansted airport 😊
My MYLR in grey delivery is showing July but has been jumping between May and July on an almost daily basis. I can’t wait and have all the accessories and home charger already installed just teasing me whenever I get home. Good honest video.
Done a similar distance in mine and it really is as good as you say. My complaint is that the paint is not tough enough, but with a front bumper that reasonably priced it could easily be replaced after around 3 years. Best car I've ever had, and by quite a margin. Glad to see you've now got the best colour combination ;)
All modern cars have the same water based paints! I totally agree with you.
Recommend a wrap - I’ve wrapped mine and it’s really tough and looks great
@@sryev9410 did you do this yourself, if so what colour paint? I’m about to wrap my front bumper but being black I’m not feeling confident on getting a good finish.
@@acoustonaut780 ours is matte black and we did the whole car. We paid a garage who specialize in teslas to do it, they’re super popular you have to book in advance it cost 700 quid including brake caliper paint
until now I have no issue with the paint on mine. But its an insect magnet
Such good content, as always, Richard. You and the team are banging out decent videos that I’m sure are helping drive up EV awareness & appetite. I’m debating whether to sell my 2017 MS 90D and get a MY through the company lease scheme…I think this video is persuading me towards the Y…
Love my Y too but mrs has Kerbed near side rear and front just two months in🙄. In all honesty I suspect the front may have been a rock or stone as it’s more a single point impact area. Good thing is that black/grey touch in paint hides a multitude of sins🙂. Brilliant car that’s a lot less crash prone suspension than my last Audi A3 sportback and much more practical too👍. Good video and nice ending😉
Really great review I know exactly what you mean with the clicking sound in headliner on sunny days it seems to have settled down now
Your videos ‘sold’ me a Model Y and the John O’Groats video convinced my wife we won’t be sat ‘for hours’ whilst it charges!! Thanks
I ordered a MYLR Blue/Black at the start of the month and (so far) it’s due at the end of June. Though, I know that that could possible change due to Shanghai lockdown this Quarter. Can’t wait!
Good Morning Mr Symonds. I was so tempted when I saw her advertised. As you know from the Club, EDDs running wild due to awful situation in Shanghai. May/June now Aug/September. However, I will hang in for my Red/White/Geminis. Red seems to be the most delayed due, I suppose, to so few being ordered/batched. Thanks for another excellent video; to the manner born!
As always Rich! Good work son xx from New Zealand.
That ending though... Brilliant! ^_^
This is a fantastic video, cheers!
the suspense at wondering what the heck you would be replacing it with.... brilliant ending !!
Was sad to see you selling the model Y on. Thought what would that mean for future vlog content. Then epic ending of another Model Y 😀. Keep up the great content.
Can’t wait for mine ordered blue/white 19” last year
😂!! Brilliant and unexpected ending!! You must have ordered that a while back as white a big waiting times now…
Brilliant car… unless things change massively in 3 years when my model 3 lease ends, I will swap for a model Y no doubt, white interior, 20” wheels (you convinced me there!😉 as definitely prefer Michelin tyres), acceleration boost… 👍👍
Carwow, just subscribed 🔥
Brilliant ending. I got mine a month ago and I just cant stop driving it, though at this price point I would have wanted a bit more comfort but hey no complaints especially when I look at the gas prices :)
I drive the Telsa model 3 LG and did speak to a guy when we where charging last month, he had the model Y and told me he switched from Audi A6 avant and that Y had much more space. For me still to big and we are a family of 3. Still model 3 has more inside and also front rear trunk space then my A4 avant before.
They’re so deceptive aren’t they. My M3LR has so much more space than my BMW 530e.
Black 👌
Great video mate
Great video and epic end! haha ;D
That ending 😂😍👌
Great video as usual, noticed no badge on the back .
Great honest review of the model Y, when you changed the bumper why did you not re apply the number plate holder, I just feel it doesn’t look right with the curve.
Nice one. We have a 2020 Model 3 LR and are testing cars to replace it next March. So far the BMW iX3 is our favourite of the competition but the Model Y takes some beating as an overall package.
You did well to be able to get a new one… I have been waiting for ages and despite being told I was down for a May delivery I am still waiting and nobody can give me any indication as to when it will arrive 🤷🏻♂️ I can see why yours has held its value
It’s used, nearly new. From a private seller
In a California Y I had a rattle near the driver's B pillar. I exercised the shoulder belt height adjustment and it stopped.
Got mine coming (supposedly) in July cant wait !
Well!?
Another great warts and all video. Wish I could afford one though.
Ever thought that over 8 years it might be cheaper than your current car?
P.S. What's your take on punctures; carry a spare, foam, or call the road services. Weirdly perhaps, I have no range anxiety but lots of puncture worry due to bad run flat experience with the X3.
Thanks again for lending Matt the Model Y
Great content , enjoyed the performance boost drag race too. My son picked up a black MYL Same day you got your blue one. You fitted the fantastic alcantara dash upgrade same day for him. Any ideas as to where from and when my MYP might turn up here in the U.K.? Just no info anywhere..
Hi Ian, Dave’s MY was the second one that had the Alcantara trims fitted in UK! No news about the MYP deliveries other than what it says on their website. Late 2022. Thanks for watching our videos 💪🏻
And it's sold already! good call!
I did notice that seat belt buckle rattle in my model y too,
Well done Richard for lending the Model Y to Mat, just seen the carwow race
Nice ending 😁
Amen .... the hymn of praise was brilliant
What PSI do you recommend for comfort in the model y I saw on one of your videos you have a bit lower but can’t find it
Same in china (work and live in china but from uk) we’ve used ours for 15 months and it’s worth more now than when I bought it
Looking forward to ours being delivered, hopefully not too long 🤞 Any recommendations for insurance in the UK, getting some crazy inconsistencies in the quotes so far
I am finding the same!
Thank you for this review! Can you also say something about the comfort of the Model Y LR (with 20 inch wheels) vs the Model Y Performance? Or make a video about it.. :-)
We don’t have the performance in the UK yet… not until end of 2022 at best
I prefer it in the blue 🤣 super review 👍
great video apart from the sentry mode assumption. my BMW has the same feature since 2018 that allows me to record as i'm driving and parked and can view video live or via the cloud. plus alerts me of crashes, etc. plus side over the tesla is that it doesn't drain my battery in 5 days if left at an airport. overall MY is the best electric family suv not the best family suv!
No BMW's don't come with this as standard. Plus you'd need to put in the camera's to make it work. All Tesla's come with sentry mode as standard.
So I've been checking out Insurance for the Y , in the UK its group 50 , why if parts are so reasonable and it has multiple systems to prevent accidents?
Ordered a Model Y end of Feb, actually test driving this week. Had been thinking of cancelling and trying a used Ioniq 5 instead, but with used prices as they are I can probably just keep it for a few months and sell if it doesn’t work out for me.
Nearly a 12 month wait on the Ionic 5. 😬
You aren’t going to swap your MY for an ionic ! That’s just not going to happen ! 😂
Hi Richard & Co, I've heard an awful lot of complaints about the firmness of the model Y ride and see there are air suspension kits available. Have you fitted any of these to a model Y and would you recommend it?
You should do a 5,100mile review next!
How much is the 19 inch wheel upgrade likely to impair the more refined ride? Is all of the improved comfort from the tyres or suspension revisions?
Another great video and captures my own thoughts on the Model Y just over 1k miles in. I test drove the car on 20s but ordered the 19s with it being a lease car and would agree that there’s no appreciable difference in ride quality. I do have the occasional headrest rattle sadly, but nothing compared to the child seats (or children in them!). Worth noting the live camera view is only available with a premium connectivity subscription I think? Oh and I covered my wood with a carbon effect trim but your alcantara ones do look good…are they available by mail order? 😁
Interesting. I don't like the look of the 19s either but thought I'd have to go with them for better ride quality. Was there really no difference with the 20s?
@@farazqureshi1614 the 19s look better with the aero covers removed, but the 20s are still the best choice from an aesthetic perspective. On stock tyres, I don’t believe there’s much in the ride. It’s firm on the 20s and still firm on the 19s. As mentioned in the video, I think the EV specific Hankook tyres have quite a stiff sidewall anyway. Michelins or Contis on the 19” wheel may have a more compliant ride but there’s no getting away from it being setup for a more sporting drive.
I’ve curbed my MY loads on the black rims , actually it was my wife lol. I love it as much as you say. Huge, fun, amazing and the ride quality isn’t a big problem cause it’s just so damn fun and so damn big
Sentry mode, as Richard described is excellent. However I rarely use it because it drains the battery quite quickly.
The time it would be most useful, perhaps an airport car park… is the most challenging, because you risk 20% SOC when you return from your vacation.
Can you set a minimum SOC?
@@rogerstarkey5390 I don’t think you can choose it !
I may be wrong, but I believe it’s fixed at 20%.
That will certainly get you to a supercharger, it’s about 108km on my MY. But who wants to charge on the way home from Heathrow ? 😂
I ordered a blue Model Y with white interior just like yours about a month ago, expect delivery in September
Same here. Expected delivery September also. Though it has jumped about from June to October and back to September a few times..
And yes... I do check the Estimated delivery.. every single day.... More than once. ☺️
I’m in the MY waiting club. It’s a rollercoaster.
@@mattmecham oh, just like the stock
Same ordered mine at beginning of the month in Black/Black and it says august
Reclining seat option in the back? I was pretty sure that came as standard mate.
Got mine on order Tesla site says Sept - Oct delivery can't wait
I do have a question about the wireless phone chargers. A first world problem, certainly.
I know on some vehicles the phone chargers can't fit larger phones. I think my new phone measures 6.5 x 3.1 inches (Samsung S22 Ultra). Can the inserts on a Tesla accommodate these?
Hi
I use S21 ultra and have no problem at all. S22 ultra is very close to size of s21ultra.
(Guy behind camera)
Great video. Could you help with a dilemma. I’m due to order my first EV through the work scheme. Love the model Y but EV6 is a fair bit cheaper. With mostly motorway mileage and a commute to work of 230 miles one way, then parked up for 3 days before the return. What are the pros/cons. Thanks for any help!!!
You might need to stop and charge in the EV6...
A bit of a letdown that the front armrest isn't white too. The rear armrest could use the type of cupholder that slots in and out, giving you the full armrest to use it as such. I also hope you will get an option to turn off the "lasers" from the sentry mode.
It would get discoloured very quickly, same reason the steering wheel isn't white
@@thelifeofbatteries2603 Guess they know more than VW
With the recent price drop we are seriously considering pulling out of the ioniq 5 and moving to a model Y.
Even on the 3 it seems like the rear seatbelts don't "rest quite right" by the seat
No loading fix in boot ?? why did they not put one in for tie down ??
Great honest review Richard albeit I'm surprised Tesla are letting you buy another new one within such a short period, that's assuming it's another one straight out of the wrapper?
No it’s a nearly new one I picked up. (See last video driving it back from Scotland)
@@RSEV yep I watched your camping trip 😁
Being in the US, I love my 2023 model Y long range vehicle which I just recently picked up from Tesla. The features this vehicle has are amazing and still learning many of them. My model Y vehicle came with HW4 and the newer cameras.
The model Y gives me plenty of storage space, Dual motor AWD, single pedal driving, and the seating front and back have plenty of room for all of us. Being retired, the vehicle is mainly for around town driving, short single charge trips, and do home charging which takes no time at all to charge from 70 to 90 percent most the time. I do not plan at this time to get the EAP or FSD addon driving options. The basic Auto Pilot should be good enough for me right now - if so desired, I can always buy the other modes of driving.
Nice to have the Sentry and dashcam modes. I only turn them on when I am out driving around and parking at different locations. I turn them off when back home. Still debating whether I want to keep the Premium connectivity for all the added screen extras. I mainly listen to the radio and never have time to do the streaming or internet features, too busy driving. Do I really need the great graphical maps - not sure yet, haven't really used them yet.
Thanks for your video review and take care.
Hi. Great video and content. One question though...about the range. You didn't mention if this was with the AC constantly on. I've just had my Y for 5 days and I'm seeing 100miles range disappear for only 50 miles driving.... and that is around town no motorway or dual carriageways but with AC permanently on. is there a problem with the car I'm thinking?
Climate always on auto! Always. Crikey I’m not going to sit there cold or hot! Plentiful range to have it however you want it.
Your “50 miles using 100 miles”. What percentage of battery is this 50 miles using? Is this lots of short journeys?
@RSymons RSEV hi. Really appreciate the response. First Tesla but my 3rd EV…. And yes, so far it’s been lots of short journeys… no more than 10miles each and all ‘city’. Generally I thought this was better in an EV and the hated the motorway 70mph trips as really drains the power. Is the Tesla different in this way? Ta.
Have you driven the model y performance? Is the ride quality that much worse with the 21's? And is performance of the car worth it over the LR with acceleration boost? I'm torn between the two
Rich, why did I feel pressured into buying the car watching this video, if it comes with free floor mats and a full tank, i'll have word with the Mrs, oh! don't forget the free coffee/hot chocolate 😂🙂
Why can't we view the internal cabin camera on the in car screen?
Black is always the best colour🤷👍💯
Would you recommend the vinyl number plates? I wonder if they help range (even if only slightly). Also, how did you fill the holes behind it?
I like red. My Model 3 is red and if/when I change the next one will be red too. Recently came across one thing I don't like. The emergency door release in the back.
I have a 2018 Model S P100D in black with Infotainment & charging upgrade, would you recommend I stick with it or change to a Model Y Performance?
I had P100D as a loan car while my 2020 M3P was in for repair a couple of weeks ago. The S is much quieter and noticably faster (when in ludicrous or ludicrous+ mode). However the 3 (and I'd assume the Y) felt so much tighter and more agile. On UK roads the S also felt very big. It's much easier and more satisfying to drive quickly in the 3. The S felt like a saggy old bus in comparison - although the S probably wins on passenger comfort.
In my opinion, the 3/Y feels better engineered, but I'd definitely recommend a test drive.
Black does not work well in the American South. Love my new blue long range. Great review!
Happy with my 19's at 42psi the tyres are fairly good, very expensive to replace. handling is good wouldn't want softer suspension setup.
before you sell the car we need a drag race with the new one with performance boost to see what the difference is?
Video coming soon from me plus I’m in a future carwow video about it
@@RSEV just seen the Carwow one, one of the best to date.
Really needs two Model Y long ranges, one normal and one with sport mode to see the difference.
I
I have a similar annoying rattle on occasions in the back of my model 3. Just cannot find it.
We are going down to one vehicle so the wife has decided to sell her car and that I will sell my model 3 and we will get a model Y.
Absolutely no chance I said so yesterday we ordered a model Y 😂
Red with 19s although now I am regretting not ordering the 20s.
September to November delivery though so I can still enjoy the model 3 for now.
I wonder if getting a forged/ lighter wheels on 19” will increase the range? Any recommendations?
range is an issue at first but you soon grow to accommodate it and notice that you effortlessly charge your card home and always have enough range to get anywhere you want to go. If you plan a road trip Tesla lead you to the super charging station where again you can effortlessly charge while you take a rest but every time I’ve done that the car is always ready before I am.
Damn it I’m thinking of changing my colour combo now
You won’t have any problem selling that beauty. Sold my ‘19 long range 3 for almost what I paid for it new then 5 days later took delivery of my 2022 LR 3 that I paid $1k less for out the door 🤑
God damn! I love this car. Cant wait to have it down under! C'mon Tesla!
fantastic video as always mate, and an unexpected twist. I was wondering to myself which one you'll replace it with, and second later got my answer 😜
safety and cameras are biggest factors for me when considering Tesla over competition having more luxurious interiors or ride quality.
I didn't know about cost of part replacement, so that was good information that you covered.
your videos are very informative and pleasant to watch. keep 'em coming
When it comes to the front bumper change; what about costs of installation? Sensors? The parts themselves seem to be quite cheap, but the technology bits are the real cost usually.
Saw a US quote for changing the screen.
As I recall, $1300 for the screen, (so, apple prices, nobody complains about those) labour? $61.
@@rogerstarkey5390 Android users complain about apple prices xD
Did you buy the black new? Did Tesla start delivering in the UK? I'm not aware that there is any ship that has arrived to the UK from Shanghai with Teslas since April
No it’s used, nearly new
@@RSEV thanks for the clarification. I saw where you bought it in one of your previous videos. Cheers
The only "complaint" I would have is the center wheel column, it could have an air conditioner passthrough stand for a center wheel screen that has the speed, turn signal indicator, cruise control set speed , warnings for proximity while parking, acceleration and regeneration settings , battery and range level , active and normalized consumption and overall sound volume , so if you want to play something it will not start at maximum volume by surprise. But what i wish for the next year , the 2024 model and onward to have , are aor suspension and air line outlet for pumping the tires or air mattrises with dual settings of either volume or pressure , and an automated two level sun roof cover of 50% mesh and 100% refpector with insulated bottom for burn avoidance, and maybe window 50% mesh that can also be used as insect (mosquitos) shield for camping and for insect filled areas where you want natural air from the windows, using the same 50% mesh from the sun roof, but having it reinforced with spider pattern wire that makes children unable to rip it apart.
Hello Richard, I am stuck and can’t decide between a i4 m50 and a Model y performance. I know are different cars. I have been electric since 2015, had a model 3 and i3 before that. I love the quality and the comfort of the I4 I am aware of all the peculiarities of the Tesla but I can’t decide. It all comes to comfort and performance at the end. I have two young kids and we love to travel by car. What do you think ? Thank you your videos are amazing and very informative. Ciao from Florence.
I pick up a new i4 m50 in a couple days…. So more on this to follow.
But the i4 is for sure the most comfortable
@@RSEV I know you are, I hope not in red like the one you tested 😜i was hopping you picked it up already, I have two orders at the moment, one for and i4m50 with an estimated delivery date end of July and and MYP in June. I am so undecided, I believe comfort is number one in the bmw too. Thank you for your great detailed videos. Will keep you posted. Lorenzo
You mentioned the phone key being a positive but my iphone 11 unlocks the car from my living room, very annoying, so have it switched off. Not tried the keyfob yet though. Wish passive entry could be turned off.
Weird, phone key usually only works from a couple metres away max…!
I have an iPhone 12. It works perfectly. I don’t even carry a keycard now ( though I admit that’s a tad reckless 😂)
Would be great too if there were some guides on how to soften the ride for those 2021 and earlier models.
very recent models seems to have softer ride
How much did it cost you to go 5000 miles vs an Ice Car
Of course the detrimental effect of 20’s over 19’s is the loss of range.
I much prefer how they look over the 19’s though
get the 19s, and take them to a good alloy shop to get them sprayed same colour as 20s. £80 each or so. Well worth it
Great video, shame you’re selling it as I was hoping for more MY content! I have a MY arriving hopefully at the end of June. I went for the 19” for ride comfort but watching this I wish I’d gone for the 20’s now!
What car will you get next?
Did you actually watch the video?
Thomas I show at the end that I do have another identical (but black) Y to replace it (for now!)
Ah sorry I commented before finishing the video!
I also regret not paying the extra £2100….
