What a fantastic review. Only just caught up with it as I’m in sunny Cyprus this week. I collect my Tesla next week. I went to Crawley and drove the 3 performance and the Y long range. The Y is definitely the more practical car but for once I had a heart over head moment and went for the performance as it just made me laugh. So, Tuesday I get my new daily. It’ll be interesting running it along side my cayman 981 as they are opposite ends of the spectrum. I’ll report back! If you ever want a 3 performance for a review, or a 981 for that matter, just shout 👍

Thoroughly enjoyed that. The whole one take thing brought an interesting dimension to it.
You could make a series of them called POT's (Ped's One-Takes)
Well done for not faffing with the door handles, everyone struggles with mine even after 9 months of ownership!
A Tesla is probably the best first EV, they alleviate all charging and range fears so well with the network and efficiency. In my Model 3 Performance I'm regularly over 4mi/kwh. Recently did a 250 mile trip from Yorkshire back to Gloucestershire non stop with at least 40mi left on the range.
It's true you don't need the Performance versions, but the big child in me is SO happy I did. You never bore of it and your passengers never expect it!
Tesla's are not perfect, but they are mighty impressive and brilliant EVs.

@@PetrolPed on that trip back from Yorkshire it was 4.1/4.2 and that was in 12deg with constant showers.
I don't want to sound like a fanboy, I did have an Ioniq5 on order before I bought the Tesla, but when you can stick with Taycan Turbo/S upto license loosing speeds and get twice the efficiency you have to be impressed by them.
Just wish they looked more interesting!

Great video Pete. I love my model 3 but the practicality of a Y is very tempting as I have a dog that's 26Kg, so much bigger than your 2. However he sits on the back seat without issue so comes with us to France, Scotland, Cornwall etc. Have to say the Tesla experience is the best car ownership I've had in 40 years of driving. People say it's a go-kart with an iPad, but in fact it's a very sophisticated car with a huge number of features and a fantastic safety rating. I've had some small issues which were sorted without fuss, but then my friend with a Jaguar iPace had some major issues and my friend with a VW ID3 has got fed up with multiple problems (all finally sorted after about 6 visits to the dealership). If Tesla softened the suspension on the Model Y it would be world beater - but then I suspect it already is!

    • @David-bl1bt

Enjoyed the review (I have a Model 3). I know it's only 20 minutes and you can't capture everything, however the 1 pedal driving (don't lift your foot fully off the accelerator, the more you lift the more regen).
Also a main feature you didn't touch on is the voice commands, you don't need buttons if you just tell the car what you want.
Also (which most period on your channel will appreciate as they're car lovers) is sentry mode, surveillance when your car is parked and also footage of any accident (especially when companies just agree 50/50 if there's any doubt) footage giving clear fault 👍

Nice concept, well executed. Good job.
I would comment that the Model 3 is fine with a dog if you are 3 people or fewer - we have a Labrador and she just has a bed on the back seat and we clip her to the seatbelt. Dog mode might seem frivolous to many, but it is genuinely transformative. I will not buy a car without it now.
I made exactly the same choice as Andrew when we bought the 3: I tested the Performance, thought it was unnecessary and ordered the LR. And i drive it mostly in chill mode also, cos that really is quick enough and a lot more comfortable for the passengers. Andrew is exactly spot-on about how easy they are to own - we drove from central Norway to the UK (and back) this summer, and it was the easier than driving round with an ICE cos the car planned everything.

    • @David-bl1bt
      @David-bl1bt Год назад +1

I have a 3, and a large 13 yr old 45kg dog who is arthritic, so can't jump onto the back seat.
I solved the problem by removing the rear seat base, made a supporting frame with a panel covered in camper van lining material on top of it. His memory foam bed goes on top of the platform for long journeys. He is tethered to the isofix point behind the centre headrest.
He has plenty of room there, so can effortlessly turn around, sit up or lie down, and bathedxwith cool air from the rear vents,he loves it!
To get him into the rear I made a ramp, angled to match the door when open, that slots onto the platform, making it easy for him to get in and out.
We recently took him on a 3800 mile return trip to the costa del sol (from the UK) in comfort.
Yes, living with the Tesla is super easy and stress free,
You are right about the the dog mode, it was a boon on our trip with external temperatures approaching 45 degrees. Like you say, I wouldn't buy a car now that doesn't have it.
These small things make a huge difference to the ownership experience.

Peter, I think the Model X party dance mode is so much better, esp. with the falcon doors going. I got used to the 1pedal after the first 15 mins. Apart from the build quality, only real gripe was the sun visors. As my last boss had 3 kids I thought choosing the white interior was a big mistake (proven after 18 mths 😁) as his first one had a tan interior.

I’ve had a model 3 long range for 16 months now and overall like it, but the family hate the choppy ride and it’s on 18’s, I’ve heard the Y is worse, I’d have to test drive one before changing. Our mazda6 tourer on 19’s is far smoother. The performance is great as is the cost or running and the build quality seems very good no dodgy panel gaps (mine was one of the first Chinese built ones in the uk. Just try before you buy and make sure you don’t mind the bobbly ride

Have a 2023 Y, done over 8K. It's only the RWD, but even then it's still plenty fast.
With Intelligent Octopus too, 7.5p , but also have solar, and the car has been handy for dumping access solar on sunny days.
Superchargers are fanatic, been to London & Scotland, no issues. Not only that, there priced rather good, not as good as home charging, about 30p, but compared to other charging networks that's really cheap. Actually coming back from London the other day it was free, some special anniversary event was on, so all superchargers were free for the day.
Tech is great, although Spotify is built in, I would love for Tesla to include RUclips Music, of course I can just Bluetooth from phone, but it been in-built would just be a little bit nicer. I think with that CarPlay wouldn't be giving me much extra, as the Navigation is great, and the other apps like uTube etc work well.
Yes drive does seem a little harsh on potholes etc, but saying that travelling to London / Scotland, felt very relaxing. My wife in previous car (Mercedes A250) going to Scotland would struggle with numb bum, etc. and arriving at destination everybody felt fresh. Handling, again for such a big car I was very pleasantly surprised here, especially as I came from a M250.
The Tesla reminds me of Apple with the original iPhone, it was way ahead of other manufactures. This seems to be the case here too, but cars instead. Basically other Car manufactures really need to get together and sort out the charging network, it's currently a joke, they need to invest, and not rely on BP & none car manufactures to get this sorted, they don't care if the experience is sub-optimal.
As you pointed out in video, there is Pet mode, there is also Camp mode, Valet mode, there is even a bio defence mode, if say you ever got caught in a bush fire maybe.
The App is also great, the App that came with the Mercedes was just pointless, were with the Tesla, use it all the time. Eg. pre-cooling the car on hot days, or unlocking the car for our son to get in after gym, were I might still be shopping, he can then watch uTube etc while he wait, etc.
As you saw the boot is very practical, and large. The frunk is actually pretty handy too.
So am I happy with said car, yes. In fact to the point were if I did get another car it's likely going to be a Tesla again, I would just feel I was missing out / compromising on so many things otherwise.

In terms of the build quality - yes I get what you’re saying. Room to improve still. However, what (most) people don’t understand is that these are well founded criticisms of the (California built) 2017 Model 3. Tesla had some very difficult growing pains to overcome when trying to achieve mass scale; but overcome them they did indeed. In terms of technology and pace of innovation, they can’t be touched by the “Big Boy” OEM’s. That flawless ownership experience you talk about, that’s because of their vertical integration. They are world class at hardware manufacturing and software. How many companies can you say that of? Only other is Apple that springs to my mind.
If you buy a Model 3 or Model Y LR today in the UK, they’re coming China (as I write this today) and if you buy a performance Y it’s coming from Germany. The quality compared to that 2017 MY has come on leaps and bounds. Why? They have continued to delete parts and processes. Check out what they have done with the “Giga Casting,” “Super Bottle” and more recently, “Octovalve.” If you can understand that, then you can really start getting under the skin of the company and get a read of its DNA. Tesla makes up to 30 changes per week to their cars whilst the best of the rest do maybe half a dozen every 2-5 years depending on the company. Check out Joe Justice on RUclips if you want to understand this more.
    10 TESLA FUN FACTS:
    1. It takes VW 3 times longer to make the ID.4 than it does for Tesla to make the MY
    2. Each car Tesla makes is 6 times more profitable than a car BMW makes
    3. Tesla overtook both Ford and GM this year in terms of profitability even though it makes less cars
    4. At current rate of growth, Tesla will overtake GM in 2023 for total cars produced and Ford by 2024
    5. At current rate of Growth Tesla will overtake Apple as the worlds most valuable company by 2025
    6. Out of the 10 largest companies by Market Capitalisation, Tesla has grown your quickest/most over the last 10 years with a 70%+ Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR).

I have always said that if you forced me to drive an EV, it would have to be a Tesla. Except that I wouldn’t choose to. The Model Y ride, the build quality and the looks are my own personal barriers. But I get why it’s nails it for so many others!

I think the ride is awful, the build quality questionable at best, the sound system poor and to top it off it looks awful. While I'm not a EV fan anyway I can see why people buy them, but if we're eventually forced to have them I won't be looking at Tesla,. Regardless of the advantages you expect a manufacturer to get the basics right and it's not as though they haven't had the time to do it now.
But the thing that concerns me most that is creeping in to car ownership is this subscription scheme, like the advanced autopilot which I believe is about 3 grand a year. I've seen other options on cars that are deleted unless you pay a subscription for them, like keyless entry. How long is it going to be before we're expected to pay a monthly fee for a whole list of extras like climate control, heated seats, cruise control and so on? And call me an old bore but that light show is just stupid.

      @neilturner6749 Год назад

Surely you can’t be serious about calling any Tesla a “premium” car? Yes, they’re fairly expensive but the build quality in terms of materials, fit and finish and attention to detail regarding driving dynamics is not even on a level with Peugeot or Skoda. And the nail in the coffin is that frankly the Y and 3 are as ugly as f*** !

    • @kiae-nirodiariesencore4270
      @kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 Год назад +2

@@neilturner6749 There are three parts to your argument.
      1) Build quality. Early Teslas like the Model S and X outsold the German premium brand equivalents even though the built quality was inferior. A friend o mine in Norway has a 2015 Model S which is as big as a BMW 7 or Merc S class but he admits is in no way comparable in quality to them. However, his car has been 100% reliable and with its dual motor outperforms both of the Germans and is of course much cheaper to run. Since then Tesla have improved their quality in leaps and bounds. I live in France and got chatting to a guy who had a MIC model 3, fit and finish were impeccable, unlike the owner of a Fremont built M3 I met in the UK who loved his car, said it had been totally reliable but he showed me the panel gaps and general poor fit and finish. Bear in mind that every Tesla model is the safest car ever tested in its class by authorities in the USA and Europe. The new giga-castings and structural packs will take them onto a another level in build accuracy and quality. Tesla interiors are minimalist and they will never use animal skins on their seats or other surfaces. If your definition of quality is leather with lots of buttons and switches that’s up to you...I’m an old retired guy and have owned BMWs, Volvos etc too in my working life, so I appreciate that definition of ‘quality' but times are changing and younger buyers are increasingly turning away from these definitions. For me if it burns fossil fuels it can never be as smooth and responsive as a car with an electric motor, which is one definition of premium.
      2) Driving dynamics. Here you are out on a limb my friend! Every review I’ve ever read in English and French testing the Tesla M3 against the BMW 3 series shows it at least equals and often beats the BMW for ride and handling dynamics. The BMW has been a benchmark in this regard for years but make no mistake, the Tesla not only out performs the BMW in a straight line (something easily done we know in an EV) but can beat it on the twisty stuff as well. The popularity of the M3 is reflected in the sales figures as the Tesla has taken chunks out of 3 Series, Audi A4 and Merc C class sales. It outsold the BMW 3 series in Europe last year, enough said.
      3) Looks: This is purely subjective, you find them ugly, millions don’t as witnessed by the long waiting lists for the cars.. I am unlikely ever to buy one unless Tesla come out with a smaller hatchback/crossover style car with a tailgate but I think they look just fine, the design makes sense when you don’t have to worry about big lumps of engine, exhausts or fuel tanks. Personally I like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 design better but this is a all a matter of taste.

Another great vid Pedro. Just a word to the wise about the Octopus tariff. The downside to the overnight cheap rate, is the higher day rate. I worked out a comparison for charging my yet to be delivered BMW i4, on our current tariff vs the EV tariff. The thing is, most of our energy usage is electric, so most of our usage would occur on the high day rate, and only charging would happen at night. So if we swapped to the EV rate, our bills would actually increase. Worth doing the sums before swapping. On our current tariff, charging the i4 would cost around £21 for 80kWh.
