Great review. I rented a Model 3 for a weekend and was totally blown away. I agree with you so much. I have driven M3 LR for the past 12 month with complete satisfaction. Easily the best car in my 30 yr driving life. Soooo easy to drive with or without Autopilot.
Good review, I have owned a Tesla Model Y for 7 months and it’s the only car I have owned that always puts a smile on my face. Incredibly cheap to run (£470 for 8000 miles). I thought the lack of display in front would be an issue but it really hasn’t bothered me. Yes there are a few niggles (auto wipers being the main one) but a fantastic car to drive and standard autopilot is a joy.

Got 2023 MY Long Range 7 seaters . It’s a joy to drive. For long distant driving the basic autopilot takes the dreary out of driving. In stop and go freeway traffic autopilot removes you from having to constantly pressing on the gas and brakes every other seconds. You just sit back and relax in traffic listening to the great sound system. When traffic opens up the instant torque propels you like a rocket.

We tried a Model 3, didn't like it at all. Tried an Ioniq 5, liked an EV6 but delivery dates were ridiculous. Some months later tried a Model Y and loved it. Placed an order next day. We've had it since last November and after a "trial" trip to Cornwall for a long trip which was without issue, decided on something more adventurous. Currently touring Switzerland and absolutely loving it! Superchargers on the way down through France, two charges to get to our first AirBnb. Roads are so much better than the UK, autopilot is far more reliable. Supercharger network is the killer feature and that's what we figured. When all was considered, we wanted a car that was practical for space, 4 adults minimum plus luggage. Software that would be kept up to date and something that could be used as a car in every respect and for that the supercharger network was our final decision point. The effortless way that we've done this trip has been fabulous and I wouldn't have felt anywhere near as enthusiastic about the distance travelled in any of our ICE cars. Touring in the Model Y is just a delight and ascending the Swiss mountain roads with power on tap is just fun and today, a 29km segment at 370% efficiency using 1% battery as it was coming down a mountain brought a smile :) Loving the Model Y. Sad day when we do the return journey to broken Britain as this has just been too much fun.
I’ve got a 2021 MYLR and it’s the best car I’ve ever had. Love everything about it except for the occasional phantom braking while in autopilot. It sure seems like they should have been able to resolve this issue by now. And while it’s really annoying when it happens, I worry more about getting rear ended by someone following too closely. That’s my only gripe.
Our old Toyota Yaris 2003 had a centre mounted binnacle with the gauges and nothing in front of the driver and when we bought the later version years later which had the binnacle in front of the driver, we hated it. That binnacle reduced so much more forward vision.
Thanks for the comment Roger. I did talk about the efficiency and range in some detail, so kind of assume at this point if people are buying an EV they will know that it's going to be kinder for the planet than an internal combustion engine car.
Love my Y but as you say its not without its niggles, the automatic wipers are simply the worse on any car I've owned and lack (yet) of the matrix headlights being activated yet, cant wait for that. Love it, so much power and torque and the AWD grip is insane for such a big and heavy car, and yes its bigger in person than you think!
Wife and I took one for a demo drive a couple weeks ago and we noticed the same thing about the speedo, didn't take as much effort to get used to as we thought it would. We're ordering a performance in a few months. (blame my desire to have a faster car than my brother's SL550)
Interesting to hear about Polestar 2. I have one but will give it up for a Model Y LR that I am picking up now on Thursday. I think I made the right choice (although the Polestar 2 has a better design)
Certainly if space is important to you then then it's a no brainer - get the Y. The Polestar is a better looking car in my opinion, but the Y is better to drive. Hope you like it!
You better have the Cybertruck as your first tesla, would bring viewers, content, practicality, Off-Road, Rear wheels steering, Stainless Steel body in the rainy Great Britain (meaning you can test the reliability and weaknesses of the vehicle, maybe the body doesn't rust, but other components might... etc.)
Haha yeah I think my channel would get a boost from the Cyber Truck. Unfortunately, my channel isn't quite big enough yet for Elon to give me one of those!
I gave my windscreen a good clean and now run winter strength screenwash. Wipers have not missed a beat in five months since. Ditto auto headlights which are now faultless.
Thanks for the reviews. Aug 2023 - I just got my 2023 model Y long range and is a great hatchback vehicle to drive. I wanted the dual motor AWD, the Sentry/Dashcam security cameras, the large front and rear storage, good full sunroof, single pedal regen braking driving, and many other features. My vehicle came with HW4 and the newer cameras. i am retired and just do around town or short trips. I do all my charging at home. Yes, it has good acceleration and can be made even faster with the Accel Boost software option to buy. With that you could do 4.2 sec in 0 to 60 mph. I did not get EAP or FSD driving modes. Basic Auto Pilot/Cruise control is adequate for me. Thanks again and take care.
@@car_babble I agree, it is amazing what these Tesla vehicles can do. I think the boost only is provided with the LR vehicles. The Model 3 LR gets down into the 3.7 sec range of Accel. because the car is lighter. Take care.
Thanks for the entertaining yet to the point review, only watching as Autotrader are giving away a model Y this month and it whet my appetite 😀. Also great to watch a UK review!!
The speedo in a cockpit display isn't in your eyeline either. They are both in your peripheral vision so it's an eye flick either way. That's why you got used to it so fast, it's only habit getting in your way.
Great video again and an excellent 2 part review. Hoping to be able to get myself into a Model Y in the not to distant future. The auto wipers on my BMW 3 series aren’t great so hoping that the Tesla ones wont be too much of an issue for me.
Disappointed you did not mention dog mode, hold or camping mode. I live in Florida and in my ICE car for 4 months of the year I could not go to the beach or grocery shopping etc. during the day because I like my dog to go everywhere with me. Too hot. All of a sudden I can go to the beach, groceries at noon etc. I have a refrigerator/freezer so I can buy my frozen food, leave my pup in the car and go to a sit down meal. And sooo much more. I would not go back to an ICE car if petrol was free.
I'm sure there will be other things I didn't mention but tried my best to cover as much info as possible. Thanks for the comment - dog mode is indeed a stroke of genius.
So thanks for the video, and the ride along. It’s too bad that you guys don’t have FSD yet, hopefully you’ll get it soon, because it has become, really, really, good, and I personally think and believe that it’s not going to be that much longer before FSD proves to be the value that no one except, the people at Tesla, and those like me, who appreciates this feature, and the value it’s going to unlock for this company is going to be tremendous. I bought in at US$3000, and now if you want FSD it will cost you US$15,000, and what’s the likelihood that it’s going to go lower? Yeah it’s not likely going to go lower, and when folks really get a chance to appreciate the value of FSD, there is absolutely no going back to conventional driving. So I could care less about driving a car, and when I can get in my car and let it do all the driving, it will be absolutely godsend, and so I simply can’t wait until FSD does all the driving, because that’s exactly the way I drive it now. I let FSD do all the driving, until I have to intervene . So again thanks for the video and the ride along, and hope you have much success with your Tesla Model Y.
Thanks so much Theodore. Yeah the problem with FSD in the UK is our road systems are very different to yours (presume you're Stateside) and I think that is part of the issue. I struggle to see full FSD working on some of the country roads we have.
Well done on the review. Unfortunately, you seem to have to make compromises with most EV's e.g. the looks of the MY are polarising, but you balance this against their excellent charging network. Enjoyed your review on the EQC as well! I am considering both as my next company car and the contributions are nigh on identical so negating the list price jump to the Merc. If both were identical in cost, which one would you pick? Less range on Merc and slower charging but much smoother, (arguably) luxurious and a bit more premium feeling.
Hi Andrew thanks for the feedback! I think overall the value proposition of the Model Y is leagues ahead of the EQC. The latter is lovely but it's way way more expensive and still less practical, less range and way less standard kit. The EQC is more unique on the road though.
@@car_babble Appreciate the response. I didn't expect the Merc to have a PUC the same as the significantly "cheaper" Model Y, that's why I was curious on your thoughts having driven both recently. I'm used to my Germans and their build quality, just focusing a bit too much on the negatives of the Y rather than the benefits and struggling to get over them at the mo.
Hi Mark, as per my review, I found the ride firm on the 20in wheels, but not too firm, so if you go for the 19s, I think you'll not find it too bad. Certainly a Skoda with 19's will probably be about the same.
If you drive it normally and not with a lead foot, average country, town and motorway you’ll get more than 300 miles easily! Only town driving you’ll get closer to 400! 19” wheels are more efficient.
What’s wrong with the build quality? It’s every bit as good as any German and/or other car I’ve had. Seems like the car reviewer’s checklist for Tesla is 1) Panel gaps 2) Build quality 3) Firm ride none of which, in reality, are remotely a problem.
I might need to rewatch this video to recall but pretty sure I didn't say the build quality was not that bad, but earlier Tesla's most certainly lagged a lot behind the Germans. I also think you'll find panel gaps is a pretty good barometer of build quality. Funny, though, in the many comments I've had on this video, I don't think one person has disagreed with the point that the ride is firm, but I also didn't say it wasn't "overly firm" and clearly not a big problem!
@@car_babble To be fair, your review was probably amongst the most balanced I’ve seen but at the same time it’s like every single review ticks the same generic talking point points, no matter how justified or not they are. I’m not saying this about your video particularly, but there is a hint of the clickbait about it and it’s just a bit tedious. Tesla? Crap build quality. Elon Musk. Firm ride blah blah blah. Although early build quality on US built cars likely was questionable (but remember this is an entirely NEW car company that has come out of nowhere and changed the game entirely), the panel gaps on my ‘24 car are absolutely no different to any BMW or Mercedes I’ve owned. The interior is every bit as good quality too, in many instances I’d say it’s better. You very rarely hear mention of the array of features you get in this car as standard. To get the same feature set in a BMW you’d be paying for £1000’s in options. The infotainment system in a BMW is total arse by comparison. Fiddly & cumbersome with too many buttons, menu’s and options. Yours was one of the better reviews I’ve seen & I’ve subscribed off the back of that, I was just surprised to hear you criticise build quality. Whilst it was undoubtedly below par at the start, using my car as a barometer there is absolutely nothing wrong with it now.
A software update has since arrived, so one can deactivate auto high beams. Got my MY AWD 2 weeks ago. Sadly it's a Shanghai one, as the Berlin ones should have seats with better thigh support/bolster. And the wipers going, when it's dry... 😱 I have the S3XY buttons and a phone mount behind the wheel, so I can have Waze, ABRP and other things on there.
Tesla Superchargers are cheaper than public chargers that charge at similar speed, typically Supercharger is 44p verses 74p for Ionity or Gridserve 69p per kWh.
Do you mean when the car is on Autopilot and 'thinks' it has seen a hazard ahead so slams on the brakes? I think it's something that a lot of cars with some level of self driving can sometimes do, but the owner of this car said it hasn't happened a lot, but it can take you by surprise when it happens. Most of the time it's looking so far ahead that even when it gets it wrong the braking, for the first split second, isn't 'that' hard so you have time to react and take over, which will then cancel the car's input, before the car really brakes its hardest. Also, Tesla have built in a function where you can report it via the screen, so allegedly it would be logged and looked into, using data from the car. The owner of the car thinks it's improved a bit over the time he's had the car too, although again hard to say as it doesn't happen a lot. Hope that helps...
@@barr96but what Tesla lead in is efficiency, battery technology, software and charging infrastructure , the Nio can't touch it on any of those and battery swaps just add complexity and expense into the equation .
As your model being a dual motor, can you drive in a single motor or dual motor selectable? What is the difference in acceleration, response, speed, battery?
I think only if one motor fails can a dual motor drive single motor. I've not had a go of a single motor yet but my mate has one and there is a fair difference in acceleration of at least 2 seconds 0-60.
Can anyone advise please...... TESLA Hmmmmmm!!!!! I took ownership of a brand new AWD Model Y on the 23rd of January 2024, and in a little over 2 weeks I have done 560 miles. I don't have a charger at home so I charge at Tesla superchargers at 40p a KW. I go before I start work at 5am when it is the cheapest rate. I did do just over 100 miles of charge at the local shell garge which cost me £26.81 the other 4 superchargers cost me a total of £80.40 thats a whopping £107.21 in 17 days. Does anyone think this is correct or do they think I have an issue with my battery. To be honest the first few day I did put my foot down and have the heating on, some mornng I don't have the heating on at all. I have a 2013 BMW M Sport Diesel and costs me just over £80 to fill it and I would get around 600 miles to a tank of diesel. I regret getting a Tesla now.....
I think you have your cameras in mirror mode. You were sitting on the wrong side of the car and driving on the wrong side of the street. Seems like Europeans always make that mistake. 🤔
PASS - insurance cost 240$ a month for us in a model y, can't call Tesla, fit and finish poor, can't ever enter the car at times, wheels get road rash just by looking at them, tires are a joke look at the tread at the face! ,,,prices are not stable at retail, fire all the top management - and no stock options! please am I wrong.......... I want a refund
Sounds like you had a bad experience, maybe one of the earlier ones that were badly built? Insurance is now expensive but Vs other cost savings I don't think relevant for me. I wouldn't want to own one as I'd worry about depreciation so PCP was a good shout for me.
Teslas were great but now very poor cars despite improvement in build quality. The windscreen wipers don’t work properly because there is no sensor. Ditto auto dimming lights. Tesla vision is a disaster and is so terrible, Tesla have withdrawn auto park as a feature. No birds eye camera, and no USS meaning parking is a nightmare with blind spots everywhere. Phantom braking. Auto lane changes abandoned part way through. Rattles and creaks everywhere. And for his latest trick, Musk has removed indicator stalks. That’s just dangerous in the UK with all of our roundabouts. Everything with Tesla is constantly in Beta and being fixed. As for the exterior looks, worse than ugly. Ugly would imply some styling attempt. All Tesla’s are bland and non-descript. I don’t need the admittedly impressive space the MY offers so going for the new Volvo EX30 probably which Carwow reckons is a better car.
Thanks for the comment. Certainly, older Model Y's seem to get a lot of stick for this and I did mention the paint wasn't good, but I think Tesla are getting better in this area.
Plenty of professionals disagree! Lutz, Munro, Out of Spec. detailers, Symons and the majority of car buyers, given a Tesla is the best selling car in the world with best owner satisfaction, retention and conversion ratios...

Thanks for the comment... Incredible that you can get an acceleration boost from a software update!
Thanks James! Yeah I'm seriously tempted by a Tesla for my next car too!
The speedo in a cockpit display isn't in your eyeline either. They are both in your peripheral vision so it's an eye flick either way. That's why you got used to it so fast, it's only habit getting in your way.
I think you are probably right. It's a case of adjusting your eyes, but it is still something I think will put some people off.
@@car_babble Judging by their YOY growth, not enough to matter. People adapt really quickly, just as you did.
No service schedule to keep up warranty!! Fantastic. Safest cars on the roads and best selling car worldwide!
Yes great review just purchased a y awd for my wife she is very much excited about it….
Thanks very much. I hope you enjoy your car 😎
I can’t remember if you said in part 1 or 2 but I am getting a new Model Y and am picking it up from Aberdeen.
Also, excellent pair of vids 👍
Cheers Kevin! Hope you enjoy your new toy...
Great video again and an excellent 2 part review. Hoping to be able to get myself into a Model Y in the not to distant future. The auto wipers on my BMW 3 series aren’t great so hoping that the Tesla ones wont be too much of an issue for me.
Thanks Richard! Would love to hear how you get on when you get into one...
I have a AWD Long Range on order. So I think they're great!
Would love to hear your thoughts once you get it!
Excellent second part to the review - really gets across how the performance and handling is
Thanks a lot Nick! I'm just stunned at how good the steering is. Just totally finishes off the experience for me!
Haha love your review buddy!
Thanks Chad!
I struggle to see full FSD working on some of the country roads we have.
nice work mate
Thanks buddy
Thinking of changing my skoda superb sportsline diesel for a model Y but a lot of reviews keep saying that the "ride quality is really harsh"- views?
Hi Mark, as per my review, I found the ride firm on the 20in wheels, but not too firm, so if you go for the 19s, I think you'll not find it too bad. Certainly a Skoda with 19's will probably be about the same.
@@car_babble Much appreciated- keep up the reviews- your very easy to listen too and the videos are well edited
Live down a gravel track, MY 2021 uncomfortable. SO WHAT?!!!!!!
Good one 😊
Thanks Kevin!
If you drive it normally and not with a lead foot, average country, town and motorway you’ll get more than 300 miles easily! Only town driving you’ll get closer to 400! 19” wheels are more efficient.
Thanks for the feedback!
Then there’s the amazing lower costs snd always working and increasing Supercharger network!
Not "one of the safest brands" but THE safest brand full stop. ;-)
Thanks for the comment although from what I've read, technically for 2023 they are 3rd safest.
@@car_babble Who's first/2nd? No doubt you are more on top of it than I. Thanks for vid you do good work.
@@Mrbfgray Thank you! Depends which source but some say Genesis, some say Volvo or even Mazda are ahead but Tesla is certainly up there!
Interesting comments - thank you. Just a shame they still can't get something as basic as auto high beam to work.
Tesla Superchargers are cheaper than public chargers that charge at similar speed, typically Supercharger is 44p verses 74p for Ionity or Gridserve 69p per kWh.
Thanks for the info!
Loving the accent!
Haha thanks. Where are you from?
@@car_babble South Africa, but currently living in Czechia
What's the latest with phantom braking? is that still a thing? for me a showstopper but not sure if Tesla has this resolved now with SW update ?
Keep your foot over accelerator. Not a huge deal. Been using it for 7 years now.
Tahat great motor and amazing
It really is!
Tesla is a real deal
Ahead of the game...
❤
Thanks!
Why did you go for the 3 over the Y
Much lower price, didn't need the extra space and the looks I prefer.
We are looking now ! Have bmw x3 . Wife wants a Y !! 35k for a low mileage used . Same model 3 is 10k cheaper ! She'll have a 3 and like it
Ill wait for the NIO ET5
Checked it out. Looks interesting but reviews are questionable
@Car Babble no car is perfect. Just look at the model 3 and Y.
@@barr96but what Tesla lead in is efficiency, battery technology, software and charging infrastructure , the Nio can't touch it on any of those and battery swaps just add complexity and expense into the equation .
@@davefitzpatrick4841 tesla, cheap materials, poor build quality, excellent software.
@@barr96 build quality has improved, if you have a Chinese or Berlin build Tesla they are now on par with legacy automakers.
Super
Thank you!!!
Surely fae Mintla.
Haha no Aberdeen but I shot this video up in Maud
Have you joined a Tesla forum on Facebook? Recommend this to ask other owners these sorts of questions.
I think you have your cameras in mirror mode. You were sitting on the wrong side of the car and driving on the wrong side of the street. Seems like Europeans always make that mistake. 🤔
Most of Europe drives on the same side of the road as America. It's just Britain and a few other countries that bucked the trend!
🤡💩🙈Troll on, brother. And road rash is driver error, which I'm guessing you're prone to.
Thanks for your comments! 😊 I like the look of the EX30 as well. Ridiculously fast for a Volvo but very small in the back.
Instead of cutting and pasting trollshit, you might try actually driving one.
Build quality and paint are absolute trash. Much better options available.
🤡💩😂🙈
