    If only the tax was used to maintain the roads it would be well worth it, however it just goes into the general tax pot.

      My earliest political memory, and I'm old as heck, is being a young kid watching a grainy black and white TV with some talk show, where a politician said exactly that. He waved his hand and said "Everybody know the road tax is not only for the roads, of course." and the audience booed, because apparently they didn't know that, no. So no, it's not a new thing.

    With reference to your comment...a classic v8 sports car has already paid 40 years of tax, normally only does a few hundred miles a year and the majority of emissions are from the manufacture of a car.

      Its also very rare to see a que of classic v8s on the sliproad as they generally do very low mileage. My classic mini (not v8😂😂) has done less than 50 miles this year, and zero last year. As a side bonus, it also returns around 40mpg, somewhat better than my modern ecoboost gas guzzler. Eco boost😂😂😂 not much boost and definitely no eco.....
      Co2 is emissions are a blatant scam, but whilst its a measure, co2 emissions are largely down to mpg, so whilst old classics are relatively dirty, they fair quite well on co2 emissions and more importantly, efficiency as they are not generally massively overweight like modern cars. Heavy weight = poor efficiency. V8s probably don't fit this statement, but they sound great, so who cares😂😂😂

      @@michaeloleary4071 pollutant wise classic cars should be taxed @ 30 and 50 sovs unless and no ved if never go on public roads.
      Eva’s with power left on that you can sit your loved ones behind all day ( try that with a ice engine and they will need medical assistance) without a worry should pay a fixed fee of 50 sovs only. Only fair.

      That’s a good point, but the new scheme does still factor in emissions for pre-2017 combustion vehicles, so it is very inconsistent.

      To be properly fair, it should also be based on the miles you drive eh? That would mean the 60k a year / 8 hours a day non stop 800 miles on a tank diesel jockeys would pay their fair share.

      It's not actually "road" tax. "Road Tax" was abolished many decades ago in the UK. It's "Vehicle Excise Duty". It doesn't even pay for roads (it wouldn't be nearly enough to cover the bill) AFAIK roads are funded from general taxation, of which Vehicle excise duty is a part. So effectively everyone pays for the roads.

      @@ouethojlkjn no. it should be based on the weight of your vehicle. Not the milage. We don't want to share any more information by law than we already do. We pay probably the most tax in the UK and have some of the worst maintained roads. We have the most cameras in London probably compared to any other city in the world, and yet we have the most crime. It's not a taxation issue. It's a corruption issue. £120 billion on HS2 and here we are a decade later. Where is it? Restricted housing supply via planning permission and inflated costs, resulting in an artificially inflated housing market. Import duty (everything in the uk is imported). Insane taxes on businesses, energy, import, legal requirements... All of these costs are passed on to the citizens. Any tax on business is a tax on citizens. Road tax, insurance (mandated by law) where the insurance companies are taxed on profit. Insurance goes up, government income goes up. Win win. Citizens lose again. Most items that we buy are 4x the cost that they are elsewhere. We're essentially paying 80% tax if not more. Its crazy. Regarding the milage, you already are paying tax per mile. Most of the fuel cost is tax.

      @@ZeerakImran I can't disagree with most of that. I can't offer any solutions either I am afraid. With regard to weight, it's half the story - weight x distance = road damage. Though incenting manufacturers to make smaller and lighter cars (because that's what would happen like in Japan) would not be a bad thing. I recall in Japan you can ride any motorbike you like as long as you can pick it up off the ground. So most bikers were also body builders. That's one way to leverage weight to transportation I guess.

    Classic bait & switch tactics by the Government, they did it with Diesels for over a decade, EVs will be the next cash cow knowing people have little choice going forwards as they phase out ICE vehicles in the next 10 years.

    You’re missing the point. It’s not about encouraging people to go EV it’s about making it unviable to own your own car and keeping you in your 15 minute city on foot or cycling about. It’s curtailing your freedom to travel.

      If anything, oil dependency already limits our freedom of travel more than electric cars ever could. 70's oil crisis anyone? We're stuck relying on fluctuating gas prices, geopolitical instability, and the environmental cost. If freedom of movement is what you're after, you might as well get a horse. And about 15-minute cities: I live in one, and they don’t prevent me from owning or using a car. They just give more options to walk or cycle when it’s convenient. It's the car-centric model that's forcing people to be tied down to their vehicles in the first place. My aunt for example barely scrapes by with her pay yet she's forced to own a car to get to work because there's no cycling paths or public transit available to her. So on top of her needs she needs to maintain a beater.

    People who charge at home pay 5% VAT, and that is subsidised by people using electricity for cooking and heating... ICE drivers pay 65% tax+VAT on every litre..

      @@djtaylorutube The people who use electricity for domestic or business use basically have been paying for the system to be set up and maintained, and the amount they use far outweighs the stuff used for EV and enables economies of scale, it electricity was only used for EV the system costs would mean that electrical power would be £5 per KWh.

The infrastructure costs are socialised and paid for out of bills and that's all there is to it. EV owners are also those same people so by the same token, I and the other million or so have also already paid for this and continue to do so in our bills.

      @@djtaylorutube Why then is there 'red' diesel at very low cost for farmers etc, and normal diesel for road vehicles, which attracts tax and duty. Fuels for 'road use' attract more duty and tax. EV drivers are using domestic electricity at low tax, for road transport use.

      @@chrissmith2114 That's a tax issue and also changed in 2022 to change which vehicles can continue to use rebated fuel.
      EV's use electricity, where it comes from is varied. It could come from 100% domestic solar, just as a homeowner can produce biodiesel and not pay duty on it.
      I'm not sure where you're finding the difference other than an apparent bitterness about tax? If you don't want to pay tax on fuel, get an EV. It will change over time no doubt but that's an option available to you. Not doing that is a choice and choices have consequences.

      Until April it was an emissions tax , EVs produce no emissions, hence why they were exempt.
      But yes they should have to pay towards the upkeep of the roads which anyone now and previously up to April paying working tax does ( that includes cyclists in full time work ) .

Emissions are irrelevant in road usage and EV’s should not be excluded from paying. The fairest method of road tax should be based on the new vehicle price, less expensive vehicles would pay less and those who can afford and use more expensive ones would pay more?

      And if you've seen my response EVs should pay road tax, I have no issue with it , but I do believe fossil fuel cars ( not commercial vehicles) should pay a higher rate as the emissions they produce do create health issues.
      I'm not a lefty tree hugger, EVs won't save the planet, but they will leave us with cleaner air .

    I currently run a small 13 year old diesel, my weekly commute is around 300 miles, most of which is motorway, I currently pay around £23 a week for diesel, I live in the centre of town, no access to off road parking, home charging isn't an option, public charging in the area where I live is, down to one charger in the most expensive car park that isn't 24 hours, there's around another 12 charge points set up but not connected to the grid, so charging plus parking is going to be more expensive than running my current car, I own a small car because I'm single, don't need anything too big, I only use it to get to and from work, and, living in the centre of town, I can park it just about anywhere, an electric vehicle that would manage 300 miles between charging, I'd be looking at a Tesla 3, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 size vehicle, twice the size, twice the weight, and much more than I could ever afford even on the used market, then there's the hidden costs, technical phones, credit cards, all cost, credit card companies aren't a charity, they need to make money to survive so there's their charges, add on the cost of a technical phone and whatever costs go with them, it all mounts up, being realistic, I'm a single working class person, electric vehicles are way out of my reach and I'm not prepared to start paying for things with a credit card, I've always paid with cash, I haven't got it, I don't spend it, until electric vehicles are more realistically priced, the infrastructure is improved and I can pay for electricity with cash, it's a no go for me, I'm older generation, I will probably be pushing up the daisies in the next few years, I think this is a big step in the wrong direction, I'm not knocking electric vehicles, I'm as much for them as I am for combustion vehicles, it's just that they're not priced accordingly for the working class people, if I didn't have to travel so far for work, I wouldn't own a vehicle

    Just to note a correction after someone noted in the comments, but VED no longer covers road maintenance. More recently, VED became more closely linked to vehicles’ environmental performance (to reflect wider negative externalities of car usage). That doesn't change the point of this video, but if emissions are more the focus, then it makes the Government's strategy even more open to scrutiny, in my opinion.

    My thoughts are that the 'car tax' should also have a multiplier for its weight. After all the tax should be going to keep the roads in good condition, not its emissions. Why this should ever had been a thing confuses me. Yes have a tax on the amount of emissions and then add for age, weight etc. But at the end of the day if everyone owned an EV then the tax would be thousands as the government of the day would make nothing from road users or the fuel they use..

      @@MarkWistow In 2023 33% of electricity generation was via fossil fuel, 100% of creating petrol and diesel has an environmental impact then add burning the stuff to make an ICE vehicle move of which about 30% burnt moves it and 70% wasted to heat generation, components moving etc. then oil needed to lubricate engine components. I worked for the Grid so know how our electricity is generated and fossil fuel dependency is reducing.

      Not very well thought out, and ignorant of facts too.
      Years ago whenEVs first became available there were grants from car makers to help sales, I bought a 2nd hand Leaf and received £1,000 grant from Nissan. 2 years later I got an email from the dealership offering to buy my car back, now 4 years old, at a price higher than I paid and less than marker price simply because they had no 2nd hand cars to sell, and as their job was selling cars they were desperate. I agreed, and with a bitn more bought another Leaf that was two years younger and with less on the clock. You appear to think government is there simply to hand you money, it's not, it's more the other way round.
      Idiots with paranoia who claim 'they' or 'the bastards; want to do this that and the other are usualy on benefits and couldn't buy a car if they wanted to. All this is fueled by jealousy. No one 'wants us out of cars' but with 8 billion humans destroying the planet, there is a need for fewer to make personal transport their first form of transport, traffic jams beiong the principal reason. 'They' are trying to keep society running, and sitting in traffic jams is not a profitable way of doing that. And there are roadside chargers, and more being installed all the time. IT TAKES TIME, and if more people had been capable of seeing the need for cvlean transport, the pressure to install far more would have forced the installations. So it's the morons who deride EVs for either being necessary or better all over have caused any slowness in roadside installations.

      Idiots or not, none of this is a secret. The term "you will be happy and own nothing" is not some sort of conspiracy theory, it is the mantra and policy of the powers to be that our new government openly worship and follow. Their policies are there for all of us to read and the surveillance cameras are there for us all to see. 1984 is no longer a work of fiction, it's a political manual.
      2030 is the target for a lot of the draconian and largely communist policies
      Car usei and ownership will be massivly reduced, and if it didn't come with massive levels of surveillance, I would believe that it was for my benefit and well being. I doubt many bilionaires will be party to any hardships inflicted on the rest of us

    To be clear, it’s not about using the roads or environmental impact. It’s just tax, that’s what it is, it has nothing to do with anything else.
    When it comes to tax breaks on EVs in the past? It was to encourage people to buy them.

    Me and my disabled mother brought an EV soul 67reg in 2020, it was more expansive than a diesel, but we where told they hold their value more than pet or diesel and it was meant to be cheap to run, how wrong that was !
    it's lost soo much money, the diesel version is worth more than mine!
    The infrastructure sucks it cost over twice as much to run the same distance as a diesel when not charging at home.
    Totally lied to about it's range, the battery prob wont last 100k !
    It will cost 3.5 times more than the car is worth so I will have to scrap it, I did try to trade it in for a diesel at a dealer, but he said they where not taking in EV because they can't get rid of them!
    The battery can't be recycled so much for the environment and as for ethics, some poor child in the Congo had to dig up the Colbot by had in a hell hole, with no PPE which will shorten his life to make that battery (I didn't no that when I brought it at the time) !
    my mother pass away in January I was her career. I'm on benefits now, so no spare money for car tax, I just played out for new tires EVs eat them, that not good for the environment either or the coal powered power station to charge it.

      Most of what you're saying is Wrong. Yes public charging is expensive your battery could last 400,000 like some are and there's no coal power stations in the UK the last one shut last week

      @@Andy-zi1wjbut the parts are especially if anything is made in china with is activating many coal power plants a week. Let alone the other ethical issues with ev have. Ev battery can get to 400k miles but there definitely will be degration and compared to a well looked after ice car with basic mantance will and can last over a million plus miles. And its far greener to run and keep you ice or ev car longer eg 5+ yrs. the shock coming down the tracks is loosing are last coal power plants is bad especially in the next 6 yrs we will lose 8 of are remaining 9 nuclear power plants with no new ones going on line, in short we lose are base load with is massively bad for a growing reliance on electricity sola or wind is rubbish for base load or emergency high loads. So we probably will have to import it from the continent at growing rates of price increase. Its a funny place to be going from cheap self supplied to being energy poor. But hay it keeps the eco warriors happy and sows people’s lives don’t really matter.

      @@Andy-zi1wj fact is sola and wind is ok when it blows and is sunny, but also for it work you need incredible amount of battery storage needed. Let alone every 20-25yrs you will need to replace it in full at great expense(who pays Us). And still won’t cover Base Load issues which if not covered it’s simple the grid will crash eg no electricity at peak times. Compared to new nuclear up to 100years of intal use and you just need to service the turbines and replace the core at an amazing efficiency plus grater amount of supply than the biggest of wind and solar farms can supply. Also uk coal is some of the cleanest coal in the world and coal power is a good backup and self reliant power source we had. Also with a mixture of power generation is safer for all and cheaper the production cheaper the electricity simples. But like with cars a mixture of power like fuel, hybrid, ev, and others is far better for all than all forced into one solution that doesn’t meet needs of the people and small businesses and tradesman and so on.
      The real so called greener solution is keep your cars longer, and service them correctly even evs need looking after, also power and citation we need to become self reliant like keeping are blast steel Furness and making things hear in the UK instead of relying on others. But sadly the boat has partly sailed and are future isn’t looking good.

      @@Andy-zi1wj😂🤪 I was talking about my car the Kia soul, some have failed as little as 40k my battery will not last 400,000 only one of my model is over 100k at 107k on Autotrader only 3 over 65k !
      Most EVs on Autotrader are under 100k , there are 20,270 of them , I04 are over that , 18 over 125k , only 2 over 200k one is 202k and the other is 291k !
      Yes that power station closed last week I've been driving this car 4 years plus, we still have gas power station with just a little teeny weeny last C02, the UK isn't the world!
      EV are not selling well and mostly bought as company fleet cars for the incentives, some Car manufacture companies are scaling back on EV production. In my experience with my EV I've had for (4 years) it been overwhelmingly a quadropoly Sh*t feast. 😂😂

    Totally agree. In the days when the green lobby were concerned about a hole in the ozone layer ( funny how we never hear about that now eh? ) Gordon Brown promoted low Co2 emitting cars by introducing to very low taxes - many cars were to pay just £20 or £30. As a result, people couldn't get enough of them. For all that's supposedly bad about diesel, the fact was the Co2 emissions from our cars was significantly reduced. Isn't that how government is supposed to work? Who in their right mind is going to change to an EV if there is no incentive? For users of older dirty cars, there was also scrappage. Where is the incentive for used cars buyer to swap their ICE for EV?
    I voted for change in the last election. I thought it was going to be change for the better, but the budget will prove this lot at just as stupid. 2030 will never happen. 2035 will never happen. I bet we'll still be selling new ICE in 2040.

    About time too. I'm embarrassed not to pay VED for my ev's. I mean they are as heavy as all the VW campers, pick ups, Range Rovers you see on the roads in ever increasing numbers, so why shouldn't I?

      I agree with you that we should contribute but the last time I looked the tax is not based on weight but emissions so if they made all cars irrespective of fuel type pay £190 then ok but why should a 10 year old fiesta pay £30 and me £190

    Car tax is just that. A tax for your audacity to own a car! Zero tax was used to coerce people into buying an ev. Now you will be paying just like everyone else. All car owners will be receiving an increase in the tax they pay. It's just an easy target for the government. The tax just goes into the pot of money the government receives. It's not solely used to for road repairs and building. If it was we should have excellent roads. They raise far more tax than they spend on the road network. The emissions scam is just that. You may not have tail pipe emissions but just research the damage done to the planet in the process of making your ev. Ice cars likewise.

    With the cost of an EV, rising electric prices, and road tax, they are no longer the attractive purchase they originally were. However saying that, I would never ever go back to a diesel or petrol, EV's are an absolute joy to drive.

    My 2019 Corsa cost 16K so to me 40K is a very expensive car. You could have 2 and 8K spare for 40K

    In case anyone missed it, the ECS of £410 per year is on top of the standard rate of tax for the particular vehicle. Also, if the list price of a new vehicle is, for arguments sake £40,001 for instance but, you get a discount from the dealer so you pay less than list price, you still have to pay the ECS for five years.

    You can get quite a nice EV for a list price of under 40K these days. I do agree that price particularly list price is a poor metric. Perhaps weight might be a better measure of the tax band we should be paying. And I do agree that some difference between ICE and EV should have been maintained to encourage the transition, even if quite small.

    I'm glad I kept my RR SVR! My sides are aching on this! Mileage Anxiety plus this - you can't beat it, can you? A big thanks to the Government who are trying to push all of these things through. A Clear war on the driver, just bringing the EV's now in on it also. Just for note: The Road Tax doesn't pay a penny towards road maintenance and improvement. As for kind on the environment: Their Carbon Footprint is HUGE! Its only after the 10th year when the offset starts to kick in - and then it starts all over again as the batteries need replacing! Who in their right mind would really consider an EV now - especially as it will only get worse, the Insurance Hike up will be next!

    40 grand is 40grand! It's not the cost of entry to car ownership or unavoidable, it's the cost of buying if you have unrealistic expectations of what you can afford and deserve. Far cheaper options exist.. Second hand, other fuels.... I suspect behind this for a lot of people is a sense of entitlement 🙄

    I totally agree the 40k expensive vehicle tax should now be at least 45k or 50k.
    I would like to buy a new EV but can't afford majority of them due to having to pay the extra £2k+ in taxes.
    Will have to settle for a car with few extras or buy Chinese.

    Well thought out video. ZE Mandate will collapse at some point - it's just about 'when'. This is no reflection on EV cars per se, some are excellent. It's about the woeful UK infrastructure generally, and the utilities companies and service providers focusing almost entirely on 'shareholder value' - as encouraged by successive governments. Unfortunately we were all asleep for the last thirty years whilst governments were deliberately underfunding the repair, maintenence and development of any sort of 'infrastructure'. We have 'Transport Ministers' who know less about transport than a passing squirrel, public who buy Chinese EV's without considering wether or not there will be jobs in the future for their kids - and you - who opt. for an EV for commercial reasons and because you like the 0-60 time. The battery material in your EV would have been sufficient to power 94 self-charging hybrids. Lithium is scarce you know ... ? Be clear, in the right circumstance, EV is the RIGHT CHOICE. Same as a petrol powered Cappuccino machine would be possible - but ridiculous. I'm glad that performance EV's will be taxed in the same way as performance ICE. Look up 'shedding' and road damage due to 2.4 ton vehicles ... Great presentation tho' 👍

    Why should ev drivers be exempt from paying,we all have to pay this tax with our normal ice vehicles. These heavy ev cars are much heavier and are probably causing more damage to our roads.

    Use the same road so pay for it. If you want to use a train you have to buy a ticket like everyone else so just pay your fair share.
    2 things in VED I find abhorrent.
    1) a 77 m.p.g. motorcycle that weighs a fraction of a car and uses only a few square feet of parking space is an obscene £111 a year yet a 60 m.p.g. car with a full parking space is £20.
    2) the Pay Per Mile idea some propose is a tax on working people. My daily commute is 55 miles then parking costs and PPM would be another cash burden on journeys done as a necessary evil; all of which comes out of nett pay yet self employed people can claim mileage, parking and depreciation for business use from the Inland Revenue while employees cannot. Another unfairness.

    Use your imagination if everyone had one of these EV milk floats there would be be traffic jams everywhere cars running out of charge on motorway and queues waiting to be charged. I think everything would be come to a standstill

      - Last time I filled up with petrol and paid it took 3 1/2 minutes.
      - Search results seem to suggest about 35 minutes for a fast charge (so 10x as long)
      - There are 8300 petrol stations in the UK.
      - Assuming 1/3 of the car fleet would be able to be charged on a private drive or at work
      - Allowing for EV to have 2/3 of the range of petrol car.
      Very roughly it seems like we'd need at least 80,000 charging stations (ten times as many charging stations as we currently have petrol stations)

      80,000 assumes that people would be willing to queue and that everyone charging in public stations would use fast-charging.
      Also by "stations" I don't mean "individual charging points", I mean 80,000 small car parks with 8 or more chargers. They'll occupy much more space than petrol stations because EV's can't simply drive through or queue in lines.
      I don't see how it can possibly be workable as a large scale solution. Government must know this?....

    Unless you have solar power charging at home and never use charging stations, then there is still an environmental price to pay via power stations!
    It was always going to come, road taxing EV's. Or there would have been a big hole in Gov. finances.
    If everyone could buy an EV and charge it at home, then drive it not paying any road tax....the Gov. would be borrowing £8.3 billion more to cover the lost revenue (OBR vehicle tax forecast for 2024/2025)!

      @@car_babble I didn't trust any of this EV stuff from day one. I know someone who spent £40,000+ on one from Peugeot and it broke down at a charge station and had to be crane lifted onto a lorry because it couldn't be rolled as doing so would damage the motor.
      She was without the car for 8 months and when she finally got it back from Peugeot, she only had it a week and the 'full charge' miles dropped to 60 miles. Peugeot told her it was a "feature" and that the vehicle monitors how much you drive per day and sets the battery accordingly. Rightly so, she was fuming and said that if she charges the battery to 100% she expects to get the 300+ miles the car's full charge was advertised as but Peugeot played dumb.
      In the end her and her husband got rid of it and replaced it with something from Citreon.

      I would argue that I pay more. My car is 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, costs 350 a month on PCP, has almost no maintenance costs and costs about 15 quid for the equivalent range of a tank of diesel.

      People who charge at home pay 5% VAT, and that is subsidised by people using electricity for cooking and heating... ICE drivers pay 65% tax+VAT on every litre...

    The extra weight on the road surface is a consideration.
    As for less environmental damage. EVs tend to be bigger cars so less then 3 liter BMW but not less then my 1 liter Dacia Jogger.

    It was something like 600 million they were losing out on in 2023. Now that sounds like a lot of money ... but total tax it was 0.07%
    They were projection 1billion in 2025 ... but thats still only 0.12 - 0.13%.
    I don't mind paying. The system has never been fair ... someone always pays more than someone else. But if the government really wants EV adoption by 2035 then they need to make it no more expensive than owning a Petrol car.
    If Public Chargers don't come down in cost no one without a driveway or work charger will be interested.
    With all the misinformation still being spread about EV's they really to work on debunking the fake news.

    EVs create more environmental damage during the constuction of the vehicle, extra weight damaging roads, extra brake particles polluting the air and due to the fact that the 'no damage to the envronment' claims mainly refers to the actual emissions at the point of use rather than the point of electricity generation where the power is still generated by fossil fuels in the main. So EV drivers may remain smug about how wonderful they are as caring human beings, but ths is largely delusional. The fact that depreciation of EVs is still huge compared to ICE cars has to be paid for somehow and that is likely to be at the cost of "pollution" by CO2 or other factors to pay for it. And now the stealth tax on expensive cars and the new road tax will see EV usage diminishing and the uptake of new EVS contnuing to decline. Tax slaves will not put up with it!

      If you bothered to check the facts you would know that over it's life cycle an EV will release approx 50% of the emissions of an equivalent ICE car regardless of whether the power stations are coal fired or not. Of course it will be even better if the power comes from wind, solar, hydro or Nuclear. Plus it's quieter, plus the local environment is massively less polluted giving us cleaner healthier cities and therefore contributes to huge savings for the health service.

      Extra brake particles - where's the evidence for this ? My understanding is that brake pads on an EV will last far far longer than an ICE car because they use regenerative braking. Or have I misunderstood your point ?

      @@alibro7512 that's theoretical. There haven't been electrical cars out for long enough to even cover that theoretical life cycle. I don't see electrical cars lasting their theoretical life cycle. Probably 50% off their life cycle. The battery replacement situation is also a huge problem currently. The rare earth minerals, I'm not sure we even have enough of them to mass manufacture these cars to replace ICE. Let alone for replacement of these batteries. Please don't fall for the recycling word either. No such thing as recycling. Just processing. It maybe saves 25% energy via recycling. The transportation costs aren't considered with those. edit: technology can improve. But currently, it's not there to discuss EVs. I even feel bad using disposable batteries in my remote. That's exactly the same with these cars. These cars don't last as long, aren't as reliable and cost more! Also regarding CO2 levels. The CO2 levels are now double what they were a few hundred years ago. That is correct. However, what doesn't get considered or mentioned is the deforestation and reduction in vegetation in the last 500 years. This vegetation converts CO2 to O2. This won't account for all of the CO2 increase, but is responsible for a considerable amount (maybe 40%) and yet is completely ignored. I remember this was a big topic growing up but these days no mention of it. Almost as if it has stopped but it hasn't.

      @@alibro7512 One might be "less bad" than the other when you tot up the energy cost of each but that argument is a red herring. It's sad that the proposed solution from government seems to be: "let's make the same billions of cars but slightly differently" rather than: "let's make public transport good enough that people don't want or need to cause catastrophic damage to the environment just to be able to get where they want to go"

      ​no-one man lol I missed this one with my reply. The biggest issue EV's have with brakes is corrosion and seizing due to lack of use. Brake pads will typically last 3 to 4 times longer in an EV.

    I used to buy (highly taxed), 20 B&H, a gallon of petrol, on my way to work, and a pint of beer in a pub (relax, have a laugh and find any upcoming work), on the way home. The conservatives wanted me to stop smoking, stop going to the pub, and stop using fossil fuel. Where did you think they would get our money from, 😂. We could have had, 24-7-365 days a year, independent, cheap, safe, clean, tidal and wave power electricity generation, all around our beautiful islands, powering our factories, cars and heating homes? Maybe we could have a national reserve fund, (like the Norwegians), with a 1p per kw tax on electric created from our seas?

    From "WHICH" : Electric cars first registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025: will (also) pay £190 per year from April 2025.
    The £40,000 expensive car supplement is not being backdated, so an electric car first registered in 2024, for example, will not have to pay the supplementary rate of £410 on top of the standard rate from April 2025.
    So unless your road tax becomes due before April, just SORN your car for a day or a few hours before April comes around, then put it back on the road, tax it for a year for £0. Job done.

      I drive a v12 with smoke belching, mostly oil I think.5 MPG around town and 10 out .
      I pay £60 road tax and £200 fully comp insurance
      I love driving around town so more people can see me.

    Shouldn't the emphasis be on forcing EV makers to reduce the cost of their cars? For example, EVs made in China should not be allowed to be sold in the UK at a higher price than they sell for in China, after allowing for shipping costs and sales taxes.

      The actual vehicle manufacture might be comparable but when you run the Corolla for years then the environmental impact is much higher. The hint is in the description "Internal Combustion". A Toyota is a collection of high speed controlled explosions and if it were invented today, it would be banned. Along with Cigarettes and Alcohol (which by they was, is classed as a poison, not a drug).

Of course the EV is better when running but not so good when you take into account the embodied energy cost, putting it into landfill and making another one after 10 years.

      @@tested211 Hmm there are plenty of Model S Teslas still going strong on their original Battery pack and motor having covered half a million miles - with no maintenance cost. I don't see many Corollas, even well driven and maintained ones, lasting for half a million miles. And even if it did, think of all the spark plugs, oil, filters, hoses, clutches, gearboxes, turbos, exhausts, brake disks, brake pads, serpentine belts, water pumps, air pressure sensors, compressors and whatever else would be replaced more than once over the 20 years. Add the labour costs to that figure too. The tired old trope that EVs are not built to last does not really stack up, especially as even the venerable Model S has only been around 10 or so years so far, and I don't see any making their way to landfill. If you are concerned with longevity then perhaps you might consider all the plastics under the hood that all cars, Toyotas included, have been acquiring. Nothing modern is built to last from Ford and Peugeot wet belt engines to the swarf found in Toyota power units. As long as it lasts the warranty - then it is someone else's problem.

    Yes, most EVs are expensive, aren't they? One thing you can be sure of, now that you own one and are a registered EV fan, you'll be hammered just as hard for tax, and for fun, maybe more, seeing as your battery is old tech, dangerous and very heavy, damaging the roads and forcing upgrades of safety barriers, producing a lot of tire particulate pollution etc. Sucks, huh? The real plan is to remove private cars entirely, and I was told that during a council job interview nearly 30 years ago.

    Ridiculous. Everyone should pay road tax but it should be completely reset for all old cars. My diesel BMW is £30 a year, my ID4 will be £190. Needs to be banded in £100 intervals, £100 for EVs, £1000 for big supercars etc.
