The "hall effect is a waste" argument is totally ridiculous. This is by far the best feature of this controller, but you present it as a negative because not enough people buy it??? That makes no sense at all.
I've only had this controller for a couple days now, but so far I like it. I bought it to use with the Steam Deck. #1 reason to buy was the Hall effect sticks. I'm just tired of these modern low quality controllers that all start drifting in less than a year. There aren't many options to get them yet - either this controller or a Switch controller. I'm not interested in a Switch controller even if it does work on PC, and apparently there are (or at least were) some fit-and-finish QC issues with their controllers. Many of the cons you listed I either don't care about or consider a plus. Platforms - I game only on PC. I concede that if you have one or more consoles, a multiplatform controller will serve you better. Build quality / materials - I mean, it's made of plastic. Like every other controller on the market. I actually find it laughable that people try to rate this. Like, is there some indestructible solid steel or aluminum controller out there I don't know about? I really like the bumpers and triggers. Nice and easy to reach and press. Short travel on the triggers is completely fine by me, preferable even. I treat them as buttons, analog triggers have always been a gimmick to me since they were introduced. I do have a few complaints however: - You are absolutely right that the Start/Select buttons are not good. As you said, sunken too far into the shell and hard to press. - The sticks are cramped just a little bit too close to the DPad and face buttons. Resting my thumbs on A/X will touch the right stick, possibly tilting it unintentionally. Same on the DPad side with Down/Right. - Possibly specific to the Steam Deck, but the controller does not function correctly when connected over Bluetooth. Menu button doesn't work, left stick all screwed up, and I don't think the right stick works at all. Connecting it via the dongle works perfectly however. So DON'T LOSE THAT THING! So by no means do I think this was a bad review. You're probably spot-on for at least 95% of people. But for some special cases, this thing is near perfect.
Ive had this controller for 3+ years now. Havent had any issues with it. Love the feel and weight. I like that everything is nice and close makes it easier for me to between buttons or do things that require dpad while also moving. I also finde the 60$ price to be perfect for the device but thats just my though
On SteelSeries official website Stratus+/Duo FAQ, "Both controllers feature our great Hall Effect triggers and ALPS joysticks for durability and precision.". The thumbstick is not hall effect.
I have this controller for 3+ years now. I think the build quality is good, as well as battery life. Needed to clean it once due to some buttons having issues not registering when pressed, seems to act new again after cleaning. Using this for pc and android phone. Overall, I'm really satisfied. Only complaint is the lack of rumble which is for me is a huge bummer.
I actually am looking to this controller because of those hall effect. I really have been struggling with drift with the thumb stick and triggers. So yeah affordable price with hall effect is a good thing here.
hey as someone who got this controller: its awesome. the size thing really doesnt seem like an issue at all to me, the joysticks are actually slightly further apart than dualshock 3, and they are also not shorter than them either. the buttons dont all make the most beautiful sound ever when you press them, but the triggers are satisfying to press in my opinion, and the dpad has worked great for me to play fighting games with. i honestly love this controller and my only complaint really is that the face buttons have engravings on them which is a little annoying and distracting to me, but its something that you can easily get used to, or wear thumb covers when gaming (which is what i have been doing) i bought mine off amazon refurbished for 25$ including tax & shipping and honestly its such a great value for money considering how good of a controller it is, the low latency, many connectivity options, and the high quality internals. it has the same plug & play compatibility as an xbox controller meaning that even really weird, old, or niche games that are running in my browser or that are standalone downloads work perfectly with this controller as well i went from using a dualshock 3 with a program called SCPtoolkit to using the stratus duo and it is so much better in every way. maybe its not the perfect controller for someone like the video creator who wants a stylish 1st party controller suited for someone with big hands, but for someone who just wants a solid controller that is affordable and is gonna last a long time i think its a great option.
Love this controller. Solid af for mobile gaming. I learned here i can't use it on xbox or switch tho, so that's disheartening... but thanks for the info I needed
spent 2 weeks researching before buying this one (among others) for PC, it’s an amazing purchase for 60$ with a dongle and connectivity offered. my 8bitdo is cancer and doesn’t work out of the box in steam or retroarch, unlike this one. I see no major cons after one year.
If you're using two sticks to control movement and view, this and the Sony controllers are the only ones with stick arrangements that make sense. The xbox arrangement of having the Dpad swapped with the left stick is nuts. Now your left hand is at a weird angle. How many xbox/PC controllers have sticks centered for your thumbs? Steelseries does.
I just tagged along and man, ye this talk seems legit, but is it? I dont own the Stratus nor any steelseries controller, but many other. There ARE Controllers not being recognized by Steam, and do need workarounds, which are annoying. Comparing a controller rocking hall effect at 45€/$ to Xbox controllers and PS5 Controllers is fine, but not really worth a comparison, since, if you already have an xbox or ps controller you most likely dont buy any other controller. But if you dont, you either go for the standard 65€/$ Xbox controller, which is fine, but also not rubberized or "special", has no hall effect and is even more expensive or look for something a bit cheaper, that offers a bit more, which this one does. Let's be honest here. The Xbox wireless is still the go to, but it lacks a built in battery(!!!) and back triggers. And it only comes with the 8 sided dpad nowadays....no hall effect or anything. What I dare say is: Yep, like with every(!) other tech gadget or peripheral, there are plenty of brands well known and well bought. This controller isnt by far the best, but with its offerings, its not the worst either. And compared to the price, it's actually quie good if you are a gamer like me, not playing on a controller every day, but having some games that are made for controllers and you dont want to spend your money on a (way too heavy) xbox elite 2.
I have this controller, and after 2+ years of excellent use, the R3 thumb stick button ceased to work. The stick STILL moves perfectly, but clicking it results with nothing. Since I have no idea how to fix it, I'm on a hunt for a new controller, and landed on this review. I MUST use it wirelessly, and with a wireless dongle (no bluetooth), so my choices are limited, and was kinda disapointed in the end where he said that "virutally any other controller is a valid alternative, just *plug it* into the tower and there you go" Well, I can't just "plug" and still be wireless, right? However, the Vader2 he mentioned seems like a good solution... too bad it isn't sold in my country, and the price seems very steep (60$ was kinda okay, but 85$ is a bit of an overkill) My hunt continues...
I bought this a couple years ago for the versatility of switching between devices. The only complaint I have is button ID doesn't always match what's registering on the computer or in the game software. Since there's not support software for the controller to straighten it out, then you have to create a legend based on what button the game thinks you're pressing. 😅
I bought this controller a few years ago and it's been great. I'd given up console gaming a few years before then and so using my no-longer-owned console controller wasn't an option. There, now you've heard of someone who's bought and enjoyed this controller and you can't use absence of evidence as evidence that it is a flop anymore.
I will add though that I hate the lights on the face of it, they are too bright and I had to cover them up with tape to keep from being annoyingly distracted by the bright blinking light in my face. They could have made this controller so much better with the ability to dim or disable those lights! If there is any point that would make me not chose to buy this controller, the annoying blinking light would be it.
Thanks for the review I use this controller all the time on my PC and Chromebook since it doesn't need Android 10 to work. Lot of cheaper Chromebooks do not come with android 10.
I own 2 of these controllers (bought em in 2021) and I LOVE THEM! They are terrific, handle well, fit my hands nicely but also very comfortable for my 9 year old daughter. Only thing I would change would be to color in the shape symbols on the buttons but apparently kids voted for the "black out look"...what's the point of that?
Weird to watch this and you dislike almost everything about it. I mean I have some issues with it like the center home button and when the controller joins as anything other than player 1 my left stick has insane amounts of drift and dead zoning, yet as player 1 it works perfectly.
I got two controllers for 30 bucks each. Also, in order to play two controllers you need to have one using the dongle and the other one should be wired. it gets very tricky when using more than one controller lol

There is a market for PC controllers? You probably believe that any controller works right outta the box because you might own a lot of XBOX controllers which work perfectly with pc Now if you was to plug in a PS4 controller to PC it doesn’t work with 100 percent of pc controller supported games, in that case you do have to use software to mimic or emulate that Xbox drivers on the ps4 controller So for someone like me who’s mainly been on ps4 and wants to finally get an Xbox driver controller to use while I play this is perfect because the analog layout is that of a PS4 and the controller can be used wirelessly without using something like DS4 to emulate a Xbox controller while playing with a real PS4 controller
Came back to say it’s still horrible. It’s a 50/50 chance of connecting, and if it doesn’t connect, I have to put it up and try again days later. It’s wild. I’m using the usb port to connect it, and it still almost never works.

There is a market for PC controllers? You probably believe that any controller works right outta the box because you might own a lot of XBOX controllers which work perfectly with pc
Now if you was to plug in a PS4 controller to PC it doesn’t work with 100 percent of pc controller supported games, in that case you do have to use software to mimic or emulate that Xbox drivers on the ps4 controller
So for someone like me who’s mainly been on ps4 and wants to finally get an Xbox driver controller to use while I play this is perfect because the analog layout is that of a PS4 and the controller can be used wirelessly without using something like
DS4 to emulate a Xbox controller while playing with a real PS4 controller
Got one for 24 on eBay... imagine paying $60 for what's essentially a generic controller
My joysticks quit after a month of play on my Stratus Duo
this is why you don't pay cash for electronics. Always use visa or MC.
Steelseries makes pretty decent corded headset. Shame this controller is sub par.
13:41 oof, xbox batteries....
2x for better experience
No bueno mine broke after 6 months electronics dieded inside
this guy isnt funny at all, not even close
I will say that this controller is probably the ugliest one I've ever seen, w review tho.
микро юсб ... позорище
£65 for this controller, thank you for that. better a ps5 controller at this point and is cheaper.
I hate the controller. It sucks.
Came back to say it’s still horrible. It’s a 50/50 chance of connecting, and if it doesn’t connect, I have to put it up and try again days later. It’s wild. I’m using the usb port to connect it, and it still almost never works.
You're wrong about PlayStation it's not plug and play with PC.
nobody needs it LOL
Just Subbed!
/Not a single game played in a controller review
