- I spend a week with the 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 AWD Limited to see what it's like to live with. With a quoted 270 miles of range, does it live up to that rating, and how's the rest of the daily experience? I answer all that and more in this video. What do you think about the IONIQ 6? Thanks to Hyundai for providing this vehicle to review.

My problem with the Tesla Model 3 and Y:
#1 no physical steering wheel adjuster lever
#2 no physical mirror adjustment switches
#3 no heated & VENTILATED seats
#4 no sunshade or powered moonroof option
I think the best EV are cars built using regular, intuitive car parts that just happens to be an EV.
Tesla is being cheap and forcing you to convince yourself to accept less.
Like others said EV's are very interesting but with a high price tag still for an AWD vehicle, I cannot pay $55,000 for one.Great video and review.
Thanks Kyle! Yeah we'll see how well these sell, maybe discounts will make them more appealing to people if they don't move (like we've already seen with EV6 GT and GV60).
The fit and finish of this vehicle will always be better then ANY Tesla made.
If I wanted an EV right now I'd buy a Hyundai.
Facts!
That's because you don't know what great ev is. Try Tesla over this overpriced crap.
While I'm not really a fan of the looks (the back), I like it better than the ionic5. This is one I'd consider. EVs still have that price premium, which is why I don't have one. But Hyundai is really making compelling choices.
Great review. i would get the base RWD model with 360 miles of range. The only thing I would miss would be the heated seats.
Thanks Isaac!
@isaacfalvey3139 Me too. The SE RWD long-range is the only trim I buy. I'm starting to see a lot of I6 in the UNC area.
It's amazing how Hyundai essentially got away with building a car that looks more like an "electric Porsche" than the Taycan.
Am I the only one that thinks it looks a lot like a modern interpretation of the Citroen DS from the 60s and 70s?
It's the same era of style called Streamliner.
Nice review on this car, it has a lot compelling options. According to Autoline, you can still get the big tax rebate on foreign EV's if you lease them rather than purchase.
Thanks! Yeah many car companies are offering a rebate sized discount to make them competitive with the stuff that does get the rebates, and EV6 Gas and GV60s that are sitting on lots are sometimes getting even more than $7,500 off.
Where i live (Redmond Wa) and this entire region... Teslas have literally become *the* NPC car. You cant throw a rock without hitting one, to say theyre boring and played out would be a massive understatement. Hell I just had a client who is 1 of their mobile service techs and asked him if he would ever buy one and he laughed, said yeah, no. As goofy as these cars look, id def pick a Hyundai over a Tesla anyday. Ive also personally worked on enough brand new and used Teslas to know to stay away from them, cool software, garbage QC / fit & finish.
I took a look at the ionic 6 in the NYIAS.
Way too small for me.
I've driven the Kia EV6 and the ionic 5. I found more space in the EV6 but it's still too cramped for my taste. I'm 6'6" tall.
My first EV will be the Cadillac Lyriq AWD Sport 3.
I don't need awd, the moonroof and large wheels. Long range and a heated steering wheel are a must.
The style alone makes this the winner over any Tesla. I would be happy with the two-wheel drive model for a more basic price. It truly is gorgeous.
WTF. .. This is an electric car yet there is so much road noise in it. Hard pass! Hey Hyundai spend an extra $100 on some sound deadning material in the wheel wells!
To me from the side it looks like CLA, old Maybach and the last generation accord. Would take this over Tesla because of the build quality.
I just leased one of these (Limited AWD w/ 20” wheels). Hyundai has a pretty good lease deal now where you basically get the 7500 knocked off the “selling price” in lieu of the tax rebate.
Overall it’s a HUGE upgrade from the Chevy Bolt I traded in ( I still have an ICE “fun car” and we still have my wife’s ICE minivan) although it’s also a huge price increase. I actually liked the Bolt a lot, but the slow charge times and the uncomfortable ride (especially for passengers) were two big problems.
Overall it’s a REALLY good car so far. Nice interior and it’s just… I can’t describe it easily, but it’s easy and relaxing to drive without feeling floaty. The reviews really say it all, the suspension is a great balance of comfort and sport. It’s quite efficient (I’ve been babying it and getting like 3.8mi/kWH but with the AC going constantly… that’s really quite good) but when you throw it in sport mode it’s fast.
The interior isn’t luxury car level standards, but it’s definitely one of the better midrange interiors I’ve seen. Its exterior looks great in person, very unique, have had several stares while driving. The tech features are good, and there are a ton of safety features too.
The super fast level 3 charging is the cake topper tho… between it and the 300ish mile range those make it a real viable road trip car.
Yeah, it’s pricey, but if you can swing it, it’s DEFINITELY worth a test drive. I haven’t had it that long so I’m biased by “new car” rose colored glasses, but so far I would have ZERO problems recommending it to anyone. It is really just generally that good.
Thanks for sharing your ownership experience so far and I'm glad you're enjoying yours!
Thanks for a great review … for many it’ll will definitely be worth the extra $6k to get it instead of Model 3. Nothing against the Tesla but some folks want gauges, Apple CarPlay and to be different.
There's a big hidden cost on the Model 3 that no one talks about as well: insurance. For many it can double or triple your premium. They have high crash rates, and Tesla makes them very hard to repair.
Totally agree, thanks Ted!
We bought a Mach-E instead of a Model Y because we wanted a gauge cluster, CarPlay, a 360 camera, rear cross-traffic alerts, and satellite radio so paying a price premium to get what was most important to us was fine with me. I can see why other people would do the same for something like this.
I used to be an early EV adopter then figuring out they are not the worlds savior everyone wants. Now i see them as driving appliances having nothing redeeming added to the resale crashing making them driving electronic devices. ALL that said this thing actually has my eye. I really like the way it looks. It looks unique in a good way some say Porsche and i say Saab Turbo but who cares it looks great. So its electric to me i don't care but well done Hyundai. Still a pricy puss!
For what it's worth on efficiency, I've averaged 4.0 m/kWh over the past year (13,000 miles) with my Kia Niro EV. That's in East Tennessee, and mostly rural roads in the 50 mph range. I see more like 4.3 m/kWh in the summer and 3.7 in the winter. I'm looking to upgrade to the Ioniq 6.
Shape reminds me a little of the 1960 Citroen. Nice car the Ioniq 6. As far as speed is concerned, at the opposite extreme there was car many years ago called the Ambassador....not the one by American Motors, but a totally different one from Hindustan Motors that looked like an old Rover from Britain; I think the car from Hindustan motors went from zero to 60 mph in 45 seconds.
Black looks nice on this one. But if you hate that Streamliner style like old Porsches, then it won't matter.
The "extra space" in a crossover is pure imaginary. Its completely useless space unless you dont need a back seat and want to keep them folded flat all the time. When actually using the rear seats for passengers sedans almost always have more useable cargo space then those little soccer mom mobiles.
The extra space in SUVs comes from the ability to stack due to their boxier shape and the wider hatch opening, which are very real and tangible benefits for many. I'm surprised I have to explain this lol.
Some old Porsche action goin on in the back lol
I say Saab Turbo but yea.
Saw one drive by the other day. Styling is interesting but I'd rather have the 5.
I live in the Pittsburgh region and had a Genesis GV60 (similar drivetrain and battery) and winter range was atrocious. Absolutely horrible cold weather range and let’s not talk about Electricity America
Well….what was the range?
Maybe 120 miles
Wow! That’s quite a difference. Thanks for the response.
@@wackit6756 it was really bad. The car did fine when it was warm. Cold just killed it
That's bizarre that it was that bad for you. Our small battery Mach-E with no heat pump was doing 120 miles in the winter when it's normally rated at 224 miles.
With a roofline like that, why isn't it a sportback?
The front and side profiles are really nice. That rear though…I just can’t get myself to like it.
That car is strange but it looks sharp. Interesting to hear about the interior space. I hope sedans sick around. I think they will have their day one again.
That backseat space is unreal. I said it in the original video but I'm definitely getting Infiniti J30t vibes from the rear. Really liking these bolder designs from Hyundai.
nice,,, its not small,,, sat in one couple weeks back,, its long,, makes model 3 look like a toy
This is a great vehicle. I still kinda regret not waiting for it, but to be honest I would have wanted the 5/6 N which means at least another year or two. And my main focus was to get out of my current gas car this year, so that wouldn't have worked.
Model 3 wins in my book anyday of this car. You can get performance version model 3 that is way cheaper and will distroy this car in almost every way. .sorry huynday you need to do better. Like about $15k cheaper in this exact version. To be even considered. In my book.
This thing looks like it’s going forwards and backwards at the same time.
Great video! These are growing on me once you get over the “catfish” looks
Thanks!
Great review! Saw one on the road yesterday and not a fan of the rear end.
Beautiful car
I think car would looks better if it was a 2-door. elongated look of 4-door makes it ugly
8:44 I DO NOT WANT... a Tesla. Jesus why would I want to be confused with most cars on the road now. Good for you guys your helping clean up the atmos! great job. I for one think the cars are hiddious and will not.
Hiddious is strong but the fact they are so damn common makes me angry seeing them. Id like more variation. Not loads of white, and silver Teslas roaming around.
I would like to know what its like at 32 degrees our for a couple months
Charge port overheats on their electric cars, research before you buy.
Love the double stacked Porsche speedtail look! Great job with the plagiarism 😂😂😂
Looks more Saab Turbo than Porsche.
Porsche can’t claim that forever; move out Hyundai is on the way.
I've had my SE Ioniq 6 AWD for about 3 weeks and taken it on several 200 mile highway trips. I consistently get 4-4.2M/KWH, so my range is also exceeding the projections. I'm actually enjoying the car even more than i thought I would. My only two complaints are (1) the lack of option packages means I couldn't buy some of the upgrades I wanted, like leather seats, and get the max range I desired and (2) lack of cup holders. Sounds pathetic, but there are only two cup holders in the front and two in the back. The spaces on the doors will not take a cup or even a water bottle. A little, thing, but it's annoying on longer trips and an easy area for improvement on the next version.
Really like this offering, from a functional standpoint and looks as well! Only thing striking me as odd on the review is comparing it to an Audi A3/S3. The Ionic 6 is huge compared to that! Even the shots of you driving it you can tell it's a huge car, which makes sense on why it seemed so roomy inside. Just Hyundai playing with proportions to trick you into thinking it's smaller...
There is so much legroom in many of the new EV sedans that I'd rather give up two or three inches of legroom for a slightly higher bench and/or more headroom. Doesn't matter how much space you have if it feels like your knees are near chin-height.
Also, I think it was an odd decision not to offer the more efficient wheel/tire package with dual motor until the 2024 model year, and now it's SE only for it. A 46mi range difference is quite significant, it would be nice to see as a no-cost option.
I love the car, and I own a First Edition model since March.
We have good HPC coverage here in Germany, so loosing some range for AWD, full spec and 20" does not hurt me.
Audi TT meets Porsche design language
I like your videos, but this is not Audi S3-sized. It's an entire foot longer. It's bigger than an S4.
Right, but it’s priced like S3 and has similar power. But I’d say this is even more space than S4, and probably a bigger backseat than even S6 honestly.
Great review Matt.
Thanks!
What’s up this is ev fan here
Matt,
Do you believe Hyundai/Kia redeemed themselves with the whole drivetrain issues? Are their electric cars the answer to their issue?
I know some people have engine issues with Hyundai/Kia but I still question how widespread it is. If it was truly as common as some make it seem, their long warranty coverage would bleed them dry. But I think EVs can definitely help to level the reliability playing field for any company as long as their electronics are top notch, and while these Hyundais and Kias seem pretty reliable so far, they have had a couple recalls too (as have all their other competitors). Time will tell I guess.
Why did you use the Model 3 Performance for a price comparison ? Isn't the base Model 3 rated at @ the same range? With the tax credit on the Model 3 that means a difference of @ $25,000 ($32,000 to $57,000) for the IONIQ 6. Even the long range at $47,000 less $7500 credit is $17,000 less.
I was comparing it to the AWD Long Range version that when built with similar options is $51k hence my $6k price comparison, and then I mentioned the tax credit. The tax credit doesn't work for everyone though, so that's why I break them out and don't assume that everyone gets that savings.
I'm not in the market for an EV and the styling of the Ioniq6 is a bit egads-y; HOWEVER, I am glad there's finally a Model3 challenger! I love to look at other cars on the road, but the space is filled with Tesla after Tesla after Tesla and they're soooo freaking boring. We need more EV Texture to balance out that eggy madness and I think Hyundai's offerings fit the bill. Thanks for posting!
Well said! Thanks for watching!
Funny how sometimes we focus on one thing based on our experiences, and for me here it was the turn signal sound... I can't hear it AT ALL in my Mach-E and it bugs me so much, but this one sure is loud and proud 😆
Yeah it's odd how quiet it is in the Mach-E lol.
“Limits power when the wheels turn” seems like a really dumb thing for a car to do
I generally prefer sedans to crossovers, but due to the sedan look I feel like this car will depreciate a lot more compared to the ioniq 5 or ev6. I guess time will tell
All EVs depreciate like they've been driven off a cliff. If that's your primary concern, consider buying something with a manual transmission instead.
@@MattNukem While I agree, I think depreciation should still play a factor when comparing between 2 EVs.
For example, the 2021 Polestar 2 AWD and XC40 Recharge started for around 50k MSRP. But the PS2 sells used for 35-40k vs. the XC40 which is around 40-45k. That's a big difference in true cost of ownership over 2 years. These are different brands technically so maybe not apples to apples, but it was the closest thing I could find
S-class levels of interior space?
More like C -class!!!
I was talking about rear seat legroom.
The range and charging is what gets me. We are no where near ready for Evs yet. Turn the ac on and automatically lose range. It’s called out/ battery depletes immediately
I had the A/C on for most of my driving in this and it still over-performed it's rated range, so no, didn't lose range due to A/C.
I know some people love how these look but seeing them on the roads it’s just so bad. The proportions are just so bad
Hopefully when kia sells their version it isnt so dang ugly
And the fact that Hyundai is a car company that makes tech and Tesla is a tech company that makes cars is a huge difference imo. I think this will last longer than a Tesla.
